[libreoffice-users] need help off this list - need Linux package choice help

2016-10-24 Thread tonybsa
Hi Tim

There is a very comprehensive Video editor for Linux called OpenShot 2.0.
Runs well on Ubuntu 16.04. (Not sure about previous ubuntu systems, but am
pretty sure will run on 14.04 plus).

The program is a Kickstarter success.

OpenShot Video Editor is a free, open-source video editor for Linux licensed
under the GPL version 3.0.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Compatibility of LO Base with Access databases

2016-08-02 Thread tonybsa
In defence of LibreOffice Base.
Unlike Ian I have had very good results with Base.

Over the last 8 years I have used Base as a a "front end" to a MySQL database
in 5 different countries for different projects.

One database was for the New Ireland (PNG) Provincial Government Old Age &
Disabled Pension fund. 170,000 records updated and maintained by two dedicated
data entry people, but accessed by approximately 35 other users. LibreOffice
Base on Windows 10, 8 and XP PC, on Ubuntu 12.04 PC, on Macintosh OS X laptop.
All connecting via ethernet and wireless to a Ubuntu 12.04 Server.

Another similar situation with Ministry of Tourism, Tonga collecting data on
visitors to Tonga and also used for tourism venture's licensing and
administration and conventions. 25 users connecting LibreOffice Base to MySQL
on FreeBSD server, with Windows and Ubuntu PCs.

Full administration for 5 divisions in Sanma Provincial Council, Santo,
Vanuatu. Including HR, Accounts, Youth, Disabilities, Planning, etc. 75 staff
members, plus external users, with LibreOffice Base connecting to MySQL on
Ubuntu 14.04 server from Windows (10, 8.1, XP), Ubuntu 12.04 and Macintosh PCs.

Now I used Access (Base not available) at Kokopo Business College for student
records. Created a database for College Library with Base on Ubuntu PCs
connecting to central MySQL database via Fibre Optics.

Had real trouble trying to set this up with Access for multiple users (25
teachers, 10 admin staff).
When I got LibreOffice Base I had similar problems with using the HSQLDB engine.

I found that connecting Base to MySQL was very easy and I had real problems
trying to connect Access.
I could also use Base on Linux machines and update all my colleagues to a
consistent operating system.

You can not export Access forms, reports, macros, etc to use with Base but you
can export all the data from Access and import it into Base very easily.

Sorry to keep on!!! I have had good results with LibreOffice Base connecting to
an external database. I also make extensive use of Macros with Base.

Just in case you are wondering -- I am retired and about to have my 75th
birthday so not just straight out of Uni.!!!

Thanks for listening

This is incorrect -- Sorry had a slip of the brain or copy / paste !!!

Front page is one of the worst programs for creating Web pages (HTML). Even
"Dreamweaver" used to have a menu option called "clean up Front page".

My recommendations, amongst the many, many web development programs available,
is "Bluefish", open source, runs on Linux, Windows, OS X, etc.

So Microsoft Front page; Bluefish

Who decides on all the unnecessary idiotic changes for no apparent good reason?

Adding new options can be put into any menu / sub-menu that the development
team thinks is appropriate, but moving existing options from one place to
another is VERY counter productive. Not to say annoying.

Set B2 to B17 to your list
Then set A2 to A17 to your required order. Note in column A you are telling
the numbers in column B where they should appear in the sorted list i.e Number
16 (sixteen) in column B should end up as number 2 in the sorted list.
Select A2 to A17 and do a sort.
When asked if you want to extend the sort click "Extend"

A2 to A17B2 to B17 before sort B2 to B17

This particular change from F4 to Ctrl-Shift_F4 for data source in Calc but not
in Writer is a massive problem. The F4 shortcut has been around for YEARS.

I now have to re-write my tutorials and workshop examples.
I now have to go back to the hundreds of users that have been using F4 for
YEARS and try to explain why there is a difference between Calc & Writer.

A large number of the people (I have trained ) that use LibreOffice use F4 for
mail merge in Writer and Pivot Tables in Calc.
Because the usual source is a MySQL database where data is being updated on a
regular basis, the mail merge and pivot tables need updating regularly.

Why was this change made?
As far as I can see (from the bugzilla history) it was requested in 2013
because 1 or 2 people, that are changing from Lotus 123 to Calc could not make
the change from F4 to Shift-F4 for the "Absolute cell reference shortcut".

I don't remember any of "my" users having ever found it necessary to change the
cell reference from absolute to relative once they have formatted a cell.

So I agree with James Lang & Alexander Thurgood when they decry this change.
Who made the change 2 years after it was requested, without discussing it with
the people on this list?

Developers, please do NOT make changes to existing menu options and shortcuts
without FULLY consulting the "professional" users of LibreOffice.
Thank you.

Yep, they were still using slide rules when I joined the Royal Navy in 1959 (No
that is not a mistake!)

The first computers I wrote about, as a technical author in 1969, was the
Energy Management Analogue Computer (EMAC) and the Crosswind Control
Computer for the USAF -- C5A Galaxy aircraft. Followed by computers for
Concorde with the English-French Consortium.

Analogue computers (which people dispute were computers) did not use any
software, so if you wished to change a parameter you probably needed to replace
a couple of resistors and capacitors, change the input to a feedback loop, etc.
These computers had the equivalent of For and While loops, maths functions,
such as X + Y (through AND gates). Most operations, including the mechanical
read-out updates were done by triggering a transistor -- hence we got the 0
or 1 output.

Been working with software since -- still creating databases using LibreOffice
Base connected to MySQL servers, creating WEB sites using HTML5, etc.

Not sure when this retirement thing is supposed to take place ;-)

By the way I am a Pom, but have been living in New Zealand for the past 43

Use Edit Fill Series

Click in cell A2
Right click Format Cells date Fri, 31Dec 99 OK
With A2 still selected shift click A6
Click EditFillSeries
When the dialog box opens
Select Down Date Day
Enter start date: 3/08/2015
Enter finish date: 7/08/2015
Increment: 1
Click OK

Result:
Mon, 3 Aug 15
Tue, 4 Aug 15
Wed, 5 Aug 15
Thu, 6 Aug 15
Fri, 7 Aug 15

The secret i using the Edit Fill Series menu options

So now you have the dates, with days in the A column you could put time along
the the row 1.
Starting at B1 and use the Edit Fill Series Right Date . Start 08:00,
End 12:00 Increment 1:00.
Just ensure that the Cell Format for the Row is set to Time rather than Date.

Hope this helps.

I came into this world with nothing.
Fortunately I have got most of it left.

You do not select the cells from an open query.
Just select the query in the Query panel i.e the actual name of the query and

Then paste that into your spreadsheet and all your data should be imported.

So don't open the query just copy the query name.

I would suggest option 2.

Sorry about the long post, but I hope this helps.

Login to MySQL as normal
In MySQL create an EMPTY database mysql create database newname ; or reuse
your old database name.
Quit MySQL \q

Take your CSV file and open it in LibreOffice calc.
Save the spreadsheet

Open new database in LibreOffice Base

Select connect to an Existing Database
Select MySQL
on the next screen
Select the driver (I use JDBC)
on the next screen
Enter the name of the database you created in MySQL
Enter the server, probably Localhost or 127.0.0.1
Accept the default Port
on the next screen
Enter your MySQL logon name
Tick Password required
on the Final screen
Select Yes register the database
Click Finish

Now LibreOffice will ask for a new database name -- this is the name of the
Base Front End you will be using to connect to the MySQL server (it is NOT a
database!).
When LibreOffice creates the new front end it should open with a blank set of
tasks.
Open the spreadsheet you created earlier.
Select ALL the data including column headings
Copy this data
Go to your front end
Make sure that Tables are selected in the list of tasks
Click in the blank area below the Options panel
Paste your data!!
LibreOffice will ask you to confirm that you want to add the definition data,
and that the first row is column headings
Click OK
On the next screen you need to select the columns (or fields) that you want to
import. Just select all.
Click Create
LibreOffice should, all being well, create a new table with all your data in
the correct columns.
You may be asked if you want to add a primary key. I suggest that you say yes.
You can always change this later but it saves problems when inserting a pasted
set of data.

You should now have a new database with all your original data as previously.
You may have to do some tidying up if the data types did not import
correctly, such as Dates.

Sorry about the long post, but I hope this helps.

 dltest /usr/local/lib/libsqlite3odbc.so SQLConnect

Good to know that there is a solution.
Perhaps the documentation team can find time to add this information to the
Base User Guide or Help or somewhere.

Yes I was aware of this but thought that just maybe the oracle drivers would
work for you.
Sorry all out of other suggestions.

What am I doing incorrectly here?

You may need to go to LibreOffice Tools Options LibreOffice Base
Connections and select the ODBC Driver, under the Connection Pool dialogue.
Select the driver and click the Enable pooling for this driver checkbox.

This MAY solve the problem. No promises!

information. What are the effects of registering and not registering the
 database with Base?
It is a good idea to register the database as then the data is accessible to
the Writer and Calc programs under View Data Source

The DATABASE terminology confusion
The problem is the Database terminology. Unfortunately there are two times
the word Database gets used, once when you create a database such as SQLlite or
MySQL, etc. and once when you create a 'front end to your database.

LibreOffice Base can be a database!! but in your case the database is SQLlite
and the LibreOffice Base is just a way of working with the data from the
SQLlite database.
When you save the newly created connection to the database by giving your Base
file a name you are in fact creating the front end, NOT a database!!
So once you save this front end file and open it you will find all your
SQLlite tables, views, procedures, etc. displayed in the front end and you can
then edit or work with the data in the SQLlite database.
If your connection to the database is good you can now control the input and
extracion of data using your Base front end.

Hope this all makes sense?
SO go ahead register your database (which in fact is registering the Base
front end) and when asked to save the new file you can give it any name you
like as you are saving the front end to your PC.

For instance I have a real database on a MySQL server called sanmadb , the
front end (in Base) on my laptop is called Sanma Central Database.
The accountants base front end is called Sanma Finances but both front ends
connect and get their data from the same MySQL database (sanmadb).
