How does a newly deployed virtual machine present itself?
HI Folks, I'm not clear on what services the cloud platform brings to bear and what configuration of my virtual machines I have to do to both accommodate cloudstack or compensate for cloudstack. If I deploy, say, a Fedora image to my cloudstack cloud absent any specific configuration, will I be able to use its desktop through, say, a browser? Obviously, if the Fedora image is properly configured, I could use VNC or RDP, but does this mean I need to deploy a properly pre-configured image, or does cloudstack have a mechanism where this configuration is asserted during spin up or installation in the absence of any overriding configuration? These also mean I have to have the native clients on my local machine, and the world is moving toward the universal client, the web browser, so is there a browser-based way to interact with my virtual machines' desktops? And that leaves the final question. Do I configure an image and deploy it knowing that it will live in a cloud absent display hardware, or can I do an install to my cloud and expect that the resulting image will have some method of connection over and above ssh, like some form of remote desktop provided as a service of the cloud platform? Thanks for the help, Chris.

Hi Chris, You shouldn't need to do anything at the VM level. Cloudstack will provide VNC access via Cloudstack http://fresnostate.edu/csm/csc/user-guides/connect.html Shows a good example. Re: Cloudstack 4.2.1 / Xenserver 6.1 GRE tunnelling / createTunnelNetwork failed
Hi Tuna, Thanks for your feedback. I’ve just built the RPMs from source (apache-cloudstack-4.2.1-src.tar.bz2), unfortunately I still get the same error: 2014-01-16 23:52:01,442 WARN [xen.resource.CitrixResourceBase] (DirectAgent-13:null) createTunnelNetwork failed Should your updated GRE modules have come down with the source files or do I have to do a full git pull to get this? As per various posts, documents and wiki articles I’ve got: - Xenserver 6.1 cluster with all patches, CloudStack 4.2.1 installed from RPMs (CentOS 6.5). - Advanced zone configuration (no security groups). - Public and management networks configured with VLAN isolation (bonds). - sdn.ovs.controller set to “true, sdn.ovs.controller.default.label set to network label of the guest network. - Guest network traffic configured for GRE, IP interfaces configured on the guest network and “VLAN range” configured. The problem is tunnels won’t come up, tagged networks are created but no GRE tunnels are created between XS hosts. Whilst the SSVM and CP come online the domain router and the first VM fail to start. Checking the management server logs the root cause seems to point to a “createTunnelNetwork failed” error. Doing a bit more digging I found the following bug logged back in September: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-4599 1) Considering the bug above was logged for CS4.1 - is GRE under active development as per 4.2.1/4.3? Is it considered to be a working component of CloudStack? 2) Has anyone managed to get GRE tunnelling working - if so are there any patches / workarounds / specific component versions required? Windows 2008 and virtio network
Hi, I just noticed that Windows guests, even with 2012 profile will be provisioned with e1000 network driver opposed to virtio interface type='bridge' mac address='x'/ source bridge='brbond0-1000'/ target dev='vnet5'/ model type='e1000'/ bandwidth inbound average='44800' peak='44800'/ outbound average='44800' peak='44800'/ /bandwidth alias name='net0'/ address type='pci' domain='0x' bus='0x00' slot='0x03' function='0x0'/ /interface Is it in some way possible to prevent and use virtio for all windows 2008 and higher guests ? Thanks, Bjoern
Re: Windows 2008 and virtio network
Hi, try the Windows PV OS Type. However, this probably also enables the virtio disk controller for the root disk, which would cause the VM to not boot if the driver is not installed. Re: Urgent: Revert disk from expunging state
Yeah, if the state is Expunging and removed is some date (and not NULL) the virtual disk file is probably gone. The relevant table is volumes.
