WAYLAND_DISPLAY=wayland-0 or something similar will show. I figured this would be easy: Just look in the .desktop files in /usr/share/xsessions and see what is different about gnome and gnome on xorg. But no. It is a mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a gnome developer's brain: Both gnome desktop files execute gnome-session the exact same way.
