You might also want to look for existing bugs in the freedesktop
bugzilla, I seem to recall this is a known issue with self-signed
certificates.

Only one bug filed regarding digital signatures & that is for a smart card:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31359
[ Problem to sign documents with smart card]
So I'd recommend filing a bug report.

Should have checked for an update before posting, however, now upgraded to
3.3.1, digital signature function is still not working.
