[libreoffice-users] Need help and don't know where to even start.

2016-01-19 Thread JL
Good evening all,

I've found myself in a position where I need to drop serious weight for
health reasons. I have a diet that works (more a complete change of
eating) but I need help in the planning of it. I have used Libre Office
(and OOo before that) for years, but only for basic word processing and
*light* slideshow presentations.

I switched to the Eat to Live lifestyle last year and never felt better.
The problem is, I found myself eating out a lot (take away salads and
soups) to comply with the diet. When I bought the stuff myself I either
bought to much, or not enough. Eventually I caved into just eating what
was available.

Now that you know the backstory, what I'm trying to accomplish is this.

1. I need, using Calc, to create a calender view of the current month.

2. On each day, I need there to be about 5 dropdown menus, populated
with menu choices.

3. Once all of the week is put in (due to a lot of fresh vegetables
being in, it could be every 3 days. I'm flexible.) I need the program to
spit out a shopping list

Simplification of the above: Throughout a week, I put in some meals
that have 1/2 a cup of spinach here, 2 cups there, ect. I need the
program to spit out total cups at the end of the week. (as an added
bonus, if I can put in that X cups ='s Y lbs of a given item so that I
get weight, even better)

In regards to the above simplification, I don't just need it for
spinach. It's going to giving me a weekly shopping list of every
component in every recipe.

I hope this isn't too long winded, but I'm at my wits end just sitting
here and staring at Calc. I need to make this happen, and fairly quickly
too.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Need help and don't know where to even start.

2016-01-19 Thread Dries Feys
Hello,

Though this is possible through calc, there are probably other and
even easier options available:

the ideal on a desktop pc would be to write something in base, though
I'm not experienced with that. Perhaps there exist some web based
options as well.
Finally, there are most likely possibilies in the different app
stores, eg : http://appcrawlr.com/android-apps/best-apps-eat-and-live

Good luck with the development / searching for the tool, but most of
all : good luck with loosing weight! Try to do some sports as well :-)

I'd suggest pencil & paper or one of these smartphone apps.

[libreoffice-users] unwanted 'document recovery' dialogue (was: Re: Cannot delete horizontal red line)

Not unheard of. 8-) In fact, when closing Writer, both on Linux and

file ".~lock.CannotSelectRedLine.odt#" behind. If happens if I change
the document and then undo the changes and don't save it to disk, then
close LibreOffice Writer.

That's been happening to me ever since I moved to 5 (5.0.4.2 to be
precise). Using Mint 17. Never an issue with 4.whatever-it-was.

I use Writer, save and exit, and am occasionally immediately greeted by
the recovery dialogue followed (IIRC) by the generic LO startup window.
Anyone else noticed this? It's not repeatable to order, and is quite
unpredictable.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc- don't show the decimal point

2016-01-19 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think the first cunning answer, to multiply by 1000, then needs
Spencer's formatting in order to deal with the problem Brian
identified in his last paragraph, ie that of 123 needing to be shown
as 0123 to prevent it being mis-read or confusing.

I think that Brian was suggesting combining the "multiply by 1000"
into whatever formula creates the 4-decimal-place values in the first
place. Doing so might help by avoiding the need for a 2nd calculation
that might then need to be hidden.

The formatting Spencer drew attention to was originally suggested by
Brian but kinda got ignored in this thread because the earlier part of
his answer had been somewhat flummoxing.

Anyway, i hope you have a "good enough" result by using some of the
answers in this thread!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Base out of memory

2016-01-19 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I have just found this old thread;
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13=19016
and it might well still be very relevant.  Also this thread;
http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/msg08764.html

Err, do you know if you are using an external back-end to contain the
data? If you are not sure then you are probably using the internal
back-end so that the whole database appears to be just 1 file. Base
is much better when the tables are exported into an external back-end
that Base then just links to. The internal back-end is just to help
those who are more familiar with MS's "Access" but Base is far more
powerful, thanks to it's ability to connect with a wide variety of
external back-ends. Something small fast and powerful such as HSqlDb
might be ideal for your use-case even though it's built on Java;
http://hsqldb.org/
An ancient, heavily tweaked and very restricted form of HSqlDb was
squeezed into being the back-end for Base and there has been some work
into switching to a newer and more easily updateable internal back-end
but i am not sure about the progress. Anyway the proper full releases
of HSqlDb perform much better than the internal version.

Sorry i am not being very helpful here! Hopefully someone with a lot
more understanding and/or knowledge will appear or someone give some
other ideas worth trying.

Regards from
Tom :)

The message points to a lack of assigned memory for the Java VM process
that launches the Base-hdslqdb combination. Could it be that the
machines in question are using multiple other Java threads or apps and
there is not enough memory left to allocate to the opened ODB Java
hsqldb instance ?

If you want to increase the allocated Java resources for an ODB file,
you have to extract it, and go and tweak one of the database specific
configuration files contained therein (unfortunately, can't remember
which one, possibly SCRIPT.

The message could also be completely erroneous or misleading, such
things have already happened in LibreOffice, but then finding out what
really is the problem will be more difficult.

The error comes up before you have really had a chance to enter any data
If you enter the first row and then start entering data in the second row the
error pops as soon as the cursor goes to the first field in the second row.

Even simpler, why not construct your spreadsheet so that it handles
the numbers you really want instead of those that you don't? Change
your formulae - surely a simple task? - to calculate with up-to-
four-digit integers instead of the fractional ones you have. You will
find the number 1 helpful. You can easily *think* 0.1234 when you
read "1234" in a cell.

You will want to format the cells as "" so that what you think of
as 0.0123 will appear as "0123" and not "123".

I trust this helps.

[libreoffice-users] Cannot delete horizontal red line

2016-01-19 Thread R. Diez

Hi all:

I managed to add an horizontal red line to my document's footer that I
cannot delete anymore. I just cannot select it with the mouse.

Please find attached the document. I stripped all contents down to a
couple of text lines.

Could that be a bug in LibreOffice? I am using the latest version 5.0.4.2.

Thanks,
  rdiez

That's perfect.

Brian, I'm not smart.

Attached files are generally removed by the mailing list processor
before messages are distributed, so no-one will have been able to see
your document.

One possibility is that you have added a top or bottom border to a
paragraph. This will remain even if you remove the text of the paragraph.

o Put the cursor in the preceding or following paragraph.
o Go to right-click | Paragraph... or right-click | Edit Paragraph
Style... . (The problem could be in either place.)

o On the Borders tab, adjust "Line arrangement" to show no borders.

Could that be a bug in LibreOffice?

Possibly not.

I trust this helps.

I'm not sure if you are being serious, but it's not a question of
being smart or not - so I don't accept that you are not. It's very
easy to miss ideas that may happen to occur to others.

OK, thanks. It is a shame that I cannot send even a tiny example
document. I am attaching it again, so that at least you get it.

I drew the line manually using Insert, Shapes, Line.

I double-checked anyway, and all places I could find following your
instructions are set to "Set no borders".

Not unheard of. 8-) In fact, when closing Writer, both on Linux and
Windows, I often get a "LibreOffice Document Recovery" dialog. "Due to
an unexpected error, LibreOffice crashed.". "The following files will be
recovered", and then an empty list of files. If then leaves the lock
file ".~lock.CannotSelectRedLine.odt#" behind. If happens if I change
the document and then undo the changes and don't save it to disk, then
close LibreOffice Writer.

This is a very small document, on a rather clean Ubuntu 14.04.3, and a
Windows 7 PC. All other software is pretty stable.

But the problem with the red line is what bothers me most at this point
in time.

Thanks,
  rdiez

You need Format > Cells > Numbers: Format code =

With this, 0.1 appears as "" and 0.6 as "0001".

For more on this, see
"https://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Number_Format_Codes;, which I found
searching for "libreoffice calc display fractions without decimal point".

I agree with Brian: The foremost experts in any field may not be able
to solve problems that "lesser" minds handle easily. That's why a
second opinion in medicine (or anything else) can be useful.

[libreoffice-users] R1C1 reference style with LibreOffice

2016-01-19 Thread pacopyc pacopyc
Hi, I have to convert a macro from Excel to LibreOffice. The Excel macro
contains many formulas in R1C1 reference style.

How can I rewrite the formulas in R1C1 reference style with LibreOffice? Is
it possible?

Thanks
