You usually have to install an additional language pack. How to do this
depends on your Operating System. Have a look at the following link for
some instructions and useful information:

Once the language has been installed in LibreOffice go to Tools

[libreoffice-users] MySQL Extension branded ORACLE

2011-03-09 Thread Randy Millner

Some of us enjoy the native mysql support available from OpenOFFICE. I
believe we obtained the extension directly from the OPEN OFFICE site. I
have not been successful locating it at the LibreOffice site.

It was a delight to not have to use the odbc and/or java drivers just to
access mysql data via OOBase.

I look forward to when my favorite first class distribution offers the
mysql-extension in it's repositories.

Other distros have this extension available for LibreOfficeBase now.

This missing package will have an adverse effect on several projects.

I downloaded the extension for openoffice located at the link below.

It installs and works, but it is BRANDED ORACLE.

http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/en/download/4670

how long it will work is anyone's guess?

[libreoffice-users] Field of increasing ordinal numbers?

It does not seem like the field options include a way to add FIRST,

ordinal number options. Is that correct? Is there a way with LO to do

Here is the bug. When I wanted to bold some words in the text, I could
not highlight/select the text so I could bold it. I could do the

still worked, but I could not get the first word in the line/paragraph

Please try this: In Tools Options LibreOffice Writer Formatting

I wonder how many good press articles about LibreOffice

the better for getting the word out about LibreOffice.

Actually, modify that. How many print media

Maybe I should look at LibreOffice list and do some more

I don't know how to do either of those, however there are two ways you
can change what appears in the window. one is to manipulate the
selector at the bottom (to something other than Automatic) and the
other is to switch to a different view (page or anything other than

Fortunately this is not an issue of wait-and-hope-while-my work-stagnates

Since this product is out of development it is imperative that users have a
place to ask for support, have potential bugs confirmed, make comments for
about interface issues and to generally offer suggestions to enhance the
product.

Also, since this is a new product, the expert userbase is not around to
take up the slack, so it is also important that there is some official
representation for the time being to carry the load.

Thank you,

No, anyway not without hacking either somewhere in the code or maybe in
the xml files of the document.

However, one little trick: if you change or add a (special) page style
to your document (template) with paragraphs with the desired styles in
the header, those styles will be shown in the listbox 'Apply Style'
(left at the toolbar).

In my opinion . . . .
For the longest time, even though there was a 64-bit version of Windows,
computer venders would not install the 64-bit version on their 64-bit
products due to driver issues. The current question is - does the
32-bit package work on the 64-bit OS and how much faster would it be
using a 64-bit version?

I know that with Ubuntu 64-bit, many 32-bit packages will not run, so we
need 64-bit packages. I hate it when I want to use packages like
Lightscribe, but they only have a 32-bit DEB install. So to extend that
reasoning, I would hate to not have a 64-bit package on Windows 64-bit,
if the 32-bit version did not work. I assume it does at this point.

Next, how many users of Windows currently have the 64-bit version? Most
users of Vista I know of do not have the 64-bit version. My Dell is
64-bit processor but they did not offer the Vista 64-bit version for the
laptop. Win 7? How many users have Win 7's 64-bit version? More than
Vista I assume. XP? No 64-bit version for that either as far as I
could find when I bought that laptop. And yes, a lot of people still
use XP SP2 or SP3.

So now what is needed to take the source code and convert and compile it
to a 64-bit version. I do not think it is a easy as just taking the
32-bit Windows source code and compiling it on a 64-bit Windows
computer. I could be wrong, but it is a good guess. It tends never to
be that simple. Even if it was, you would have a 32-bit version
compiled as a 64-bit version and not coded to take advantage of the full
64-bit architecture.

That is the real issue for wanting a 64-bit version of the package,
right? Having a package rewritten to taking advantage of the 64-bit's
assets to make the package run faster.

Then we need to ask again, how many of the Windows users need a 64-bit
version when the 32-bit version works fine? 5%, 10%, 30%??? Since
LibreOffice has been officially out with 3.3.0/3.3.1 for less than two
months, you may need to give the developers time to deal with what is
currently on their schedules before they have a chance to develop the
Windows 64-bit version. If there comes a time when they get enough
interest in it by volunteers willing to take on the Win 64-bit version
project, then you should see one come out quickly enough.

Another question. Can the 64-bit XP [if there is one], 64-bit Vista,
and the 64-bit Win 7 use the same 64-bit package? Of would you need to
make one for XP, another one for Vista, and a third for Win 7. I know
there are major driver issues between the versions, so it could indicate
that you may need different version of 64-bit Windows packages, one for
each version. That could be a problem, who decided which 64-bit version
to do and which to not do at this point.

I have a friend that never upgraded to MacOSX since it did not work
well enough for her needs and kept crashing on her. I do not think
she will ever get a version of LibreOffice for her Mac. Not enough
people still using it to make the effort worth the developer's time and
remainder of their head of hair. So if there is not enough users
needing a 64-bit Windows version of LibreOffice, then those people who
want it, may have a longer wait for that version.

This is all opinion. What actually decides what platforms are being
developed for is not something in my bailiwick. But my opinion and view
is from the 20+ years as a mainframe and early PC programmer. I do not
program any more, since my first stroke in the early 1990's, so I do not
know what the current developers use for deciding what is being done and
when.

That's it. just a simple quesion.

In my opinion . . . .
For the longest time, even though there was a 64-bit version of
Windows, computer venders would not install the 64-bit version on
their 64-bit products due to driver issues.

Next, how many users of Windows currently have the 64-bit version?
Most users of Vista I know of do not have the 64-bit version. My Dell
is 64-bit processor but they did not offer the Vista 64-bit version
for the laptop. Win 7? How many users have Win 7's 64-bit version?
More than Vista I assume. XP? No 64-bit version for that either as far
as I could find when I bought that laptop. And yes, a lot of people
still use XP SP2 or SP3.

There was a 64-bit XP, but I heard it's fairly buggy and it is
relatively useless because it lacks drivers. From what I can see, the
transition occurred during Vista's reign. Case in point, we bought 7
basic laptop computers with Vista ; the first three ones came with a
32-bit system and the latter four with a 64-bit system. Maybe all
companies didn't transition at the same time, but I would say the shift
occurred about 3-4 years ago. As for Windows 7, I think the only reason
to get a 32-bit system is if one upgrades a 32-bit Vista computer.

That is the real issue for wanting a 64-bit version of the package,
right? Having a package rewritten to taking advantage of the 64-bit's
assets to make the package run faster.

Then we need to ask again, how many of the Windows users need a 64-bit
version when the 32-bit version works fine? 5%, 10%, 30%??? ...

That's the real question. I'm not an expert, but I'm not a total newbie
either. From what I read, the 64-bit architecture offers a few advantages:
1. possibility to open a partition larger than 4 Gb (in the case of
Excel, it translates in files larger than 2 Gb);

2. faster processing in crunching-intensive applications;
3. maybe higher limits in number size and a few details like that.

For point 1, my largest Excel or Calc file is a whopper 20 Mb, and
considering the time it takes to open or save, I would NOT recommend
using Calc for a 1 Gb file, even less for a 2 or 3 Gb one. As for point
2, the speed of Office-type applications is limited by the speed of
keyboard entry or display operations rather than by number-crunching
speed. Unless one has huge macro functions, the speed gain in Writer or
Calc would be minimal.

Another question. Can the 64-bit XP [if there is one], 64-bit Vista,
and the 64-bit Win 7 use the same 64-bit package? Of would you need to
make one for XP, another one for Vista, and a third for Win 7. ...

There probably are minor issues to consider, but a well-designed 64-bit
version would work on all 64-bit systems (and definitely on Vista and
Windows 7), just like the well-designed 32-bit version works on XP,
Vista and 7.
