Thanks for that clarification Matthew, I guess I will upgrade soon then. I
always wonder if upgrading is as good as performing a clean installation
(that's an additional question).

Well, I did a search asking something for "Fedora release support" and didn't
get much.
Then I consulted this site,
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/releases/lifecycle/
That site says exactly what you confirmed (13 months after the release).
However I got a bit confused in the section called Maintenance schedule where
it says "''Release n'' is supported until four weeks after the release of
''Release M+2''". I didn't know if 'n' and 'M' were the same thing here.

Its all clear to me now though,
thanks a lot,

Anil

Sorry, which section? Do you have a link? We're working on redesigning the
layout of our docs, so looking at this is timely. :)

hi,
for me, it's not necessarily that the explanations were confusing, but
rather the section on the site itself.

for example: the currently supported releases of Fedora are under Past
Releases > Supported Releases. even though 36 isn't out yet, it is very
confusing to see the supposedly most current stable release be listed
under Past Releases. there are also two other tabs: Development Releases
and Upcoming Releases that are found above the Past Releases tab.

I guess all of this is to say that it *is* a bit confusing to navigate
at first with all the different tabs. once you figure out what they
actually mean, it's fine, though.

just my two cents on that. it's pretty comprehensive regardless.

Until 4 weeks after the Fedora Linux 36 release. That's currently scheduled
for 2022-04-19, which makes EOL for Fedora Linux 34 2022-05-17.

I'm curious where you found the explanations that were confusing, and how we

It's up to you. It's generally the case that when a new release comes out,
the updates to the previous still-supported one slow down to
mostly just security updates. Some people prefer this — one of the podcasts
was even recommending it recently. On the other hand, if you _like_ having
newer, more up-to-date software, you can update.

[389-users] Re: Help to understand pre-hashed login

2022-01-04 Thread Pierre Rogier
Hi,
Although Marc is right, I do not think it will help you:
You can generate the hash with pwdhash then store the hashed value in
userpassword.
But you still need to use the clear password to authenticate.
If using the hashed value would be enough to be able to authenticate, it
would nullify the hash interest (because hashed value would not protect
more than using clear value).

IMHO if the application is running on the server, the easiest way is to use
ldapi (i.e named socket) because no password is needed if the application
has the right to open the socket.

Otherwise strong authentication could be used but that is more painful to
handle on the application side.
A last method is to use reversible encryption to store an encrypted
password and let the application decode it (as ds389 does with the
replication agreement password)
but the issue is then to protect the encryption key ...

Regards,
  Pierre
