Hi Deepak,

Thanks for your time for answering :).

I have already done that but still not succeeded. The error is host_ip:5900
request timeout while trying to access vm console. i have also checked
disabling firewalls and am able to do telnet on 5900.

Thanks,

Subject: [External] : [ovirt-users] Importing VMs from CentOS 8 Streams to
Oracle 8.9 oVirt (QXL issues)

Hello all,

I'm evaluating switching our existing oVirt clusters to Oracle Linux 8 oVirt
4.5.
It seems that Oracle has completely disabled QXL/Spice (leaving only VGA and
Cirrus) on their oVirt fork (1).
I'm trying to import a VM from an existing oVirt data storage into an Oracle
cluster, but I'm getting
'VAR__ACTION__IMPORT,VAR__TYPE__VM,ACTION_TYPE_FAILED_ILLEGAL_VM_DISPLAY_TYPE_IS_NOT_SUPPORTED_BY_OS'
 error.
Comparing the spice-related packages in Oracle and CentOS based oVirt
installation, I see no changes.

Two questions:
1. Can I somehow enable QXL support in Oracle oVirt?
2. Assuming I can't, can I somehow editing the VM configuration without
mounting in a temporary CentOS based cluster, editing the configuration and
reimporting it into Oracle?

Thanks,
Gilboa

[ovirt-users] Re: [External] : NFS Share file to mount in ovIrt

2024-04-17 Thread Marcos Sungaila via Users
Hi De Lee,

The directory shared by NFS must be owned by the vdsm user (UID 36) and the kvm
group (GID 36) with 0755 permission.
Also, the share configuration must allow your KVM hosts to connect to it, like:

/share-directoryIP-ADDRESS-OR-HOSTNAME(rw)
OTHER-IP-ADDRESS-OR-HOSTNAME(rw)

You can add other options if you want. Then restart the nfs service or reload
the exports and test again.
After that, try manually mounting the NFS share on your KVM host to confirm it
works.

Hi,

It is hard to say anything from the output snippet you sent.
You should have sent the VM resources (mem, cpu, disk, nics), the distro and
version you are using, the command used to start the deployment, all input
provided, and the whole output. Please use a service like pastebin.com if you

Scripts from the ovirt-sdk4, virt-v2v commands, API access, and others still

using using ovirt-engine-extension-aaa-ldap-setup is not an option.

In the documentation, they say that 'ovirt-engine-extension-aaa-ldap-setup' is

2024-04-10 Thread Marcos Sungaila via Users
Hi Igor,

When creating a virtual disk, in 4.5 (oVirt & OLVM), the "New Virtual Disk"
dialog brings the "Enable Incremental Backup" automatically checked.
The "Shareable" and "Enable Incremental Backup" options can not be set
simultaneously.
To create a shareable virtual disk, click the "Shareable" option and unclick
the "Enable Incremental Backup" option.

Subject: [External] : [ovirt-users] Can't create shared disk after upgrade to
4.5.4

Hi,
In my lab I'm using OLVM ( I know ... it's not original oVirt but it is based
on it ). I was using 4.4.10, and after upgrade to 4.5.4 I'm no longer able to
create shared disks, on any storage domain (nfs or fc). When I was on previous
release I was able to create and use shared disks (required for cluster
systems), but after upgrade when I try to create shared disk (preallocated) I'm
getting an error saying : Error while executing action: Cannot add Virtual
Disk. Disk's volume format is not supported for shareable disk.
In engine log I can see only this :
2024-03-31 20:04:28,997+02 WARN

Does anyone have idea what could be the reason or how to solve this?
Thanks in advance and best regards

Hi,

You cannot run the ovirt-engine service on a KVM host. The server must act as a
hypervisor (KVM host) or the Engine server, not both at the same time. I
understand you are running a lab using VMs. Create two VMs, one for the KVM
host and another for the Engine application.

[ovirt-users] Re: [External] : Understanding Preallocation (Actual) Size of a thin DIsk

2024-03-27 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi Shafi,

Creating a thin provisioned disk using a block Storage Domain will allocate
512MB of disk space. I don’t have the values for a file-based Storage Domain.
In a regular VM operation, the disk is increased when it reaches 80% (dev team,
correct me if I’m wrong) of the allocated space used. This does not impact the
VM operation, and disks are increased as needed with no VM downtime.
If you try to test this disk size-increasing functionality using tools like dd,
you will fail because it does not behave like a normal VM operation.

[ovirt-users] Re: [External] : Create Vm without Storage Domain

2024-03-20 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi Shafi,

A Storage Domain in oVirt is like a Storage Pool in a stand-alone KVM host.
To create a virtual disk on a stand-alone KVM host, a storage pool must exist
where you create the virtual disk. The same for oVirt, to upload or to create a
virtual disk, a Storage Domain must exist.
After uploading the disk to the Storage Domain, you can attach it to a VM.

[ovirt-users] Re: [External] : Unable to upload image to disk - due to a network error

2024-02-19 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi Alan,

Some comments before the solution.

> This message is related to network not to certificate because it is installed
> otherwise it cannot even started to upload.
Even if the certificate is not installed, the upload will start, and the
initial phase will go through but will fall into a paused state soon.

You can use the Engine server or a KVM host to upload the ISO image or prepare
a Linux box with all the required packages to upload ISO images to a Data
Storage Domain.

I'm using OLVM, but the steps are the same for oVirt on CentOS or other
distros. Here are the instructions:

How to upload an ISO image through the command line in OLVM 4.5

- Install the python3-ovirt-engine-sdk4 and ovirt-imageio-client rpm packages.
Both packages are installed by default on all OLVM hosts (KVM and Engine
servers).

- Download the OLVM CA Public Key, saving it to the /root home directory or any
other place you want. You can use the /etc/pki/ovirt-engine/ca if running on
the Engine server.pem file:

curl -k -L
'http:///ovirt-engine/services/pki-resource?resource=ca-certificate=X509-PEM-CA'
 -o /root/ca-.pem

- Create the config file ~/.config/ovirt.conf with the following content:

mkdir ~/.config

cat << EOF > ~/.config/ovirt.conf
[OLVM-PROFILE]
engine_url = https://
username =
password =
cafile =
EOF

Notes:
. You can change the OLVM-PROFILE name to something meaningful for your
environment like prod-engine or olvmdashboard or any other thing you like.
. The user must have the domain in it, for example: admin@internal or the AD
domain if using external authentication.
. You can use the /usr/share/doc/python3-ovirt-engine-sdk4/examples/ovirt.conf
example file to add other configuration options to this file.

- Prerequisites:

  - Current scripts from the python3-ovirt-engine-sdk4 rpm package still search
for the python command. Configure the python command using alternatives:
  [root@host1 ~]# alternatives --set python /usr/bin/python3

Confirm this configuration works by running the python command:
  [root@host1 ~]# python
  Python 3.6.8 (default, Nov 10 2022, 12:32:59)
[GCC 8.5.0 20210514 (Red Hat 8.5.0-15.0.1)] on linux
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
  >>>

  - OLVM 4.4 installed, up and running with at least one Data Storage Domain
already configured.
  - Already downloaded ISO image file name: OracleLinux-R9-U0-x86_64-dvd.iso
  - Existing Storage Domain: vms <-- use your Data Storage name in the
following command

- Uploading the ISO image to the existing Storage Domain:

[root@host1 ~]#
/usr/share/doc/python3-ovirt-engine-sdk4/examples/upload_disk.py \
  -c \
  --disk-format raw \
  --sd-name \
  OracleLinux-R9-U0-x86_64-dvd.iso

network error

Hi. Is there a way to send an ISO to self hosted server?

Because I 've been searching for help and a lot of people complaining about it.

1 - What is the way to send ISOs to oVirt? Are there a command line tool to
send ISOs to my server?
"The ISO Uploader tool has been deprecated. Red Hat recommends uploading ISO
images to the data domain with the Administration Portal or with the REST API.
See Section 11.8.1, “Uploading Images to a Data Storage Domain” for details."
https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_virtualization/4.3/html/administration_guide/sect-the_iso_uploader_tool__;!!ACWV5N9M2RV99hQ!JlAxn0-R_8KpdDSHPtteie5onFH5Mu8-3r1OTfpCcpeMYqQpiWo5BUll65FndaWOHto4twNm-bxyhXuUxQRasyN5$

2 - ISO sending from portal worked for a smaller image. It could be done for OL
7.9 with 4 GB. But I am trying to upload OL 8.9 ISO with 13.5 GB and it is not
finishing. It is not resuming. It started to upload. I have a configured
certificate installed and ok tested connection.

I got this error: "Unable to upload image to disk
a72b0da4-1bbb-453c-b846-701eef9761f6 due to a network error. Ensure
ovirt-engine's CA certificate is registered as a trusted CA in the browser. The
certificate can be fetched from"
It started but not finished: "Sent 1732 of 12812 MB"

This message is related to network not to certificate because it is installed
otherwise it cannot even started to upload.

Are there a user-friendly way to upload a ISO to a server using any command
line tool? Latter versions I can send a ISO to a storage pool and it appears in
server. Now I read it is impossible. Does it impossible by now?

My is 4.4.10.7-1.0.25.el8. I am using NFS share and self hosted engine.

Thanks very for the reply Marcos. I tried another deployment, just to see if
"wait for the host to be up" would time out, and I saw a couple of errors in

From the ovirt-hosted-engine-setup-ansible-final_clean log, it mentions that

I set the IP to the one I have assigned in DNS, but when I attach to the
console of the VM (which is still running, though the disk image has been
deleted) via virsh, it shows me a completely different IP: In hosted-engine
--deploy, I set a 10.0.0.x address, however, it shows a 192.168.1.x address on
the VM. Do I need to set this somewhere else, e.g., with
'--ansible-extra-vars=he_ipv4_subnet_prefix='?

As for the storage pool, is that for later VM deployment? The deploy script did
not ask me for a storage location. If I need to specify this, where do I do
this?

Thanks again for any help,

Kind regards,

Cam

The he_offline_deployment on oVirt does not check for package updates. If you
install all the packages in advance, you can use this option.

I managed to get the firewall opened, and it progressed from there, but got
stuck at "Wait for the host to be up". I found a suggestion of setting
'--ansible-extra-vars=he_offline_deployment=true', but then it just failed at
an earlier point in the deployment process.

I’m not sure if I correctly understood your intention, you want to use 2 nodes
for a 3 node deployment, is that what you want to do?

The replica 3 arbiter 1 means you need 3 nodes, 2 nodes will have data, and 1
node will have the checksum only (the arbiter).

On oVirt, 3 nodes is mandatory as minimum.

Hi,

If you want to upgrade from 4.3 to 4.4, keeping the SHE deployment, you can use
the steps outlined in the
https://www.oracle.com/a/ocom/docs/olvm44/olvm-4.4-admin-guide.pdf, chapter 5.
It describes the process for OLVM but is the same for oVirt.

Subject: [External] : [ovirt-users] Migrating from a self hosted engine to
standalone

Hi, I am in the process of moving our oVirt environment from a self hosted
engine to a standalone engine on it's own HW. I have Googled and found a
procedure for standalone > self hosted, but not the other way around.

My current situation is that I have 5 locations running oVirt 4.3 with 3 to 4
hypervisors and iSCSI storage backend, with a self hosted engine. All these
locations are operational and short a downtime is acceptable if a must, losing
a VM is NOT good.
I also have 1 oVirt environment 4.3 with 2 hypervisors and iSCSI backend that
is my QA/Test.
All my networks are on internal networks with no outside world connections.

Most importantly, we are also looking at upgrading from 4.3 to 4.4

I have not found any straightforward way to migrate from self hosted to
standalone.

My current plan is to do the following.
1) Create a new 4.4 standalone engine
2) Remove one hypervisor from the 4.3 cluster
3) Kickstart the hypervisor to RHEL 8.8 and configure ready for oVirt 4.4
4) Add the new host to the standalone engine.
5) Shutdown and export a number of VMs in the oVirt 4.3 and import them in to
the new oVirt 4.4.
6) Repeat steps 2 > 5 until the everything is moved over.

Just wanting to get your expert opinions on this method or is there a much
quicker easier method that will not risk the chances of losing the cluster/VMs
or an extended outage.
Since we need to upgrade anyway from 4.3 to 4.4 I thought this the better
method that upgrading the operational clusters.

Thanks

You sent some messages, but all of them needed more information.
You can send as many e-mails as you need, but it will help if you provide
enough information to help us help you.

You didn’t say which OS version you use to deploy the hosted engine. Which
oVirt version are you using?
The log you sent is the ansible log, not the deployment log. It should be
better to send both if you want.
Also, a simple search for failed in your log shows your installation is missing
some packages.

The issue is trying to manage the hardware using the power management interface.
If you need to power off or reboot a KVM host, use the Management button in the
Engine portal.
All HA configured VM will be restarted in another available KVM host.

2023-02-23 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi Anthony,

It is not an issue. This is the expected behavior.
Using any Power Management interface to shut down or reboot the hardware will
crash any running VM and be identified as a hardware outage.
The VMs instances recovery process in such a scenario is to boot the instance
since all of them have crashed.
The only task that triggers a VM live migration is to put the host into
Maintenance mode.

[ovirt-users] Re: [External] : Turn on my host

2023-02-13 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi Anthony,

I suppose you tried to turn the KVM host off using the Engine portal.
If using a direct ssh connection to the KVM host and issuing the "systemctl
poweroff" or "reboot" commands, the Engine application will detect the reboot
as a hardware failure.
In this scenario, the Engine cannot migrate instances to another KVM host.
To power down or reboot a KVM host, at first put it into Maintenance mode using
the Engine portal.
Then you can power off or reboot the host using the Engine or through command
line.

2023-02-03 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi Mike,

I assume you are building a lab since using VMs to install a Virtualization
Solution will not offer the minimum performance desired for the solution.
As a lab, I recommend you to use two VMs, one for the Engine installing it as a
stand-alone Engine and the second to act as an hypervisor. Remember to
configure nested virtualization for this VM on VMware.
When you get more familiar with oVirt, you can move to physical servers where
installing the Self-Hosted-Engine will be easier.

[ovirt-users] Re: CPU Shares

2023-02-03 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi Nick,

Setting CPU Shares only changes how the instance works. It does not affect the
current workload unless the instance is under pressure.
For example, if you are running an RDBMS, you may see a performance improvement
when normalizing the database or generating a monthly report. Even that, the
improvement may be minimum.
Do not expect a sensible performance improvement for normal operation.
Performance tuning is not magic. You will often perform many configurations to
see a 1%, maybe 2% gain.

Subject: [External] : [ovirt-users] CPU Shares

Hello,

I would like some help understanding CPU shares. We have several VMs which are
CPU pinned due to licensing. We would like to favor one VM since it is our
application VM over the other VMs which it is pinned with. Would I set the CPU
share on the one that needs to priority to high or low?

In the documentation I see the following:

Specify CPU Shares. Possible options are Low, Medium, High, Custom, and
Disabled. Virtual machines set to High receive twice as many shares as Medium,
and virtual machines set to Medium receive twice as many shares as virtual
machines set to Low. Disabled instructs VDSM to use an older algorithm for
determining share dispensation; usually the number of shares dispensed under
these conditions is 1020.

I currently have it set to high and I believe it is doing the opposite of what
I want it to do as the CPU steal percentage appears to be 10-15% over the other
VMs which show no CPU steal and are set to low. I'd like to confirm if I have
this setup correctly or not.

Thanks,
Nick

From your description, you have the oVirt installed on a different LAN segment

Subject: [External] : [ovirt-users] oVirt Engine Web Console

Hi Everyone,

Newbie here.

Ive managed to get an oVirt host and Engine installed, what I am not able to do
is access the engine web console, is there a particular port I need to use??

Also, I am can only ping and access the engine host via SSH from hosts on the
same VLan, the default GW is set correctly on the engine VM, not sure what is
going on?

TIA

[ovirt-users] Re: [External] : Re: Self-hosted-engine timeout and recovering time

2022-09-21 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi Did,

Thanks for your comments.
Yes, I do have redundancy for network and storage connections.
I`m testing a catastrophic scenario of losing all communication from a host and
having a crashed host on which the SHE runs.
I intend to understand what to expect from running VMs and the Engine
application.
As you said, all VMs running on other hosts keep running without impacting them.
I will try to collect more information from the logs and understand the
reference codes and constants you mentioned.
Thanks again for your help.

I suppose you have redundancy in your network.

It's important to clarify (for yourself, mainly) what exactly you test, what's
important, what's expected, etc.

I suggest studying the ha-agent logs, /var/log/ovirt-hosted-engine-ha/agent.log.

Much of the relevant code is in ovirt_hosted_engine_ha/agent/states.py
(in the git repo, or under /usr/lib/python3.6/site-packages/ on your machine).

> Also, there took a relatively long time to take over the HA VMs from the

That's a separate issue, about which I personally know very little.
You might want to start a separate thread about it.

I do know, though, that if you keep the storage connected, the host might be
able to keep updating VM leases on the storage. See e.g.:

https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.ovirt.org/develop/release-management/features/storage/vm-leases.html__;!!ACWV5N9M2RV99hQ!KF3i9SPDHIMQrdvgAH0oYZq2WWUuuJh_n-h9jSrpeG1Ppvek5ZamgKXusC2ixiZhSUmqaL8MCljMw1zY$

I didn't check the admin guide, but I suppose it has some material about HA VMs.

> Is there a configuration where I can reduce the SHE timeout to make this
> recover process faster?

IIRC there is nothing user-configurable.

You can see most relevant constants in
ovirt_hosted_engine_ha/agent/constants.py{,.in}.
Nothing stops you from changing them, but please note that this is somewhat
risky, and I strongly suggest to do very careful testing with your new
settings. It might make sense to try to methodically go through all the
possible state changes in the above state machine.

The general assumption is that network and storage, for critical setups, are
redundant, and that the engine itself is not considered critical, in the sense
that if it's dead, all your VMs are still alive. And also, that it's more
important to not corrupt VM disk images (e.g. by starting the VM concurrently
on two hosts) than to keep the VM alive.

Best regards,

[ovirt-users] Self-hosted-engine timeout and recovering time

2022-09-20 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi all,

I have a cluster running the 4.4.10 release with 6 KVM hosts and
Self-Hosted-Engine.
I'm testing some network outage scenarios, and I faced strange behavior.
After disconnecting the KVM hosts hosting the SHE, there was a long timeout
until switching the Self-Hosted-Engine to another host as expected.
Also, there took a relatively long time to take over the HA VMs from the
failing server.
Is there a configuration where I can reduce the SHE timeout to make this
recover process faster?

You can upload the disk to the desired store domain and attach it to the guest

I upload the qcow2 image to the storage domain and attach it to the VM using

Also, you upload the KVM guest disk as a template.

So one thing that hasnt been clear for me is method for importing KVMs and QCOW

I have had some success with importing some VMs in KVM format by building a VM
of same size and then replacing the image file based on its disk ID.

My issue so far has been with some premade qcow and sometimes KVMs dont
successfully work with the above method. Is it not possible to simply upload to
the disk page in the GUI and attach it to the VM, what am I doing wrong here?

[ovirt-users] Re: [External] : Does memory ballooning works if memory overcommit is disabled in the cluster

2022-03-03 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi Sohail,

Memory ballooning is enabled by checking the "Enable Memory Balloon
Optimization" checkbox, which can keep VMs' performance.
If left unchecked, any pressure on host memory may trigger swap usage inside
VMs.
You can leave it unchecked if you have more memory than assigned to all VMs.
Consider that memory ballooning and KSM are only used when a host reaches a
certain amount of memory use. They are designed to keep your hosts' and VMs'
performance, avoiding bottlenecks.
Even not setting an optimization policy (overcommit) for Servers or Desktops,
enabling Memory Ballooning and KSM can keep your environment performance at its
best.

Hi All,

We have one ovirt 4.4 environment running. In Cluster Optimization settings we
have checked "None - Disable memory overcommit" Option in Memory Optimization.
But Memory Balloon check box option is enabled. My understanding is that
Ballooning only works when memory overcommit is enabled. If it is true then
this check box should be disabled when we are not overcommitting memory. Or
Still memory ballooning works even if we disabled memory overcommit. According
to below link ballooning works when memory overcommit is enabled.

I have oVirt Node v4.4.8.3 running on several HP ProLiant Gen8 servers. I
receive the following error under certain circumstances:
"An Unrecoverable System Error (NMI) has occurred (iLO application watchdog
timeout NMI, Service Information: 0x002B, 0x)"

When a host starts taking a load (but nowhere near a threshold), I encounter
the above iLO-logged error and the host locks-up. I have had to grossly
under-utilize my hosts to avoid this problem. I'm hoping for a better fix or
work-around.

I've had the same problem beginning with my oVirt 4.3.x hosts, so it isn't
oVirt version specific.

The little information I could find on the error wasn't helpful. Red Hat
acknowledges the issue, but limited to shutdown/reboot operations; not during
"normal" operations.

Anyone else experienced this problem? How did you fix it or work around it?
I'd like to better utilize my servers if possible.

In advance, thank you to anyone and everyone who offers help.

[ovirt-users] Re: Virt-sysprep --update --network

2021-11-16 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi Nathanaël,

With virt-sysprep, it is possible to install a package, update your template,
activate a network connection, have SELinux relabel your system, and change
other options.
Also is highly recommended to boot your template to ensure every last-minute
change is working fine.
Before sealing the template, people use it to make all changes (update, package
installation, user creation, network connections activation, etc…).
On the other hand, you can modify those options with virt-sysprep and launch an
instance based on the template to validate your changes.
It is up to you to decide how to prepare your VM to seal/template it.

Hi Nur,

ntpd has a 300sec limit for synchronization. If you want a more flexible NTP
client, use chronyd.
If you prefer to use ntpd, you should have ntpdate as a boot client and ntpd as
a runtime client.
When the server boots, the ntpdate client will sync time no matter the
difference. As a boot client, it runs only once and exits. Then the ntpd
service starts, and keep your server clock in sync with an external source.
On distributions like CentOS and similar, ntpdate reads the external time
sources configuration from ntpd.conf. You should need booth packages and
services installed and enabled:
I prefer chronyd since it does not need any extra service or procedure to keep
clock synchronization.

Indeed I did a `dd` inside a VM to measure the Gluster disk performance. I've
also tried `dd` on an hypervisor writing into one of the replicated gluster

I know this issue was already treated on this mailing list. However none of the

where 'gluster-ov{1,2,3}' are domain names referencing nodes in the gluster
network. This networks has 10Gbps capabilities :

[ovirt-users] Re: Time Drift Issues

2021-09-07 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi Nur,

ntpd has a 300sec limit for synchronization.

Marcos

Hi All,

Recently I got an warning in our cluster about time drift :
Host x has time-drift of 672 seconds while maximum configured value is 300

What should I do to address this issue ? Should I reconfigure / configure ntp

Thanks before.

[ovirt-users] Re: [External] : Fencing ilo4

2021-08-27 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi,

You can only use the test feature through the Administration Portal after
having one KVM host up and running.
So, for the fence feature to work properly, your oVirt environment needs to
have, at least, two hosts.
The correct procedure is:
- add kvm host1;
- add kvm host2 and configure its power management and test, if you wish;
- go back to kvm host1 and configure its power management and test.

The test fails with only one kvm host because the fence feature is designed to
be executed by another host and the test simulates a real scenario.

Hi Tommy,

I have no simple answer to your question since I did not need this before, but
some questions may help us understand how it is currently working.
1st- Are you using an ovirt-node or an OS+vdsm as a hypervisor?
2nd- Did you enabled huge pages on the VM OS?
3rd- Did you check on the hypervisor OS if transparent hugepages (THP) is
enabled? And if, after enabling/configuring hugepages in the VM, it is
reporting hugepages are in use in the host?

If I need to set the huge page on the VIRTUAL machine, do I also need to set

What best practices do you recommend?

[ovirt-users] Re: [External] : Injecting VirtIO drivers : Query

2021-08-25 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi Kris,

The VirtIO drivers' injection is necessary to use high-performance devices like
virtIO disks (virtio or virtio-SCSI) and virtio network interfaces.
If planning to use emulated devices, these drivers are not necessary.
In general, I do not import VMs to OpenStack. I prepare my specific OpenStack
instances (Linux, Windows, and Solaris ) using a KVM host and installing virtio
native drivers.
For migration, you can install the VirtIO drivers before exporting VMs or use
this injection process.
Regarding importing a multi-disk instance into OpenStack, you may refer to
glance documentation. But, as you are migrating a VM, I think this process will
be an exception to importing disk by disk and adding it manually to your new
OpenStack instance.

Once the KVM host is part of an oVirt cluster, many interactions come from the
VDSM service.
It would help if you used a different KVM host for this kind of procedure.

If so, can I still run it on KVM Server fn the oVirt platform?
It seems that a lot of oVirt's configuration information is not stored in
QUEMU's configuration file like ordinary KVM SERVER, but in the database. Does
this still work?

One important thing, you run the virt-sysprep command on the KVM host
indicating the VM name to seal, you do not run it inside a VM.
It is not like the sysprep command on a Windows machine.

Yes, ovirt manages your environment and such does for you some of the
operations to ease you from doing it manually.
When you create a template in ovirt you may or may not set the sealing option.
In the bottom line it will run virt-sysprep with the parameters we thought are
right.
Note the documentation in the thread, for windows OS you will need to do it

You have two options:
- If installing the VM using a pxe environment/network server, you can add
this options as kernel_extra boot options at the Run Once install procedure.
- if installing the VM using an ISO image, edit the install menu entry and add
this option at the end of line.

The naming convention is called BiosDevName and was introduced in kernel
2.6.27. It is defined by the OS kernel you are using in the guest. It is not
related to oVirt itself or the KVM host.
In my case, I install my VMs passing "biosdevname=0 net.ifnames=0" during the
OS installation process, so all my VMs have ethX name style to make it easier
to use cloud-init and other scripts.

Everybody is good!
As you all know, to use the client's network card name in cloud-init, you must
fill in the exact name of the network card interface.
This was easy in version 7 and before, which usually started with EN0.

After version 8, however, the naming conventions for network cards changed a
lot. In my own test environment, for example, I started with ENS3.
I'm not sure what naming convention it uses, which would make it impossible to
specify nic information using cloud-init.

Could you help me explain how to deal with this problem?
Thank you very much!

Also Veeam announced oVirt support last May.
I did see anyone using or testing Veeam on OLVM or oVirt.

Hiya,

The API in oVirt engine actually supports creating snapshots etc. for backups.
Check out github for scripts, i.e.:

https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://github.com/luisperezmarin/oVirtVMBackup__;!!ACWV5N9M2RV99hQ!aLktcN2ZyTyy0Qa70UDbLPzKdU3VKYHfL6zBVWy0NNo0M8tkjN1NVxSDMfDmLnboxA8$

And there are others.

There is also a commercial solution, Storware vProtect:

And as far as backup systems go, bareos(open source) is an ok solution, and it
also support oVirt:

[ovirt-users] Re: [External] : about the network name rules on CentOS/Redhat 8 and the cloud-init network interface name

2021-08-24 Thread Marcos Sungaila
The naming convention is called BiosDevName and was introduced in kernel
2.6.27. It is defined by the OS kernel you are using in the guest. It is not
related to oVirt itself or the KVM host.
In my case, I install my VMs passing "biosdevname=0 net.ifnames=0" during the
OS installation process, so all my VMs have ethX name style to make it easier
to use cloud-init and other scripts.

Subject: [External] : [ovirt-users] about the network name rules on
CentOS/Redhat 8 and the cloud-init network interface name

Everybody is good!
As you all know, to use the client's network card name in cloud-init, you must
fill in the exact name of the network card interface.
This was easy in version 7 and before, which usually started with EN0.

After version 8, however, the naming conventions for network cards changed a
lot. In my own test environment, for example, I started with ENS3.
I'm not sure what naming convention it uses, which would make it impossible to
specify nic information using cloud-init.

Could you help me explain how to deal with this problem?
Thank you very much!

[ovirt-users] Re: [External] : Re: Template for Ubuntu 18.04 Server Issues

2021-08-24 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi Miguel,

The virt-sysprep command seals a VM when building it on a standalone KVM host.
Creating a template using the Make Template option in the VMs page
automatically seals the VM during this process.
Anyway, in a standalone KVM host, gracefully shut down the VM and run the
command as follows:

# virt-sysprep -d

Marcos

I have seen the same problem. Even confirmed that MAC address are different on
VM's. I am using a DSHP server.

How do you use the virt-sysprep command? is executed from ovirt-master / vm?
how do you select the template though?

I'm at the same point as you, not sure if this is expected behave or missing
something.

[ovirt-users] Re: [External] : Re: Is it possible to configure the wireless network card on the Linux host as the bridge to provide oVirt for use?

2021-08-23 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Tommy,

I remember I used the doc from Debian page as a starting point and adapted to
Fedora.
I deactivated the NetworkManager on the WLAN interface and prepared many
commands to add to rc.local.
I remember I had issues with routing when using NAT network (it was a KVM host
only, not an oVirt instance) despite it woked fine with bridge connections.

I will look if I have a copy in my old backups. It was a long time ago.

Thank you!

Could you give me some guide doc ?

Moreover, my use environment is only for testing functions and does not involve
security issues. I just want to make full use of physical resources.

Hi Tommy,

Two comments for your appreciation:

1st: Technically, it is possible. You can configure your wireless network as a
bridge and use it as you wish. I did it in my laptop a long time ago to test
KVM instances.
2nd: Taking security in focus, it is not a recommendation to use wireless cards
in servers. Wireless connections can be easily attacked since there is no need
for someone to have logical access to your server.

Marcos

Hi,
In my little experience, no you can't, I tried that a while ago it didn't work,
there is some old tutorial on Debian but it didn't work for me.
May be what you can do is share you wireless connexion with your wired
connexion (where you can create your bridge). And play with the firewall to
expose the ovirt webadmin-ui to your external network.

2021-05-17 Thread Marcos Sungaila
Hi Pavel,

You can only test a fence device after having one active node at that cluster.
In other words, install/activate host1 and have it up and running.
Go to install host2 and configure Power Management for this host. Having host1
already active it will be used to test host2 power management.
Go back to host1 and configure power management and test it too.

I know it looks weird but ovirt needs at least one active host to test power
management of new hosts.

Hello,
I am having trouble configuring fencing on these two servers with iDrac7 module
from freshly installed oVirt 4.4.6. I tried drac5, drac7 and ipmilan modules
and neither passes the test. I used ipmilan with option "lanplus=1", as noted
in previous threads about idrac usage with oVirt/RHEV, but with no success.
Also, I am successfully using ipmilan fencing from older oVirt 4.2 on several
SuperMicro server nodes.

This is the error message in engine.log:
2021-05-14 09:28:41,185+02 ERROR

I can successfully query the idrac module with ipmitool from command line on
the node, using the same credentials.
