Re: [libreoffice-users] compatibility with Microsoft Access
Hi lalitadatta What Tom writes below are very good points. I can understand that it may be a bit too much detail but it is valuable information for the school involved. It really puzzles me why schools teach concepts based on MS with a lock in policy while there is so much better software available for free as in freedom and price, running on almost every operating system and being implemented on large scale in a professional environment. In short: Software you want students to work with. In my opinion you would do the school, the parents and not at least the students a favour by handing over this mail to the school/teacher involved. Having said that, my daughter is using OpenOffice and LibreOffice for 9 years now. She is starting with her master and never used MS Office - despite all efforts of the schools and universities to force her into MS Office - for example by mandating MS Word style sheets for a thesis. The school/teacher is welcome on this list or personal if questions arise and I really hope you hand this over though it does not answer your question directly. Concerning hardware in addition to what is said by others: Don't expect miracles from the T100 but it should be able to do the job. Lack of internal memory will force your daughter in time to move larger files to a usb-disk or stick - i.e. movies in paticular. There are also models with more memory, 64GB. You may want to (let someone) remove all unneeded pre-installed software you get for free since this will free memory and increases performance. [libreoffice-users] Split Screen in Writer?
Hi: I already know I'm becoming senile, but I'm sure it used to be possible to use a split screen to compare/edit/copy from one part of the same document to another. I'm currently doing trying to do such comparing/editing/copying, and the only way I can do it is to open another window, which accomplishes something similar, but because I have several other windows (and even apps) open, Alt-Tabbing becomes very tedious. I realize that I can click the mouse in the Window I want to switch to, but when one is on a roll while typing that is also distracting. Did there used to be such a split screen capability (and I also recall there was some simple keystroke sequence that permitted jumping from one to the other without using Alt+Tab) in LibreOffice? If so, where did it go? If it's still there, how do I access it? If it makes a difference, I'm using the SideBar. I'm also using LO 4.3.3.2 on 64-bit Ubuntu, and can't upgrade to any newer version because of the various table and frame bugs that have appeared recently. [libreoffice-users] extensions not shown completely
Good evening I have LibreOffice installed on Windows and Linux machines. I noticed, that while on the Windows machine Tools - Extension Manager shows all installed extensions, under xubuntu 14.04 the extension manager opens and shows the spelling dictionaries, but not 4-5 other extensions. Those other extensions ARE there, since when I try to reinstall, the computer asks me, if I want to overwrite them. These file extensions show up fine under kubuntu 14.04. Why are those extensions not shown? Is there anything I can do about it? Trying to update existing extentions results in errors like file xxx does not exist, or in case of a file/extension that DOES exist: error during file opening. Where am I supposed to look for what? Lest anyone should take this at face value, may I point out that this is untrue? You are confusing memory and disk space. As you say, 64 gigabytes is a lot of memory - but it's quite small for a disk drive. Limited memory will restrict the system's performance, but stored files take up disk space, not memory. Moving saved files to external devices can free up disk space but this doesn't affect performance - unless the disk is almost full, that is. Even a larger video file makes no demands on memory unless it is actually in use. The only sense in which unneeded software can affect performance is if it is secretly loaded at start-up or log-in. Disabling such default behaviour can be wise - but there is no additional advantage in removing the products. [libreoffice-users] JDBC-connector to MySQL database
Hello, I have been using a JDBC-connection to a remote MySQL-Database for years. It has been working like a charm in general. There is one rather annoying problem, however: I have a table with the name inventar (German for inventory). I can access this table using a command-line client (mysql ... from Linux) as well as using the native MySQL connector. However, when using JDBC http://www.coderanch.com/forums/f-3/JDBC, the table content is NOT displayed at all. All the other (some 80 in number) are accessible through JDBC without problems. There are 1316 tuples (records) in the table. I don't see any error messages in any of the logs I wonder what's the problem... Below is the table definition: DROP TABLE IF EXISTS inventar; CREATE TABLE inventar (nummer INTEGER NOT NULL, bezeichnung VARCHAR (255) not null default ' ', stueckZahl INTEGER not null default 1, anschDatum DATE not null DEFAULT '1999-09-01',/* Anschaffungsdatum */ fvbNr INTEGER not null default 0, /* Firmennummer des Lieferanten */ typBesch CHAR(1) not null default 'k', /* Miete, Kauf, Leihe, Spende,... */ anschKosten FIXED (11,2) default 0, /* Anschaffungskosten in EUR */ repKosten FIXED (11,2) default 0, /* aufgelaufene Reparaturkosten in EUR */ abschreibung FIXED (11,2) default 0, /* aufgelaufene Abschreibung in EUR */ datEliminiert DATE NOT NULL DEFAULT '1999-09-01',/* aus Inventar ausgeschieden am... */ vorhanden SMALLINT NOT NULL default 1, /* Menge laut Inventur */ invDat DATE not null default '1999-09-01',/* Inventur-Datum */ bemerkung VARCHAR (255) not null default ' ', PRIMARY KEY (nummer), UNIQUE INDEX (nummer), INDEX (fvbNr), INDEX (typBesch), FOREIGN KEY (fvbNr) REFERENCES fvbPartner(nummer), FOREIGN KEY (typBesch) REFERENCES invBeschTyp(code) ) CHARACTER SET latin1 COLLATE latin1_german1_ci ENGINE=InnoDB ; -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: users+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Hi :) This method is not as neat as it is in Calc but open your document and then; Windows (menu at the very top of the screen hidden along the same line as the timedate (errr, that is more complicated than on any other platform thanks to the weird UI in Ubuntu)) then Open new window Err, they open kinda on top of each other but just grab the 'title-bar' and move it fast against the left or right-hand side of the screen so that the mouse kinda bangs up against the side or even overshoots a bit. As with many OSes these days (excluding Xp) that makes that window fill half the screen. Grab the other window and bang it against the other side of the screen to get them both side-by-side. You can now scroll one without affecting the other (except that text you type into one of them appears in the other (if you can scroll to where the new text should be)). Re: [libreoffice-users] Split Screen in Writer?
Hi :) Err, of course you could have 1 window open on each workspace. Once you have opened a window do; shift Ctrl Alt and the down or right arrow on the keyboard. that moves the window to one of the other workspaces. Then to get back to the first workspace do the same combo without the shift key, ie so; Ctrl Alt and up or left Oddly Kubuntu doesn't react to either of those keyboard combos. Hi :) 32Gb hard-drive is probably bearable in Windows. It really means keeping everything possible off the hard-drive so the Cloud, usb-sticks and external drives do become vital and each has advantages. You are not going to be able to store many movies but normal documents, photos and things like those should be fine. Re: [libreoffice-users] compatibility with Microsoft Access
Hi :) Yes and no. Mostly Yes. I've always found that Windows slows down when the hard-drive is over 20% full. Then another minor drop in speed after around 50% full. Then over 80% full makes it almost unusable. There are plenty of other factors so the percentage of hard-drive filled up only gets really noticeably painful at the 80% full mark. So i guess i 80% agree with Brian there. Weirdly the specs page http://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/ASUS_Transformer_Book_T100TA/specifications/ says Storage 64Gb eMMc, 32Gb eMMc with 500Gb hard-drive which is the typically cryptic set of figures we all get used to in the IT industry, especially in Sales where they want to mystify us. 500Gb sounds like a lot and it's pretty standard for a shop-bought machine these days but it's quite pitiful now that 6Tb drives are available. If you buy a storage drive these days the sweet-spot for £/space is around 3-4Tb but i was recently reading that 3Tb drives have been disappointingly short-lived (although mine seems mostly fine still). 500Gb is plenty for a working machine but it'll only hold around 20-50 movies so try not to have tooo many stored! ;) You'll probably 'need' a few though. I'm guessing the eMMc figures mean Ram but as Brian pointed out that is nothing to do with storage. It's got more to do with speed but it's not really a clear-cut relationship. It's more to do with how many things you can have open at the same time as each other and how responsive they can be as you switch between them. 32Gb is likely to be tolerable but 64Gb kinda future-proofs it a bit. Windows always needs shed loads more than a Linux or Mac. These days my Linux machine has around 2Gb and i generally have a movie and a game and tons of tabs open in my web-browser along with whatever i am working on. My works machine has 1Gb but then i don't watch movies or play games at work. Just a few YouTube things for research and sometimes Facebook to dip into at odd moments briefly. You may want to (let someone) remove all unneeded pre-installed software you get for free since this will free memory and increases performance. Lest anyone should take this at face value, may I point out that this is untrue? You are confusing memory and disk space. As you say, 64 gigabytes is a lot of memory - but it's quite small for a disk drive. Limited memory will restrict the system's performance, but stored files take up disk space, not memory. Re: [libreoffice-users] compatibility with Microsoft Access
Hi again :) Blimey!!! I have just seen that if you want Access in one of the proper MS Office bundles then you would have to get MS Office Professional at around £390, nearly £400!! http://products.office.com/en-GB/buy/compare-microsoft-office-products The other MS Office 365 bundles, Home and Personal, do have Access and allow you to pay monthly (although that works out as more expensive in the long run). Note the Home and Student bundle is for 2013 (sop it only gets 15Gb Online storage) instead of 365 and the link i just gave conveniently misses out the MS Office 365 University bundle. So it'll suddenly demand payment when you use it and those demands will get more insistent as the time-limit gets closer. I'm not sure if it is automatic actually nor when it's demands start (assume they do). I'm not sure how to convince it that you have installed a different version of MS Office. In the good old days (they weren't really that good tho ;) ) a new machine would have a full version of MS Office. Times change though. Advantages of 365 over regular MS Office 213. apart from actually having Access, include £60 for a 4 year license rather than £109 for forever. Err, is that an advantage? I guess it is because in about 4 years there will be the next version to upgrade to, ie to buy/rent. Also allows you to install on up to 4-5 devices/machines such as desktops, laptops, notebooks, netbooks, tablets, phones (errr Windows phone is a tad sub-optimal compared to Android as it tends to suffer the usual Windows problems such as slowdowns after 6months). With other versions of MS Office the license key can only be used on a new machine when you phone up MS and tell them you are removing it from your previous machine. Corporate users sometimes get to install it at home as well as at work but that's seldom known about and impractical (try getting your IT department to give you the key for MS Office and you'll see what i mean). Biggest advantage with 365 is that you get 1Tb (=1024 Gb in theory but possibly more likely to be around 800-900Gb = still masses of space) 'free' Cloud storage on the MS OneDrive (which is apparently hosted on Linux servers btw! Jic you were interested. Strangely strange right?). The regular version of MS Office 2013 gives you 15Gb. So it is really good for students who may have to use many different systems and possibly include a lot of travel. This online storage space reduces the need for external storage but it takes time to upload/download stuff so it's probably best to sync the main machine (the notebook) with the Cloud for most stuff and then just download (or view online)/upload only when it's a small number of files. Of course the biggest problem is compatibility with whatever version of MS Office the teacher/lecturer is using. If he/she is using MS Office 2010 or 2007 then it might be better to buy the same version and try to find the right bundle to make sure you do get Access. However it is quite likely that at least 1 student is likely to have 2013 or 365 and that might prompt the teacher/lecturer to upgrade to one of the those 2 newer versions. If they are using a more recent version of MS Office than you then they will probably use features that wont work on an older version of MS Office and some files might not work at all or more likely just look a bit odd. If you are using a more recent version of MS Office than the teacher/lecturer then you just have to avoid using some of the latest fancy features otherwise they may have trouble coping with your files.
