2012-01-31 Thread Konstantinos Tzoannopoulos
What the subject says - I need to change the orientation of only ONE page
in Writer, but for some reason it only lets me do it for ALL the pages.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

This is done using Page styles. The Writer Guide on page 119
describes how to do what you want to do. You can download it at:
http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/documentation/. Or you could
download chapter 4 which discusses what you can do with pages. I
recommend downloading the entire Writer Guide so you will have a
reference for future questions.

I tried in 3.4.5 and it works there fine too. Ctrl-V creates a nice
Impress-table with the content that I copy from Calc.

But... we don't want to convert the copied cells into an Impress Table
when pasting them, we want them to be an embedded 'spreadsheet', that
when double-clicked, allows you to edit it as if it was a spreadsheet.
This is how it used to work a long time ago - and how Microsoft Office
works by default.

I don't know which version/update changed this...

I'll have to find an example spreadsheet/Presentation that causes this
problem and file a bug and upload them to it...

Thanks for checking Cor...

I prefer the WIKI page, since it shows the date of last modification.
It also shows which documents are for the 3.3.x line and the 3.4.x
line. 3.4.x line documentation is currently being worked on, though.

I will have to work on downloading the documentation again to get the

Re: [libreoffice-users] How do I change page orientation for only ONE page in Writer?

2012-01-31 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Both pages are about the same for the 3.3.x branch.

The wiki-page does have the more recent 3.4.x branch documentation and a couple
of chapters about Base but it only has individual chapters, not a complete book
anywhere.  One of the chapters for Base is a rough work-in-progress rather than
completely finished.

For the Dvd it might be best to stick with the 3.3.x branch for now.  I guess
if you do have chapters separately then maybe it might be worth having those
separate ones as the newer versions but that would make them unlike the copies
you have in the completed books.  So it might just confuse people.

Just my 2cents and contradiction.

Tom :)

software manuals were authored. Styles were used extensively. Now it's
time to modernize the look of the manuals, but we don't want to repeat
the style changes in all manuals. (That's what styles are for, aren't
they?)

With MS Word (2000), the .doc files recorded the template. Styles can be
marked so that when they were changed while editing one of the .doc
files, that style changes were propagated to the template. Later, when
one of the other .doc files was opened, it copied all styles from the
template (automatically), which effectivly updates the other file as well.

What is the workflow with LibreOffice to propagate style changes between
.doc files created from the same template? I looked at the documentation
and help pages around the template manager, but found only means to copy
styles manually. Is there something that works more automated?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Worldlabel templates and license

2012-01-31 Thread Don C. Myers

Hi,

I have used these table style templates for 4 to 5 years. They are the
only templates I use. They are extremely easy to adjust, the text is
automatically centered in each label, adjusting the top margin for the
page adjusts for printer variation, and the labels never have the text
run like on the Microsoft style labels, where I've had label text
shift enough by the time that you get 3/4 of the way to the bottom of
the page some of the text is on the label above it, even though
everything was fine at the top of the page.

HI Dennis and Tom
Hope you doing great!
I read a thread about our
http://www.worldlabel.com/Pages/openoffice-template.htm and licensing.

These templates are Public Domain.
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/publicdomain/
The GPL is confusing because it is the license for the application delivering
the templates.

Just curious what is remarkable about them being made in 2005?
Please feel free to use them anywhere to help promote Libreoffice.
We are working on a new website and Libreoffice will have a nice logo on it at
sometime.

[libreoffice-users] How get LibreO-Base working?

2012-01-31 Thread Pertti Rönnberg

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen out there.
I am confused -- can you help me? I recently installed
LibreOffice-v3.4.5 after beeing a happy OO-user in many many years. I
now need to make a couple of relational databases (subforms -reports)
and decided to try LibreO's Base. On my main-PC (AMD Athlon II X3 445,
Win7Prof/32bit) the LO's Base caused the program to stop (WriteCalc
work OK). I uninstalled LO, removed folders via WinExplorer, rebooted,
installed LOv3.4.5 again and when asked for a new JRE I tried to
understand the instructions found and first installed JRE8
(jre-8-ea-bin-b21-windows-i586-13_jan_2012.exe) and then JRE7
(jre-7u2-windows-i586.exe) and loaded both as instructed into LO
(LO-page: tools/options/LibreOffice/java). Now LO didn't stop but
neither of the JREs seem to be sufficient /LibreO requires a JRE to
perform this task. The selected JRE is defective. Please select and
install a new JRE/ and then /connection to datasource (db-name)
could not be established -- no Java installation could be found; check
installation/. I did my best several times.
Note. After doing exactly same install process on my laptop
(Win7Prem/64bit) the LO(64bit), Base included, works fine.
Did I do something wrong, wrong versions, is it the 32bit make of LO or
the LO-Base itself, is the JRE(32bit) wrong, -- or what? I like the
graphical interface but I don't want to go back to OO and I don't want
to buy a MSAccess, and for my simple needs a MySQL/PHP/Apache seems too
heavy to learn.

Thanks in advance.

Even on 64bit Windows OSes, you must use a 32bit Java JRE or JDK, a
64bit version won't work. You may well have installed 64bit versions of
the JRE by mistake, but there was also a problem with recognition of JRE
1.7 by LibreOffice, and this was supposed to be fixed - perhaps it isn't
yet in LO 3.4.5. I didn't even know JRE 1.8 was out, so that will
probably not work either. If you can, try and find a 32bit JRE 1.6 to
download and use instead, that should work.

Well, then you will never be able to use Base neither. Base is extremely
simple. If you can not work with simplified database tools, Base can't
help you by any means.

The main purpos of Base is connecting office documents to databases so
you can feed your calculation models, serial letters and bibliographies
with database data. This is straight forward and simple enough.
But Base does not help you to plan a relational database nor does it
help very much creating one. Most of the wizards and graphical design
tools are buggy or incomplete at least.

Page orientation is a property of page styles - so if all your pages
have the same page style they will all have the same orientation. If
you change it, the change will apply to all pages.

Perhaps all your pages have the Default (portrait) page style. There
is a built-in Landscape page style which has the other orientation
and may suit your purpose.

o Put the cursor at the end of the last portrait page.

I've no problem opening most lwp files in 3.3.3, 3.4.5, 3.5RC2 (linux).
However when I examine the files in a hex editor I see that they are

Page orientation is a property of page styles - so if all your pages
have the same page style they will all have the same orientation. If
you change it, the change will apply to all pages.

Perhaps all your pages have the Default (portrait) page style. There
is a built-in Landscape page style which has the other orientation and
may suit your purpose.

o Put the cursor at the end of the last portrait page.
o Go to Insert | Manual Break... .
o Under Type, select Page break.
o Under Style, select Landscape from the drop-down list.
o Now put the cursor at the end of the single landscape page.
o Go to Insert | Manual Break... .

Each page break is associated with a change in page style: from
Default to Landscape and back again. If these built-in page styles do

Have you tried with LibreOffice 3.5RC2 ? There were known issues on some

OSes with previous 3.4.x versions.

Have you with the stock 3.5RC2? No, I'm not being factitious or
disrespectful... but you keep claiming that this all works with your own
build from Master I'd appreciate an answer.

It's a problem that I doubt will be solved anytime soon.

Your best bet is to simply use a Calc spreadsheet, open that with the
MailMerge Wizard, and go from there. With that you neither need Base or
Java.

Yes, the dependency on Java JRE/JDK is a pain in the backside, but
unfortunately unavoidable if you want to use Base, at least for the time

With no Java being installed, I can connect a Base document to any
non-Java database, write queries, draw input forms and use Calc as
reporting engine.

And I would state that that is an unusual user setup. The user here
wants a relational database with subforms and reports and does not want
to use mysql, so where does that leave him her with regard to Base -
IMO, with HSQLDB, the stock db engine provided with LO. For that, you
need a JRE/JDK.

And Calc for reports is OK, much as is Writer, but for anything a bit
more than a simple report, the user will have to deal with not only the
idiosyncrasies of the respective tool used for creating the report,
plus, in general, learn to use macros. The whole benefit of having a
specific reporting tool (the Java based ORB extension) is that this is
suppose to ease that pain.

Personally, I'd love to be able to say, you get a great and easy to use
db reporting engine without Java in LO, but that is simply not the case
at the moment.

Re: [libreoffice-users] table - automatically copy text

2012-01-31 Thread Steve Edmonds

Hi.
If I understand you correctly, you can create fields and then have them
displayed in other locations. I.e. entered in one place and displayed in
many.

Any help would be appreciated.

It even works for me with :
LibreOffice 3.4.5
OOO340m1 (Build:502)

Provided by Ubuntu from the Oneiric repositories.

I clicked on Other external data source, then Parameters, and chose
Spreadsheet. It appears to work fine, as in I can thereafter press F4,
select a tuple from the table, copy it into a Writer document, the merge
data wizard starts up, and I can choose how I want the data merged.
