I didn't install double. The one package was the version on the FC17 box
and the other was FC18 box.

[Users] Ceph RBD

2013-05-30 Thread Alex T
Just wondering if there is any possibility of adding support for Ceph's
RBD, I understand there are means of simply mounting an RBD with glusterfs,
but for performance and simplicity adding support for creating and adding
RBD's to VM's would be nice... from my experience on ubuntu 12.04 Qemu
1.4.2 is a strong recommendation.

I just don't want to switch to opennebula (although probably the easiest
transition from ovirt) or proxmox, kind of getting hooked on the ovirt, but
it's lack of support for ceph maybe for it's direct competition with
gluster is imposing on its adoption...

Just some other thoughts for the developer's who seem to be few and far
between (or at least according to bugzilla), providing support for
debian/arch/gentoo (although they already have a little community going), I
think would get alot more involvement..

Also getting the website fixed up should be asap, I mean, it is very hard
to navigate, broken links, dead pages, there are tons of pages that are
outdated, some that are up to date but are very difficult to navigate
too... I mean you can really just copy and paste the RHEV admin manual and
call it the ovirt manual, and get alot more interest, if you try and go to
the ovirt admin manual now its just a dead page

There are from what I remember 1800+ bugs and it seems that only a few
developer's are actively working on them, I think that creating some better
video's, with better audio showing just how simple it is to create a
storage domain, create gluster volumes, iscsi domains etc.. would greatly
enhance support, because lets face it, ovirt makes managing your
infrastructure easy and intuitive... the more user's the bigger the
community the faster the development, please port all the documentation
possible from RH to Ovirt and fix up all the broken and dead links on the
website so people don't think that Ovirt is a dead project, advertise all
the supporter's intel, ibm, netapp whoever... if you get support in for
Ceph, you beat out Citrix Vmware, Microsoft, Oracle all in one punch,
everyone is looking at Ceph, ovirt is the replacement for microsofts
virtual machine manager which requires a ton of things to get functional
and the fact that hyper-v is a piece of crap, citrix xenserver at this
level would cost around $5K per server with xendesktop and their cloud
portal or whatever it's called would be over 10-20K+, VMware would be
around 40-50K depending how many server's but just the storage domain
option I believe is 35K, oracle I think is a little cheaper at about 3.5K
per server, but not so many features... I mean ovirt has so much to offer,
just need to get the word out there!

I also think getting openvswitch implemented would also be a great addition
to both security and functionality.

Anyways, great job so far guy's, thank you very much for this software,

As far as I know all ovirt instances expose one through http,
http://www.ovirt.org/How_to_Connect_to_SPICE_Console_Without_Portal has one

I'm using the i686 iso provided for the test day.
I can see that

[root@localhost ~]# rpm -q virt-viewer
virt-viewer-0.5.5-1.fc19.i686

[root@localhost ~]# rpm -qR virt-viewer | grep ovirt
[root@localhost ~]# echo $?
1

I find that inside this iso I also have thsi package installed
[root@localhost ~]# rpm -q libgovirt
libgovirt-0.0.3-2.fc19.i686

Donna if it is what you referred to as a dependency for virt-viewer though...

Hello I have no access to irc today but before opening a bugzilla,
this is what I get for oVirt connection test using the i686 iso and
running

remote-viewer --debug ovirt://10.4.4.60/ostack

the ip of the client is 10.4.4.54 and it is a vm itself of the oVirt
infra, run by iso image.
oVirt is 3.2.2 installed on fedora 18

[root@localhost ~]# remote-viewer --debug ovirt://10.4.4.60/ostack
(remote-viewer:1969): remote-viewer-DEBUG: Couldn't load
configuration: No such file or directory
(remote-viewer:1969): remote-viewer-DEBUG: Insert window 0 0x85a7800
(remote-viewer:1969): remote-viewer-DEBUG: fullscreen display 0: 0
(remote-viewer:1969): remote-viewer-DEBUG: fullscreen display 0: 0
(remote-viewer:1969): remote-viewer-DEBUG: Opening display to
ovirt://10.4.4.60/ostack
(remote-viewer:1969): remote-viewer-DEBUG: Guest
ovirt://10.4.4.60/ostack has unsupported ovirt display type
(remote-viewer:1969): remote-viewer-DEBUG: Disposing window 0x85a7800

(remote-viewer:1969): remote-viewer-DEBUG: Set connect info:
(null),(null),(null),-1,(null),(null),(null),0

from a graphic point of view I get
- a window with
Unknown graphic type for the guest ovirt://10.4.4.60/ostack
press OK and I get
- a window with
Couldn't create a session for this type: ovirt
and remote-viewer exits.

on the system that live runs on iso and where Itry to run remote-viewer:
[root@localhost ~]# rpm -qa|egrep "ovirt|spice"
spice-xpi-2.8-3.fc19.i686
spice-gtk3-0.19-1.fc19.i686
spice-glib-0.19-1.fc19.i686
libgovirt-0.0.3-2.fc19.i686
spice-vdagent-0.14.0-2.fc19.i686
spice-html5-0.1.2-2.fc19.noarch
spice-server-0.12.2-5.fc19.i686

ostack is a CentOS 6.4 VM configured with spice display

Fedora-18 and Fedora-17 remote-viewer should work the same. Notice
that usb devices are only automagically passed-through if remote-viewer
has the keyboard focus when the device gets plugged in!

Also HID devices are excluded from automatic redirection.

Any way, I think another solution for dedup is FreeNAS using ZFS.

FreeNAS is just FreeBSD with a fancy web-ui ontop, so it´s neither more or less
of ZFS than you would have otherwise, And regarding dedup in ZFS; Just don´t,
it´s not worth it! It´s said that it may increase performance when you have a
very suitable usecase, e.g. everything exactly the same over and over. What´s
not said is that scrubbing and resilvering slows down to a snail (from hundreds
of MB/s, or GB if your system is large enough, down to less than 10), just from
dedup. Also deleting snapshots of datasets that have(or have had) dedup on can
kill the entire system, and when I say kill, I mean really fubar. Been there,
regretted that... Now, compression on the other hand, you get basically for
free and gives decent savings, I highly recommend that.

Everything depends on your needs, design planning. Maybe then sharing
disk would be better to share via NFS/iscsi. Of course if you have many
VMs each of them is different you will fail. But if you have mostly
homogeneous environment you can think about this approach. Sure you have
to have plan for upgrading "base" "static" shared OS data, you have to
have plan how to install additional software (different destination
than /usr or /usr/local)... If you already have your own build host
which builds for you OS packages and you have already your own plan for
deployment, you have done first steps. If you depend on upgrading each
machine separately from Internet, then first you should plan your
environment, configuration management etc.

Well, in many times people do not do any planning, they just think some
good technology would save their "poor" design.
