First of all, sorry for the inconveniences caused. We wanted to release a
maintenance release fixing the critical bugs in one-4.0 ASAP, and we
decided to postpone this bug for the next release since it requires to
define a fixed width for each column and include a tooltip to show the
hidden text, and of course test it all over the sunstone view.

As a workaround you can apply the following patch that will fix the problem
in the settings dialog and in most of the sunstone tables using custom
attrs.

Hope this helps

Tested - it works, but not ideally. Long values are cut and difficult to
manage (probably only copy/paste useful).

Re: [one-users] fibre channel datastore

2013-05-22 Thread Denis J. Cirulis
Hello Jaime,
thanks for your tips on configuring the LVM datastore. I gone through all
the steps and I have configured datastore. Next problem is that I can not
understand why my virtual machines are not being provisioned to this new
datastore.

Thanks.

No. You don't need to (you could, but there's really no point).

 2. Which driver should I use on compute nodes ?

 The LVM drivers.

 3. Will my virtual machines be persistent during infrastructure reboots ?

 Yes.

The similar setup you have described is exactly what you want to replicate
with OpenNebula. You need the LVM drivers for this. I have just added a
diagram to the LVM guide [1] to show you exactly the setup you need. The
idea is to export the same LUN to all the OpenNebula nodes and create a
cLVM* on top of it. OpenNebula will speak to just one of the nodes of that
cluster ($HOST parameter in the Datastore template). If the FC
configuration is persistent, and the cLVM configuration is also persistent,
then your VMs will persist during reboots.

Note that the underlying storage doesn't affect OpenNebula at all, you
could do this with FC, iSCSI, or even a NAS, as long as you export the same
block device to all the hosts (are configure it to persist after reboots).

By the way, I strongly recommend reading this article, written by the
people at MTA SZTAKI, explaining many things about LVM deployment. You will
find a lot of hints, best practices and troubleshooting tips in there.

 * Maybe you don't need cLVM, after reading the article [2] you will be
able to understand the pros and cons of using it.

I already had similar setup but with plain libvirt and kvm, the concept
was to use one lun per datastore from fc storage using fc hba and switch,
which was advertised to compute nodes as lvm vg, then each virtual machine
had 1+n logical volumes from this vg as its hard drive. Backup was
performed via lvm snapshot and dd/rsync. There was a possibility to migrate
storage from one node to another without vm downtime using virsh block-copy
 --live.

What are the correct steps to achieve the same functionality on
 opennebula 4.0 ?
I'm running CentOS 6.4 both on opennebula server and compute nodes.

 Thanks in advance!

[one-users] Setting CPU overcommit globally

2013-05-22 Thread Sharuzzaman Ahmat Raslan
Hi all,

In our environment, we need to overcommit the CPU in every host.

We have 6 host running KVM, on Ubuntu 12.04

Our Opennebula is 3.8.1

Previous discussion about CPU overcommit is suggesting that I have to put
CPU=0.5 and VCPU=2 to get 1 real CPU overcommit as 2 CPU, to each VM
template.

Is there any way that I can just set it once, and when I launch/relaunch a
VM, it will be automatically CPU overcommit, without having to change the
VM template?

Thanks.

[one-users] RFC: Feature idea - Image preparation

2013-05-22 Thread Jon
Hello All,

Before I was using Open Nebula, my general virtual machine workflow was as
follows:

1) Install OS to qcow image, this creates an image between 500-1500MB
2) Unconfigure virtual machine, e.g. remove any system specific config:
udev rules, user accounts, ssh host keys, SELinux relabel etc.
3) Zero out the file system by creating a large file of all zeros, e.g.:
dd if=/dev/zero of=./delme; rm delme
4) Compress and (qemu-img reclaims unused space while compressing so the
sparsify is implied) the image, to create a master image (I've heard
this referred to as a golden image)
this typically results in an image between 300-500MB,
e.g. qemu-img convert -c -f qcow2 master.qcow2 -O qcow2
master.compressed.qcow2
5) Create a slave copy on write image off the master, e.g.: qemu-img
create -b ../master/master.compressed.qcow2 -f qcow2 ./virtualmachine.qcow2
This results in all of the changes being written to
./virtualmachine.qcow2

Fortunately, virt-sysprep and virt-sparsify handle steps 2 and 3 and the
sparcify part of step 4 more or less mindlessly.
qemu-img is still required (as far as I know) to compress the image, but
there is no longer a need to be in the vm to zero out the image,
so this whole process can be automated through a management layer like
OpenNebula.

I would like to automate this work flow through OpenNebula. I think it
would be extremely useful to be able to prepare and finalize a virtual
machine from OpenNebula.
Finalizing an image in this manner allows for maximization of disk space as
well as use as a master or golden image.
In my mind, I think it makes sense to use the least amount of space for the
common filesystem pieces.

Basically, when I create a new image in OpenNebula, I create a template
with the iso and a blank persistent datablock, then instantiate the vm,
install the iso,
shutdown the vm, and flip the image to a nonpersistent OS.

What I am proposing is a feature that would add an additional step that
would allow a user to finalize the vm by virt-syspreping,
virt-sparsifying,
and compressing the image, to maximize space usage.

-- My goal is to have a cli command, e.g.: `onevm finalize 38` or `onevm
finilize ubuntu-server-13.04` as well as an option in Sunstone to finalize
the image.
It would effectively finalize and clone the vm so, if necessary, the
original can still be modified and finalized again.

Does any one have any other ideas, thoughts, comments, or suggestions for
an image finalization function? Is there anything I'm not thinking about
that I should be?

As far as development of the feature is concerned, where would I create
this feature for a commandline function, can you point me at some useful
documentation for developing this kind of feature?
I'm not ready to tackle the sunstone piece of this yet I don't think, so I
think my focus will be on the command line function for now.

Thanks for your input,
Jon A
