I think I already saw this issue related to jsonRPC.

Raul,
meanwhile can u please try to set the Host not to use json-RPC, and check if
that works for you.
do the following:
  maintain the Host -
  edit the Host -
  go to advanced parameters -
uncheck the checkbox of json -
after doing that, start the Host again, and try to attach the domain once
again.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

  Hi.

Thank you for looking into this. Does this only affect the import
  or
influences also the process of attaching storage domain to Data
  Center
  (you
can't attach iSCSI Storage Domain to FC DC and vice versa?)

 Hi Raul,

for now, the fix should include the ability to switch storage types
 only
through the import process, and not through the attach process.
I think that the import process might be enough because you can
 always
 remove
the Storage Domain and re-import it to the setup as another storage
 type.

  If I understand
correctly, the Data Center's storage type is set at the
  initialization
  time,
when the first storage domain is attached and you can't change it
afterwards. In previous versions you could clearly see the DC
  storage
  type,
  now it's not visible.

You are right, mixed type data

We're not so good in keeping up with deadlines - our recent 3.5 version

Can we instead break the heavier features to smaller phases, that are

Hey,

yep, I think this is a good idea to get control over the big features.

- fabian

with many of the features requiring way newer versions of some of the
components, I think we should plan for 3.6 cluster to require an .el7

(expecting even 7.1 to be out before we release oVirt 3.6).

so i want us to plan for:
  - oVirt 3.6 supports .el6 and .el7 hosts in 3.5 cluster (and for fedora
- fc20?)
  - oVirt 3.6 supports .el7 in 3.6 cluster (and for fedora - fc21?)

I guess you stumbled indeed over a bug:

this one isn't a bug - its supposed to be empty, so the first host added
will set it based on its cpu type.

question is probably specific to hosted engine flow though. sandro?

On hosted engine CPU emulation level is selected while running hosted-engine

CPU type on default cluster is then set based on the selected cpu type using

[ovirt-users] [SCALE][RFC] ksmd bound to one core

2014-11-04 Thread Sven Kieske
Hi,

currently ksmd is a single process
and is thus bound to one core.

This leads to some scaling problems such as:

If you got a lot of vms on one host with huge amounts
of ram you can observe that the cpu usage by ksmd
goes easily to 100%.

I wonder if ksmd could not be split up
in child/worker threads, thus enabling higher density
of vms on one host.

or can this just be tweaked by altering values in
/etc/ksmtuned.conf ?

What do you think?

  Hi,

if I get this correctly, you'd like to be notified when certain event
happens (VM created/deleted/etc.) and react upon that. I see multiple
  possible approaches here:

0, improve Engine extension API (refer to Alon Bar-Lev for details)
 - if extensions can be packaged as JARs and these JARs could include
web fragments [1] it would mean the possibility to deploy custom
servlets onto existing Engine instance (in context of webapp that
   processes extensions)
 - your custom Java servlet could query REST interface (or be notified
once something happens, but AFAIK we don't have that implemented yet)
and do whatever logic is needed
 - once I asked Alon about ^^ but never got response from him
 - IMHO this would be a nice way to deploy custom Java code on Engine

  [1] https://blogs.oracle.com/swchan/entry/servlet_3_0_web_fragment

  1, improve UI plugin API
 - add VirtualMachineDataLoaded event fired upon each refresh of
VM data in UI table (generalization - {Entity}DataLoaded)
 - this is similar to existing {Entity}SelectionChange events

relying on changes in the UI table is a bad idea:

 (1) potentially missing events:
the UI displays paginated data; if my VMs are sorted by name, and
I have 1000 VMs in my setup, and I just added a VM named z, it will
be added to the last page which is not displayed right now, so I
wouldn't even be aware that something was added.

 (2) potentially creating fake events:
changes in the displayed data in the UI can occur due to change in the
Search query; if I have 50 VMs in my setup, and I initially had the
Vms: search query, and now I change it to VMs: name = a*, which
results in displaying only 10 VMs, this may falsely hint on removal
of 40 VMs from the system.

Agreed, that was a bad idea :) UI data is constrained by things like
search query, pagination, sorting etc. Scratch my previous idea.

As mentioned before, notification of relevant events occuring in system
should be the way to go. Either Engine will provide mechanism to notify
other systems (i.e. email notifier) or other system will poll/listen-to
changes in Engine (i.e. via REST API).

Idea for consideration, if every change to oVirt system would be sent
to some event bus, we could easily implement different notification
mechanisms (like websocket in addition to email), and web apps living
in Engine EAR context could also register to that event bus (imagine
WebAdmin servlet that listens for changes and pushes them to clients).

2, write UI plugin that uses oVirtJS to periodically check VM events

not sure if this is referring to VM-related events in the code (e.g.
hooking to the click on OK within the New VM / Remove VM dialog,
or hooking to the Success callback of the action response, or
something similar), or to the VM-related Events (i.e. the ones that
are displayed in the GUI within the Events main-tab / bottom section).
If the former: can be done, I assume, though not sure how complex it
would be to implement the infrastructure for that.
If the latter: this will catch actions that were performed either
via the GUI or outside the GUI; in this case, it would probably be
better to use an Engine extension API (solution 0 above) rather
than a UI plugin, since it will be more reliable, will be active
even when the GUI is not in use, etc.

It was meant simply as polling Engine via oVirtJS / REST API.

But then again, any UI plugin-based solution has the drawback that
web GUI must be active (open) in order for plugin to be active.

The disadvantage of 1, and 2, is that WebAdmin GUI must be open.
In any case, if you'd like to explore the possibility of doing this
via UI plugin, I'm here to help.

Anyway, the only way to accomplish that via UI plugins at the moment is
   via
adding a new action menu item, that in the background deleted the VM,
   and
   reports to Foreman.
I would be nice to have a hook for different UI action items, but it
   isn't
   available at the moment.
There are plenty code samples for UI plugins, most of them available at:
   http://www.ovirt.org/Features/UIPlugins

I must say that I'm not sure webhooks are the right

Please allow me to step in as someone who worked on the extensions API as
 well,
There are more missing bits here.
You are referring to the webapp side, but this is not enough.
We have also the engine side which has to become more pluggable.

Agreed. For me, the webapp side is really an interesting option, since it
would mean that 3rd parties could write custom code that would consume our
existing Java/Engine services (assuming these could be exposed across WARs).

In other words, plug custom Java code into Engine (inside-product
integration),
as opposed to typical scenario where 3rd party system uses Engine REST interface
(outside-product integration).

In addition, we will probably need to handle all kinds of issues that rise
from our singletons at engine - class loading might be an issue here, no?

Hm, Java class loaders have hierarchy, so if we put shared Java services
(ideally exposed and injectable as CDI beans) into class loader above specific
webapp (WAR) class loaders, it wouldn't be a problem. But I can be wrong here.

You don't want the X-ton (doubleton, tripleton, etc..) phenomena in your
setup - you don't want for example X instances of AsyncTaskManager.
I think that in general we should strive to turn engine into way more
pluggable/modular than it is now, imagine an engine microkernel (for those
of you who did not hear the term microkernel, I am referring you to jboss
architecture) - we should have a thin microkernel and the rest of the code
should be pluggable, using the extension API (and perhaps web fragments as
 well).
 What do you think?

Great ideas :)

[ovirt-users] IPv6 configuration through custom network properties and vdsm-hook-ipv6

2014-11-04 Thread Ondřej Svoboda
Hi all,

let us invite you to try out the latest addition to VDSM hooks: simple IPv6
configuration with oVirt's custom network properties :-)
In oVirt GUI you can now control 4 properties understood by VDSM's new IPv6
hook:
  ipv6addr, ipv6gateway (IPv6 addresses)
ipv6autoconf, dhcpv6 (booleans; use '1' or 'true' to enable them)

You will need oVirt 3.5 and VDSM = 4.16.7 and vdsm-hook-ipv6.
Define the new properties in oVirt engine as follows (do not omit
;ethtool_opts=.* if you are using it):

PROPERTIES='ipv6addr=.*;ipv6gateway=.*;ipv6autoconf=.*;dhcpv6=.*'
engine-config -s UserDefinedNetworkCustomProperties=$PROPERTIES --cver='3.5'

You can install the hook from oVirt's nightly build (also for el7, fc20...):
http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/ovirt-master-snapshot/rpm/el6/noarch/

After you restart the ovirt-engine service you are welcome to test configuring
the new custom properties in Edit Network dialog.
Please note that there is little functionality available (e.g. no migration)
apart from the basic configuration but we are working to make IPv6 in oVirt a
reality.
Recently, we tested manual IPv6 fencing, which was one of our goals on
http://www.ovirt.org/Features/IPv6_support. We will update the feature page
next week.

We are interested in your feedback. Stay tuned!

Cheers,
Ondra Svoboda

PS:
If you are building VDSM from Git, your packages (namely the vdsm package
required by the hook) are versioned as 4.16.0-nnn-gitid, which does not satisfy
the 4.16.7 requirement.
Please run 'git tag v4.16.7-fake' in your Git repository so the next time you
'make rpm' you get compatible packages.

   Hi,

if I get this correctly, you'd like to be notified when certain event
happens (VM created/deleted/etc.) and react upon that.

  - your custom Java servlet could query REST interface (or be notified
once something happens, but AFAIK we don't have that implemented
yet)
and do whatever logic is needed

This can/should be done through the notification service,
currently it supports email snmp traps ... but it could be extended (very
easily)

[ovirt-users] Cancelling a running task

2014-11-04 Thread Daniel Lang
I am creating a VM and the copy from template operation has gone haywire
causing significant performance issues on the host server. I’d like to cancel
the copying image action (it’s been running ~3hours on a 3GB disk image copy)
but I cannot find anything in the web UI to cancel a task. Is there a command
line tool to cancel the running task?

The oVirt version is 3.4 and vdsm version 4.14.

Thanks for any advice or links to documentation/man pages.

OVF_STOREs are images that contain the meta-data of VMs and Disks
that reside on that data-domain. This meta-data is used in case
the data-domain is imported/exported to/from a different data-

its the other way around - the cli/shell commands are using the engine

if your solution is html/javascript based, i think using ovirt.js (which

   Hi.

I have managed to get my oVirt node running using oVirt Node Hypervisor
3.1.0_master-20140707.0. I hope this is not causing following issue, but
this Is the only way for me to test 3.5.

When I try to import existing FC storage domain I get errors on Engine
   (see
   attached log).

   Regards.

I have set this to 3.4 because I still use ovirt-node-iso from oVirt
3.4.
For
some reason I can't set cluster compatibility to 3.4 and with cluster
3.5
node installation fails. I will install node from 3.5 iso and try
again.

Which Data Center version are you using to attach the Storage Domain
 to?
If the storage domain meta data indicates that it is already attached
 to
another Data Center (after DR for example). then you the attach of it
 will
only be supported for Data Center 3.5.

 Maor

Re: [ovirt-users] Import FC Storage as iSCSI

2014-11-04 Thread Maor Lipchuk
Hi Raul,

It is a known issue which should be fixed once
http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/33154 will be merged.
Please disregard this log, it only indicates about disks which are not
OVF_STORE disks, the error there is misleading.

did you managed to register those VMs to the engine?

Regards,
Maor

Progress. Now it does import/attach, but now VMs/disks are visible in storage
 domain and error is logged:

I think I already saw this issue related to jsonRPC.

  Pioter,
does the error at [1] looks familiar to you,
I remember that you worked on a bug which fixed an issue at the force
  detach?

  Raul,
meanwhile can u please try to set the Host not to use json-RPC, and check
  if
  that works for you.
  do the following:
maintain the Host -
edit the Host -
go to advanced parameters -
uncheck the checkbox of json -
after doing that, start the Host again, and try to attach the domain once
again.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: [ovirt-users] hosted engine , how to make changes to the VM post deploy

Thanks Jirka

So is this the workflow?

set the hosted-engine maintenance to global
shutdown the engine VM
make changes via virsh or editing vm.conf
sync changes to the other ha nodes
restart the VM
set hosted-engine maintenance to none

- well, not official, because it can cause a lot of troubles, so I would
not recommend it unless you have a really good reason to do it.

Also, the patch for the broker will be in 3.5.1?

- yes

I have successfully migrated my standalone ovirt into a hosted

Is there a mechanism to make changes to the hosted engine VM post
deploy. I would like to change some of the VM configuration
choices.

I tried setting the maintenance mode to global and then editing:

   /etc/ovirt-hosted-engine/vm.__conf

I changed something simple: the VM name. Then I copied the file
to the
two other HA hosts and set the maintenance mode to none.

- you need to kill the vm and restart it after you edit the configuation

hosted-engine --vm-shutdown
hosted-engine --vm-start

- also you can use virsh [1] to edit the vm

No joy the VM hostname remains unchanged in the portal.

Also, the notification system is horrendously spammy, I get email
notification of each state change from each of the HA hosts,
surely this
is not intentional. Is there some way to control this?

- that's a bug which should be fixed by this patch
