To prevent this you can run `loginctl enable-linger` to prevent this behavior. https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/loginctl.html Thanks, Richard ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/new_issue

EXT4 journaling only protects the filesystem, not the files themselves. BRTFS does a checksum of the files as well, and because it writes out a new file, if that's interrupted, you still at least have the previous version of the file. Depending on the type of files, you may also want to take advantage of transparent compression. I know BTRFS took a long time to stabilize but it works pretty well for stand alone and RAID 1. I have an HP ENVY x360 with Ryzen 5 4500U that has been working great. Early on I had some weird issues where the mouse / trackpad would work during login, but not once the desktop loaded. Rebooting fixed it. But with the 5.15+ kernels I have had zero issues. It's got enough HP to play Tomb Raider from Steam. I did upgrade the memory to 16GB. It is a thin model, no optical drive and no Ethernet port. On the rare occasion I need Ethernet I have a USB-C adapter. What are you doing that would require that much disk swap? And even if it did the performance would be pretty bad unless you're running an SSD/NVMe drive, and even if you are, in memory swap would still be faster. Also, now that processes are killed automatically in OOM situations having large amounts of swap isn't really necessary. At the end of the day it's all about the problem you want to deal with: 1. Large physical swap which may prevent OOM but your system slows to a crawl to the point of being unusable (but possibly recoverable) if you're very patient. 2. zram swap + OOM killer which may choose the wrong process to kill but keeps your system responsive. For me, the only time I max out my memory (32GB real, ~48GB w/ zram swap) is when building very large packages. If I was to use disk swap that would significantly slow down an already large/long build so I prefer option #2. Ejecting USB drive causing system reboot
I have a 125GB NVMe drive in a USB 3.0 enclosure that I was trying to repartition using the Gnome Disks app. It failed miserably only giving me errors, so I loaded up gparted. That worked fine other than the usual "I couldn't inform the kernel so you need to reboot to see the new partition" error message. Since it was USB I just unplugged and replugged it. Problem solved. After I was happy with the result and closed gparted, I went to Nautilus and ejected the drive. The eject button disappeared but the drive entry in the navigator did not, and then my system suddenly rebooted. It's worth mentioning that I'm testing the 5.15.2-200 kernel on Fedora 35, but even prior to running the testing kernel, with USB thumb drives I noticed when I ejected them, not only did the entry not disappear, but the eject button remained as well. Restart systemd service based on memory usage
I have a Kiosk I'm trying out using Chromium, unfortunately it seems to have a memory leak and crashes in less than 24 hours of usage. I see systemD has an option for "MemoryMax" but was wondering if anyone has actually used it? Is it as simple as MemoryMax=512M OnFailure=Restart or something like that? I think I broke my BTRFS RAID 1 array
I have been running a 3 disk RAID 1 btrfs array for a few weeks now and simulated more than a dozen power failures without issue. Yesterday I decided to add my 4th disk, which was the original media drive. I was able to add it to the array easy enough and then initiated a full balance, however, when I was trying to squeeze the case panels back on (SATA power cables are stiff!) two of the drives (sdc, sdd) lost power. I didn't notice the problem for a few minutes until I looked at the storage section of Cockpit. I immediately initiated a shutdown and corrected the issue by rerouting the power cables a bit. After booting back up I tried to restart the balance but it would run briefly and then stop. dmesg shows: [ 155.497940] BTRFS info (device sdc): balance: start -d -m -s [ 155.499804] BTRFS info (device sdc): relocating block group 10451967541248 flags data|raid1 [ 162.517172] BTRFS info (device sdc): found 15 extents, stage: move data extents [ 162.776081] BTRFS error (device sdc): tree level mismatch detected, bytenr=10359313989632 level expected=0 has=2 [ 162.776087] BTRFS error (device sdc): tree level mismatch detected, bytenr=10359313989632 level expected=0 has=2 [ 162.776090] BTRFS error (device sdc): tree level mismatch detected, bytenr=10359313989632 level expected=0 has=2 [ 162.855784] BTRFS info (device sdc): balance: ended with status: -117 I ran a scrub and a little over 5 hours later it shows it made 4 corrections: # btrfs scrub start -B /mnt/media scrub done for d9a2a011-77a2-43be-acd1-c9093d32125b Scrub started:Tue Apr 13 17:09:51 2021 Status: finished Duration: 5:20:52 Total to scrub: 7.34TiB Rate: 399.47MiB/s Error summary:verify=4 Corrected: 4 Uncorrectable: 0 Unverified: 0 WARNING: errors detected during scrubbing, corrected However, when I try to balance again I still get errors: [19480.281381] BTRFS info (device sdc): balance: start -d -m -s [19480.298196] BTRFS info (device sdc): relocating block group 10451967541248 flags data|raid1 [19485.587630] BTRFS info (device sdc): found 15 extents, stage: move data extents [19485.801278] BTRFS error (device sdc): tree level mismatch detected, bytenr=10359313989632 level expected=0 has=2 [19485.801287] BTRFS error (device sdc): tree level mismatch detected, bytenr=10359313989632 level expected=0 has=2 [19485.801288] BTRFS error (device sdc): tree level mismatch detected, bytenr=10359313989632 level expected=0 has=2 [19485.865739] BTRFS info (device sdc): balance: ended with status: -117 Where do I go from here? You can do all these great things with BTRFS! But even if you test your raid array multiple times, a bad firmware may still eat all your data :) I know you can't give absolute answers sometimes, but it feels like you're often a btrfs cheerleader and critic at the same time :) It sounds like there needs to be an easy to find list of known good and known bad drives to use (be it btrfs or other similar filesystem). My plan is to use Seagate Terascale drives which as far as I can tell are CMR and not SMR at least. While still annoying (chrome locking up because it can't read/write to it's cache in my /home) my desk chair benchmarking says that it was definitely better as nodatacow. Now that I think about it, initial syncing I'm likely getting the blocks out of order which would explain things a bit more. I'm not too worried about nodatasum for this file as the nature of the blockchain is to be able to detect errors (intentional or accidental) already and should be self correcting. You could install bcc-tools and run btrfsslower with the same > (exclusive) workload with datacow and nodatacow to see if latency is > meaningfully higher with datacow but I don't expect that this is a > factor. > That's an interesting tool. So I don't want to post all of it here as it could have some private info in it but I'd be willing to share it privately. One interesting output now is the blockchain file is almost constantly getting written to but since it's synced, it's only getting appended to (my guess) and I'm not noticing any "chair benchmark" issues but one of the writes did take 1.8s while most of them were a few hundred ms or less. iowait just means the CPU is idle waiting for IO to complete. btrfs system slow down with 100GB file
I'm getting significant iowait while writing to a 100GB file. I have already made it nocow by copying it to another directory, marking the director nocow (+C) and using cat to re-create it from scratch. I was under the impression that this should fix the problem. On a tangent, it took about 30 minutes to delete the old file... My system is a Ryzen 5 3600 w/ 16GB or memory but it is a spinning disk. I use an NVME for the system and the spinning disk for /home. Currently I'm getting random GUI freezes due to the iowait problem and my HDD indicator light basically stays on solid for over an hour now. Any tips? So from what I understand once a file is >0 that you can't set nodatacow. I'm playing around with cryptocurrency and the current one downloads the whole blockchain and it's at 65GB and growing. I think the growing part is the problem. That and it's being stored on /home which is a spinning disk not an SSD like the system disk. I'm seeing a lot of IO wait in glances and the system is sluggish even though CPU and memory usage is relatively low. Ideas? Limit size of a btrfs subvolume?
I think this is one of the corner cases for BTRFS as most people want the opposite behavior, but on one computer I run MythTV and it manages how many recordings to keep based on the available free space. Once free space comes down to a certain threshold it starts expiring older recordings. Obviously this runs counter to btrfs's subvolume method of sharing free space. So is there a way to set the "maximum" size of a subvolume? Google has failed me on this one. I could convert it in place but I just did that with my home drive on my desktop and it does take a while to create and remove the ext2_saved image. Wouldn't it be better to create a 2 drive raid1 array, copy the files over, update fstab, and then add the original drive to the raid1 array? As far as balancing, I wasn't sure it was helpful but was thinking of just spreading the data around :) > For btrfs raid5 that is also true, it'll just make new block groups > that have more stripes. The main reason I'm considering raid5 is that I have one 4TB drive right now, if I add 2 more with raid one, I'm only going to get 2TB. I know it's kind of a duh, you're mirroring and right now I have no redundancy, but this is for home use and $$$/TB is important and I can't fit any more drives in this case :) Toss up on xxhash64, it's as fast or faster than crc32c to compute, > collision resistance, but csum algo is a mkfs time only option - only > reason why I mention it. The current drive is ext4 formatted so my original plan was to create a 2 drive raid1 and copy the files over, format the old drive and then add it to the array and rebalance (a +1 for raid1!). I could switch over to the 2 drive raid1 array for a while and "wait and see" or is there a more proactive method? Obviously if I go raid5 I won't have this option unless I can temporarily house my data on a separate drive. Looking at the link it looks like I'm OK? # smartctl -l scterc /dev/sda1 smartctl 7.1 2019-12-30 r5022 [x86_64-linux-5.9.16-200.fc33.x86_64] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-19, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org SCT Error Recovery Control: Read:100 (10.0 seconds) Write:100 (10.0 seconds) The drive is a Seagate Terascale which is supposedly designed for cloud computing / datacenters. So raid1 or raid5... Re: btrfs RAID 5?
Chris, Thanks for the detailed explanation. Too much to quote for my follow up question :) So for 3 drives and my desire to have more capacity and redundancy (for drive failure) would I be better off with RAID1 or RAID5 w/ btrfs? Would RAID1 still allow for any single drive failure? I don't really need the faster IO RAID5 might provide.
