Fedora doesn't package various codecs like H.264 for legal reasons; you
need to enable the RPM Fusion Free repository, which is a supplemental
repository that contains legally encumbered software. A guide is at <
https://rpmfusion.org/Configuration>. After enabling it, I believe the
package you are looking for is "gstreamer1-libav". -ben

Oh, that'd make sense. I'm self-hosting and my DMARC record is set up
to deny delivery for all domains except mine. I guess I'll have to
modify it to permit Fedora's mail server. Thanks for the tip. -ben

Currently, the From: field on any emails I send to Fedora lists gets
obfuscated, like:

How do I turn this behavior off? I'm fine with my real address getting

You should be able to boot into a root shell by entering grub and
adding "init=/bin/bash" to the end of your kernel command line. You can
probably find detailed instructions with some googling, but basically
after you do that you can remount the root drive as read/write and then
readd your user to the wheel (admin) group. -ben

Wifi and sound broken after kernel upgrade 5.3.16 -> 5.4.7

2020-01-08 Thread Benjamin Lowry via users
Hey everyone, I'm on Fedora 31 and recently upgraded my kernel from
5.3.16 to 5.4.7, and now my sound (via snd_hda_intel) and wifi doesn't
work; the wifi options in GNOME are missing, and my only sound device
is the default PulseAudio "Dummy Output". Everything works fine if I
manually select the old kernel in GRUB. Is this a known issue, and
should I file a bug about this?

Re: OT: replace a timestamp across multiple files

2018-10-21 Thread Benjamin Smith
The way I've solved this in the past is to create a zone file template with
"variables" in the text that are easy to find. EG:

[TIMESTAMP]

is where the number goes. All my zone files are managed by a script that
parses the template files with values appropriate for each domain.

Re: PHP-FPM, PHP code in browser

2018-10-07 Thread Benjamin Smith
I've checked all of these to no avail. So I did a firm reset, not only
removing RPMs but also deleting any and all stale config files in /etc.
Now, after re-installing the RPMs, the default directory
(/var/www/html/phpinfo.php) works fine. However, the site config file
doesn't work, I get PHP code.

Now starting with very basic configs and stepping forward, line by line,
until I find the configuration lines that work.

Thanks

PHP-FPM, PHP code in browser

2018-10-07 Thread Benjamin Smith
I'm unable to get PHP too actually *run* instead of just downloading the
PHP sources. Coming from years of experience with Mod PHP wand I know that
PHP FPM is different. I've confirmed that both RPMs (native FC 27) are
installed, and that PHP-FPM and Apache are installed. I tried moving
/etc/https/conf.modules/PHP.conf. I've looked at /etc/https/php.conf and
read all comments. I've restarted phpfpm and Apache via system ctl. I've
restarted the system. How do I get Apache to connect to Phpfpm for PHP
scripts?

kmail repeatable hard crash

2015-04-21 Thread Benjamin Smith
I have kmail set up on F21/64/KDE spin laptop, a Dell Precision M3800, 8 GB

When I do a search for email using the "Search" function at the top, it hard
crashes anytime I enter in "seq=2". Further testing seems to show that the
following perl regex describes the input in the search box that causes
instant, hard crash of kmail:

Best experience for high resolution touch screen laptop?

2015-01-23 Thread Benjamin Smith
I'm a long time Fedora/KDE fan (since KDE 1.x days) and am just getting
familiar with my new Dell Precision M3800, and am experiencing a few issues.

1) You can go "too much resolution", especially when used in conjunction with
external displays. Default is 3200x1800 which isn't bad when I increase font
and icon size, but then it looks garish on a "normal" resolution (1080)
external monitor. Until I upgrade my other displays, I'd like to underdrive my
screen to 1680x1080 but that resolution doesn't show on the KDE display
settings dropdown - anything under max res is in 4:3 resolutions. EG:
1600x1200, etc.

How would I "assert" 1680x1050? I see this resolution when booted into Windows
so I know the hardware supports it. (This is the first time in several years
that Fedora/KDE hasn't "just worked")

2) KDE with Fedora 21 doesn't seem to multitouch. Is there a way to enable
this capability? Also, when using multiple screens, the touch goes to the
wrong screen! (when I touch the touch screen and the mouse appears on the
external display)

Is Gnome significantly ahead of KDE in this respect?

I've posted the output:
http://hal.schoolpathways.com/ben/dmesg.txt
http://hal.schoolpathways.com/ben/xrandr.txt
http://hal.schoolpathways.com/ben/lspci.txt

Re: Printing does not work after preupgrade to F16

Hi Memebers!

Yesterday i made the preupgarde from F15 to F16, which worked quite

yum groupremove Gnome Desktop enviroment
this removed all the packages from gnome.
After this i did:
yum groupinstall KDE
Which installed KDE.

Now: If i lof in as root or as a user, i cannot print. I see the
printers (except in thunderbird and firefox), but when i press "print"
nothing happens.
So i thought of looking into the printer configurations, but when i

Note: The last time i did change my desktop from Gnome to KDE with the
above mentioned method, printing worked perfectely. So i think, that
there might have happened system with the preupgrade.

Thx. for help, Benjamin.

Hi Again!
I did not solve the problem but made a work around after trying to solve
the problem. It seems that there is something wrong with cups or hplips;
i Do not know.

but I made the following:
Installed hplips and cups again. And started cups in a terminal:
# service cups start
# Redirecting to /bin/systemctl start cups.service
After that i opened my printer configs and installed a new printer.
After that my printer worked again.
I´m not sure if service cups start did solve the problem, but i read it
somewhere.

Packet loss problem and some questions related with OS

2011-11-02 Thread Benjamin

 Hi All,

I have some doubts , please clear me.

Query 1 ) should we set irq afinity of pci lan interface or onboard lan
interface or we can do for both ?

Query 2) H/w must be APIC enabled and for them only we can do set irq
afinity , is it so?

Query 3) What are the root cause for packet loss on interface ?

Actually in one of my server , i m having strange result, i can not see
any value update for lan interface in interrupts.

Re: irqbalance in fedora15

Yes, I want to set manually irq afinity for my lan interface on
multiple cpus.

How to do it?

Benjo
Actually, in my experience you'd want each device (or actually each
irq - especially in the case of multi-queue device) to fall squarely
on one CPU core by manually setting the irq_affinity.

I place very little faith on automated irq balancing.

Re: how to bind single interface with more than one cpu

2011-10-19 Thread Benjamin
  Hi,

I found that for irq distribution across multiple cpus CONFIG_IRQBALANCE
must enabled in kernel.so i tried to check in my existing kernel but i m
not getting it in config-2.6.40.6 so i downloaded 3.0.4 but when i m
going to compile it , i try to find irqbalance optionn in menuconfig.
But not getting such option.

So please tell me from which option or module , i will be having
irqbalance enabled in my kernel.?

Thanks,

Re: how to bind single interface with more than one cpu

2011-10-19 Thread Benjamin
  Hi,

I tried to change value in interface interrupt's smp_afinity value

as per my understanding , smp_afinity values

1 for cpu0
2 for cpu1
4 for cpu2
  8 for cpu3
  that way cpu0+cpu1 = 1 + 2 = 3

so i set different values for test .but each time it only binds with
single cpu from cpu0 / cpu1 / cpu2 or cpu3.

i also start cpuspeed service and irqbalance --oneshot.

But same result.i am not able to use more than 1 cpu for single interface.

Re: how to bind single interface with more than one cpu

2011-10-19 Thread Benjamin
  Hi,

I am using fedora 15 for application server. That applicaton is very
loaded in network and we have good h/w which having 4 core cpu and
currently 1 lan interface are using. So now i want to bind that interface
with more than one cpu to gain more performance and more throughput.

I tried to do it by smp_afinity, but i can't. so i need advice and help.
Is there anything required from kernel side.? any parameter or any thing
which need to enable in kernel.?

Re: getting packet dropperd on interface

2011-10-15 Thread Benjamin

 Hi,

my output of command :

ethtool -g em1

Ring parameters for em1:
Pre-set maximums:
RX:4096
RX Mini:0
RX Jumbo:0
TX:4096

Current hardware settings:
RX:1024
RX Mini:0
RX Jumbo:0
TX:1024

before current value for RX and TX are 256 and i increased it by 1024
for both RX and TX. But still we having packet loss on interface.

How to verify that buffer full for RX and TX?

Regards,
Benjo

What does ethtool -g em1 say? A very common reason of dropping packets
is that the rx and tx buffers have been full. In this case, you can
increase the count with ethtool -G switch and check again.

Thx for your reply!
That sounds not rely good with regard to gdesklets. Also because i like
the desktop extensions of gdesklets. Does anyone know if there is
another applications by which you can add weather, notices and stuff
like that on the desktop, because in the gnome-extensions i could not
find anything. That is why i wanted to switch back to gdesklets (which i
used under gnome2f14).

From the looks of it the developers aren't really sure themselves:

This also doesn't work. I have also tried http://virt-manager.org/ Fedora

Re: OpenOffice crashes compiz on F 14

2011-01-03 Thread Benjamin
I also recognized problems with compiz. When i try to watch flash videos
via streaming in firefox, then the picture doesn´t move, when i toggle
full screen. But still the videos is running, cause i can hear the
sound. Whenn i switch back to normal screen, the picture begins to move
again and everything is normal...

Lexmark Printer X75 does not work

2010-12-29 Thread Benjamin
Hi everyone!
I have tried several times to install the lexmark X75 on my F14 (and
also in F13) but it didn´t work. I have tried the following guides for
the printer:
http://home.online.no/~enrio/
and:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/hardware-peripherals/13305-driver-lexmark-x74-x75.html

both guides didn´t work. When i install the driver everything works
fine. Then I add the printer in cups and that also works fine. But then,
when I try to print a testpage cups says:

gestoppt
/"rastertolxx74.c:1792: Unknown option
job-uuid=urn:uuid:36e5e988-d359-3c30-68a8-f35f70e14833."
/
That´s all and the printer does nothing at all. I couldn´t find a
solution to this problem. HOpe someone can help me or encountered the
same problem (which is of course not suprising with lexmark printers).

Thx Guys, Benjamin.

Solution:

Use your browser to download the rpm "openssl-1.0.0b-1.fc14.i686.rpm"
by hand and force re install it:
rpm --force -i .../openssl-1.0.0b-1.fc14.i686.rpm

This solved the probelm.

/usr/lib/libssl.so.1.0.0b removed!

2010-11-24 Thread Benjamin
Hello everybody!

I have made a big s***!While trying get the literatur program "Mendeley"
getting started a tried to create links. Because the linking did not
work i removed the link the following link. In exact i did the follwoing:

[r...@banjo lib]# ls /usr/lib/libssl.so*
/usr/lib/libssl.so.10 /usr/lib/libssl.so.1.0.0b
[r...@banjo lib]# unlink /usr/lib/libssl.so.1.0.0b libssl.so.0
unlink: zusätzlicher Operand „libssl.so.0“
„unlink --help“ gibt weitere Informationen.
[r...@banjo lib]# unlink /usr/lib/libssl.so.1.0.0b
[r...@banjo lib]# ls /usr/lib/libssl.so*
/usr/lib/libssl.so.10
[r...@banjo lib]# yum install openssl
There was a problem importing one of the Python modules
required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was:

libssl.so.10: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Please install a package which provides this module, or
verify that the module is installed correctly.

It's possible that the above module doesn't match the
current version of Python, which is:
2.7 (r27:82500, Sep 16 2010, 18:03:06)
[GCC 4.5.1 20100907 (Red Hat 4.5.1-3)]

If you cannot solve this problem yourself, please go to
the yum faq at:
http://yum.baseurl.org/wiki/Faq

However,
--
I tried to search the internet to solve this problem but i found no
help! So how and were do i get the lib "libssl.so.1.0.0b" and how should
a link this with /usr/lib/libssl.so.10. Please help!

Thx, Benjamin D.
