Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Correct Syntax to address a table or form field in Base's Basic

2012-07-18 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
There are some guides and partial bits of guides at
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications#LibreOffice_Base_Guide
(scroll down a bit to see some of the 3rd party things).  Mostly it seems that
Andrew Pitonyak's guide is the best.

Also the FAQ mentioned in the link is complete for Base but i'm not sure it
will help all that much.  Usually Andreas is one of the best answerers here but
it seems like he was having a bad hair day as we all do from time-to-time.
Sorry about that!

Good luck and happy hunting! :(
Regards from
Tom :)

A database will also do what you want to do. Queries will provide
you with the information you need. I use such a database. One query
tells me the balance of all my financial accounts (9 of them). Two
queries break down my expenses into budget categories; one is for the
present month, and the second is for the previous month. This way I can
compare expenses for the two month by category. Both queries have a
column for the budgeted amounts for each category as well.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: [3.5.3.2/Calc] Display drop-down list in all cells in column?

2012-07-18 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
One problem with using a spreadsheet or database is that it is difficult to
set-up an audit trail and even if you do then it's unlikely to be trusted by
anyone else that might need to see your accounts.  That is the advantage with
using proper software developed for the purpose or for using penink (ie so you
can't rub-out entries without it being noticeable) to keep proper records.

If you don't have an accountant or auditor or present the accounts to anyone
else then of course a database might be a LOT better than a spreadsheet, if you
are at all familiar with database programs.

And why isn't the bank statements in PDF files the audit trail?
The numbers in those files can be compared with the numbers in the
tables. The query structure will show whether the query will give the
correct results or not. If the input numbers are correct, and the
operations performed on those numbers are correct; it seems logical to
assume that the output would also be correct. When in doubt, the query
structure can also be checked by feeding it data with known
calculations. If the query output on this data matches the known
calculations, I would think the query can be trusted to give the correct
result on other data as long as that data can be verified first.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Libreoffice GNOME 3 Compatibility

2012-07-18 Thread webmaster-Kracked_P_P

There was a thread about problems with the desktop environment and LO
with the darker desktop themes, I think.

---

My question is why are you using GNOME 3 shell for 12.04? From my
readings of articles about the current GNOME 3 shell, it is still not
fully functional, or at least the last article[s] seem to state.

I have no problem with LO using 12.04 and MATE for the desktop
substitution instead of GNOME 3 shell. I wanted my desktop to look as
much like the GNOME desktop that 10.04 has, so I went with MATE and it
works great.

That is why I went with MATE for Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop that was
updated from 10.04 to 12.04 and the added MATE to get it working like I
needed.

I run LO 3.5.4 on all my Ubuntu and Windows systems at this point.

Oh wow!!  I am more familiar with Access than Base and hadn't even considered

[libreoffice-users] SQL statement in Base query

2012-07-18 Thread Dan
The FROM clause is where I am having errors returned. The outline
that I am using for this clause is:

FROM Table name [{CROSS | INNER | LEFT OUTER | RIGHT OUTER} JOIN
Table name ON Expression] [, ...]

I have two tables with a child parent relationship:

Persons.P_ID = Orders.P_ID

These queries run without errors: (INNER JOIN has no fields with a NULL
value; LEFT OUTER JOIN has NULL values in the OrderNo field; RIGHT OUTER
JOIN has NULL values for the two fields in the Persons fields.)

SELECT Persons.Last, Persons.First, Orders.OrderNo
FROM Persons INNER JOIN Orders ON Persons.P_ID = Orders.P_ID

SELECT Persons.Last, Persons.First, Orders.OrderNo
FROM Persons LEFT OUTER JOIN Orders ON Persons.P_ID =
Orders.P_ID

SELECT Persons.Last, Persons.First, Orders.OrderNo
FROM Persons RIGHT OUTER JOIN Orders ON Persons.P_ID =
Orders.P_ID

But the following SQL creates an error when the following is run:

SELECT Persons.Last, Persons.First, Orders.OrderNo
FROM Persons CROSS JOIN Orders ON Persons.P_ID = Orders.P_ID

The error message: The data can not be loaded. Column not found: P_ID
in statement ...

I know that this outline will create a CROSS JOIN for any pair of tables:

SELECT table1 name.field name, table2 name.field name, ... FROM
table1 name, table2 name

So, it seems that this is one place where we should ignore the manual
(HSQLDB user guide 1.8). It may be that this has been corrected in the
2.2.8 user guide. It uses

FROM table1 name CROSS JOIN table2 name

OR

 FROM table1 name, table2 name

[libreoffice-users] Re: SQL statement in Base query

2012-07-18 Thread Andreas Säger
On this simple level I would consider HSQLDB as free of bugs whereas the
primitive Base parser fails in many different ways.
Did you try the direct SQL mode (SQL view, menu:EditRun SQL directly)? If
you get reasonable result in direct mode, it is one of many bugs in the
Base's SQL parser.

[libreoffice-users] query re. fonts ...

2012-07-18 Thread anne-ology
... Is it possible or not to keep one font as default?
in using Impress, each time I add text, I have to re-add the
font, et.al.

Is there some way to make the font the default for each particular

I use differing fonts with each file, but only one per file.

Has .5 taken care of this? - if so, I'll upgrade now.

Also you can remove the formatting contained in copied text by using

 Ctrl v
or use paste-special to paste as plain text.

Importing plain text from a .txt file is slightly different and doesn't
appear to have changed so it still works afaik.

Has this changed? ... if I were to determine how to update from .4

Greetings to you all. I'm new to Libre Office.

I'm wondering if there's a way to duplicate/replace attributes from one
paragraph to another in so that they are formatted identically.

A frequent problem for me (typically when I copy paste from elsewhere)
is that two sentences/paragraphs just won't line up properly (perhaps
 even
in a numbered list), I assume due to various formatting reasons including
different fonts, sizes, tabs, margins, alignment, and/or anything else
 that
might affect placement and display on the page. They seem to be the same
in the original source as far as I can tell, but once copied and pasted
 to
a document in Libre some of the paragraphs seem to get out of wack.

Trying to apply the exact same attributes to the paragraph or sentence
that's out of wack just doesn't seem to work - probably because I don't
know what attributes have been applied and/or simply don't know how to
 get
the same effect in a consistent way.

Perhaps there is an attribute tree mode so that I can see what set of
attributes has been applied? Either just plain text or perhaps through a
graphical representation maybe? I guess I don't need to see it if I can
simply apply from one to another - sort of like the eye dropper from a
paint program copies the color from one spot so you can apply the same
color to another spot only here instead of color, it would be text
  placement display attributes.

  Thank you in advance.

You have to click on the appropriate text inside the button/block.
Sometimes a 'button' has a couple of different links that do slightly
different things. It would be awkward to have a 3way button that had
 1. Normal download when you click the top half
 2. Torrent download when click the bottom half and
 3. Information when you click the right-hand-side

Putting all 3 together in a fake button means people usually wave their
mouse around and click on something and then work it out.

It's a good idea to keep the installer file (assuming you are on Windows)
for the version you are familiar with so that if you don't like the upgrade
then you can return to the familiar very easily. It's much less of an
issue by around .3, .4 and onwards because things have settled down a lot
by around then. It's more an issue when tons of new features have just
been added, such as with the .0 releases. That 3rd digit is a bit like a
Service Pack (like Xp Sp3 or Win7 Sp1).

So i will be downloading and installing the .5 with no qualms (but i'll
keep the .4 installer on 1 machine jic)

 (1) dunno. I suspect that Draw might be good for doing a time-line but

[libreoffice-users] Base fread-only

I have 2 databases created under OpenOffice 3.2 using Ubuntu Linux
10.04. Both databases have the same permissions and are in the same
directory so the parent permissions are also the same.

I purged OO and installed LO. Still using Ubuntu 10.04.

If I open one of my databases in LibreOffice 3.5.4.2 it works fine. If
I open the other, I can read it but I cannot add a new record nor can I
edit an existing record. It seems to somehow be marked as read-only.

I have been unable to find a way to make it read/write. I got around
the problem by exporting to a spreadsheet, creating a new database, and
importing to that database.

So I'm back in business. But for future reference, how the @#$%! do I
make the original read/write or at least get some sort of error message
- and yes I've checked the Linux log files for messages - no joy there.

All help appreciated.

It sounds like the file ownership got messed up.

Depending on how comfortable you are with using the terminal I would use
the following to change the ownership

chown username path-to-file/file.ext

For example the file is in your db sub folder of your Documents folder
the path is /home/username/Documents/db. The username is your log on
name for Ubuntu.

May or may not be ownership. The above can't hurt, however if it's
purely a permission problem then you probably want to do

chmod 644 path-to-file/file.ext
depending on your preferences. The above will give read/write
permission to the owner, read permission to anyone in your group, and
read permission to the world (world being anyone on the same machine as
you). Pretty standard permissions but you may want to deny all
permission to group and world in which case you'd use 600 instead of
644. I have no idea what the application requires in terms of
permissions, this is just a standard unix/Linux command.

I got spoiled with the GNOME on Ubuntu 10.04 and when Unity became the

Spring. I could be better now, but I do not know. I will have to
install it on my 12.04 laptop and test it out.

as to why I was using GNOME. it was a matter of curiosity as I am new to
unix (only had it for 2 weeks on the laptop) I wanted to experience
all that it had to offer me. still have a long way to go yet but GNOME 3
on my system is working fine and I would dare say that it when combined
with Docky makes a very nice environment to work in. there is a trade
off though. if you use it you lose assess to the Home Dash as it is a
core part of unity I believe. A good thing to rerember is that if your
windows key is mapped correctly it brings it up as well as the HUD
:)

There was a thread about problems with the desktop environment and LO

I have not been privy to the entire conversation but I to don't like the
Unity interface -- terrible for business.

I now have a desktop almost identical to my 10.04 Gnome Desktop. Apart
from minor problems with switching between Workspaces, and the need to
use a different key combo to add launchers to the panel it works as
advertised.

There are many tutorials on the web about this. Here is one...

How to install classic gnome desktop in Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise)
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-classic-gnome-desktop-in-ubuntu-12-04-precise.html

I run LO under this desktop without any problems.

Ah, a web-pager... wrong tool for the job eh? Using nabble, gmane.org,
etc from a web page is (IMO) like someone trying to use a spreadsheet
for a database job/application. I *highly* recommend using gmane.org
(via nntp). IMO, reading/replying to a high volume mailing list via
email and/or a web page, is just plain silly.

First of all it is *not* my bloody mailing list. It is the Document
Foundation's mailing list:
https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/

If you have an issue with the nabble gateway, then I suggest you take
that up with whoever created it, and/or is in charge of it. According to:

http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/

It appears that drewjenson created the template... perhaps you can ask
him for help. I seriously doubt that nabble doesn't follow threading and
doesn't insert quotes in replies. I don't use nabble (I use gmane.org
nntp), but perhaps you can RTFM find additional support for nabble here:
http://www.nabble.com/help/Index.jtp
http://support.nabble.com/

In any event, you should try to resolve the problem. You've been
'kindly' asked in the past to do so.

Learn how to quote properly and remain in the thread that you are
'supposedly' replying to. Seems that someone as astute as you purport to
be, you'd have RTFM and figured out how to this out by now.

This is from nabble. Does quoting work? And does the msg stay in the
original thread (Correct Syntax to address a table or form field in Base's
Basic)?

Why yes... it certainly does.
