[Users] oVirt vdsm network problem
Hello, I found strange problem in vdsm 4.13.0 with oVirt 3.3.1. After 30 hours from update (ovirt -> 3.3.1, vdsm -> 4.13) my one vlan network does not work. There is nothing in log, I can see network trafic from not working vlan on node in tcpdump, but it not come to VM. After vdsm restart on node it works like expected. I take a look in to oVirt -> Host -> Network Interface and all nodes has bond interface changed from "Mode 4 Dynamic link agregation" to "Custom: mode=4" and Custom mode is filled by "mode=4" Mabe it is the same, but who change that? I can have one node in this status if someone will want more info or logs. ___ Users mailing list Users@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users

Hi Bob, you can try the following command: engine=# delete FROM storage_server_connections where connection = '172.16.0.58:/export/VM_EXPORTDOMAIN'; this should allow you re-create your storage domain. A few things we are curious about but can't find any concrete information on: Can oVirt live migrate data (VM's, etc.) to another machine in the pool/cluster in the event of a hardware failure, if the data is stored locally on the machine? For this to be possible, does it have to be on a shared storage? not yet. live storage migration is currently only supported between storage domains in same storage pool (data center) where the host see both domains. we are working to remove the limitations in the pool design, which will allow this in a future version. oVirt supports managing VMs in host local storage, but the more powerful features are around clusters of hosts using shared storage. shared storage these days can benefit from multiple hosts local storage, via technologies like gluster, though at this point i think most run the storage nodes separatly from the virtualization hosts. NFS shared storage seems to be the easiest, iscsi, FC and posixfs are also supported. HTH, Itamar ___ Users mailing list Users@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users
[Users] RFE/Bug? Cloud-Init in oVirt 3.3.1 / IPv6 Support
Hi, currently, you can not set a static network via Cloud-Init. How to reproduce: Select a shutdown vm, click run once. Click Initial Run, select Cloud-Init Now select "Network" and "add new" Name your interface, e.g. eth0 Do not configure DHCP, instead, fill in IP Address, Netmask, Gateway, etc. I would suppose that this would pass the following options into the meta-data: iface eth0 inet static but if you mount the meta-data cd-rom into any vm and read the meta-data.json it says: iface eth0 inet none the rest of the information seems to be correct, though. You can see this from 2 point of views: 1. If I do not select DHCP and I configure IP Address etc. I want a static configuration, therefore "static" should be in the meta-data. If I would have wanted "none", I wouldn't bother configuring the interface, would I? -> Bug 2. There is no button for "static" in the GUI, therefore the option get's not passed, "none" may be the default option. In this case, it would be cool to have a checkbox for "static". --> RFE I didn't test this from the API yet, but I hope there is an option to set the networking to static from there? What do you think? Bug or RFE? Can this be fixed in 3.3.1.1 maybe (fix should be small, without looking into the code)? I can't always do full upgrades (3.3.2 would be next). My second topic would be IPv6 Support: It simply does not exist in Cloud-Init to pass this option to the guest, I read this old thread: http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/engine-devel/2013-June/004893.html My Question: Are there any plans to improve this? I will work around it maybe through custom parsing and file injecting the IPv6 data through Cloud-Init, but would prefer to pass this information simply to Cloud-Init. -- Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Regards Sven Kieske Systemadministrator Mittwald CM Service GmbH & Co. Resend to the list for others to benefit, I hope :-) Joop On 27-11-2013 18:18, Ted Miller wrote: I am trying to set up a testing network using o-virt, but the networking is refusing to cooperate. I am testing for possible use in two different production setups. My previous experience has been with VMWare. I have always set up a single bridged network on each host. All my hosts, VMs, and non-VM computers were peers on the LAN. They could all talk to each other, and things worked very well. There was a firewall/gateway that provided access to the Internet, and hosts, VMs, and could all communicate with the Internet as needed. o-virt seems to be compartmentalizing things beyond all reason. That is a way to use oVirt, but the following simple setup should work and give you a way to check against your setup. I have two setups, one at home and one at work. The one at home is a setup of 2 hosts and one of those is a hacked up host/engine. engine/host1: standard fedora19 kde install, static ip (192.168.1.11) configured with my NAS (192.168.1.16) as dhcp/dns server and my internet router (192.168.1.254) as gateway Just make sure that NetworkManager is off and that your interfaces are not NM managed, network on. This was a allinone setup but I got a NAS with NFS so I turned my aio setup into a engine/host system. It has problems with that but nothing network related. Host2: same as above but without the engine install, ip:192.168.1.22, gw 192.168.1.254 DNS:192.168.1.16. How does it all come together? Well in your case, and mine if I were to start over, start with a static network which is NOT managed by NetworkManager. Use either Fedora or Centos which ever you more comfortable with and it also depends on whether you want to test/use all the features in oVirt. Currently, there are a few features not available in Centos because the versions of libvirt/kvm/qemu/gluster are too old in Centos. Install ovirt-engine on your first 'server', probably choose NFS as your storage domain, either on your engine server or from somewhere else on your network. Make sure its nfs-v3 and not v4!, local default is v4! Make sure that ip addresses on you network are resolvable, either through /etc/hosts or through DNS! Engine-setup will complain if this doesn't work, using localhost will not work either! On the engine server there will be no bridge and nothing will change the network config. Next the first host. Prepare the host in a similar way you did the engine server. You can choose a minimal install of either Centos or Fedora or install a full desktop but make sure that ips are static and NOT managed by NetworkManager, hostname resolvable, ovirt repo available. From the webui add your prepared host and if everything went OK you'll see that on that host you will now have a bridge, ovirtmgmt, which acts as the primary interface. Create a VMs and choose ovirtmgmt as a network for its nics, can't choose anything else. Either give the VMs a static address or use a dhcp server but the VMs should be able to talk to each other, to the host(s), the engine and to the internet. Every host that you add after the first will also has its network turned into a bridge, ovirtmgmt, and communication/migration/display/etc will take place over this network. One caveat, storage domain mapping is from the host to the storage, the engine, if it is NOT the NFS server, doesn't have to have access to the storage. If you have servers with more that 1 nic then you can create additional networks using the webui of oVirt and assign these to clusters and to VMs. If you need vlans to coexist with ovirtmgmt on the same physical nic, I think that is possible but haven't tried it myself. In theory you need to setup the network first outside of oVirt, including you vlan structure and then install ovirt. Some concepts: oVirt engine: is just the manager, does 'nothing' related to running VMs itself. You can turn it off and all hosts with their VMs will keep running. You just can't start new ones, in short manage them. oVirt host: is the real workhorse and is managed using oVirt-engine. Runs VDSM which communicates with engine and starts/manages the VMs on the host on behalf of engine. oVirt node: is a special slimmed down Fedora distro that includes VDSM and a small setup so that it can be used as a oVirt host People tend to mix and match ovirt-host and ovirt-node which makes for nice communication problems :-) If you haven't done so, there is an irc channel, ovirt, on irc.oftc.net with helpful people, if they are awake. I believe that ovirt-3.4 must support it, and that ovirt-3.3.2 would better do so. Toni has fixed two issues regarding Vdsm-networking, and they are going into ovirt-3.3.2 beta. However, we must perform much more comprehensive testing. We'd need to have f20 Jenkins slave(s), and someone in each team responsible to testing functionality. Well, I reported the cloud-init bug. atm I write a helper script to parse the cloud-init data myself. virt-sysprep cannot set IP-Information beside the MAC out of the box, so this is also no solution. I feel like there must be made some huge efforts to be able to automate vm deployment. There is nothing in log, I can see network trafic from not working vlan on node in tcpdump, but it not come to VM. Did it stop working all of the sudden or did you change something? After vdsm restart on node it works like expected. Seems like VDSM restored configuration to last known config on that host, maybe there's something in vdsm.log to indicate what went wrong. I take a look in to oVirt -> Host -> Network Interface and all nodes has bond interface changed from "Mode 4 Dynamic link agregation" to "Custom: mode=4" and Custom mode is filled by "mode=4" Mabe it is the same, but who change that? Re: [Users] Installation fails on Fedora 19 - Failed to execute stage 'Closing up': Engine unreachable
Hi, I will need the entire setup log file and the entire engine.log. Also, please look into /var/lib/pgsql/data/pg_log/postgresql-*.log if there is something relevant. It is quite strange that the setup succeed in accessing database while the java application not. [Users] Gluster storage
Hello everybody, i'm successful using ovirt with 16 physical node, in a FC cluster with a very BIG dell compellent (and so expensive) enterprise storage ;) I'm researching a new architecture for a new cluster, and i want to understand more better the glusterFS integration in ovirt. As i understand you have to install a normal physical node, with also the glusterFS package… right ? after that you have to create a new cluster in ovirt , new datacenter and put in this new node. in that datacenter you can create a new data domain ( glusterFS ) that reside on that host. right ? and… after that ? ok i have 1 node that are also my " storage ", and if i want to all more compute node ? … every new compute node are a new " brick " for glusterFS so i can expand/redundant the first one ? i don't have the architecture very clear in my mind, and the documentation don't clarify the final architecture for this type of usage. Thanks for help guys Luke ___ Users mailing list Users@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users

Re: [Users] Self contained engine ETA
Hi Sandro I'm a bit confused on the storage requirements for the Self hosted engine. Some places say it requires NFS , other that i supports both GlusterFS and NFS. I'm interested in the GlusterFS option. Does hosted engine support GlusterFS on the same physical node as where the engine VM will reside(basically running both vdsm and gluster on the same physical host). If yes, can the hosted-engine --deploy create glusterfs or it has to be created manually prior and after engine install imported into Ovirt? Hi Liviu. For the current release hosted engine requires NFS. GlusterFS will be supported in the near future.
