In general, this PPA is _not_ for the average user to install without a closer look (if it would be, its packages would be in the main repositories). OTOH, it is _way_ _better_ to use packages from this PPA than using the *.deb files that The Document Foundation provides upstream. So, _if_ you want to be on the bleeding edge, do it here, not with upstream *.debs. end quote from https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ppa ... That is the problem with PPAs, the bleeding edge version. I would never recommend the PPA to people because it is the bleeding edge version. I only recommend the versions of LO that have .4 or larger at its tail end. That is 4.1.2 out, but 4.1.4 in. I waited till 4.1.4 to upgrade from the last of the 4.0.x line. And, if nothing changes, I may wait for 4.2.4 to upgrade to that new line. If the PPA only had the release versions of LO and not the nightly build or RC type of version of LO, then I would have to look into using the PPA again. I see no real problem in installing the .deb or the .rpm version of LO. Sure it has a few steps, but you know exactly which version you are installing. Right now, it is simple to do. 1 - download the files. 2 - un-archive them. 3 - rename the long folder name to Lib for the installer and Lib2 for the help pack. That is easier for me than typing the long folder names in the Terminal. [yes there may be a shorter way, but I keep forgetting it] 4 - go to the proper folder by doing cd Lib then cd DEBS. 5 - run the command sudo dpkg -i *.deb. Maybe one day I will make a script to do the #4 and #5 actions for me, but it is not really needed. Actually, it would be nice if someone included a .sh script in the packages so once it is un-archived, then all you need to to is run the script instead of going through all the steps to install it yourself. Yes, PPAs would be easier, but I do not want the bleeding edge versions. Anything to make it easier for our Linux users would be nice. Actually, it would be nice to have a script that would have some of the functions like the Windows installer does. That way it would be easier and you get to easily choose not to add the other languages, like French and Spanish, during the install. You give Windows users that option, but you require Linux users to include those languages unless they go into the .deb files and remove the proper packages needed, for installing the other languages that you do not want, without messing up the .deb or .rpm install. So having a script that asks you the language and dictionary questions would help. Actually, HP has their printer driver installer in a script, for the .deb installs. You run the script and are asked a question or three during the process. Then the script does all of the hard work, including making sure all of the dependencies are installed, if nay are needed. Of course, they have a MAKE command in the process that the LO installer would not need, but it is an idea. -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

[libreoffice-users] Index Quirks in Writer
I know the table of contents feature seems to work well, as I've used it quite a bit in the past. But creating an alphabetical index (a first for me, at least using Writer) seems to have a number of rather annoying features. I've provided an experiment you can do at the end, but first let me discuss the issues. 1) When creating an alphabetical index, the Columns feature works as expected, BUT ONLY FOR THE STANDARD (DEFAULT) PAPER SIZE! If I attempt to use columns on a 6 x 9 page, Writer still seems to assume a standard paper size and doesn't seem to know that I'm using a 6 x 9 page. Thus no matter how I try to tweak the setup, the right column is almost completely off the page on the right. So I can't use columns for the Index - Bummer, but not the end of the world. 2) If I go through and highlight each entry that I want indexed, everything works great (so far as I can tell), and I have the options for match case and whole words only. But in a long document, using a concordance file certainly seems to make more sense, and it SEEMS TO WORK, but it actually doesn't. Issue a) No matter what boxes are checked, Writer goes and marks ALL instances of whatever the concordance entry has: regardless of whether or not it is a whole word or whether the capitalization matches. Issue b) If you add another entry to the concordance file and Update Index/Table, all instances (even incorrect ones) of the new entry are indeed marked within the file and added to the index, but every earlier entry GETS AN ADDITIONAL marker. As I modify the concordance file to add new items and update the index, I find that the earliest entries have as many markers as the number of updates I've done. Here's an experiment you can do: Open a new document using whatever standard size is in effect. At the top of the document, type dt and press F3. This generates the dummy text. In a separate text editor create a concordance file with the following entries: Breeze;Breeze;;;0;0 Long;Long;;;0;0 Self;Self;;;0;0 Wrist;Wrist;;;0;0 Back in the document, create a new index at the bottom of the page, and mark Case Sensitive. Then choose the concordance file created above. You'll see that the words himself and along are marked in the document and included in the index as Self and Long, even though these words never appear in the text. Now add the following entry to the concordance file: Eat;Eat;;;0;0 Find it? It actually marked the last three letters of the word sweat which doesn't match the case. In a three hundred plus page document with a surname index this tends to make the index pretty useless, since it's cluttered with erroneous entries which will drive you nuts looking on a referenced page to find something that just isn't there. Sadly, I've obviously done that, which brings up another issue: How do I get rid of the index markers? Going through one by one is far too tedious. I recall that the alternate search and replace had a selection for index under properties, but the I downloaded that and the latest version seems to have a serious bug which doesn't let you get to a specific entry on the drop down list for properties so that's out. And I don't know if that would be what I need anyway. Any help would be appreciated. -- View this message in context: http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Index-Quirks-in-Writer-tp4093936.html Sent from the Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Frank Hi Frank, For some unexplained reason The Document Foundation board chose to use a modified edition of the Askbot software [1] which, unlike Askbot's own forum [2], does not allow you to set up a local log-in account. If you dare suggest that you do not want to have a third party social media account, you run the risk of at least one TDF board member calling you a paranoid freak [3]. I was working with a small (only 40-50 seat) client company on a proposal for migrating to LibreOffice. Mistakenly, in the process of showing them the software's features, I demonstrated the new Help - Send Feedback Ask a question option, which ultimately leads to the AskLibO site. The client asked me why they or their staff would be required to have a third party social media account to use that service. Unlike some TDF board members, I do not make it a practice to tell my clients that they need to get a life and get over their stupid paranoia. Re: [libreoffice-users] Index Quirks in Writer
CVAalkin, The last time I worked with LO indexes, I was trying to make an alphabetic sort of the table of contents (heading styles), which did not work. So, I am not all that experienced with indexes. I find them a bit of a pain to create. However, the paper size problem you mentioned may be just a matter of changing the Index entry paragraph style(s). You might try that to bring your margins in. HTH. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: low traffic lately?
+1 I have been working with general purpose computers since the mid 70s and made a pretty good career out of it until I retired 10 years ago. I don't do facebook because it violates my computer security rules and I strongly disagree with facebook's data-mining business model. In my view, the reason email, BBs, and forums like this one seem to be out of favor is that general purpose computers are becoming dinosaurs in favor of mainstream ipads and smart phones. Last year I upgraded my 10-year-old desktop computer and discovered new components are becoming difficult to find. This may be the last time I can upgrade it, since I suspect in 10 years, the desktop computer will not be available. That gives me a warm fuzzy, but then in 10 years I may not care. The way I see it, if someone only allows responses from me via facebook and/or twitter, then they don't get a response, which effectively self-limits their help. This is due to the 0;0 at the end of each entry. These two options represent Match case;Word only. CVAlkan wrote How do I get rid of the index markers? Going through one by one is far too tedious. Right-click on the index Edit Index/Table... Index/Table tab Options section pull down the concordance list and selection Edit... and then you can check case and word only entries as required. Clicking OK/OK, should immediately update the document. -- View this message in context: http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/Index-Quirks-in-Writer-tp4093936p4093963.html Sent from the Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

I've tried using AskLO several times and have never figured out how to set up an account, so I hope you don't drop this in favor of AskLO. Maybe I'm just dense (and I've only been using computers and bulletin boards and mailing lists and their descendants since the mid-80s), but all I see are ways to sign in using Google or Facebook and so forth, and I don't have any of those accounts, and don't want them, since I get enough spam already and don't have much interest in cat videos or what my neighbors had for dinner. Sorry - I'll go away now. I will use a mailing list or forum. -- openSUSE 13.1(Linux 3.11.6-4-desktop x86_64| Intel(R) Quad Core(TM) i5-4440 CPU @ 3.10GHz|8GB DDR3| GeForce 8400GS (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.38)|KDE 4.12.1 -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
