Re: [ovirt-users] Automatically migrate VM between hosts in the same cluster

2015-09-17 Thread matthew lagoe
There are PDU’s that you can monitor power draw per port and that would kind of
tell you if a PSU failed as the load would be 0

Subject: Re: [ovirt-users] Automatically migrate VM between hosts in the same
cluster

I don't really think this is practical:

- If the PSU failed, your UPS could alert you. If you have one...

If you have only one PSU in a host, a UPS is not going to stop you losing all
the VMs on that host. OK, if you had N+1 PSUs, you may be able to monitor for
this (IPMI/LOM/DRAC etc)and use the API to put a host into maintenance. Also a
lot of people rely on low-cost white-box servers and decide that it's OK if a
single PSU in a host dies, as, well, we have HA to start on other hosts. If
they have N+1 PSUs in the hosts do they really have to migrate everything off?
Swings and roundabouts really.

I'm also not sure I've seen any practical DC setups where a UPS can monitor the
load for every single attached physical machine and figure out that one of the
redundant PSUs in it has failed - I'd love to know if there are as that would
be really cool.

- If the machine is going down in an ordinary flow, surely it can be done.

Isn't that what "Maintenance mode" is for?

Even if it was a network failure and the host was still up, how would you live
migrate a VM from a host you can't even talk to?

It could be suspended to disk (local) - if the disk is available.

Then the decision if it is to be resumed from local disk or not (as it might be
HA'ed and is running elsewhere) need to be taken later, of course.

Yes, but that's not even remotely possible with Ovirt right now. I was trying
to be practical as the OP has only just started using Ovirt and I think it
might be a bit much to ask him to start coding up what he'd like.

The only way you could do it was if you somehow magically knew far enough in
advance that the host was about to fail (!) and that gave enough time to
migrate the machines off. But how would you ever know that "machine
quux.bar.net is going to fail in 7 minutes"?

I completely agree there are situations in which you can't foresee the
failure.

But in many, you can. In those cases, it makes sense for the host to
self-initiate 'move to maintenance' mode. The policy of what to do when
'self-moving-to-maintenance-mode' could be pre-fetched from the engine.

Y.

Hmm, I would love that to be true. But I've seen so many so called
"corner-cases" that I now think the failure area in a datacenter is a fractal
with infinite corners. Yes, you could monitor SMART on local drives, pick up
uncorrected ECC errors, use "sensors" to check for sagging voltages or high
temps, but I don't think you can ever hope to catch everything, and you could
end up doing a migration "storm" for . I've had more than enough of "Enterprise
Spec" switches suddenly going nuts and spamming corrupt MACs all over the LAN
to know you can't ever account for everything.

I think it's better to adopt the model of redundancy in software and services,
so no-one even notices if a VM host goes away, there's always something else to
take up the slack. Just like the origins of the Internet - the network should
be dumb and the applications should cope with it! Any infrastructure that can't
cope with the loss of a few VMs for a few minutes probably needs a refresh.

Cheers

Alex

It is possible to migrate a VM from 6 to 7 it is recommended however that
you don't do a live migration and that you power off the VM and then turn
it back on on the cluster running version 7

Groten, Ryan ryan.gro...@stantec.com wrote:

Has anyone succeeded in upgrading their hosts OS version from 6 to 7? I

I then tried making a new Cluster and migrating VMs from the RHEL6 cluster
to RHEL7. Initial testing seems to show that it works from RHEL6 to RHEL7
but not the other way around. Also when I select this option a warning
pops up saying Choosing different cluster may lead to unexpected results.
Please consult documentation.

I looked in the Admin Guide and Technical Reference Guide but don't see
where these unexpected results are mentioned.

Hi,

Would it be possible add the io stats of a vm into ovirt-guest-agent for making
that data available in the interface of oVirt?

I could help out by getting the stats into the client package, the server side
would be a bigger issue to me.

You can sort of get the io from something like Nagios however the problem is if
the vm goes wacky you can only get the stats properly from a lower level

With zfs you can use sync=disabled to enable async on the storage side as well

With about 100 vm’s running I get roughly 1400 iops write and 2230 read with
about 600MBps read and 220 write running the tests from a windows 2008 r2 vm.

Hi Donny (and everyone else who uses NFS-backed storage)

You mentioned that you get really good performance in oVirt and I am curious
what you use for your NFS options in exportfs? The 'async'
option fixed my performance issues, but of course this would not be a
recommended option in a production environment, at least unless the NFS
server was running with a BBU on the RAID card.

Just curious. Thanks! :-)

Re: [ovirt-users] All in one question

2015-08-03 Thread Matthew Lagoe
Since the storage is NFS it really doesn’t matter where it is located at so
long as all hosts can talk to it via ip

Basically if you have the nfs storage locally or otherwise you can simply add
another host to the datacenter and then you should be able to use the storage
across the new host

Keep in mind you will need to make it so the external host is able to access
the nfs share

Hi guys,

Please excuse this if it sounds like a dumb question, it's my first time doing
an All-in-one oVirt installation

I've installed the All-in-one on one physical machine, and configured this as a
host in the cluster, and my intention was to use local NFS storage as the
primary storage domain for the VM's, but then add a second host to the cluster
which would access this NFS primary storage domain on the original All-in-one
installation...

After doing the install when I log in I see that when you do an All-in-one
install you end up with a local_cluster as well as a Default cluster and
you can't add another host to the local_cluster, so it appears I'll need to
add the second host to the Default which I'm assuming means I won't be able
to share the primary NFS storage between the two clusters and I won't get live
migration between my two physical hosts across the clusters?

Could anyone confirm if my assumptions are correct please?

Thank you!

Regards.

Neil Wilson.

Hi Mathew,

Wow, thank you very much for the quick response!

I've gone ahead and tried to do what you've suggested, but I'm a bit confused
as to how the storage is going to work...

If I add the storage domain on the Local datacenter, then I can only choose
local_storage and then when I try add this storage as NFS, ovirt says the
storage domain isn't empty (which it isn't) so I'm confused as to how both
hosts will work together on the same storage domain?

All I'm wanting to achieve is a two host cluster with NFS storage from one
host, is it not over complicating things using the AllinOne installation?

Thank you, and apologies if I've perhaps misunderstood.

Regards.

Neil Wilson.

Re: [ovirt-users] Storage QOS

2015-07-19 Thread Matthew Lagoe
I don't have permissions to see that bug :(

The exact steps I did was add a qos policy for storage to the datacenter,
then I assigned the qos policy to the disk that was used to create the vm's
that I have on my system.

The vm's were running, do I need to shutdown the vm's before I assign the
qos policy?
