Re: Gigabyte: "we cannot offer full support on Linux"

2022-05-17 Thread Richard Ibbotson
Hi

I used to build workstations and servers for the Computacenter in St
Albans England. 200 machines a night. I've just had a long session
with a Gigabyte board and an NVIDIA card. A GK107GL Quadro K600 card
which refused to work with anything. I tried Debian 11. Linux Mint.
Arch Linux and Fedora 35. Every time I installed a system with this
hardware it installed the wrong driver or the monitor was set at the
wrong refresh rate. I nearly gave up and bought a different NVIDIA
card. Finally got it to work with Ubuntu 22.04 which set the correct
refresh rate and installed the correct driver which is the 470.103.01.
It was a long head banging session to work that out. The Nouveau
driver nearly worked but kept on locking up an crashing.

I've built my own Jitsi server. Seems to be a good video conference

build a working server on whatever you choose. Does a good job.

This should be easy to learn or teach. You just need a web browser to
connect to it and a separate box for the firewall. Choice of hardware
seems to be a long discussion. Popular hardware is something like a
Dell form factor PC. You can get them from anywhere.

It's still relevant. Works if you follow what they say. Privoxy can be a
problem. Easier not to use it. In /etc/tor/torrc you can uncomment...

 SOCKSPort 9050
ControlPort 9051
HashedControlPassword 16:

Then start Tor with 'tor -f /etc/tor/torrc' as a user and not as root. In
Firefox change the settings under Preferences > Advanced > Network >
Connection > Settings > Manual proxy configuration > Socks host =
127.0.0.1 Port 9050 Check the SockV5 box. Check Proxy DNS when using
Socks V5

As a root user do... fdisk -l This will give you a list of
partitions. Which might look like...

/dev/sda1
/dev/sda2
/dev/sda5

You have to work out which one to umount. In this case it might be
' umount /dev/sda2 '. Doing that would unmount the drive or
partition. You can then run fsck.

Finally found this. Which might or might not give some clues. The bit
at the bottom of the page might be worth trying. Remove wine-
pulseaudio. Trouble is it also takes out Wine which I would like to
keep. Tried to remove pavucontrol and reinstall. Still nothing.
Tried modprobe snd-hda-intel and modprobe pulseaudio but obviously
that's not going to work. Result was ... Module pulseaudio not found
in directory /lib/modules/4.3.5-300.fc23.x86_64. But that could be me
trying the wrong modprobe command. Also tried...

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=154002

I did pactl list. It said...

XDG_RUNTIME_DIR (/run/user/1000) is not owned by us (uid 0), but by
uid 1000! (This could e g happen if you try to connect to a non-root
PulseAudio as a root user, over the native protocol. Don't do that.)
Connection failure: Connection refused
pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused

Killed pulseaudio and restarted as a user with service pulseaudio
restart. Might have to reinstall the whole system. Was hoping to stay
away from that one.

PulseAudio

2016-03-25 Thread Richard Ibbotson
Hi

I know a lot of people don't like PulseAudio but that's what comes
with Fedora 23. My problem is this. After a dnf update I find that
selinux has done something it didn't do before. PulseAudio has ceased
to work properly. I'm looking at a dummy output the sound card is not
found by PulseAudio in my workstation.

I've tried to set permissions for PulseAudio in selinux. This allowed
the sound server to start up when I did 'service pulseaudio restart' .
Then there was some kind of error message about some keys not being
created. Still no sound.

I've seen this somewhere before but can't find it on the internet with
a search. Tried the PulseAudio site. Can anyone point me in the right
direction with this ? Also tried man pulseaudio. Nothing useful there

Qt 5.5.1. xcb windowing system. I've done the usual Google search.
Can't find anything that makes a lot of sense.

Switched off some plugins. I think that's done it.

Not used Wireshark for a while. I'll have a go.

After some more investigation I find that 195.154.162.172:21 starts up
after starting a web browser. Kind of sounds like I'm being tracked.
I've checked all of the settings. Can't see anything in the browser
that relates to the FTP port. I'll have a look at firewall settings. As
far as I know port 21 is blocked.

Like GUI based software that has been around since the 90's a menu
appears when you start it. In the case of Knights you'll see a panel
called “new game”. It asks you to select a computer engine. You can
also configure an engine in the panel. After you select whatever you
want click on OK. If you want to change anything else there is a
settings part of the menu at the top of the screen. You can change
anything in there. You can also add a new theme.

dnf search gnuchess

See also gnome-chess and knights and xboard. I use Knights. You can

Hi

Does anyone know what this might be about ? Fedora 23 with a

I'm not running an FTP application. It's almost as if the desktop is
doing this on it's own. Don't know why there is an established
connection to 195.154.162.172. Anyone make any suggestions ? If I do
whois 195.154.162.172 I get.

The answer this one is

https://askubuntu.com/questions/631362/error-getting-authority-error-initializing-authority-could-not-connect-no-suc

“ Add the option nofail to the failing mount point or all the mount
points that are not required at boot time. “ That fixed it. Working fine
now :)

Thank you.

Hi

I did a dnf update on my F23 workstation. After rebooting to make sure
that the updates were working properly I find that I can't get to the
login screen. I see the blue Fedora logo for a split second. Then
the command line appears with a message to do Ctrl-D or login as root.
Nouveau drivers for the graphics card. I can login as root and use a
text editor. After the failed X startup I can see the following
error message on the screen

Error getting authority: Error initialization authority: Could not
connect: No such file or directory (g-io-error-quark, 1)

If I have a look at the log in /home/user/.local/share/xorg it says...

Fatal server error: xf86OpenConsole: Cannot open virtual console 1
(Permission
denied.

If I try startx as as a user or as root I can see.. for example... in
/var/log/Xorg.0.log...

dbus core: error connecting to system bus:
org.freedesktop.Dbus.Error.FileNotFound (Failed to connect to socket
/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory)

Can anyone suggest how to fix this ? I can't send in lengthy logs due
to the fact that I can't ssh into the machine or run a second or third
console. Access to one console only.

Claws mail and Evolution can be good. But I still like Alpine and
still find a lot of Mutt users out there. Seems like a lot of people
still like Thunderbird.

It was doing some strange things earlier on. Seems to be fine now.
Apparently the way to fix the Kmail issue is to hold down Shift +
delete at the same time. Not something that you would know about
normally. Never mind. Working now. Thank you.

Kmail

2016-01-23 Thread Richard Ibbotson
Hi

I suppose I could ask this question on the KDE list but their Mailman
software is doing some strange things just now. Since I upgraded to
Fedora 23 I find that I get a message in Kmail when I try to delete
some mail

“Do you really want to delete the selected message ? “

I have to click on this hundreds of times to delete any unwanted mail.
Can anyone suggest which setting to change to get rid of this ? KDE
4.14.14 Kmail 4.14.10. No. I do_not want to know about any other mail
app. Just some help with this one.

I had similar problems with OpenShot and MLT. I opened up rpmfusion-
free-rawhide.repo with a text editor and set enabled=0 to enabled=1.
After running DNF update the result was that some F22 packages were
installed. Not the best solution. But it works.

If you want another desktop you can do. For example

dnf group install "KDE plasma workspaces"

You can do something similar for XFCE or LXDE or whatever.

Just worked out that I can fix this by opening up rpmfusion-free-
rawhide.repo and setting enabled=0 to enabled=1. Which allows me to
install the F22 versions of mlt and OpenShot.

I suppose that there will be an F23 update eventually.

Hi

After the F22 -> F23 upgrade which took out OpenShot and MLT with --

dnf install mlt

dnf install openshot mlt

Error: nothing provides libavfilter.so.5()(64bit) needed by
libavdevice-2.6.3-1.fc22.x86_64.
package openshot-1.4.3-3.fc22.noarch requires mlt, but none of the
providers can be installed

dnf install kdenlive mlt

Error: nothing provides ffmpeg needed by kdenlive-0.9.10-1.fc22.i686.
nothing provides libavfilter.so.5()(64bit) needed by

Anyone suggest how I can get out of this ? Would like to install
OpenShot and kdenlive.

That probably answers my question about finding this after the
upgrade... 'dnf upgrade'

Skipping packages with broken dependencies:
 kf5-kdesu x86_64
5.15.0-2.fc23 updates

I did this to upgrade from F22...

dnf --releasever=23 --setopt=deltarpm=false distro-sync --nogpgcheck

Which worked for me. Mostly...

Motion has always been useful. For example

I think there are other programs out there. I'm sure someone else

Re: The earliest release of Linux by Linus Torvalds

2015-02-26 Thread Richard Ibbotson
Hi

Just to put my own 10 cents worth in here. I went to Manchester
Computing Centre throughout the 90's. At that time Dr Owen Le Blanc
was writing some early code for the GNU/Linux kernel. He was in touch
with Linus a lot of the time...

http://people.man.ac.uk/~zlsiial/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MCC_Interim_Linux

I helped Owen and some other people to start ManLUG which is still
running today. www.manlug.org. The rest is history. Over the years
I've spent many happy hours flying around the world promoting GNU/Linux
by writing for magazines.

It's been fun :)

This usually works for me. But it doesn't always work.

Yes. Done that. It works fine :) Just wondered if I might be able to
get the RPM to work.

Re: rpm editor for MasterPdfEditor

2014-10-28 Thread Richard Ibbotson
Hi

My own problem with this is that after doing ... rpm -Uvh master-pdf-
editor-1.9.25.x86_64.rpm on fc20 I get

" file / from install of master-pdf-editor-1.9.25-2.x86_64 conflicts
with file from package filesystem-3.2-19.fc20.x86_64 "

Is there a way to round this ?

Yes. Printers. Cleverly designed to waste resources. I find the
ML-1510 is great for prinitng back & white. The HP printer does waste
cartridges but I mostly use it for scanning and copying and printing
photographs. Plenty of recycled cartridges on eBay at low cost. I
have a local printer recycling shop who take the old cartridges.

The Samsung colour laser printers are also excellent. Plenty of those
on eBay. Also many recycled laser cartridges.

I use a Samsung ML-1510 laser printer and a Hewlett-Packard Photosmart
5224 all in one. Works for me. You can get these HP printers second
hand from eBay at sensible prices in good condition. The HP all in
one software works great on Fedora.

Fedora 20 Broken Dependencies

2014-03-10 Thread Richard Ibbotson
Hello there

I've done the usual search around the net and can't find a good answer
to this one. Can anyone help ? When trying to run 'yum update' I get
broken dependencies...

Skipped (dependency problems):
AtomicParsley.x86_64 0:0.9.5-2.fc20 ffmpeg.x86_64 0:2.1.4-1.fc20 ffmpeg-
libs.x86_64 0:2.1.4-1.fc20 get_iplayer.noarch 0:2.85-5.fc20
mencoder.x86_64 0:1.1-19.20140211svn.fc20 mplayer.x86_64
0:1.1-19.20140211svn.fc20
mplayer-common.x86_64 0:1.1-19.20140211svn.fc20

I have tried ... ' yum --disablerepo=rpmfusion-free-updates --skip-
broken install \*.rpm ' and it says.

Packages skipped because of dependency problems:
1:akmod-nvidia-331.49-1.fc20.2.x86_64 from rpmfusion-nonfree-updates
akmod-nvidia-173xx-173.14.38-5.fc20.4.x86_64 from rpmfusion-nonfree-
updates
akmod-nvidia-304xx-304.119-2.fc20.4.x86_64 from rpmfusion-nonfree-
updates

nonfree-updates
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-173xx-libs-173.14.38-3.fc20.x86_64 from rpmfusion-
nonfree-updates
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-304xx-304.119-1.fc20.x86_64 from rpmfusion-
nonfree-updates
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-304xx-libs-304.119-1.fc20.x86_64 from rpmfusion-
nonfree-updates
1:xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs-331.49-1.fc20.x86_64 from rpmfusion-

Anyone know where to go from here ? Would be a good idea to fix this.

Kmail 1.1.32 Issue

2010-04-17 Thread Richard Ibbotson
Hi

I've got a problem with the Fedora 12 KDE 4.4.1 and KDE 4.4.2 versions
of Kmail (just upgraded). There are five messages stuck in the inbox
that I cannot delete. I have tried the Kmail delete button. Also
done a 'cd' to .kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/inbox/cur. There is nothing
in there to delete. In the inbox I can see messages with a subject of
(No Subject) including the brackets. The sender is "Unknown" and the
date is "Unknown". Mail download is from my ISP by Kmail.

Can anyone suggest where else I can look to delete these left over
stubs of previous messages ?
