TL;DR version - no actual regression in oVirt, meaning 'we applied a patch and we broke something'. - fix is underway - to propose the relevant patches to Fedora QEMU package Long(ish) version 1 some time ago we adhered to QEMU/KVM clock settings recommendations (see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1053846) 2 these recommendations are *still* valid as today - I just checked with upstream developers while investigating bz1165336 3 these recommendations may have surprising effects like disabling HPET clock 4 on some old(ish) upstream QEMUs, disabling HPET may hurt migrations - hence bz1165336 5 only *very* recent QEMUs (2.2.0rc0!) have the fixes, which are about improving kvm clock, while HPET clock is still not recommended (see #2 above) 6 if the qemu-kvm-rhev is used (available in the oVirt repo), the experience is significantly better However, the reporter *has* a very valid point, which motivated me to write me this mail: a. F20 is a supported platform b. I *guess* Fedora is the platform of choice to try out QEMU and to initially play with it c. out-of-the box experience with oVirt and Fedora is cumbersome, many steps and tunings are needed. This may annoy users - without a valid reason! Can you detail the many steps and tunings are needed? I just install Fedora 20 and oVirt 3.5 snapshot and it usually just works... d. hence there is an unneededly high first step to try out oVirt, and this is hurting the project Now, I'd like to raise this question * it is true that Fedora is the platform of choice to try out and evaluate oVirt? * if so, is the experience on Fedora streamlined enough or could it made simple, hence we could have a better vector to spread oVirt? * what we could do, as oVirt project, to improve the above? Until oVirt 3.4.3 there was a column with the disk type (Preallocated or Thin Provisioned) but now it's gone! Furthermore, there is only a VIrtual Size tab now and the Actual Size is missing. This was very useful for Thin Provisioned Disks because we could see the actual disk utilization whereas now we only see the allocated size without knowing how much is actually used. What was the reason for this change? It was a very useful feature which I believe should be brought back again! So usage metrics on CPU / RAM / DISK / Network (over provisioned or not is another story) There is an aspect on actual usage versus provisioned usage. {vm provisioned 10 GB of RAM bus os+app uses just 5 GB of them etc) But let's keep it simple. Should we have the usage reference then a GUI that the can define the cost plans, would be ideal. A way to query if possible that database, would ease existing ERPs and invoicing software to produce / send invoices. This is for mostly post paid use cases. For prepaid situations, there must be some regular accounting that will stop the service through our current API. It sounds a bit scaring to actually shutdown the provisioned vm. So at least on first step stop the networking I guess that the base is to create a separate database that will keep the consumed metrics, so that customers could actually use it to enforce some business logic. (as explained above). Should there be a minimal gui that could a small hoster create his owns plans and perhaps issue some invoice would be ideal. Since there are a number of open source billing systems out there, perhaps the integration is not that complicated. A second thought would be to extend the data ware house gui to create the invoice outputs as most of the usage info is there. I know that ovirt is supposed to be a virtualization solution and not a full monty billing system. Thanks for reading so far. [ovirt-users] engine poller/satellite functionment?
Hi all, I already manage a first engine and I'm about to deploy a second engine to an other site. I have thought about several possibilities: * create a new independant engine on the future site * create a second datacenter in the first engine so that all my vms are aggregated in a same place and contact hosts with public addresses (hum...) or via a vpn. * the last one is a question : like centreon does with monitoring, is there a way to use the first engine as a master (or central) and the second or many other ones as poller/satellite which are supposed to deal locally with hosts? This architecture is interesting because the workload is reparted between several engines and once link is needed between poller and central. More, all my vms are shown in the same ui. Can someone give me his point of view about this? Thank you. ___ Users mailing list Users@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users

Re: [ovirt-users] Failed Glance Image Import Task Cannot Be Removed
No ideas from anyone? On Sun, 2014-11-23 at 08:13 -0500, Chris Routh wrote: Greetings fellow mailing listers, I've been using oVirt since September now, and using version 3.5 currently. When I first setup my small cluster I decided to import a CentOS image from the glance image repository. However the first time I tried it the import failed to complete. The problem is that oVirt has not clued in that this import failed even 2 months and several reboots of the entire cluster later. I ended up re-attempting the import a day later (this is back in September) and it worked, however this invalid task is still in my task list. I tried using a few tricks from this mailing list when I encountered this, one was to run a task removal script on the hosted-engine. However while that removed other stale tasks like drive copying.. it never seems to work for this import task. This task disappears when I run the script, but reappears once the hosted-engine is restarted. It's stuck.. somewhere. I had settled on giving up on cleaning up this nuisance a month ago, and had planned to forget about it; until today. Today I am upgrading my storage pool from a simple NFS share on an old linux server to a proper NFS volume on a new FreeNAS device. Everything was smooth until I moved everything off the old NFS share and wanted to put it into maintenance mode so I could cleanly remove it from the datacenter. I cannot remove it. Attempting to remove it produces the error: Operation Canceled Error while executing action: Cannot deactivate Data Domain while there are running tasks on this data domain. -Please wait until tasks will finish and try again. So now I am forced to find the solution to removing this task. I know the task's ID is 765780ce but how do I rid myself of this ghost once and for all? Also important to mention I have noticed there is a 'Locked' disk associated with this task. I'm not really sure if this the intended way to achieve customer separation. I don't know this field well, so I need to talk about it with my colleagues from networking team. Meanwhile you can try overriding your display address on host level like this: 1, In hosts subtab, edit host. 2, In the dialog select console. 3, Check 'Override display address', fill in corresponding host name (in your case kvm01.allwinnertech.com for host kvm01, kvm02.allwinnertech.com for kvm02 host etc) - do this for every host in the cluster. Just to rule out a few issues I have * stopped iptables on the storage domains * verified that each hypervisor has mounted all of the storage domains (using the mount command from a ssh session) * mounted the storage domains individually from the engine I don't think that it is a connection issue, but rather a data corruption issue.
