[libreoffice-users] FIPS 140-2 support with password-protected docs

2019-01-03 Thread Sean
Hi, I just joined the list. I'm a Linux system admin with (among
other things) about 20 CentOS 7.6 desktops under my wing. Yesterday I
posted a question to the ASK site [1], because one of my users had
issues with password-protected docs after getting his new laptop. I
now have confirmed that this issue is related to our desktops being
FIPS enabled ( kernel/grub2 with fips=1 ).

I joined the list to further this discussion and determine if I should
file a bug report or what. The gist of the problem is that when FIPS
is enabled, a user can encrypt a document, but not decrypt the
document, and LO reports that the password provided was incorrect. I
am not very technical with how LO does password protection, but this
seems like an bug. FIPS causes the system to disable non-compliant
ciphers and algorithms, but I'm guessing that there is some piece of
code that's calling a non-compliant function only on decrypt, and not
on encrypt...or (less likely) the encrypt side isn't throwing an error
when it should.

Would this be the right place to hold such a discussion?

By design, a Page Style will normally affect the entire document. If
you want to have different parts of the document use different Page
Styles, I would suggest that you create Sections. Each section can
have its own Page Style.

appendix : no header

So I've modified the "first page" style for headers and footers. Set Next
style as "default style"

Modified default style for headers, Next style is default style.

next created page style appendix, no headers or footers. Set next style as
"appendix"

I write the 3-4 page letter. Get to signatures, and insert a manual page
break. On the new page I double click appendix page style.

That changes the page style for ALL the pages to "appendix".

What am I doing wrong?

OK, I'll try to learn Sections, but from the description it's not
designed for this.

OTOH, Page Styles seems to be what I need:

From: https://help.libreoffice.org/Writer/Creating_and_Applying_Page_Styles:

To apply the custom page style to more than one page, select its name in
the Next Style box. To stop using the style, insert a manual page break and
assign it a different page style.

I just can't seem to make it work. I can't be the only person who uses
different Page Styles in the same document.

And yes: I've also been hit by misconfigured reply!

[libreoffice-users] Referencing slides from external impress presentation (Menu Insert -> File, selecting link), no visual clue?

2012-06-28 Thread Sean Carlos
I have several slides which I include in multiple presentations, such
as a contact details slide.

Impress offers a way to include a slide from a separate odp
presentation, using the menu option Insert -> File. Choosing the
"Link" option during the slide importation allows you to update the
included slide should the original slide have undergone changes. Very
nice.

There appears to be a problem with the implementation, however. There
doesn't seem to be any way to visually know that a slide depends on
(is linked to) an external "master" slide. So a user could / will
unknowing make changes to a slide and then proceed to overwrite these
changes the next time they open the impress slide set accepting the
"update linked slides" prompt. Not good for data integrity.

I searched the bug tracker using the keywords "impress import file
link" but didn't find any reference to this issue. I'd like to log an
enhancement request to ask for a visual clue that a slide is linked to
an external slide (I suspect that implementation cannot be too
difficult) but I thought I'd check with other users before I do so.
Feedback welcome!

- Sean
