Well maybe begin yourself as a good example

I'm a little amazed you want to know from

a good way to start would maybe

If no one else is willing to start

But this will most likely be in my spare

Could you explain what you have done, and what do you need promiscuouity
for? oVirt has port mirroring that allows to mirror ip traffic from
one vm network to another.

oVirt engine is sending me 2 emails every 10 minutes with the following
subjects:
- ovirt-hosted-engine state transition EngineDown-EngineStart
- ovirt-hosted-engine state transition EngineStart-EngineUp

In oVirt webadmin I can see the following message:
VM HostedEngine is down. Exit message: internal error Failed to acquire
lock: error -243.

These messages are really annoying as oVirt isn't doing anything with
hosted engine - I have an uptime of 9 days in my engine vm.

So my questions are now:
Is it intended to send out these messages and detect that ovirt engine
is down (which is false anyway), but not to restart the vm?

How can I disable notifications? I'm planning to write a Nagios plugin
which parses the output of hosted-engine --vm-status and only Nagios
should notify me, not hosted-engine script.

Is is possible or planned to make the whole ha feature optional? I
really really really hate cluster software as it causes more troubles
then standalone machines and in my case the hosted-engine ha feature
really causes troubles (and I didn't had a hardware or network outage
yet only issues with hosted-engine ha agent). I don't need any ha
feature for hosted engine. I just want to run engine virtualized on
oVirt and if engine vm fails (e.g. because of issues with a host) I'll
restart it on another node.

Hi, you can:
1. edit /etc/ovirt-hosted-engine-ha/{agent,broker}-log.conf and tweak
the logger as you like
2. or kill ovirt-ha-broker ovirt-ha-agent services

- yes, it might cause some problems if you set up another host for

don't have the agent running anywhere or you don't need to migrate the

Re: [ovirt-users] hosted engine health check issues

2014-04-17 Thread Martin Sivak
Hi,

  How can I disable notifications?

The notification is configured in /etc/ovirt-hosted-engine-ha/broker.conf
section notification.
The email is sent when the key state_transition exists and the string
OldState-NewState contains the (case insensitive) regexp from the value.

Is it intended to send out these messages and detect that ovirt engine
is down (which is false anyway), but not to restart the vm?

Forget about emails for now and check the
/var/log/ovirt-hosted-engine-ha/agent.log and broker.log (and attach them as
well btw).

oVirt hosts think that hosted engine is down because it seems that hosts
can't write to hosted-engine.lockspace due to glusterfs issues (or at
  least I think so).

The hosts think so or can't really write there? The lockspace is managed by
sanlock and our HA daemons do not touch it at all. We only ask sanlock to get
make sure we have unique server id.

Is is possible or planned to make the whole ha feature optional?

Well the system won't perform any automatic actions if you put the hosted
engine to global maintenance and only start/stop/migrate the VM manually.
I would discourage you from stopping agent/broker, because the engine itself
has some logic based on the reporting.

Re: [ovirt-users] Connection hickups with Pfsense and Carp

2014-04-17 Thread Matt .
Hi Guys,

I'm not able to write a howto yet as we need to check how this is running
on high traffic and we are going soon. Than, we need to test some other
functions before I can actually write something down.

Because this is not all documented well indeed I'm in testmode and doing
some @ life system as reallife environments are always coming with other
things than your prefec test.

I cannot say I needed promiscuouity, I did some things you would normally
do on pfsense which fixed that part. Some old message you really need to
discard instead of clicking it away was confusing this test.

Has anyone had any success with cloud-init and templates with ovirt
3.4? So far, it seems to be able to configure things like networks
etc. But when it goes to do with passwords, it must be set again in
the run once or in the Initial Run even if Use already configured
 password is set.

Hi,
which version you're talking about?

Another thing, why is it only setup to change the root password? By
default cloud-init will block root, so nearly all images need to be
 modified ie.
 sed -i 's/disable_root: 1/disable_root: 0\nchpasswd: { expire: False
 }/g' /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg

yeah. this has been fixed recently

Otherwise, you'll login and it'll ask you to change your password.
Defeats the purpose of setting it through cloud-init? I'm also not
being able to just set an SSH key, it insists a password otherwise the
 key won't get uploaded.

hm, not sure, Shahar?

Finally, templates seem to be lacking validation. Where Initial Run
and Run Once will give the red box if you have the wrong syntax
 while templates don't care.

syntax of what?

machines generated from tab VM are described as clone/dependent

machines generated from tab POOL are described as thin/independent

yeah, sort of.

NFS is wipe_after_delete=true always.
so delete of snapshot will merge the data to upper level image + zero in
on the data which is why this is taking a long time.

so we can easily follow the task from start to end.

however, I did grep for the task id in the logs you just attached and

I'm adding Elad to try and see if he can reproduce ERROR populated by

Well,

there is already beta documentation for rhev 3.4 at:
https://access.redhat.com/site/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Virtualization/

So I guess the answer will be ovirt 3.4.x

but someone from RH can answer this better, I'm sure.
Many people will be at redhat summit I guess, so it
might take some time.

Subject: [ovirt-users] Question about power user and public template

   Hi,

Currently I have run into a problem about permissions when creating vm
  from
   template.

Say if non admin user A in power user portal want to create vm from
  template
C created by non admin user B, I found out that A need to have both power
user role and userbasedtemplatevm role to make it work. If i only assign
userbasedtemplatevm to C, A can only view the template in power user
  portal
but not able to create vm from it.

I'd say the problem is that the template has some disks and as a
  UserTemplateBasedVm only you are
not allowed to Access Image Storage Domains?

Thanks for pointing that out, I really didn't think the disk has
 permissions too :)

Because PowerUserRole has more permissions than UserTemplateBasedVm, so I
think assigning PowerUserRole is enough to see the template in power user
portal. Based on this thought, I did the following two experiment:

 1. I assigned PowerUserRole to user A in Configure - System Permissions,
but after that I still cannot see template C in power user portal.
The above role assignment result in user A having PowerUserRole inherited
from System Permission, and based on [1], user A should have PowerUserRole
 on template C, right ?

yes, you should be able to verify this in the webadmin-template main
tab-permissions subtab

 2. Now based on 1 if I explicitly add PowerUserRole to user A on template
C, I can see template C and create vms from it.

but it should already be there. And also, since you have created the template
as public everyone should have the
UserTemplateBasedVm on it. You could verify this on the same subtab.

For my understanding, the above two role assignment should have the same
 result.

 Any ideas?

so, if you have a template on which everyone has UserTemplateBasedVm and a
user with PowerUserRole and you can not see it in the userportal,
it should be a bug. But for me it seems working on current upstream code...

 [1]:
 http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/engine-devel/2012-December/003229.html

For details about specific roles and what can be done by which role you
  can have a look at:
webadmin - Configure in top right corner - Roles side tab - pick a
  specific role - Edit button

So is this the expected behavior? I don't quite understand what
userbasedtemplatevm is used for. I noticed that making template C public
have the effect of assign userbasedtemplatevm to everyone, but that seems
not enough to let everyone use it.

   My engine version is 3.3.4.

Any ideas? thanks for any help!

hi, thanks for reply

I am investigating what is and how thin virtualization works

Do you know if HADOOP is indicated to work under thin environment ?
On Hadoop I will put large workloads and this thin virtualization
utilizes more resources than exists (shareable environment)
that is,
if I have a real physical necessity of 500gb for each hadoop host and my
Thin Virtualization has 2TB on NFS, I can have only 4 virtual machines
(500GB each), or less.

For this case I believe clone virtual machine is the right choice. But in
my environment it takes 1h30m to build one cloned virtual machine.

I created VMs by two ways :

  1) on tab virtual machines new vm template (centos_65_64bits)
1.1 configuration : I do not select stateless checkbox
1.2 this process takes a 1h30 to create each machine.

  2) on tab pools new vm template (centos_65_64bits)
  2.1 default configuration : stateless
2.2 Here I created 3 virtual machines at once
2.3 this process takes only one minute

On the tab virtual machines I can see all virtual machines.
Pooled machines have different icon image
  and description is different too:

machines generated from tab VM are described as clone/dependent
  - clone is a phisical copy?
machines generated from tab POOL are described as thin/independent
  - thin is a just a reference to template vm ? what is phisical? any
 configuration file?

 yeah, sort of.
just google thin provisioning in general:)

In practice, what is the difference between these machines ?

  http://www.ovirt.org/Features/PrestartedVm
Today there are 2 types of Vm pools:
• Manual - the Vm is supposed to be manually returned to the pool.
In practice, this is not really entirely supported.
• Automatic - once the user shuts down the Vm - it returns to the
 pool (stateless).

all vm created from pool are stateless ?

 the automatic pool, yes

 Thanks,
 michal

Need some quick help on this. I restarted one of my oVirt nodes and it
doesn't seem to go up after that. I have done some troubleshooting and
found out that the nfs-server service is not going up. Here's the error.

[ovirt-users] New VM from template, vm disk creation time very high

2014-04-17 Thread Steve Dainard
When I create a new vm from a template (centos 6, 20gig thin disk) it takes
close to 40 minutes to clone the disk image.

Are there any settings that control how much bandwidth the cloning process
can use, or how its prioritized? This is brutally slow, and although a
quick clone isn't needed often, occasionally when someone is asking for a
resource it would be nice to expedite the process.

Storage: Gluster replica 2 volume
Network: 10gig
Ovirt: 3.3.4, Centos 6.5

Thanks,

*Steve*

There are a few steps. Download the CA cert from your manager
https://ovirtaddress/ca.crt
Make sure it is trusted.
Make sure ovirt-webproxy-socket is installed and running.

Has anyone gotten the html5 spice console to work, and did you have to
do anything special other than enable it?  I've tried every browser

Is the ovirt manager also a VM host?

that wouldn't matter, the communication is between the host and SPICE client
only, engine is not involved.

 Hello Everyone,

I have ovirt 3.3 setup with around 15 VMs created in it. We have CentOS5 on
this VM. The users have problem accessing the VMs at times. While they are
working on console, it just gets hang. There is no response to the keyboard.
Have look at the resource usage during this time, CPU and RAM is normal.

The clients uses user portal to launch the VM from Firefox. Spice is used for
 remote viewing.

what spice client?

Thanks,
michal

Do anyone have come across this issue ? Looking forward for your help.
