Re: [one-users] Adding an external VM to Open Nebula

2014-02-23 Thread Poul Kristensen
Hi!

When will this be supported? I think it is quite relevant!

I have a lot of vm's too(e.g. Redhat,Debian,Ubuntu), which I would
like to bring into OpenNebula control. I know this is possible in
Vmware(import) just like it is possible to export vm'sd in Vmware
although you ! use Vmware's *.vmdk files directly with the KVM
hypervisor.

Poul from DK

 Hi All

I am wondering if there are such functionalities in opennebula:

 1) backup a virtual machine without shutting it down (usually, do a
snapshoot and then back it up)
 2) as previous, but possibly storing it in a zipped file, I mean if the
virtual HD is empty (all ZERO) why should I keep 120GB of ZEROs? :)
 3) incremental backup
 4) live cloning (as before, just do it without stopping it)
 5) virtual machine replication: what happens if one node goes down ? is
there something similiar to vmotion or I should afford to underlaying layer
 to have the vmotion capabilities?

 Thank you

 Hi,

We have recently created package repositories for CentOS 6, Ubuntu
12.04/13.04, Debian 7 and openSUSE 12.3. You have more information on
 how to setup them at:

 http://blog.opennebula.org/?p=4992

We will maintain those repositories updated with the latest stable release.

As a side note we are happy to announce an OpenNebula tutorial that
will be held the day before the OpenNebulaConf. It comes free for the
conference attendees so plan your trip with that in mind.

Poul

2012/7/20 Javier Fontan jfon...@opennebula.org

 Hello,

The drivers changed quite a bit from 3.2 to 3.4. Moreover the way
images are managed are very different with the inclusion of the
datastores. We still have to change the drivers to make them
 compatible with the new versions.

If you want to take a look to the tm drivers they are heavily based on
the shared driver. The clone scripts is modified so the destination
path is rewritten with the SMB share path:

   DST_PATH=${DST_PATH/$ONE_LOCAL_VAR/$SMB_MOUNT}

Also the destination disk have the extension .vhd added to make hyperv
recognize the files as images, for example:

   exec_and_log cp -r $SRC_PATH $DST_PATH.vhd

Re: [one-users] Passwordless ssh between VM's?

Setup a Kerberos server and use tickets. You do not need to arrange
private/public keys on every server (host/vm's).

   Hello everyone,

I'm looking for the most convenient setting to be able to passwordlessly
ssh between the VM's created by OpenNebula. I've noticed that the settings
which provide passwordless ssh from the Front-end (or Hosts) into VM's do
not deal with this, the system is still asking for a password if I want to
ssh from VM into VM. So, did I do something wrong, and in theory, the exact
same steps would need to be followed in case of VM's too, or is there some
 trick?

To enable password less communication between VMs you need top create a
SSH key for a user (root?) that will be in all you VMs.
You should also disable in ssh_config the know_hosts feature (or redirect
 it to /dev/null).

For SSH there are multiple means. You create a VM with a SSH key inside,
the drawback is the SSH key is the same for all VMs e.g. all users, this is
not secure but for test only it would fit.
At boot time you load the ssh key for a file set in CONTEXT template, with
a key dedicated per user. Or, still at boot time, you trigger a server (you
made) to get a SSH key from the VM ip.

in which GRID-like services (see below) could be implemented inside an
  OpenNebula-based Cloud. Basically, and architecturally-speaking, I think
I would need a PaaS layer above my existing IaaS layer.

I am interested in the following tasks:

*job distribution among a set of dynamically created (or, as a start,
  fixed) VM's, initiated by a master-VM
  * job execution on the worker-VM's and, more importantly, execution
monitoring of these jobs by the master-VM
  * results gathering on the master-VM

I have briefly looked though Hadoop, which uses MapReduce, but, having
no experience with it, I am not sure whether if it is the best tool to
use for such a use-case, and also, I don't know if it could be at all
used in my environment. So, my fundamental question is the following:
which is the best way to start on, a way that would lead to satisfying
  my above-mentioned 3 necessities?
Is Hadoop perfectly compatible with OpenNebula, and could be used for
such purposes, or are there other and more fitting solutions or tools to
use? Basically, all I'm asking is, what is the most appropriate way for
obtaining these basic GRID-computing functionalities on a Platform
  constructed above the Infrastructure?
Hadoop will fit, but Hadoop is mainly focused on map/reduce jobs, and
 use of HDFS storage.

There is no issue at setting up Hadoop on top of Open Nebula, I did
it. IT is up to you to configure your images to setup Hadoop
 automatically (with ssh password-less communication).

What you refer too would be more likely a really grid system like Torque
ou Sun Grid Engine. Those can also be put above Open Nebula (or other
cloud system). But, same thing, you need to create images that will
automatically set them up (I did too with Torque)

Any suggestions, thoughts, and hints are extremely welcome, since this
is a rather important and urgent matter for me.

  Thank you,
  Lehel.

Hi Carlos.

Opennebula created the DB. I usually work with mysql or postgresql.
Resently started with sqlite3. Trying sqlite or sqlite3 does not give an API
for sql commands. I have not read what sort of DB is used by
opennebula if not sqlite(3) or mysql. I am not aware of a sqlite

the files indicate the existence of sqlite(3).

Re: [one-users] Installation of OpenNebula 3.2 on Ubuntu OS

2012-02-03 Thread Poul Kristensen
Hi,

How could this happen? A column is missing.

SQL command was: SELECT oid, body FROM host_pool WHERE state != 4
ORDER BY last_mon_time ASC LIMIT 15, error: no such column: body

from the oned.log

Thanks

Poul

 Hi,

 Thanks to for your suggestions.
I chose the compiled version of OpenNebula3.2

The database used is not a mysql database  but some onedb file I
think, which seems to hidden in the application layer. It is not a
separate database. I want to dump this  onedb file into a ascii file
and then manually create a mysql data using the dumped onedb file
 information.
When done that I want to change OpenNebula3.2 to use the new mysql database.
Is this possible? if so I how do I dump the onedb file to ascii file?.

 Thanks

 Poul

 Hi,

I have done an installation of OpenNebula 3.2 on Ubuntu Server 11.04

I used [1] ans [2] and everything works fine.

Would someone suggest the easiest way to install OpenNebula 3.2 to Ubuntu?

Should OS be Ubuntu server version 10.04(with the included packages or
are the packages to old?)  or Ubuntu server version 11.10?

Should it be compiled and if so how can I be sure that all packages
are installed needed to get a succesfull compilation in first try?

 Thanks

Re: [one-users] LDAP 2.9.85 authentication module

2012-01-24 Thread Poul Kristensen
Sorry for interrupting, but what is opennebula authenticating againts?

In my understanding authentications are normally done against LDAP as
a part of AD (active directory) or against some other ldap server(DNS) to have
some centralized authentication. It could be Deffnet too.
It seems that opennebula is authenticating against a local ldap server?
Is that correct? Is it possible to authenticate againts AD?

Thanks

Poul

2012/1/24 Javier Fontan jfon...@opennebula.org:
That is indeed a bug. Anyway, now the addons come with the standard
OpenNebula distribution (since 3.2) and this is not a problem anymore.
OpenNebula install script does not mess with this file permissions.

 Thanks anyway for reporting.

directory, but it may need to be fixed in the install script itself.

Re: [one-users] Mixed mode UBUNTU+ RH KVM

2011-12-14 Thread Poul Kristensen
Hello Nikolay

Just a little correction concerning Linux distros. There is no ES/AS
in RH version 6.0 - just RH 6.0 32/64 bit.

I think ES/AS ended with RH version 4.0. It was a concern of RAM
limitations of 16GB in RH ES 4.0.

BTW:
I would not recommend your setup / IT-softwareinfrastructure as you
have to update some time in future and
might meet problems with versions.

Furthermore you have to pay for updates from Redhat. Ubuntu is free
unless you need support.

Cheers

Poul

 Hello folks .,

 Quick question ..

If it possible to use as FrontEnd based on Ubuntu 11.04 and 2 Cluster
Nodes on RH ES 6.0 as KVM nodes?

 Thank a lot
 Nikolay

SSH is used to communicate with the nodes in order to either transfer the VM
image, if SSH Transfer Manager is being used of course, or to gather status
information about the load/health of the node.

If you are using NFS as storage backend the nodes must have a compatible NFS
client in order to mount the shares.

libvirt is setup on the nodes in order to start/stop/deploy VMs on top of
 KVM.

SSH, NFS are protocols and libvirt is a standard library, so your mix should
work. I'm not trying to be condescending or something, just that I'm
approaching your question using the mentioned logic. The docs don't
 specifically talk about mixing distributions.

 Enjoy life,
