[libreoffice-users] Re: Selection List editing --SOLVED

2013-01-17 Thread JeepNut
Mr. Quadri guessed exactly what I was meaning as well as having the
correct solution to my particular issue.
Gracious thanks also to Mr. Barker for clarifying that "selection list"
will mean something different in different circumstances and explaining
the differences.
I was refering to his first scenario wherein one right clicks on a cell,
and a context menu is presented with "selection list" at the bottom.
I only needed to edit the document to eliminate the unwanted items in
that list.

Thanks very much to all of you for being available and sharing your
wealth of knowledge and varying viewpoints.

[libreoffice-users] Selection List editing

2013-01-16 Thread JeepNut
Have looked for an hour online and in the help texts trying to figure
out how to edit what I see in the Selection List when I right click on a
cell in Calc and get the pulldown list.
I've been through the data validity drill but see nothing in the "list"
there.
And I've gone through the autocorrect options with no help. I don't see
any of the text that is in my "selection list" displayed in the
Autocorrect options at all.
I found the files in the users .config directory but they don't appear
to be editable via text tools.

[libreoffice-users] Re: graphic doesn't print the outlines

2012-04-30 Thread JeepNut
Linux 3.1.10-1.9-desktop x86_64
System: openSUSE 12.1 (x86_64)
KDE: 4.7.2 (4.7.2) "release 5"
LibreOffice: 3.4.5 OOO340m1 (Build:1505)
Printing to: Epson CX9400 FAX/Scan/Print/Copy device attached to my wife's
12.1 box in the other room (via Samba)
Driver: Epson Stylus CX9400F - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.7 (color, 2-sided
printing)

Haven't had time to read through the wiki although I did read several topics
of the help files, which didn't seem to answer the question about why the
border layer doesn't print when all layers are enabled. But I'm also quite
a newbie to creating a "layered" document. I most commonly only use word
processing or spreadsheeting functions.

In any case, I eventually got the result I wanted, but it takes 2 passes
through the printer to do it.
I first *disable* printing of the "border layer" and print the document with
all other layers enabled.
Then I put the sheet back in the printer and print with the border layer now
enabled and the Color Bar and Text layers *disabled*. There's more than one
way to skin a cat as they say...kinda gruesome but it seems a well
recognized phrase.

When looking at the "print preview" with all layers enabled it all looks
fine. But it sure wouldn't print those borders for some reason. I did try
"arranging" the various parts of the image. Bring to front, move to back,
etc. but it seemed to have no effect on the output.

[libreoffice-users] graphic doesn't print the outlines

2012-04-26 Thread JeepNut

Hi all.
I used Writer to design a silly little simple "label" with a couple of
small images and some text.
I selected all of the image components (not "grouped") and chose to set
the Line / Continuous / 0.02. THEN I individually selected the images
and text boxes and set "Lines - Invisible"
So I don't want any lines in the middle but want the label to print with
a clear outer border.

I reproduced that 8 times on the page. It looks fine in the print preview.
But when printed, there is no outer border shown on the labels.

Any hints?
Thanks!

[libreoffice-users] Help w Spreadsheet function?

2011-09-11 Thread JeepNut

Hi all.
I want to make a spreadsheet that has a cell that has a little pulldown
list arrow on the side of the cell, so that when you click the arrow,
you see a list of things you can choose that populates the cell.

I'm not a "strong" spreadsheet user, so when I'm looking at the help
file I'm not sure what all the references are to this form and that data
filter, etc. It's all very confusing when you don't really know what
they are referencing.

I've been poking around using this example I have for instance of a
checkbook regsiter type of spreadsheet.
There is one page of the spreadsheet for "catagories" for instance which
is just a list of "catagories" like Food, Clothing, etc.
Then on the MAIN spreadsheet page in the cell you just click the button
and pick the catagory.
But I don't see any "formulas" that I can copy that make this happen in
the one I'm trying to build.

Anyone care to teach?

Thanks!
Steve

This looked to be a great suggestion but before going down that road (I was
still reviewing posts in search of similar issues) I found a few suggestions
that I THINK have solved the problem. I've done some heavy editing and
played with some files and have had no further issues so I'm calling my
problem solved at this point.

I changed a couple of things but if I were to wager I'd say it was this that
fixed it:
1. Under LibreOffice -Java I verified that I have actually *marked* the
Java run-time environment that I want being used. Currently that is
1.6.0_26 but neither that one NOR 1.6.0_22 that is also shown were actually
"enabled". Also verified that there is no Openjdk listed there. Apparently
some have problems with that. Both of mine actually are Sun versions.
I also did these two things:
2. Disabled Enable experimental (unstable) features. No idea why I had
that enabled.
3. Enabled Open/Save Dialogs option to Use LibreOffice dialogs. I've
read that this not being selected may cause issues with the SaveAs option
according to reading.

So for now she seems to be running stable and I've not had the ap crash NOR
have I had the system lock up or freeze, or do anything weird at all since
changing those things.

Once again, this forum has helped resolve something that's been nagging me
for MONTHS.
This is me now!
Many thanks to those who contribute and keep the knowledge flowing.

[libreoffice-users] Re: help recovering?

2011-07-29 Thread JeepNut
Because I really like closure, thought I would post the resolution to the
problem of the file I lost.
Admittedly a fairly unsophisticated user of the office suite, I overlooked a
very easy answer to the problem of recovering the file that crashed and
ended up being completely empty

Find the backup copy.

I didn't even realize one existed! But after continuing to review posts in
this excellent forum and getting a few ideas here and there about how to
stabilize my also-frequently-crashing office suite, I became aware of the
option in the Tools / Options menu that allows for a backup copy to be
saved. Once I found the Paths option and located the hidden subfolders
where backups and various other LibreOffice system files are saved, I
discovered (to my great joy!) the most recent backed up copy of that trashed
file!

I thank all the folks that attempted to recover the document and offered
suggestions.
But in this case, the simplest answer of all seems to have been just
overlooked by everyone.
It's a complex set of tools and software, so it's not surprising that there
is a lot to learn if one wants to become a proficient user. The experience
and subsequent follow-up has taught me a lot.

I just really appreciate the hard work and dedication of the entire team of
folks who have made this open source solution even POSSIBLE and I thank you
all for your continued efforts at improving it.

Overall satisfactory and very beneficial results have been achieved.

[libreoffice-users] Frequent crashing

2011-07-27 Thread JeepNut
Have been having significant trouble keeping LibreOffice Writer running.
Lost a pretty important file recently and some helpful soul had suggested
there should be some sort of logs being generated during these events.
I'm one of those users who knows enough to make him dangerous, HOWEVER, I
think I have found the log files being generated when this puppy gags.
There are several of these all during the time frame that the software kept
crashing on me the other night. These files are all similar if not exactly
the same and seem to be giving me the idea that the problem is related to
Java. I'm not sure just how Java is related to the LO suite, but the well
of what I don't know is a deep one.

I'm going to make an attempt here at attaching the file for review by anyone
who might be able to help.
Thanks!

Thank you very much for the confirmation Dennis, however unfortunate.
I do appreciate the work you did to help.

I guess my next problem to solve is... why did this happen?
It seems a tough nut to crack.
There are obviously bugs in any software.
However, there may well also be a hardware issue involved here.
I'll start a different thread to see if there can be help resolving that
dilemma.

There is no recoverable information of any value whatsoever in the file.

Oh wait,

I have a bad feeling about this.

You don't still have the Kwrite file? You took the Kwrite file into
LibreOffice and started to edit it? Did it ever get save as a different file,
or did you save it atop the Kwrite file, with the original no-file-extension
name?

I'd like to see that too.

The list won't transfer attachments. But you can send it as an attachment to
me directly. I am very curious what beast that is.

Here is the file. Was saved as a common text file originally with

Subsequently I got more complex with it and started edit it in

Try

or

if it does - you will have to copy& paste back into LO again

you might have to google a few more until you find one that works.

Officeviewers seems "Windows" related, no such stuff on my systems here.
I've declared it illegal to have in my home.
Didn't have any luck w/ visioo-writer. Could not make it compile.
But I apprecate the idea.

[libreoffice-users] Re: help recovering?

2011-07-23 Thread JeepNut
Thanks Tom. I understand and that's part of the mystery here. The longer
story is that I've been having problems with the system "spontaneously
resetting" or just freezing up like this for several months. At first, like
many, I cried to myself in my personal system log about the upgrade to 11.3
being the problem, then about KDE being the problem, then about LibreOffice
being the problem, but started to finally realize it cannot be that all the
software suddenly became "buggy". I kind of have to do that. I log my
gripes rather than take them to a forum. After I've read and re-read my
inane whining, I come to other conclusions.

One of them was the perhaps a memory had failed.
So I bought 2 new sticks about a month ago.
Problems with Firefox have disappeared, it no longer crashes constantly and
the same for several other "unstable" apps I had trouble with. Big
improvement, but I still have trouble keeping specifically LibreOffice
running for some reason and still have this freezing of the machine.
Although the spontaneous reboots have not recurred.

So I am intrigued with the idea that maybe the video card causes this.
I'm going to pull the box open and try reseating it and see what happens
afterward. Of course to know if that works will take some time. And it
won't fix the immediate issue with this specific file, but maybe no further
problems afterward.
I haven't had luck with it so I'll send that along to you off list and hope
for the best.

BTW the cautions you give are well taken. But I'm an intermediate level hack
w/ the PC. Been a PC hardware/software junkie since Kaypro 486 days and DOS
2.2. But that was before I saw the light and jumped on the Linux wagon.
I've built several PC's over the years, this PC from scratch about 4 or 5
years ago and it's been very reliable and worked great until just recently.
The graphics card in this one is XFX GEForce 6800 GS 256Mb and isn't very
old. Maybe one year or less.
I keep the dust off things internally about 2 or 3 times a year as the PC is
in a clear arcylic case so it's easy to see when she's dirtied up. So the
card fan can be observed functional and not terribly dusty at this time but
it may benefit from being reseated. I'll do that and see what happens going
forward.
Thanks for that suggestion.

Open it with archive manager and see if there is any info in
content.xml. Any surviable text should be in that file.

BTW: Do you by chance have an intel graphics card in your system?

Nope. XFX GEForce 6800 GS 256Mb,

odt files are zip archives. Changing the extension to txt is almost
guaranteed to get you nowhere. If you make a copy and change the
extension to .zip, and if you succeed in unzipping it, you will find
interesting things in there.

The file Content.xml contains your text with xml stuff, but if you work
at it you may be able to extract your data. There may be extractor
programs that will do this for you.

The downside in all this is that if the odt file is damaged, the zip
archiver may not be able to open it.

David Teague

Thaks David / Jay,
Indeed the .txt file test yields no help, just gibberish with no
intellegible text.
.zip extenstion shows nothing but a blank when I try to open that with Ark.
Content.xml file? ... isn't this "windows" related? I did a search on the
file and there don't appear to be any file called that on the system.

I do appreciate the effort at help though...

[libreoffice-users] help recovering?

2011-07-22 Thread JeepNut
Hoping for some good news here.
Am using the openSuSE branded version of LibreOffice 3.3.3 OOO330m19
(Build:301) tag libreoffice-3.3.3.1 on openSuSE 11.3 and KDE 4.4.4-1.5.

Was editing a document that is pretty important (to me at least) and during
the process had tried to add a footnote.
I was editing the text in the footnote and almost immediately there was some
flashing of the screen and LibreOffice crashed, locking up the entire PC.
No mouse control, no keyboard control, nothing.
So I had to "reset" the PC.
Now the document is fubar. When I try to open it, LibreOffice attempts to
recover but fails.
Then it tries to repair the file but opens only a blank page.
I've tried to open it without an extension and get a list of a variety of
application types to attempt any modicum of recovery, but no matter what I
try to open it with it either fails, or opens in a file of unreadable
gibberish.
I'd be THRILLED if someone would be able to actually recover this document
for me.
Nothing secret in it, I'd be happy to email it to anyone who'd like to give
it a try. Even just to get back the text out of it so that I could rebuild
would be fabulous.

Any chance at all to recover?
