With your suggestion the text does not dance, and that is already a
considerable improvement. Unfortunately, only a couple of the icons in the
table toolbar show, so the advantage of having it open all the time is
largely lost. I've placed a graphic of the toolbars in my DropBox.
 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1181912/toolbar.PNG
You can see that there is not enough visible for use.

If you don't mind losing another toolbar's size space, you can take
your Find toolbar and the Table toolbar and move them onto a new line
of toolbars. (Click on the Find toolbar's left end and move it down
to half-way between the two toolbars you already have and that should
open a new, third toolbar between the existing two. Then move the
Table toolbar down to join it.)

Have you tried this? If not, try it and see what happens. The bar still
pops in and out and disturbs the text. There is evidently no workaround
and the OOo and LO developers have been ignoring complaints for years.
Rick

Hi :)
Don't be so 'hasty' to dismiss the LO devs. They have fixed a LOT of bugs that
have been around in OpenOffice for years but obviously there is always more to
do. A new bug-report about this might not get to the top of their priority
list
straight-away but we can hope for better results with LO than OOo.
Regards from
Tom :)

I opened a LO Writer window, moved the Find toolbar to a new toolbar
line between the two default toolbars, created a table, docked the
table toolbar next to the Find toolbar and then moved the cursor in
and out of the table. The Table toolbar appeared and reappeared in
the same place without disturbing the content of the page panel.

 Hi :)

I think that the View menu on the menu bar might help ...

 View - Toolbars - Table

Then you might want to push the table toolbar to the side rather than have it
 vertical rather than horizontal.

Thanks for your remarks.

I can select Table in View - Tool bars, and the table tool bar appears when
the cursor in not in a table. I then go to the table to work there. When I
return the cursor to a non-table part of the document, the table tool bar
disappears. This still does not really lock the tool bar open all the time.

I have been docking the tool bar at the side for years (with OOo and now LO).
This minimizes the disturbance but there is still annoying sideways movement as
it appears or disappears.

Thanks again, Rick

Hi Rick :)

I think it's time to post a bug-report about that as once you have selected to
show the toolbar all the time it shouldn't suddenly vanish without being
de-selected deliberately.
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport

How about putting the table-toolbar on the right-hand-side instead until the
bug-report gets resolved? Hopefully that might minimise the disruption for you.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

I find the non-anchored position of that toolbar to be an irritant as
well, but because it anchors in the wrong place and doesn't move when
I move the document window, but that's not really on point

Have you tried docking the toolbar to a menu line and then locking its

Thanks for your remarks.

I have tried docking the tool bar, but it still appears and disappears
according
as I am in or not in a table. The least annoying dock is on the side of the
screen, but it still knocks the page a little sideways when it does its
appearance trick. Pleas explain exactly what you mean by docking to a menu
line. Perhaps I have not done that. I don't know wha you mean by menu line.

Thanks again,

Rick

Hi Rick again.

The default position for the toolbar is to be free-floating so that you can
drag
it around the screen even right into the middle. This might be the best way
for
you to have the toolbar now i think about it.

I think you already have the toolbar docked at the left of the screen so that
it is attached to the edge of the screen and appears as a single row/column
stretching from top-to-bottom rather than as a compact box floating over the
document.

Language evolves over time and the normal usage of the word dock is now
somewhat different but there are still several different meanings of the term.

Tom :)

I, too, find it irritant. I dock the table, image and other similar
toolbars to the bottom of the screen so my text doesn't dance around
when I move the cursor in and out of tables (and numbering lists...).

As for installing some of those icons permanently, I have done once what
is the second best thing for a toolbar that I often use, the bullets and
numbering toolbar:
– In a personal toolbar, I install a copy of the icons I use regularly.
Because it's a personal toolbar, it stays on the screen as long as I
want it.
– I have emptied the bullets and numbering toolbar so there is only one
icon in it. I have docked it to he right side of the standard toolbar.
The result: My personal toolbar, which almost mimics the original
bullets and numbering toolbar is always there on the left side of the
screen, along with a few formatting icons. The bullets and numbering
toolbar pops in and out, but it's only one icon long and sits to the
right of the standard toolbar, so my text doesn't dance.
