4.17.7 has been solid for me as well for the better par of a week now.
(I was one of the folks who reported this issues a couple of weeks back.
My system was hanging during backups to an NFS-mounted NAS.)

Hi,

Before kernerl 4.17.7, I had issues during my duplicity-based backups.

With kernel 4.17.7, no issue to date.
I've been testing it since its release in Fedora 28.

Define "backups." I'm using it and had no issues using rsync to back up
to an external drive on both a desktop machine and a laptop:

# nice -n 19 /bin/rsync -av -S --exclude-from=/etc/skipdirs.rsync /
/media/external-3TB-Drive

where "/etc/skipdirs.rsync" contains:

/proc/*
/sys/*
/dev/*
/media/**
/mnt/**
/var/log/journal/*
/run/media/**
/var/lib/docker/*

The only issues I've heard of are anecdotal regarding suspend and such
(it fixes a lot of problems that 4.17.4-200 through 4.17.6-200 had, but
not all of them) and it's unclear if it's a kernel issue or a particular
set of ancillary processes (VMs and the like) that's causing it. The
only thing that seems definitive is that it behaves "differenly" than
4.17.3-200 and earlier kernels, whatever "differently" means.

Well, for two days since I booted back to old kernel there
have been no crashes of the computer or the router, and USB
backups have been working OK. It is looking like it was the
kernel doing it, but how it can crash the router is still
very mysterious.

Must be that disguised code inserted in linux by evil hackers
that completely rewrote in a totally obfuscated fashion the
entire network stack under the guise of improving network
performance by 0.0001%, but really attempts to attack routers
from the inside rather than the outside :-).

Supposedly, you could do something like:

echo "kernel-4.17.3-200" >/etc/dnf/protected.d/kernel.conf

That's supposed to make sure dnf doesn't remove that package. Note that
the "kernel" package is really a meta package that includes the
kernel-core, kernel-modules and whatnot. I've never relied on this
bit of dnf magic, but it's supposed to work.

I just tested it on a VM by "protecting" an old kernel and it seemed to
work (that kernel wasn't removed, even though it was old). Your mileage
may vary.

4am.  That is about the time the cleaning staff came through.  We had to
put a camera into the area to figure out what was happening and we saw
the staff plug the vacuum into the server's power strip. We had to screw
plates into those outlets to get them to stop!

But you might be having a utility event then in the middle of night that
is producing the electrical glitch.  "Oh no we don't to anything like

keeping those gremlins away from your electronics.  I have been up at

Finding where the gremlins are popping out can be s much fun.

Not.

I'll be interested to see if both stay up for several days now,

I'm booted back on the 4.16.16-300.fc28.x86_64 kernel now and
I'll see if it stays up for a while.

The router interaction is weird. If it is a kernel bug, how
does it crash the router. If it is a router bug, why did it
just show up as soon as I got the suspicious kernel? There
is nothing in the router configuration that should require
my computer to be up.

What model router?
What services?  First place I would look at is DHCPD there.
Unless you are doing something fancy with gaming or web proxying
Electrical?  Summertime brownouts can be REALLY bad on low end stuff.
Get a Tripp Lite Line Conditioner (LC line; they have been making
stuff like this since '47)

Also check the condition of your notebook's battery.
Perhaps the cleaning help plugged the vacumn into the same outlet
as your router :)

This happened to us at one branch office; ouch!
Or maybe it is gremlins.  :)  :)

I have more problems from sags than spikes.  That is why I use at line
conditioners (like Tripp Lite LC line) or UPS with line conditioning
(prevents constant switching to batteries when a sag drops the voltage
below 90v).  Notebooks tend not to be affected too much, but switches
and APs reset.  The utility (DTE) says I am 'within specs', but you can
see incandescent bulbs dim when anything heavy comes on line.  And my
kill-a-watt reports the voltage drops.

I had a wireless extender plugged directly into a regular surge
protector, and my notebook would regularly drop its WiFi connection then
have to reassociate and release its address.  I had to get a LC just for
the one device.

FWIW, it seems there may be a few nasty hard to diagnose issues with recent
kernels.
4.17.7 may be key to fixing issues...

I think there is something in there related to networking.  With kernels
17.4 and .5 my suspend hangs are right where the network shutdown
normally occurs.  And I got this only when QEMU is running with some VM
active on the virtual network.  17.3 seems stable wrt to my problems.

I've been experience locks every few hours!
I also noticed /var/log/messages being spammed with errors:

the same item/ID, consider running "tracker-extract" in the terminal with

I have no need for tracker, so I uninstalled it.
So far, no lock (but maybe haven't waited long enough yet)

Ditto, though it would be nice to be able to mark a specific kernel as
non-removable, rather than just relying on the window not overflowing.

With kernel 4.17.5 -> system hangs
With kernel 4.17.3 -> no problem.

That said, I wonder: how old is my F28 box, and how many upgrades has

I did a clean install and /etc/yum/ ONLY has protected.d

All the repo files are still in /etc/yum.repo.d

I always do a clean install, but tend to copy too many . directories

In my case this is not associated with USB3. I backup to a local NAS
and only at night. My hangs were during normal daytime use. I did
notice a page fault error in one of the logs (mentioned in the links in
 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1598462#c30) so there may
be more than one trigger.

Note that I am running F27.

I've just retried the backup this morning and it stopped again during
the backup so that may be linked.
I was backuping my hard drive + some data from a remote computer to a
USB3 drive plugged on a USB-C adapter where I also have the ethernet
plugged in.

The backup program is rsnapshot.

I will retry with the drive plugged in directly to a USB3 port of the computer.

I never saw this problem with 4.17.4.  Since I upgraded to 4.17.5 I've
seen it happen 3 times.  In all the cases as far as I can tell the
system was idle.  I wasn't even in front of the computer when it
happened.  I have 2 systems running 4.17.5 and the problem has occurred
on only one of those systems, my laptop.

in the last two mornings.  Last night, there was an unexplained reboot
just before 5:00, with subsequent hang sometime later (I found the
situation at 8:45.)

This started with kernel-4.17.4-200.fc28.x86_64, but .5 (which came
out
just a day later) doesn't seem to have changed it.  I've booted
back to

the dot-three version.

I too have been having hangs that require a power cycle. I've dropped
back from kernel 4.17.5 to 4.17.4 to see if it's a kernel update issue.

I've had hangs with 4.17.4 and 4.17.5, but not with 4.17.3. I use
QEMU/KVM and the hangs seemed to be triggered by that, though there's
nothing in the logs.

I was running QEMU at the time of the hang.

No QEMU/KVM here.

Hi,

Similar issues here, started since kernel-4.17.4.

Don't know how to reproduce this problem.
It happened under different situations (e.g., when running a backup
program or when watching a live video)

I was running 4.17.4 (updated to it on friday) when I hung.

Where do I set how many kernels to keep?  If I have to fall back to
17.3, I am going to have more than 3 available...

thanks

System hung over night

2018-07-15 Thread Robert Moskowitz
When I woke up this morning  at 5:30 to head to the airport, I heard my
system fan going at full speed.  I tried to log in to the locked system,
but no response.  I had to power cycle.  Looking back in messages, the
last messages were right after 4am:

And then nothing until the restart.  Any recommendations on where to dig
to guess at what caused this?

Last night I had done an update and had rebooted the system, so it was a
fresh boot, but with all my processes running.
