[ovirt-users] Can some one share the use cases for the local storage?

2014-11-06 Thread Arman Khalatyan
Hi,
I would like to understand the local storage purpose.
I was wondered are there any production systems using local storage?
Or in another way, how to use effectively the local hosts disks?
My ovirt purpose is so serve HA-VM LAMPs.

Thanks,
Arman.

Re: [ovirt-users] Issues with oVirt 3.4, centos 6.6 and Gluster

2014-11-06 Thread Sven Kieske

On 05/11/14 19:53, Federico Alberto Sayd wrote:
I have found some issues while trying to install two nodes with centos
6.6, oVirt 3.4 and cluster functionality.

1 - If you enable the gluster service in a cluster, when you install the
hosts, the installation fails because it tries to install the gluster
packages from Centos repository and a dependency problem is reported.

Workaround: Install the package yum-plugin-priorities and set priority=1
 in the /etc/yum.repos.d/ovirt-3.4-dependencies.repo, section
 glusterfs-epel.

2 - If you reboot the host, the service glusterd doesn't start at init,
 and host becomes non operational.

Workaround: Manually set glusterd to start at boot, using for example
 ntsysv.

Did you file bugzillas for these issues? They won't get fixed otherwise.

Well yes there is local storage in production at various sites.
For real HA you inevitable need a shared storage solution.

You could try to utilize local disks by using gluster ceph
or any other software defined storage system.

Gluster is the most integrated withing ovirt, but here are some
caveats:

It's not encouraged to run vms on the hosts which are part of the
gluster cluster (but it works, at least this is what you can read on
this very ML).

It's not supported to run hosted-engine on top of gluster, at least
not without a replica count of at least 3.

[ovirt-users] replace ovirt engine host

2014-11-06 Thread ml ml
Hello List,

currently i am testing backup and restore of my ovirt engine host.

So far the backup and recovery works.

Since i have a nfs ISO_DOMAIN i need to remount the nfs mounts on my
vdsm hosts/nodes. This is kinda ugly but okay :)

However, my storage information seems to go weird. It looks like the
ovirt engine gets confused about the current status.

Do i have to restart vdsm after replacing the ovirt engine?

When i put connect my original ovirt engine again the cluster status is okay...

I test this by unplugging the original ovirt engine host network cable
and doing a restore on a connrected 2nd machine.

So i guess my question is: How do i replace my ovirt engine smoothly
in a production enviorment?

Thanks,
Mario

Reg#localhost instead of server IP, I havent tried this, but logically it
should work. You may test it. Also there is an option called
 'backup-vol-file-servers' [1] , which should serve(if I am not wrong in
interpreting the mentioned mail thread )the same purpose.

 Yes, its possible.

I failed to interpret 'mount point' here. If you are talking about
'gluster' volume server , the VM behaviour depends on the gluster
configuration which indirectly depend on the quorum configuration and
volume configuration. If there is an error from underlying storage ( here
gluster volume) VM can pause , however latest versions of ovirt support
 auto resume.

Someone from community suggest me to use the localhost as mount point if
you are using compute storage on the same node...but i doubt about the
failover...that means if any node goes downhow the VM migration on
 another node will happen ??

If you are using local data center the VM migration can't happen. You
have to configure a storage domain which can be accessed from your Ovirt
 Cluster Hosts .

 Please have a look at
 http://www.ovirt.org/Gluster_Storage_Domain_Reference which talks about
the recommended way of configuring it.

Regarding how to add bricks to the volume , you can refer #

The virt store use case enables quorum which ideally resolves the

With foreman 1.6 (at least) there is no need to enable the nightly
builds any more as rb-ovirt is resolved by yum.

Lastly, I think you need to enable foreman_discovery with the foreman
installer to work and download images:

# foreman-installer --enable-foreman-plugin-discovery
--foreman-plugin-discovery-install-images=true

You have that already listed in the testing env setup; but this needs to
be put in context with installing foreman-ovirt on the foreman host.

Yaniv - you planned to merge them, right? That would be a good time...

  http://www.ovirt.org/Features/AdvancedForemanIntegration
With foreman 1.6 (at least) there is no need to enable the nightly
builds any more as rb-ovirt is resolved by yum.

Lastly, I think you need to enable foreman_discovery with the foreman
installer to work and download images:

 # foreman-installer --enable-foreman-plugin-discovery
 --foreman-plugin-discovery-install-images=true

You have that already listed in the testing env setup; but this needs to
be put in context with installing foreman-ovirt on the foreman host.

Yaniv - please add a note there too.

Daniel - thanks for the review and the comments!

Oved

Indeed.
I would say it is more beneficial to spend time on better analysis of what
regions of memory you want to analyze. Instead of this brute force approach
trying to scan the whole hosts memory aggressively.
E.g. We don't even have ksm per VM yet (but it's in the plan). Even that would
help a lot as you can then enable it only where it makes sense (pool deployment
with many same/idle VMs)

Thanks,

Already I think this is an annoyance; maybe thats why the process is
niced to +5. A multi process daemon would require careful confining
 (with cgroups).
To my understanding the for KSM to really work well is to have many
(idle / high mem) guests which are quite similar?

I wonder if ksmd could not be split up
in child/worker threads, thus enabling higher density
 of vms on one host.

It's likely going to be trickier than you imagine with the added
locking that would be required to synchronize the ksmd threads.
Actually I was refraining to answer Svens question since I lack some
knowledge here. But I guessed synchronization was the reason for the
 single threadted design.
Some serous work needs to be done on KSM do achieve this goal. I was
thinking about some map/reduce aglo to do that... OTOH mangeling with
mem pages of guests very requires special care.

or can this just be tweaked by altering values in
 /etc/ksmtuned.conf ?

 I don't think it can.

 What do you think?

 Interesting idea.

Indeed! Integration with oVirt Engine from within a web application
(JavaScript/HTML) sounds like a perfect match for oVirtJS project.

@Nikita, we're currently developing oVirtJS library as JavaScript
SDK for oVirt Engine. See [1] for initial PoC, see [2] for latest
version, it's still in development but it should be already usable.

Exactly, the main use case for oVirtJS is to allow working with Engine
from within a JavaScript environment. HTML/JS web application is the
primary use case, we also plan to support server-side JS code running

Hi,

if I get this correctly, you'd like to be notified when certain event
happens (VM created/deleted/etc.) and react upon that. I see multiple
possible approaches here:

0, improve Engine extension API (refer to Alon Bar-Lev for details)
   - if extensions can be packaged as JARs and these JARs could include
web fragments [1] it would mean the possibility to deploy custom
servlets onto existing Engine instance (in context of webapp that
 processes extensions)
   - your custom Java servlet could query REST interface (or be
   notified
once something happens, but AFAIK we don't have that implemented
 yet)
and do whatever logic is needed
   - once I asked Alon about ^^ but never got response from him
   - IMHO this would be a nice way to deploy custom Java code on Engine

[1] https://blogs.oracle.com/swchan/entry/servlet_3_0_web_fragment

1, improve UI plugin API
   - add VirtualMachineDataLoaded event fired upon each refresh of
VM data in UI table (generalization - {Entity}DataLoaded)
   - this is similar to existing {Entity}SelectionChange events

relying on changes in the UI table is a bad idea:

   (1) potentially missing events:
the UI displays paginated data; if my VMs are sorted by name, and
I have 1000 VMs in my setup, and I just added a VM named z, it will
be added to the last page which is not displayed right now, so I
wouldn't even be aware that something was added.

   (2) potentially creating fake events:
changes in the displayed data in the UI can occur due to change in the
Search query; if I have 50 VMs in my setup, and I initially had the
Vms: search query, and now I change it to VMs: name = a*, which
results in displaying only 10 VMs, this may falsely hint on removal
of 40 VMs from the system.

Agreed, that was a bad idea :) UI data is constrained by things like
search query, pagination, sorting etc. Scratch my previous idea.

As mentioned before, notification of relevant events occuring in system
should be the way to go. Either Engine will provide mechanism to notify
other systems (i.e. email notifier) or other system will poll/listen-to
changes in Engine (i.e. via REST API).

Idea for consideration, if every change to oVirt system would be sent
to some event bus, we could easily implement different notification
mechanisms (like websocket in addition to email), and web apps living
in Engine EAR context could also register to that event bus (imagine
WebAdmin servlet that listens for changes and pushes them to clients).

This can/should be done through the notification service,
currently it supports email snmp traps ... but it could be extended (very
 easily)

Cool, maybe something we could do in future as part of UX improvement,
i.e. change notification (push changes to client) to drive UI data update,
instead of periodic polling.

2, write UI plugin that uses oVirtJS to periodically check VM events

not sure if this is referring to VM-related events in the code (e.g.
hooking to the click on OK within the New VM / Remove VM dialog,
or hooking to the Success callback of the action response, or
something similar), or to the VM-related Events (i.e. the ones that
are displayed in the GUI within the Events main-tab / bottom section).
If the former: can be done, I assume, though not sure how complex it
would be to implement the infrastructure for that.
If the latter: this will catch actions that were performed either
via the GUI or outside the GUI; in this case, it would probably be
better to use an Engine extension API (solution 0 above) rather
than a UI plugin, since it will be more reliable, will be active
even when the GUI is not in use, etc.

It was meant simply as polling Engine via oVirtJS / REST API.

But then again, any UI plugin-based solution has the drawback that
web GUI must be active (open) in order for plugin to be active.

I am creating a VM and the copy from template operation has gone haywire
causing significant performance issues on the host server. I’d like to
cancel the copying image action (it’s been running ~3hours on a 3GB disk
image copy) but I cannot find anything in the web UI to cancel a task. Is
there a command line tool to cancel the running task?

login to your SPM host and run the following

  vdsClient -s 0 getAllTasksStatuses

  You can than use

  stopTask
  TaskID
  stop async task

  and then

  clearTask
  TaskID
  clear async task

I suggest to only stop the task/tasks and let the ovirt engine to perform the
 clearance of the tasks.

+1 - I agree with Liron.
Let AsyncTaskManager handle the task clearing - it will also remove relevant
entries from db.
Ravi, what do you think?

The oVirt version is 3.4 and vdsm version 4.14.

Thanks for any advice or links to documentation/man pages.

in Engine EAR context could also register to that event bus (imagine
WebAdmin servlet that listens for changes and pushes them to clients).

This can/should be done through the notification service,
currently it supports email snmp traps ... but it could be extended (very
  easily)

Cool, maybe something we could do in future as part of UX improvement,
i.e. change notification (push changes to client) to drive UI data update,
 instead of periodic polling.

Bare ind mind the notification service works with audit log (the user marks
what will be notified).
I think you might be after for something else? Or did you refer to audit
log/events only?

2, write UI plugin that uses oVirtJS to periodically check VM events

not sure if this is referring to VM-related events in the code (e.g.
hooking to the click on OK within the New VM / Remove VM dialog,
or hooking to the Success callback of the action response, or
something similar), or to the VM-related Events (i.e. the ones that
are displayed in the GUI within the Events main-tab / bottom section).
If the former: can be done, I assume, though not sure how complex it

I went through this a couple months ago. Migrated my hosted-engine from one
NFS host to another. Here are the steps that I documented from the experience.
There is probably a better way, but this worked for me on two separate
hosted-engine environments.

1. Make a backup of RHEV-M
2. Migrate VMs off all hosts that run hosted-engine (except
hosted-engine itself)
3. Put hosted-engine hosts in maintenance mode (except host that's

c. sanlock client shutdown -f 1
d. service sanlock stop
e. umount /rhev/data-center/mnt/hosted-engine-share

8. mount new NFS share on /hosted_tgt
9. mount old NFS share on /hosted_src
10. Copy data (make sure sparse files are kept sparse):

11. Edit /etc/ovirt-hosted-engine/hosted-engine.conf and change path:

Well yes there is local storage in production at various sites.
For real HA you inevitable need a shared storage solution.
An example and 'real' use case to Svens answer:
The term 'local' might indeed a bit misleading. The posix file system
option basically lets you use anything posix compliant. For instance I
am using a cluster file system called StorNext in our company - witch is
very well suited for use with oVirt. Without POSIX, I could not have
used it.

Posix enables usage of GlusterFuseFS. However, it might be the case the
replica 3 is only needed when using FuseFS [1], independent from the
fact of using Gluster and Compute on the same host.

CentOS 7 is supported for host nodes, but not the engine. If you have a

CentOS 7 is supported for host nodes, but not the engine. If you have a mixed
CentOS 6/7 environment, note that migration works from 6-7 hosts, but not from
7-6.

Re: [ovirt-users] Integration of ovirt-engine GUI with the CLI

2014-11-06 Thread Nikita Kodkani
I got the use case of ovirt.js. But I don't think so it can be used in my
case. I have to instead use CGI/php. My aim is to run the command from the
rhevm manager bash prompt with dynamic attributes and then returns the
success/failure result.

E.g `rhevmcommand -lrt -p password `

Rhevmcommand is written in bash script, which internally calls REST api
using curl.

Password is similar that of rhevm manager database.

Now I want something like
snip
Var result=`rhevmcommand -lrt`
 in HTML/java/...web UI.

its the other way around - the cli/shell commands are using the engine
python-sdk, which uses the engine REST API.

if your solution is html/javascript based, i think using ovirt.js (which
wraps calling to the engine rest api 'nicely', vs. you doing it yourself
from your code) is the way to go.

Exactly, the main use case for oVirtJS is to allow working with Engine
from within a JavaScript environment. HTML/JS web application is the
primary use case, we also plan to support server-side JS code running
on Node.js as another use case, so that people can potentially write
custom server-side JS to work with Engine.

vojtech - sounds like ovirt.js could be the best fit here?

connect
the ovirt-engine GUI with the backend CLI commands?

which language is your gui?
why use the CLI instead of the python or java SDKs
