Purge removes not only what is being requested, but also programs that
depend on it, and, in some instances, things that the program depends upon.

Remove just gets rid of what is requested.

By way of example.
The only house at the end of a cul de sac.

Remove the house will simply tear down the house, leaving a vacant lot,
but with the infrastructure for utilities, etc in place.

Purge the house will remove the house, the utility poles, the utility
lines (sewerage, water), power, telephone, cable, and all the other
infrastructure along the cul-de-sac. In the "best/worst case scenario",
purge would remove the entire cul de sac, leaving no evidence that there
ever was a road there, much less a house.

Well, I was told to use Remove instead of Purge a few years ago. That

Do you really want to Purge it?
How about all of the settings and options you have in the old version
that you want in the new one?

sudo apt-get remove libreoffice*

Then I install the new version by installing the web site version, after
it is uncompressed, in the terminal.
I "cd" to the DEBS folder and then use the "dpkg" command.

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

I tend not to use the PPA system, since I install and use different
versions on my various Ubuntu/MATE and Mint/MATE systems [Mint 13.x to
Ubuntu 15.04] - as well as my Win7 systems.

Thomas, my experience with downloading newer versions of LibreOffice on
Linux Mint accords with yours, i e, the new version is installed *alongside*
the older one. The latter is easy to remove, both via Synaptic and from the
menu. As others have mentioned, installing the LibreOffice PPA is one way
of making certain that one always has the latest stable version ; I use it
myself. Why you can't get extensions to work on the new version is,
however, beyond me ; perhaps someone else who frequents our forum knows

Here it might be worth noting that the latest version of Linux Mint, 17.2
Rafael, has now been released with a mechanism that allows for an upgrade
to be done directly from the Update Manager ; I did this last night and it
took all of 2-3 minutes. The version of LibreOffice that comes with LM 17.2
is 4.4.3

How did you do that?

If you'd added the PPA deb
http://ppa.launchpad.net/libreoffice/ppa/ubuntu trusty main all you
would have had to do is an upgrade.

In a terminal do
sudo apt-get purge libreoffice*

That should remove all your versions of LO.
Then see here for how to install via PPA:
http://linuxpitstop.com/upgrade-libreoffice-4-4-4-on-ubuntu/

As you will have removed ALL your versions of LO then you will have to
edit the final command to

sudo apt-get install libreoffice

To have the latest version I recommend remove installed versions, add
PPA repositories and install from there.

[libreoffice-users] remove older version

2015-07-04 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz
Good evening

I made a fresh install of Mint 17.1, 64-bit on a Dell Optiplex 745 machine.
Mint comes with LibreOffice 4.2.6.3.
Since there is a newer version (4.4.4.3) available, I downloaded and
installed it.
However, I now have under (Mint) Menu -> Office TWO Libreoffice items
each (Writer, Calc etc.).
In the newer version I am not able to modify / install an extensions.
I get errors like:

"Error while installing extension Alternative searching. The error
message is: an error occurred during file opening
The extension will not be installed."

"Error reading data from the Internet.
Server error message: Could not read status line: Connection reset by peer."

"General Internet error has occurred."

Somehow I suspect, the old package gets in the way (this kind of trouble
with extensions has NEVER happened
on any computer with ANY OS before) and I would like to remove it ...
but don't know how.
Software Manager and Synaptic Package Manger show only ONE version of
LibreOffice: 4.4.4.3.

Is there a trick to do this?
What are the chances this will solve the extension problem?
I am also wondering why the newer version did not replace the older one.

Thank you.
Thomas
