[libreoffice-users] Avery 3x5 card form, portrait/landscape problem

2013-10-31 Thread william drescher
I need to print some 3x5 inch cards across the narrow side. This
would be portrait on each card. The Avery Letter Size 5386
label has 3 cards stacked on top of each other: eg the cards are
landscape on a page that is portrait.

When I load the template and switch the page to landscape,
instead of just rotating the page and template, LO rotates the
page but leaves the template as is. The result is that I have 2
- 3x5 cards on the first page, and 1 on the next page, all in
landscape orientation.

I know I could just rotate the text 90 degrees, but that is a bit
hard to read :-)

I can build my own template, but does anyone have other suggestions ?

bill

If I use Avery 5388 (without the rolodex cutouts), when I shift
to landscape, the template again does not rotate, I get 1 1/2
cards (in landscape) on the page. (The rest disappear).

I just looked at the Avery label set on their site. I cannot download
the template for some reason.

My first question is, why are you using a 3 card sheet instead of
printing actual index cards? Does you printer not support that size?
Most seem to be able to.
- - - -
Second, which version of LO are you using [and which OS].
- - - -
Third, well not a question really, it seems to me that the template
would not auto rotate the three text boxes when you rotate the paper.
- - - -
Fourth, have you tried to make a template yourself, using margins to get
the spacing correct, and making the page have 3 columns? I have done
something like this for specialty paper where I did not have access to a
template.

You create a page in landscape mode.

Input the text margins to get them at the sides of the index cards.

Make the rest a 3 column page.

You will need to watch out for the card's perferated edges so you do
not have any graphics, or stuff like that, occupy parts of the other
cards.

That is how I do it. Not as easy as using a template, but it works.

Just save an empty page as a template.

[libreoffice-users] OSX Mavericks upgrade prevents LO from opening because of lack of java

2013-10-31 Thread Marc Grober
It looks like the thread on addressing operating LO 4 under OSX
Mavericks may have taken a small detour.

Yes, Java is a bit of a disaster on OSX, and yes once you upgrade Apple
blows away your java install so you have to start all over (but will
prompt you to install their java.)

Assuming you accept their invitation on reboot (the install will invite
you to install an Apple Java jre) and then try to run LO (4.1.2.3) you
will likely get an error message that allows you to either install a
java (the install does not say what it is installing, nor from where) or
quits.

We therefore need specific documentation that advises the user as to
what to do in such circumstances (after throwing the tantrums that are
invariably associated with such transitions.)

Any specifics available yet?

When in doubt, get out a ruler and create a table.

Make sure it is set to proper cell size for each card.

Type/insert text. Rotate text.

It's a kludge, but it works.

[libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice 4.1.2 and Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks)

2013-10-31 Thread Marc Grober
I have rebooted and the crash on opening (the result of letting LO try
to install java from software update on 10.9) of LO 4.1.2.3 has stopped.
LO is now back to prompting for java (there is no access to LO itself)
Tried saying yes to LO's java install via Software Update again -- this
time it results in no change in behavior

Am I correct here in concluding that neither Apple nor Oracle offer a 32
bit java for Mavericks and that as a result users who have updated to
Mavericks will simply be barred from using LO henceforth until some
unspecified time in the future?

BRAVO!

Anyone know of an office suite that works with Mavericks, lol

if the problem is only in extensions, can one use the command line
unopkg to lost and delete the extension causing the problem?
BUT
isn't the zotero plugin java based, and how many thousands of users are
going to be happy about doing without zotero?

At the least, LO should put up a huge banner that says that LO will not
necessarily work with Mavericks and that users are advised NOT to upgrade

[libreoffice-users] Missing Hyphens in pdf Export (PDF/A-1a only)

2013-10-31 Thread CVAlkan
I have a fairly large (446 pages) but straightforward LibreOffice Writer
document from which I need to create a PDF/A-1a. When I exported to pdf, I
noticed that none of the hyphens showed up in the pdf; wherever there was
supposed to be a hyphen, there was a space, but no hyphen character.

I printed the same document using the CUPS-pdf printer, and the hyphens
appeared fine, but since I require more control over the pdf than that
driver provides, that isn't a good solution.

A little further testing showed that the hyphens disappeared whenever I
chose the PDF/A-1a option, and the problem can be reproduced fairly easily
by creating a document with several justified paragraphs, each using
different fonts if desired. Create two pdf exports - one with PDF/A-1a
checked, and one without it checked.

I'm using LibreOffice Version: 4.1.2.3, Build ID:
40b2d7fde7e8d2d7bc5a449dc65df4d08a7dd38 on 64 bit Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, but have
no idea if this behavior appears in earlier releases, since I never needed
to use the PDF/A-1a option.

Any comments would be welcome.

 Any comments would be welcome.

This is a known bug introduced in 4.1 line:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=67370

It affects all tagged PDF files (PDF/A-1 must be tagged, so is hit as
well) on Linux only.

Therefore, you can workaround this bug by:
- not using tagged PDF
- downgrading to 4.0.6 (or installing it in parallel and using it only
  for exporting PDFs)
- using Windows to create PDFs (in virtual machine, on another machine
or even trying to run LO through wine - although I don't know if it
  works).

[libreoffice-users] Are there solutions for starting LO 4.1.2.3 without java on OSX 10.9 where OSX upgrade as been done on LO with JVM selected

2013-10-31 Thread Marc Grober
It would seem that there are just a few options that a user might have
after they have upgraded to Mavericks (and I think it is critical
pending a resolution of the situatin that LO advise users NOT to upgrade
(especially if they have not turned use JVM off) without restoring 10.8
-- the most like require the ability to access LO to turn off Use
JVM... so,

1) Is there a way to start LO 4.1.2.3 from the command line with a
--withoutJVM switch
2) Is there a way to edit a preferences or set up file that will turn
off JVM usage (whatever impact that may have other the remaining
functionality of the product
3) If not, is there a way to remove a preferences or settings file to
that end

and of course will any of those options result being able to bring LO up
or will the Foundation issue an update quick enough to render this
discussion moot?

2013-10-31 Thread David Gast
I know I could just rotate the text 90 degrees, but that is a bit hard
 to read :-)

Make two styles. Type the text using the first style.
When you are ready to print, use the second style
with rotated text. After printing go back to the first
style.

There may be some size issues, but you should be able to get around those.

Best regards

[libreoffice-users] [interim solution] Are there solutions for starting LO 4.1.2.3 without java on OSX 10.9 where OSX upgrade as been done on LO with JVM selected

2013-10-31 Thread Marc Grober
No guarantees on this, and certainly no suggestions that it is an
elegant solution or the easiest

Go in to your config directory and rename the file ~/Library/Application
Support/LibreOffice/4/user/config javasettings_MacOSX_x86.xml.
Now start LO
This time LO will open though it will prompt you for a JRE. Ignore the
message and go to Preferences-Advanced and unclick the use JVM switch.
You may also have to go to Extension Manager and disable your Grammar
checker as it appears that this extension instantiates immediately
crashing LO before you can change prefs.
Now you can probably use LO, though Zotero will not work (it will will
prompt you for a JRE and then crash LO)

-- hopefully you can point LO towards a 64 bit java 1.7 install when LO
allows you to do that)
