Hi :)
Kinda ignore the 4th digit. It's the 3rd one that is much more important.

The 3rd digit is a lot like the "Service Pack" numbers used by Microsoft.
Just divide our 3rd digit by 2 and round down.

So, when you say 4.4.2, that is roughly like having Sp1 on the 4.4.x
branch. It is good but a lot of people would wait for the x.x.4. The
4.4.1 is in the same branch but doesn't have as many bug-fixes as the
4.4.2 Both have all the same functionality but the x.x.2 has solved more
problems and quirkiness so it is likely to be more easier to use.

The 3.3.6 has a very high Sp number. Sp3. So it's had all the bug-fixes
and "smoothing out" that it's branch is going to get. However the first
two digits show that it's quite an old branch now. A bit like having
Windows 98 with Service Pack 3. It's very solid and reliable but it lacks
a LOT of functionality (and compatibility with Microsoft formats) so it is
probably a good idea to upgrade.

In your position i would guess that 4.3.6 would be an ideal version for
you. 4.3.5 would be ok. 4.3.4 would probably be tolerable.

I try to give my clients and colleagues versions with a high Sp number,
almost definitely over x.x.3 - but for myself i try to use the newer branch
so i can try to spot any problems or even positive new things that my
friends and colleagues might have trouble adjusting to.

I hope that clarifies things a little bit! Does any of that help you
understand more about the version numbers or does it still seem a bit
random?
Regards from
Tom :)

I tried www.zamzar.com but Pagemaker 6.5 files can't be converted using this

the Mac platform.

Where do I find the documentation of which versions of Pagemaker should work
with LO? I don't remember reading which versions were designed to work in
the docs but it quite likely that I didn't find the right URL.

Ooops. Then LibreOffice can not open that file because the file is not a
pagemaker file, a corrupted pagemaker file or an unsupported pagemaker file.

Try http://www.zamzar.com or find some machine with pagemaker up and
running and let it export your files to whatever suitable.

Since these files are quite old, it is possible that the files are
corrupted. I've had them inside a zip archive and tried new unarchived
versions with the same result.

I did receive an email from someone regarding submitting the file for
bug testing. I seem to have misplaced that email so would you mind
sending me the link again? Thanks and apologies.

Need a little help to export from odt to pdf the translated to italian
wg; problem is fields (cross references) regarding figures are not
exported properly; for instance the sentence "see figure 10" becomes
"see 10" and the word figure is lost.

Hi,

I had the same problem in translating the LO Getting Strated guide using
OmegaT to Slovak. I solved it 'manually'. In OmegaT a string with Figure
reference being translated looks like this:

The technical names for common controls are shown in Figure 1:
Názvy bežných ovládacích prvkov sú uvedené na obrázku 1:

Instead of keeping translation 'obrázku' of 'Figure' inside the t1 tags,
I moved it outside. This worked well. It is possible that LO should be
able translate Figure inside the tags automatically (because of change
of language settings), but aparently this does not work (a bug?). I did
no go deeper into it, since automatic translation would not be useful
for me anyway, since the translation shoud be declinated according to
its context.

cheers
Milos

Thank you very much Milos,
That's a good workaround, I tried that, but, at least in my case, that
deletes the cross reference too... (also figure numbers loose the
reference, though they remain inside the tags)... I'd like to avoid that
if possible...

I'm going to try last libo release, to see if developers solved this bug.
Thank you! :)

if you do have string "FigureL10n X" in odt and just "X" in pdf.

Thank you Mark,
I tried but that doesn't work all the same; the problem is created when
the document is re-formatted, before exporting (or printing); infact,
having a look at the odt file after export, it's changed too (the word
"figure" has disappeared).

Thank you! :)

Rephrasing, sans puns.

Twitter is another medium that people use, to request solutions for
problems they encounter.

People are currently using Twitter as their primary support medium for
LibreOffice. A few people are responding on Twitter, to those support
requests.

What Charles would like, is for more volunteers to staff the official
LibreOffice Twitter Account.

Tech Support via Twitter left the novelty stage several years ago.
Arguably, obtaining Tech Support via Twitter is more embedded in the
mind of users, than any other support medium out there.

To quote one book I recently read: "If you don't have a Twitter Support
account, you don't offer support to your customers."

Whilst that perhaps overstates the case, people will make up hashtags,
at at-accounts, because their expectation is that both the at-account
and hashtag exist, are relevant, and monitored by the appropriate parties.
