Re: [ovirt-users] oVirt Engine Virtual Appliance for 3.5 is ready for testing [ISSUES]

2014-09-17 Thread Fabian Deutsch

- Original Message -
In addition, I've uploaded this image to the oVirt public glance repository,
under the name oVirt 3.5 Appliance - For testing purposes only (Fedora).
So, if you already have an oVirt environment, and you would like to play with
the new one using this appliance, all you need to do is import it as a
template, and create VMs from it.
 (see
 http://ovedou.blogspot.co.il/2014/03/importing-glance-images-as-ovirt.html
for details on how to do that).

Haven't tested this image yet, but I'm importing it as a template as we speak
 :-)

Hey,

I just discovered that the appliance has issues and not root password can be
set.
I'm working on this, please remove it from glance again (kudos for uploading it
so quick!) and expect an update later today.

Subject: [ovirt-users] oVirt Engine Virtual Appliance for 3.5 is ready for
  testing

  Hello!

The ready-to-use Engine appliance is now building again and should contain
the the latest and greatest 3.5rc2 packages.
That appliance can be used for testing hosted engine, as well as testing
  oVirt Engine 3.5 in general.

The ova (intended to be used with hosted engine setup) and the qcow2
(intended to be used for testing) images can be found here:
  http://jenkins.ovirt.org/view/All/job/ovirt-appliance_master_merged/

All relevant packages are pre-installed, but the appliance still needs to
  be
  configured.
To configure the appliance you need to run:

  $ engine-setup --offline --config-append=ovirt-engine-answers

inside the appliance after downloading it.

Please let us know if you have any issues.

  Greetings

There is a fix for that in 3.5...

It should work for you if the VM has no template and the VM is Optimized for

For example. I allow access to the engine portal over our WAN

do not have access to the real VM IP addresses.

Please note that the client is actually connecting to _host_ IP, not to

I don't remember if it is ok and works to set up the squid part on

In principle, there's no reason why it shouldn't work. ovirt-engine
friends don't care about squid and squid doesn't care about the rest of
the system as long as the machine has enough power/bandwidth to run
 both.

but I think it would be cleaner design to put it on another dedicated

Re: [ovirt-users] VM Network Interfaces - bad cluster network and VLAN assignment

2014-09-17 Thread David Jaša
Ahoj Jiří,

Are you sure that the networks are indeed wrong, for example that
guest's NIC with ...:11 MAC is plugged to br0 network and ...:ef NIC is
plugged to br1 network? If so that would be a serious bug. I thing
however that you just see guest OS NIC naming race conditions, maybe if
ovirt's NIC names would be prefixed with nic- instead of eth- by
default, such confusions wouldn't happen...

For some reference, bug [1] is implemented consistent NIC order in the
portal and [2] to be able to modify pci addresses as well (as they are
used by some OSs to base NIC naming on).

This is done by engine service itself

Re: [ovirt-users] [RFI] oVirt 3.6 Planning

2014-09-17 Thread Sven Kieske
Hi,

I think this question did not get answered so far and I think this is a
crucial point. While it's cool you can integrate ovirt with openstack
I don't think it should be necessary when you want certain features.

Because, like Daniel wrote: Why should I install ovirt if I need
multiple openstack components anyway? I could just go on and deploy
openstack and not use ovirt?

But I also have the same opinion as Daniel: openstack ist too big
to deploy for traditional vm workloads.

So it would be much appreciated if this questions could get answered.

not to use oVirt at all? ATM OpenStack seems to me like the literal

I''ll try to restart the whole thing ( engine plus 3 nodes) but , since it

Re: [ovirt-users] VM Network Interfaces - bad cluster network and VLAN assignment

2014-09-17 Thread J. Mikulec

Ahoj :)

After huge testing today :) I see it is problem just if I add NICs after
VM creation and automatically assigned MACs are 00:1a:4a:c4:e4:11 and
00:1a:4a:c4:e4:ef. In this case there is also desc alphabetical sorting
of nic (sorting by MAC?).

This problem is NOT when:

- NICs are added in time of VM creation (windows New Virtual Machine,
tab General)

- 1 NIC is added in time of VM creation and 1 added later
- when all NICs are added later and oVirt assign another MAC

J.

Dne 17.9.2014 11:16, David Jaša napsal(a):

For some reference, bug [1] is implemented consistent NIC order in the
portal and [2] to be able to modify pci addresses as well (as they are
used by some OSs to base NIC naming on).

nic0 - br1
nic1 - br0

So nics belongs to incorrect bridges and so incorrect VLANs. It does
oVirt totally unusable for me (we strictly use 0 network for public IPs
and 1 for intranet use) :(

With one NIC I not see this problem.

Yep - That is one of the things under test :)

The iso below includes hosted engine support, that means, Node contains a page
which you can use to start the hosted engine setup.

Please note that the appliance which is intended for hosted-engine
(ovirt-engine-appliance) is currently broken, but hosted-engine setup can be
run without using that appliance.
You just need to setup your own OS and oVirt.

[ovirt-users] [OVIRT-3.5-TEST-DAY-3] dwh and reports on separate host

2014-09-17 Thread Martin Sivak
Hi,

I installed fresh engine on CentOS 6.5 (inside a VM) and dwh + reports to other
CentOS 6.5 VM.

Except being a bit confused by the certificate signing step during the setup
all went well and I can see that the dwh service is running and I can access
the reports site.

I started in the afternoon, because I had to reinstall my hosts first, so I
might try poking around tomorrow as well. Also I do not have extra hosts atm,
but I hope to have my nested virtualization environment back tomorrow to
actually put some data to the reports.

We're still discussing whether to address that on engine/VDSM side.
Doesn't seem urgent, though, so I wouldn't consider that as a blocker.
We didn't see any change with regards to that, so I'm surprised it is a

If it's not a regression, please remove the keyword :-)

Well... the reporter claims it is... we haven't tested it yet due to other
 more urgent issues.

In particular, real-life installation should use much more thatn 1GiB of
swap space, so this problem is moot.

[ovirt-users] OVIRT-3.5-TEST-DAY-3: replace XML-rpc with JSON-rpc

2014-09-17 Thread Francesco Romani
Hi everyone

of this test day I played with the new JSON-rpc transport, which is enabled by
default.

I set up from scratch two hypervisors running on RHEL 6.5, while Engine was
running on F19.
I created everything from scratch and tested all the flows I known good enough,
including
less-then-common stuff.

The list includes creating storage domains, VMs, hotplug/unplug disks,
snapshots, migration,
hibernation and dehibernation.

On top of that, I prepared an environment to run more tests, that included
create 200 VMs,
started/stopped 100 of them to test.

I kept an eye on the logs other than Engine.

Everything I tried went OK, and logs look good to me.

I run in a few hiccups, which I mention for the sake of completeness:
- VDSM refused to start or run VMs initially: libvirt config included relics
from past
environment on the same box, not JSON-rpc fault. Fixed with new config and
(later) a reboot.
- Trying recovery, Engine took longer than expected to sync up with VDSM.
I have not hard data and feeling is not enough to file a BZ, so I didn't.
- Still trying recovery, one and just one time Engine had stale data from VDSM
(reported two
VMs as present which actually aren't). Not sure it was related to JSON-rpc,
can't reproduce,
  so not filed a BZ.

Since I need to continue profiling anyway (better late than never I guess), I
include
a couple of test to see if JSON-rpc makes any difference to JSON-rpc.
Results will be posted on de...@ovirt.org and/or on the oVirt wiki.

Some little things:

   nfsv4 support (http://www.ovirt.org/Features/NFSv4)

   libgfapi

   drbd support (http://www.ovirt.org/Features/DRBD)

Some concepts from IBM PowerHA look interesting:

I don't know if the term is correct but we'd like to be able to
group vm's together and create dependency's between them.
Something like, first start the database vm then the
authentication vm and last the webserver vm.

   /resource groups

//Resource groups/allow you to combine related resources into a
single logical entity for easier configuration and management.
The//PowerHA SystemMirror//software handles the resource group
as a unit, thus keeping the interdependent resources together on
one node and keeping them highly available./
   //

 * /Identifying the set of cluster resources that are essential
to the operation of an application, and combining those
   resources into a resource group./
 * /Defining the resource group policies and attributes that
   dictate howPowerHA SystemMirrormanages resources to
keep them highly available at different stages of cluster
   operation (startup, fallover and fallback)./

/By identifying resources and defining resource group policies,
   thePowerHA SystemMirrorsoftware makes numerous cluster
configurations possible, providing tremendous flexibility in
defining a cluster environment tailored to individual requirements.
   /

We would also like to be able to split a cluster between two
   racks or DC's
   /linked clusters/

/A linked cluster is ideal for situations where each site is
located at a different geographical location. Typically, the
sites are far enough apart so that they cannot conveniently
share a common storage area network (SAN). Each site must have
its own active repository disk, and any backup repositories.
Linked clusters always use unicast to communicate between sites.
Linked clusters are a useful part of high availability disaster
   recovery (HADR)./

We are currently developing a benchmarking system for ovirt and
test failover stuff by hand. Something like this would save
   people a lot of time
   /Cluster test tool/

/The Cluster Test Tool is a utility that lets you test
   aPowerHA® SystemMirror®cluster configuration to evaluate
how a cluster behaves under a set of specified circumstances,
such as when a node becomes inaccessible, a network becomes
inaccessible, a resource group moves from one node to another,
   and so forth./

/You can start the test, let it run unattended, and return later
to evaluate the results of your testing./

/If you want to run an automated suite of basic cluster tests
for topology and resource group management, you can run the
automated test suite from SMIT. If you are an
   experiencedPowerHA SystemMirror//administrator and want to
tailor cluster testing to your environment, you can also create
custom tests that can be run from SMIT./

/It is recommended to run the tool after you initially
configurePowerHA SystemMirrorand before you put your
cluster into a production environment; after you make cluster
configuration changes while the cluster is out of service; or at
regular intervals even though the cluster appears to be
   functioning well./

[ovirt-users] OVIRT-3.5-TEST-DAY-3: backup/restore and disaster recovery

2014-09-17 Thread Simone Tiraboschi
Hi,
today I had to test how to recover a broken system using backup/restore tool
[1] or disaster recovery procedure [2].

Unfortunately I really had a lot of troubles just trying to setup my test
environment so no good news on that side.

I was using two host: one for the engine, the other as an hypervisor.
Both with latest fedora 19 updates.

For a fault of mine I add oVirt 3.5 RC2 repository on the engine host but I
forgot to do the same on the second host and it generates a lot of problems.

I installed the ovirt engine, release 3.5 RC2, on the first host and from the
web admin UI I was trying to add the second host.

I discovered that using jsonrpc mode it doesn't check/enforce or at least
advice about cluster compatibility level failing silently. I opened a bug for
that [3].
Than I start using xmlrpc mode that suggested me to downgrade the cluster
compatibility mode to 3.3; I did that but it still failed adding my host
apparently due to SELinux or Gluster errors; I opened a bug also for that [4].

So I understood that I forgot to add oVirt 3.5 repo on the second host; I
opened a bug against host-deploy with install rpms but doesn't handle RPM
repos. On my opinion it would make the setup more user friendly or at least
more controllable for us [5].

So I added the yum repository and I tried again; I noticed that host-deploy
upgrades vdsm stuff but it wasn't enough to get 3.5 compatibility level so,
investigating it a bit, I noticed that host-deploy upgrades vdsm stuff but
completely ignores libvirt one generating a nonworking setup; I opened a bug
also for that [6].

At the end, after manually upgrade libvirt rpms I was able to add my host.

Than I briefly tested backup/restore and disaster recovery procedures which
seam to work as expected.

So, at the end, on my opinion we have still to work a bit more to make the
setup more user friendly.

Simone

[ovirt-users] OVIRT-3.5-TEST-DAY-3 - Monitoring Dashboard

2014-09-17 Thread Ravi Nori

Hi,

I tested Monitoring (UI Plugin) Dashboard (integrated with Nagios Monitoring)
and ran into several issues.
The nagios server installed smoothly and showed all the bricks and their
trends. I had several issues with
the plugin and have opened BZs.

1. BZ 1143018 Plugins are not refreshed on Webadmin reload
PluginDataManager seems to be ignoring symbolic links to files and
directories in
   /usr/share/ovirt-engine/ui-plugins

Had to manually copy the files and directories to the ui-plugins directory
to get
   the plugin to show.

2. BZ 1143041Plugin prompts for authentication

Once the plugin showed up navigating to the trends tab required me to
authenticate again

3. BZ 1143044Nagios plugin does not show trends

Once authenticated the trends tab does not show the images. Some issue with
file not found on the server
for a new Cluster C_34 I had created.

Thanks

Ravi

[ovirt-users] [OVIRT-3.5-TEST-DAY-3] backup/restore/dr + Node

2014-09-17 Thread Ryan Barry

I installed a fresh engine on CentOS 6.5, and 3.5 nodes on two nested VMs.

A significant portion of the day was spent testing basic Node
functionality to ensure we didn't have any more SELinux denials, install
problems on EFI, or other issues, after which I moved onto engine.

DR was simply tested by pulling the network cable in the middle of an
operation, disconnecting both nodes and waiting for storage arbitration
to succeed, and uncleanly terminating the VM running engine then restarting.

Backup and restore was tested with ovirt-engine-backup (which I haven't
used before, and is quite nice).

[ovirt-users] OVIRT-3.5-TEST-DAY-3 - hosted engine over iSCSI

2014-09-17 Thread Vered Volansky
On my first try to hosted-engine --deploy I used screen as suggested by this
command when using ssh.
Then it wasn't clear that the egnine's host FQDN should be in /etc/hosts .
Once over this issue with Toni's help, I went forward with the installation,
which ultimately failed.
Opened bugs:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1142707 - Hosted-engine --deploy
fails using screen with iscsi
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1143817 - Hosted Engine -
Instructions for FQDN are not clear enough

By my second try I was assigned a new iscsi lun, so I used this one for a fresh
start.
This installation just went on forever, until I bumped into a broken pipe.
Openned bz:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1143820 - Hosted-engine --deploy
with iscsi stuck

The third try was with the same target as the previous. Installation went
further this time but I got a message:
[ ERROR ] Failed to execute stage 'Closing up': Cannot set temporary password
for console connection. The VM may not have been created: please check VDSM logs
Opened bz:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1143830 - hosted-engine --deploy:
Failed to execute stage 'Closing up' with iscsi target

Regards,

Vered
