[libreoffice-users] Corrupt odt document recovery with red arrows - LO 4.1.3

2014-04-03 Thread Lars Kjos

Hello,

First, I have been writing a document for a couple of days when Writer
crashed. LibreOffice version was 4.1.3

When Writer was restarted the recovery option came up where I chose to
do this. I have previously experienced crashes, but recovery has always
gone well with the exception of a few words missing, which is to be
expected.

This time the document came up with only about one third of the document
(the first part) where the same text was repeated several times down the
pages. There was also a red arrow down at the right at the end of each
repetition pointing to the right. I am writing was, because I have not
dared to open it again until I understand what has happened or know what
to do, or if it is possible to do anything that is. I am hoping the red
arrow signifies hidden continuation of the document where all text is
still there, but as implied I do not know.

The document itself is an important one where I have done a lot of
though process to get it right, so some guidance would be very much
appreciated.

I wrote was 4.13, because I have in the meantime upgraded to LO 4.1.5.

Thanks.

Best regards,
Lars

Re: [libreoffice-users] Company Move: Need to Know

2014-04-03 Thread Mark Stanton
Hi Sqwuiddy,

I think you'd be best hiring someone in for a few days to help you
with this. There are several questions that need answers to help
further.

In general you should be ok on many of these things, I'm not certain
about all of them.

Nested IF statements do work.

Where is the data that you're merging? How are you accessing it? It
sounds like you know what you're doing with data in general, so it
might just be an LO-related issue. Incorrectly accessing that data
often results in not merging. When you say none of the merge fields
merged, what, precisely, happened?

Sorry, I don't have time for more.

Regards
Mark

[libreoffice-users] Table of Contents - hidden codes?

2014-04-03 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz
Good evening
I did write a few books that are now available as Kindle versions.
Trying to publish them elsewhere too (Smashwords) I had to reformat (I
will spare you the details here) everything.
I tried to do that following the instructions word by word (to the best
of my knowledge) and submitted the file.
That site then converts the file using the so-called meatgrinder to a
number of formats.

Problem
I am told, that the conversion to epub did not work and there are
problems with the TOC.
Placed manually bookmarks in the text, entered plain text for the TOC,
then inserted manually one hyperlink
for each bookmark. That is how I am supposed to do it.

Now, the TOC looks fine to me, all items are hyperlinks, all are
working; both in LO and after saving that file as a Word file.
Nevertheless the TOC in the epub version shows only the first 4 items.
All the rest has disappeared.

My screen DOES NOT show any anomaly I can see.

Question:
IS there some formatting information HIDDEN somewhere in the file?
How can I find and display that? (Ctrl-F10 display hidden characters is ON)
Clearly there MUST be something, since one line of the TOC is working
just fine, but the next (and everything below it) is not.

I would greatly appreciate any hints.
Thank you.
Thomas

Re: [libreoffice-users] Page margins

2014-04-03 Thread Tim Deaton
I don't think the OP was talking about printing different pages of the
same sheet. He referred to changing margins of one sheet and having
the margins for the other sheets be affected as well. In Excel I can
change margins for only one sheet (or tab) just by going to |File|Page
Setup|Margins|.

In Calc, I had to hunt to find where I'd done the same thing. It first
appeared that I cold go to |File|Page Preview|Format Page|, and then
select the |Organizer| tab and change the Style Name to something
unique, then go to the |Page| tab and change my margins the way I want
them. However, THAT FAILED because it just changed the name of the
style that was already listed there.

SOLUTION:
Actually, once on the sheet you want to change, hit [F11] (or go to
|Format|Styles and Formatting|) and then click the second icon (Page
Styles). The active Page style was highlighted (white text on a gray
background). Then click on the next-to-last icon (New Style From
Selection) and enter a new Style name, which adds that name to the
list. Next, double-click on the new name to make it the style for the
sheet you are on, then right-click on the new name and select |Modify|,
which brings up the Page Style box. Make the changes you desire and
click |OK|. Now, that sheet has a unique page style which will not
affect any other sheets.

I hope this helps.

Should I list this as a bug?

No, it is common behaviour.
You can apply different page styles for different sheets. Pls see
F11 and the Help for more info :)

This might be something to add to the list of differences between MSO
and LO. This one drives me nuts frequently! As much as we all think
LO is obviously the superior product, we do need to remember that
most people will be coming to it from MSO and will want to know what
to be watching out for.

Are you quite sure that you can easily print different pages of the
same sheet of a spreadsheet document with different page layouts
(margins, orientation, etc.) in Microsoft Excel? If so, please tell
us exactly how to do this. If not, you are apparently being weirdly
driven nuts by a non-existent difference.

Perhaps you are confusing this with either printing different sheets
of the same spreadsheet or printing different pages from the same text
document in different layouts - both of which you can do very easily
in LibreOffice.

Unless I've got this completely wrong, do please take care not to
advertise a prejudice as if it were a genuine fault with the
application which is the topic of this list.

If that is the case, it may be a problem with the config users files.
1 - Close LO.
2 - I would rename the hidden folder of .config/libreoffice/4/user to
/user-old

3 - reopen LO

that should recreate a new user folder like it would with a new
install. Then test out the envelope printing. If it does not work,
then there is a different issue.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Do Macros run serially or in parallel?

So, are you saying that you have:

Print #giInit, 1.   + Now()

Print #giInit, 2.   + Now()

And it prints the same value for now?

For some reason the wait(2000) commands that I inserted into the the macros
don't seem to work and I am getting several lines with the identical time
stamps, like this -
1. 03/04/2014 23:44:57
2. 03/04/2014 23:44:57
3. 03/04/2014 23:44:57

I looked up the formatting for time stamps and
DD:MM: hh:mm:ss.00 is supposed to give fractions of a second, but I
don't know how to apply this to the Now() function.

The code I am using to print to the text files is -

  giInit = FreeFile()
Open D:\LibreOffice\InitfTransEntry.txt for Output as giInit
  Print #giInit, 1.   + Now()

Any suggestions as to how I can format Now(), or should I use a different
function to get more accurate timing?

Thanks,

Hi,

In opening my database accounting system, I trigger via the Form: When

initialisation routines.

As the Form loads it displays the first record in the database, including
the account number. To make things easier for the user, the Text
modified
event on the account number control, triggers a macro, (Sub AccName()),
that displays the account name.

And I assume that this is built into the form.

Sometimes the system has crashed because it seems that Sub AccName() has

fired before Sub Init() has finished. (Sub AccName() depends on some of
the structures that Sub Init() sets up.)

Is it possible that both Subs are running in parallel or do they always
run
in series on a first come first served basis?

Warning: Speculation... So insert the following text before each statement
below: I am making a wild unsubstantiated guess that

1. The form is populated before Init() finishes
2. AccName() is called as soon as text is pushed into the control.

So, if this is the case, then AccName may be called before Init()
finishes. If you really want to know if they run at the same time, you
could do a not so quick test and modify each routine so that the macro does
something like this:

Sub Init()
Write current time to a file
   delay a second or two
   Do the work
   delay a second or two
Write the current time to a file
End Sub

Use a different file for each subroutine, then compare the start and end
time to see if they overlap. You can probably get away with using a simple
print statement at the start and end.

If the latter, are there coding techniques that can be used to ensure that

Sub Init() always runs first?

If things run serially and AccName is called based on something done in
Init(), it may be possible that Init() cannot complete until after
  AccName() finishes.

I suppose that another possibility is to set a Global variable such as
InitComplete. set to false when Init() starts, and set to true when it
completes. Modify AccName to check for InitComplete. If things are serial,
then you may need to simply return. If not, then have AccName wait for a
few seconds and try again. If things are truly serial, then I would expect
them to fail every time, and they don't fail every time, so it is likely
not the case.

If the former, how can I ensure that Sub AccName() waits until Sub Init()
has finished?

Oh wait, see above! :-)

Can someone point me to any articles on this subject?

Thanks,

The source code for MS DOS 1.1 and 2.0 is available for download here.
Word for Windows 1.1a can be found here.

Looks to me like they're playing it safe, to say the least. Despite
being prehistoric as well, they didn't even dare release the source code
of version 6.20 or even 3.20!

As for Word 1.1a I doubt it could be of any practical interest, given
the file formats are usually backwards incompatible from one version to
the next... :-)

So yes, it all might be techinically quite interesting, but in the end I
think it's nothing more than a publicity stunt.

Judging from the following two points, among the first ones presented in
the licence agreement one lands on when clicking on the link in the
article, I reckon the source code basically stays secret, or at least
is light-years away from free as in FLOSS:

* You may not distribute or publish the software or Derivative Works.
* You may publish and present papers or articles on the results of your
research, and while distribution of all or substantial portions of the
software is not permitted, you may include in any such publication or
presentation an excerpt of up to fifty (50) lines of code for
illustration purposes.

Given such a restrictive licence, they could as well have published
substantial parts of Windows 95 or Word of that era with some confidence...

Working with the Computer History Museum, we are making this code
available to the public for the first time, he announced.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Do Macros run serially or in parallel?

2014-04-03 Thread Marion Noel Lodge
Hi Andrew,

Yes, that is what seems to be happening. Even if there is a bit of code
between the Wait(2000) and the next Print #giInit, the time is the same.
Only if there is substantial code after the Wait(2000) does the time
change. For example -
1. 04/04/2014 13:50:24
2. 04/04/2014 13:50:24
3. 04/04/2014 13:50:24
4. 04/04/2014 13:50:24
5.  B4 UpdateFundAndGenLed()  04/04/2014 13:50:24
6. 04/04/2014 13:50:28
7. 04/04/2014 13:50:28

After 5. the Init macro calls another macro.

Something odd seems to be happening with the Wait command. Perhaps I am
missing something. You can see why I was wanting to get fractions of a
second in the print statements.

Noel

So, are you saying that you have:

 Print #giInit, 1.   + Now()
 Wait(2000)
 Print #giInit, 2.   + Now()

And it prints the same value for now?

Thanks for the replies to my original post.

They gave me something to work on and I have made some progress. I think
that the macros run in series, but I am not yet sure of that.

For some reason the wait(2000) commands that I inserted into the the
 macros
don't seem to work and I am getting several lines with the identical time
 stamps, like this -
 1. 03/04/2014 23:44:57
 2. 03/04/2014 23:44:57
 3. 03/04/2014 23:44:57

I looked up the formatting for time stamps and
DD:MM: hh:mm:ss.00 is supposed to give fractions of a second, but I
don't know how to apply this to the Now() function.

The code I am using to print to the text files is -

   giInit = FreeFile()
Open D:\LibreOffice\InitfTransEntry.txt for Output as giInit
   Print #giInit, 1.   + Now()

Any suggestions as to how I can format Now(), or should I use a different
function to get more accurate timing?

 Thanks,

 Noel

Sadly, I do not have a definitive answer to your question, but I do have

  Hi,

In opening my database accounting system, I trigger via the Form: When
loading event, a macro, (Sub Init()), containing the database
 initialisation routines.

As the Form loads it displays the first record in the database,
 including
the account number. To make things easier for the user, the Text
 modified
event on the account number control, triggers a macro, (Sub AccName()),
 that displays the account name.

And I assume that this is built into the form.

Sometimes the system has crashed because it seems that Sub AccName()
 has

fired before Sub Init() has finished. (Sub AccName() depends on some of
the structures that Sub Init() sets up.)

Is it possible that both Subs are running in parallel or do they always
 run
in series on a first come first served basis?

Warning: Speculation... So insert the following text before each
 statement
below: I am making a wild unsubstantiated guess that

 1. The form is populated before Init() finishes
 2. AccName() is called as soon as text is pushed into the control.

So, if this is the case, then AccName may be called before Init()
finishes. If you really want to know if they run at the same time, you
could do a not so quick test and modify each routine so that the macro
 does
 something like this:

 Sub Init()
Write current time to a file
delay a second or two
Do the work
delay a second or two
Write the current time to a file
 End Sub

Use a different file for each subroutine, then compare the start and end
time to see if they overlap. You can probably get away with using a
 simple
print statement at the start and end.

If the latter, are there coding techniques that can be used to ensure
 that

 Sub Init() always runs first?

If things run serially and AccName is called based on something done in
Init(), it may be possible that Init() cannot complete until after
   AccName() finishes.

I suppose that another possibility is to set a Global variable such as
InitComplete. set to false when Init() starts, and set to true when it
completes. Modify AccName to check for InitComplete. If things are
 serial,
then you may need to simply return. If not, then have AccName wait for a
few seconds and try again. If things are truly serial, then I would
 expect
them to fail every time, and they don't fail every time, so it is likely
 not the case.

If the former, how can I ensure that Sub AccName() waits until Sub
 Init()
 has finished?

  Oh wait, see above! :-)

Can someone point me to any articles on this subject?

 Thanks,

 Noel

Re: [libreoffice-users] Company Move: Need to Know

2014-04-03 Thread A

Firstly,

Part of our company has moved completely to LibreOffice and removed
Microsoft Office from their computers. I have tried programming mail merge
templates on my computer, and then having them open it on theirs, and the

First, you should know that you want to work only with the .odt format.
.doc isn't going to work.

Second, AFAIK, you have to reinsert any fields. I have no idea why.
With 300 templates, that's a bit of a chore. However one bit of
knowledge might make it slightly easier for you. Here's a copy of a
post I made recently:

~
... one thing I recently learned is that you can keep the fields window
open while inserting all your fields.

There are arrow buttons/icons that In some cases you can simply click
those and it will move you from document field to document field... So
you click the arrow, insert field... click... insert... click
insert. Makes it a whole lot faster when you don't close the window
between each insertion like I was doing at first.

In the event the arrow icons don't work (because it doesn't recognize
the fields yet), you can still scroll the document and keeping the
fields window open still makes it faster than closing and reopening it.
Hopefully that will ease your pain a bit.

~
There might be a way to write a program to reinsert fields, I have no
idea how, it's just a thought that might spark someone else's thought
process.

The first error we encountered was that the IF
statements that I built didn’t function at all. I simply wanted to make an
“X” appear when a field contained a certain value. These were if statements
that would function on my computer. The second error was that… well, none of
the merge fields merged. When I re-inserted them they worked fine, but they
wouldn’t pull from the database even after re-registering it. My question

You'll need to post more detail on these points for anyone to help, I think.

here is, does Word give Libre Writer a leg up if both programs are on one
computer? Is that why when I moved a document I’d programmed and tested to
success in Libre Writer to another computer without Microsoft Office it
wouldn’t function? This is essential to know; because I’m helping others
troubleshoot their issues.

Doubtful. I'd suggest posting your function here for folks to ponder.

Nested IF Statements:

Is this possible? I have tried a variety of things and I’ve done a good deal
of research, and I’ve hit a wall. We cannot move forward if we do not have
the capability of creating nested if statements.

I would think so... but have never tried it. Again... post specifics
for others to ponder (Having now finally made it through your novella, I
see that you did post an example way, way at the bottom - others may
want to take a peek down there) however there doesn't seem to be
anyone else responding... no doubt because of the subject line. It's
not an actual specific question.

IF Statements resulting in a Mail Merge Field:

So far I have only been able to make conditional mail merge fields
hide/appear using hidden sections. This is not a practical technique for us,
as our documents are built almost entirely on conditionally revealed values.
I have researched this as much as I could, it seems I cannot create a
conditional statement that results in a mail merge field, but I wanted to
confirm.

It's been my experience that you may want to limit your requests for
help to one (at most two) different issues per email. Otherwise it's
just too overwhelming for most people to deal with. And you'll find
that different people have different experience with each issue... so
you'll get a better/wider response if you write a subject line that
matches the specific question. I'd suggest reposting as I just
described. Pick one problem, post, wait a bit for a response, deal with
that then post your next issue. Obviously if you get answers... you can
just ignore me :)

Formatting Fields:

We regularly use a formatting switch on our mail merge fields in Word 2010
called “DollarText.” This takes a number from an Excel spreadsheet and
spells it out, like below:

Cell Value: $1,231.67
Formatted: One thousand, two hundred and thirty one dollars and sixty seven
cents.

That's one I can sort of help with... I needed the same thing. I had
to create a an extra field in the spreadsheet with the dollartext
formula. Unfortunately, my solution won't help because I did my
spreadsheet in google spreadsheet. However, I was able to find
something just now... which again is probably not very useful, but I
don't want to prejudge what you can or can't do, so this link
http://extensions.libreoffice.org/extension-center/sumtex-sum-as-text
has something which appears to be something like what you need... the
bad news is it's not in English and I have no idea how to use it or any
further information.
