Re: [ovirt-users] Maximum VM memory

2015-05-11 Thread Christophe TREFOIS
Hi Omer,

Especially the last point of your response is a good thing!

I came across the problem as well, when trying to increase a VM to be 16 GB
and by choosing any other 64 bit template it worked.

Looking forward to these changes,

 Subject: [ovirt-users] Maximum VM memory

 Dear ovirt users,

We have a special machine which has 1 TB RAM.

The idea is to have 3-4 VMs on there which should be split like
 85/5/5/5 % of total RAM.

 I have three questions:

 1. Is there any reason not to put up a VM with so much RAM

i don't think there is a problem with that

 2. How can I increase the maximum RAM size for 64 bit VMs?

i dont think you need to increase the maximum, max ram for 64bit os should be
ok for your case with any cluster with compatibility of 3.1 and above (2TiB):
$ engine-config --get VM64BitMaxMemorySizeInMB
VM64BitMaxMemorySizeInMB: 524288 version: 3.0
VM64BitMaxMemorySizeInMB: 2097152 version: 3.1
VM64BitMaxMemorySizeInMB: 2097152 version: 3.2
VM64BitMaxMemorySizeInMB: 2097152 version: 3.3
VM64BitMaxMemorySizeInMB: 4096000 version: 3.4
VM64BitMaxMemorySizeInMB: 4096000 version: 3.5
VM64BitMaxMemorySizeInMB: 4194304 version: 3.6

 3. How can I create a new OS for the VM creation that supports 16 GB ?
(Right now i have to choose RHEL 64 bits even for Debian systems)

please see [1] for customizing guest os information.
please note this bug [2]:
Bug 1218531 - Setting Other OS is default 32bit instead of 64bit and causes
incorrect RAM size limit of 16GB for 64bit OS.

should be part of ovirt 3.5.3 where the we change most OS to be 64bit by
default so most linux distros will be considered 64bit (Linux, debian 7, suse,
ubuntu..)

[ovirt-users] how to delete the default cluster?

2015-05-11 Thread Nathanaël Blanchet

Hello,
I'd like to remove the default cluster, but engine refuses telling me
that the blank template is associated to it. The problem is that all my
vms (nearly 200) are created on the base of that template, so I can't
first remove it.

Is there a workaround to do this?

Subject: [ovirt-users] My feedback on network setting after installing OVirt

 Hi All,

Like to give my feedback about how the network interface behaved after OVirt
 I have used

 CentOS 6.6 64 bit, updated

 Ovirt stable from the repo

Now after the installation, and configuration you get ovirtmgmt interface
and ovirtmgmt interface gets the IP address and everything is fine . Now
 reboot it

result is that when you give ifconfig , eth0 is not displayed and ovirtmgmt
 do not have IP address

This stage solved by giving ifconfig eth0 up

and restarting the network, it will give ovirtmgmt an IP now

So you have to do this on every reboot?

I tested it using different installation, with DHCP or manual configuration
for eth0 , in both the case the same experience

Sounds a bit like [1]. Adding Petr, this bug's owner.

Can you please check/post relevant conf/log files (ifcfg*, vdsm/system logs
etc)?

 Giving my feedback,

Thanks,

[ovirt-users] Problems with ISCSI storagedomain

2015-05-11 Thread Luciano Natale
Hello everyone!

I'm running oVirt 3.5, and recently had an issue with a split brain
situation in the hosted engine's image. After solving that, I got the
engine up an running, but something went wrong with my main storage.
I have a datacenter with main storage being ISCSI, called vms-main-storage.
This storagedomain is marked as inactive. The only action I can attemp to
do to it is activate it. But it won't. It just fails and no reason is given
in the web ui. I also tried activating it through the cli, and result is
status 400, reason bad request, detail internal engine error. Strange thing
is that VM's are still running with their images in this storage and they
are running with no problem at all!
How can I have this storagedomain again in a healthy state???
Thanks!

Is there a way to directly connect a specific device (ie, NIC) to a

I've figured out how to map a specific network interface to a VM, thats
one step, but in the end I may need direct access to the PCI device
  itself.

I think this 3.6 feature might do exactly what you want:
   http://www.ovirt.org/Features/hostdev_passthrough

It's gonna be a while before 3.6 is out, but once the feature is merged
it'll be available if you install the nightly snapshot. CCing Martin
   Polednik, the feature owner.

  Hello,

just on the status of the feature (as it's exactly what you require -
  direct
pci device attachment) - the host side is hopefully ~week away from being
ready, the UI side will take longer though - if you wanted, you could
  probably
run nightly and spawn the VM yourself and treat is as external VM. CCing
  Martin
Betak, who is the one to blame for the UI :)

Hi all,

the frontend part has just landed in master [1]. The UI is not beatufil (yet)
but it should provide you with the ability to directly attach specific devices
to VM. It should be polished well enough in time for 3.6.

Best regards,

Martin B.

[1] https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/37620/

You also need RHEL 7 (ideal support will be in 7.1) and I suggest reading
the chapter on IOMMU groups, as you might need to block (detach from host)
other devices than the nic in order to get it passed through.

Second to that, for network interfaces mapped to a particular VM, is
there a way for the VM to be able to properly detect physical link
  state
of that interface? Right now that's a 'configurable option' inside
network interface settings on the VM in the manager (ie, plugged, not
plugged, and link state up /down)

If I'm not mistaken, once you have direct access to the PCI device
you'll be able to query for its actual state using e.g. ethtool.

Thanks,
David

I haven't upgraded my centos 6.6 nodes, only tried to add a centos 7

 Hi,

Trying to add the ZONE field to the NIC's in oVirt as I'm trying to use
 Firewalld instead of iptables.

Manually it works fine but when I try to set a custom property, it doesn't
 apply.

 http://www.ovirt.org/Features/Network_Custom_Properties

I can't figure out if this should work or I should use a different method.

When you add a zone custom property to the network, you should also
add something in Vdsm to handle it. This something is usually a hook
script, possibly the after_network_setup one.

There, you could edit the ifcfg file, and take it up again.

This would be a bit cumbersome and slow. Alternatively, you can modify
vdsm's ifcfg.py configurator to include this zone.

Dan.

[ovirt-users] Unable to Delete a VM snapshot .

2015-05-11 Thread Kumar R, Prashanth (Prashanth)
Hi All,

I am facing issue in deleting a VM snapshot.
I am using ovirt-engine-sdk-java-3.5.0.5.jar

According to the SDK API,I can delete a VM using :
api.getVMs().get(vmName).getSnapshots().getById(snapshotId).delete();

But there is no way to fetch the snapshot ID of a particular snapshot.

Or

ListVMSnapshot vmSnapshots = api.getVMs().get(vmName).getSnapshots().list();
 for (VMSnapshot vmSnapshot : vmSnapshots) {
  if(vmSnapshot.getDescription() == snapshotdescription){
 vmSnapshot.delete();
  }

I cannot use the above snippet of code to delete a snapshot, but the multiple
snapshots for a vm can be created with the same description.

So is there a way to create a snapshot with a snapshot name assigned to it.
SO that delete, restore opeartions can be performed based on the snapshot name .

Thanks,

[ovirt-users] multiple OVF_STORE disks?

2015-05-11 Thread Rik Theys

Hi,

I'm still on 3.5.2 and noticed that I have two OVF_STORE disks. Is this
normal, or am I hitting the bug described in the recent announcement?

This might have been caused by one of my tests that made my storage
domain unavailable. When I activated the storage domain again I noticed
that a lot of VM's I created as part of a pool suddenly reappeared and
I had to delete them again.

Now that I have two OVF_STORE disks, how do I know which one I can remove?

When I list the virtual machines tab on the disks, they both show an
empty list.

Regards,

Rik

Subject: [ovirt-users] Ovirt fails to import Windows 8 2012 VM's using

I am unable to import VM's migrated with virt-v2v-1.28.1-1.28.el7.x86_64 /
libguestfs-1.28.1-1.28.el7.x86_64. There is a virt-v2v bug on this, but it
is identified as a oVirt issue -
 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1213701

Is there a scheduled release/fix for this issue?

as stated in that bug, ovirt will allow spice for win8 and above in 3.6
Bug 1211231 - [RFE] enable SPICE/QXL support for Windows 8/2012 even without
the QXL drivers

then import should succeed

as a workaround, you can add the support manually

 Thank you,

[ovirt-users] HE: changing engine storage connection's interface

2015-05-11 Thread Daniel Helgenberger
Hello,

I have just deployed my new hosted engine (3.5.2). Now, after some basic
infra is running, I want to change the NFS connection vdsm is using for
HE's vm.

Please advice me on this procedure:

 1. set global maint.
 2. shutdown HE and all VMs
 3. stop engine-ha
 4. stop vdsm
 5. unmount engine domain
 6. hosted-engine.conf storage= stection
 7. start vdsm
 8. start engine-ha
 9. reconnect storage
10. -- repeat step 3 - 9 for all ha hosts

Thanks!

[ovirt-users] simple virtual disk moving

2015-05-11 Thread p...@email.cz

hello, would I explicitly define interface for only disk moving ??

Move process takes the first interface from list ( VM assigned ), but
any interface for moving virtuals ( explicitly defined ).

eg.
VM moving from A to B - it takes interface defined for moving (
movingLAN )

but
moving only simple disk of VM from A to B - it takes default interface
from list of assigned LANs

any idea ??

IMHO the disk move is done by the SPM host using dd or qemu-img (ovirt
3.5+). This process uses the storage connections it has configured.

This is normal, by default there are 2 OVF_STORE disks per domain. In case of
failure of updating the first one
the second is kept as a backup.

The number of OVF_STORE disks for domain can be changed by modifying the config
value 'StorageDomainOvfStoreCount'.

Thanks,

Re: [ovirt-users] Hosted engine on iscsi and data domain on GFS2

2015-05-11 Thread Sherif Nagy
A quick update, the storage directory is created with root.root so vdsmd is
not able to write, I managed to change the ownership to 36:36 and every
thing worked fine after the directory has been created.

I think this is what happens behind the scene:
- check if directory exits or not.
- if not creates it with 755 , root.root
- sudo and mount file systems
- try to write __DIRECT_IO_TEST__ fails
- sudo umount
- directory gets deleted

Can someone confirm ?

[ovirt-users] MAC spoofing for specific VMs

2015-05-11 Thread Christopher Young
I'm working on some load-balancing solutions and they appear to require MAC
spoofing. I did some searching and reading and as I understand it, you can
disable the MAC spoofing protection through a few methods.

I was wondering about the best manner to enable this for the VMs that
require it and not across the board (if that is even possible). I'd like
to just allow my load-balancer VMs to do what they need to, but keep the
others untouched as a security mechanism.

If anyone has any advice on the best method to handle this scenario, I
would greatly appreciate it. It seems that this might turn into some type
of feature request, though I'm not sure if this is something that has to be
done at the Linux bridge level, the port level, or the VM level. Any
explanations into that would also help in my education.

[ovirt-users] Delete snapshot

2015-05-11 Thread Johan Kooijman
Hi all,

I created a snapshot on a VM, which I'd like to delete. No further
snapshots were made, only this single only.
The button delete is greyed out though, untill I power off the VM. I
thought with live merge this wasn't needed any more, or am I mistaken?

Engine running on CentOS 6 x64, latest stable versions of all packages. Am
I missing something?

 Hi Friends of oVirt

I talked with the network administrator and remove the proxy rules to a
range of IP's, installed oVirt with hosted engine on CentOS 7.1 and
everything run just fine. Previously I set the enviroment settings to
include the include proxy and proxy exceptions for the all the users of the
system with a file in /etc/profile.d/ directory. I used to do this and
 always works.

 It's a bug in oVirt ?

My ovirt-image-repository it's working now and with IP's behind the proxy
 doesn't.

oVirt doesn't play nice behind a web proxy ?

Not sure what's the exact issue, but engine-setup and hosted-engine --deploy
do not directly download packages - they use yum for that. So if yum works
for you, they should, too. Generally speaking, you can configure yum to use
a proxy by setting 'proxy=$URL' in /etc/yum.conf.

Best,

Re: [ovirt-users] overt node el6 to el7 upgrade

2015-05-11 Thread Jiří Sléžka

Hi Chuck,

I also have not upgraded my hosts from el6 to el7 but I am about to do
it soon. IMHO it is as simple as

for every el6 host

1) move one el6 host to maintenance (to migrate all guests out of it)
2) remove that host from manager
3) reinstall this host with el7
4) add this new host in manager
5) migrate guests to el7 host

be careful, you can (live)migrate guests from el6 to el7 but not the
other way!

Cheers, Jiri

Subject: [ovirt-users] My feedback on network setting after installing OVirt

  Hi All,

Like to give my feedback about how the network interface behaved after OVirt
  I have used

  CentOS 6.6 64 bit, updated

  Ovirt stable from the repo

Now after the installation, and configuration you get ovirtmgmt interface
and ovirtmgmt interface gets the IP address and everything is fine . Now
  reboot it

result is that when you give ifconfig , eth0 is not displayed and
  ovirtmgmt
  do not have IP address

This stage solved by giving ifconfig eth0 up

and restarting the network, it will give ovirtmgmt an IP now

So you have to do this on every reboot?

Yes on every reboot I have to do it

I tested it using different installation, with DHCP or manual configuration
for eth0 , in both the case the same experience

Sounds a bit like [1]. Adding Petr, this bug's owner.

Can you please check/post relevant conf/log files (ifcfg*, vdsm/system logs
 etc)?

 [1] https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1154399

I don't think that the bug is related, as Joseph's case lacks any bond.

Network should have been restored by Vdsm on its start up. However, in
ovirt-3.5.0 there were cases where this has failed. Furthermore, we
still have

1203422 vdsm should restore networks much earlier, to let
net-dependent services start

that is still on our TODO list.

To understand precisely what happens on your host, we'd need your vdsm
version, and as Didi asked - your {super,}vdsm.log and /var/log/message.

However, to avoid the need of re-solving a solved bug, verify that you
use vdsm-4.16.14 or later.

 Any more ideas?
I just had the same problem.
My unknown error indeed to the fact that glusterd / glusterfsd were
not running.

After starting them it turned out the host setup did not automatically
add the iptables rules for gluster. I added to iptables:

# gluster
-A INPUT -p tcp --dport 24007:24011 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp --dport 38465:38485 -j ACCEPT

Afterwards 'gluster peer status' worked and my host was operational
again.

Hint: Sometimes this is do to gluster itself. Restaring glusterd works
most of the time to fix this.

[ovirt-users] Configuring ilo2 PM; passing ssh options

2015-05-11 Thread Daniel Helgenberger
Hello,

to make this short - i need to pass ssh options to get the connection to
ilo2 working (MACs=hmac-sha1) [1].

How can this be done? I think the 'options' field is clearly for
something else?

Using this option in .ssh/config works btw.

Thanks!
