Jerky scrolling in Chrome, FF, Brave, VimB

2021-10-28 Thread Philip Rhoades via users

People,

I have had a reasonably powerful PC for the last few Fedora versions:

  i7-7700K CPU @ 4.20GHz 8 core
  32GB RAM
  40GB Swap
50% free on 4TB Seagate drive

and even though the PC seems unloaded according to Glances eg:

  < 40% CPU loading
  < 80 RAM used
  ~ 1% Swap used
  - Disk IO minimal

I still have problems using the up / down cursor keys, PgUp / PgDn keys,
mouse wheel for moving around on web pages - there is usually a second
or more delay and then a jump . .

Admittedly I do tend to load up the browsers with multiple windows and
tabs but if the system still seems unloaded, why is there the jerkiness?

Prior versions of Fedora were XFCE4, current F34 is Wayland and Sway but
the problem has been there over multiple versions . .

Thanks,

Phil.

BTDT. Once, when I was doing tech support for a company selling
security equipment to self-storage facilities I started a tempest in a
teapot because a brain fart made me forget the term multimeter and I
referred to it in my notes as a VOM. Later, I almost caused another one
by calling a power light a pilot light but caught myself in time.

When I was doing support for an ISP, I reluctantly referred to folders
because that's what the callers understood, but if we had to go to a
CLI, I'd call them directories, explaining that it was the proper term
in that environment.

In '68 I was using a teletype terminal with paper tape to store programs.

Now I encounter confusion when I ask that posts in scientific forums
copy and paste text from the "terminal" into a post because their screen
snapshot is difficult to read and cuts off critical information at the end

The key information you need for flash memory devices is the ENDURANCE which is
the amount of
data that can be written to the device before it fails. It is typically quoted
in TBW - Terabytes Written.

There is a standard for measuring the figure for various work loads.

I think it is JESD218 which there is an overview of at

https://www.jedec.org/standards-documents/focus/flash/solid-state-drives

but the specs are behind a paywall now. (Used to be free to download).

The standard is interesting, but not required reading you will pleased to know.

There are two workloads that are often quoted in spec sheets.
The client workload - meaning a typical office worker workload.
The server workload - meaning a server workload.

There is also a random workload, but its is rare to see that quoted as the life
times are very short.

Personal I will not buy an SSD or memory stick that does not publish its
JESD218 client workload figures.

As examples I've quickly found specs for samsung and SanDisk.

On
https://www.samsung.com/uk/memory-storage/nvme-ssd/970-evo-plus-nvme-m-2-ssd-1tb-mz-v7s1t0bw/

find endurance on the page. It tells you that the drive 1200TBW.

Then figures for SanDisk SSD's are here
https://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/23603/~/ssd-endurance

and you can compare these figures, the best is 600TBW.

FYI the last SSD I got was a Intel part and its had 1000TBW+ Endurance.

power-on-hours and reallocations are interesing, but its the endurance you need
to predict life time.
Assuming you can calculate a figure the amount of data that you write your
device.

I back to a file server from all my hosts, then copy off the backups and put
that copy off site.

All use Fedora of course.

I know, but I do, on purpose. Because:

   "journalctl" will show you everything.

Is a right bastard to deal with. Quite apart from having to remember
new options for a new command, as opposed to just reading a text
file, I find that it's got to trawl through a behemoth of data to come
up with results. To call it sluggish would be an understatement. It's
overkill for most things, and as fun to use as working out regex
parameters.

Maybe spend a little time figuring it out. It's amazingly useful once
you start to understand it. I don't find it sluggish at all, but maybe
that's because I use SSDs.
