Hello Alex. Thanks your response. I'm using 3.5.4 from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS software library. Right now, the only workaround I've found is to create view from the query, then use that for the report. However, I'm going to assume you've gotten 3.7 from the LO website. I'll uninstall my 3.5.4 and d/l from the LO site. Do you think I'll have any problem using the DB with the newer version? No, I have been using 3.6.4.3 for Base working with tables, queries, forms, and reports without any problems. This is true for both 32 and 64 bit versions. The following I have done on a 32 bit laptop. (I also have a tower that is 64 bit. All LO software on it comes from the LO website.) I use LO 3.6.4.3 from the LO site and have no problems with Base. LO 3.7 has been changed to LO 4.0.0, and this is almost but not quite ready to be used for everyday use. If I were you, I would download the version I use: 3.6.4.3. Until today, I had been using 3.5.4 from Ubuntu 12.04 to connect to MySQL. I used this to access the data from tables and run queries. I did not do any work with reports. But after reading your emails about problems with reports, I tried to create a report from a query. The wizard would not even open. So, I have removed it. Recently, I have been able to use a different driver to connect to MySQL, so I have not learned anything. If you are going to uninstall your 3.5.4 version, use synaptic to do so. Search for libreoffice and remove anything that is listed in the Installed Version column and begins with 1:3.5.4-0Ubuntu. If you want some suggestions as to how to install LO 3.6.4.3 from the LO site, let me know. --Dan -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Urgent Base problem
Hi :) No. Err i am not sure where to start as there is so much wrong with Brian's last post. 1. People are not dim just because they are not as skilled with computers as you. People may be exceptionally gifted, perhaps even a genius at many things but still not understand the one area of knowledge you think of as the most important. 2. There are some people in the world that have machines with Windows installed where it wasn't me that did the install! I know that might be difficult to believe! lol. Lately i have bumped into or tried sharing files with quite a few people that can't open zip files. A couple of times i have been allowed to look at the machine in question and seen that the only problem is that somehow file associations have vanished or perhaps were never set-up right. This happens so often that i didn't even know there is some default app in Xp but there are a lot of simple archive managers to choose from and installing one is a quickeasy way to grab all the relevant file-types so that they can all be opened. I have even seen a couple of machines that couldn't even read gifs despite having several MS programs for viewing pictures. Again a pre-existing condition of particular logins on a couple of machines. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Urgent Base problem
Hi :) If the Form is based on a Query then it's fairly easy to sort the Query. In the Query just put the Surname column first and the First name after it. Then just set each column to sort in ascending order. If the Form is based straight off a Table instead then there is probably some way of doing it but it's likely to be a bit less transparent. I don't know how to re-base a Form off a Query instead of a Table but i think that is the direction i would go in, in order to increase flexibility and transparency in the future. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Urgent Base problem
Hi :) Side-issue = Zip To open a zip-file on Windows you need to have something like WinZip, WinRar, File-roller or something else similar. GnuLinux usually has a default one but again there are other choices. There are also programs that can fix some errors with slightly broken zip-files. Are you able to right-click on ormal files or folders and see an option to Compress file/folder? Also do you have trouble with other zip files? Side-issue = Java Java mostly works just fine. If it ain't broke then don't fix it. It might be interesting to experiment with using another version of java just to see if it does make things a bit faster and smoother. For older versions of LibreOffice the 1.6u21 (there might be a .0 missing in there) was apparently the best one if people were having slow-downs and crashes caused by java. For LO 3.5.x branch the 1.7 seems to be best and 3.4.5 has allegedly been updated to allow it to use the 1.7 too. However, as before, if java is working fine then it's probably best to avoid messing around with it! Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Urgent Base problem (stability in long term use)
Interesting to know! For my part, by precaution, all my data are kept in separate dbf tables, linked to an odb file. Why do I use dbf? Standard format making it portable to all softs, notably GIS softwares. Old archives can also be read even if you changed your soft. There is not much information on long term use of databases, let's say more than 10 years (e.g.: keeping adresses or bibliographic data). The file can get corrupt. But worser, some data inside the file can get corrupt, without changing the structure of the dbf file, and you just notice it when you query these data. I heard once that MS-access is not stable enough in long term use. And, sometimes, odb file can get problems (for ex. shutdown of windows while some forms are open in the odb file). But, when the tables are kept in separate files, recovery is easy, using a backup copy of the odb file. Using LibreOffice 3.3.2 on windows Vista. NB: I came to openoffice several years ago mainly because of its good integration with databases (standalone use). I wonder if my way of using Base is optimal, trying to find the way among the many possibilities offered by Base and Calc. On my Linux laptop I run the exact same Java software in cached mode, just like the embedded one but as an independent process with database files outside the Base document. The embedded HSQLDB works like an extension. Every time you access the package data, the database gets installed to office temp. When you close the last connection to the installed database, the database is repackaged into the .odb document. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Urgent Base problem
Hi :) I think the point Mark was making was to switch away from using the embedded back-end to pretty much any external one. Which is what you often suggest too. Replacing one excellent databse engine with another excellent (much bigger) database engine will not solve any problem. I run a HSQLDB server and it is the most reliable and fast little software on that Windows machine.
