This is generally done with a little dd magic. We'll start up the appliance in a virtual machine and mess with it in one way or another, then when we're done we'll take that image and use it to image our appliances that we send out. So we have this collection of some_system.img files laying around. With virt-manager I can just stick the image file in a storage pool somewhere, create a new vm, and attach the image. So my question is how is this done in ovirt. v2v and engine-upload-image all want a pre-configured vm to work with. That is not what I have. Is there anyway to do this? I thought it'd be something like drop an img onto the export domain, and import it, create a vm around it. Once done export the image back to the export domain and move it someplace to be useful. This is not the case as far as I can tell. Am I missing something? I was just looking at the same thing a few hours ago.. so far I've found two possible options: - Create the VM with your disk, find the uuid of that and dd your source image onto this newly created image - You should be able to manually create items in your export domain, they just need a metadata file. First is a VM export template and the second is an exported VM Oops, other way round.. Hi, I'm in the process of installing 3.4 RC(2?) on Fedora 19. I'm using hosted engine, introspective GlusterFS+keepalived+NFS ala [1], across six nodes. I have a layered networking topology ((V)LANs for public, internal, storage, compute and ipmi). I am comfortable doing the bridging for each interface myself via /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-*. Here's my desired topology: http://www.asciiflow.com/#Draw6325992559863447154 Here's my keepalived setup: https://gist.github.com/josh-at-knoesis/98618a16418101225726 I'm writing a lot of documentation of the many steps I'm taking. I hope to eventually release a distributed introspective all-in-one (including distributed storage) guide. I hope you'll publish it also on ovirt.org wiki :-) Looking at vm.conf.in http://vm.conf.in, it looks like I'd by default end up with one interface on my engine, probably on my internal VLAN, as that's where I'd like the control traffic to flow. I definitely could do NAT, but I'd be most happy to see the engine have a presence on all of the LANs, if for no other reason than because I want to send backups directly over the storage VLAN. I'll cut to it: I believe I could successfully alter the vdsm template (vm.conf.in http://vm.conf.in) to give me the extra interfaces I require. It hit me, however, that I could just take the defaults for the initial install. Later, I think I'll be able to come back with virsh and make my changes to the gracefully disabled VM. Is this true? [ovirt-users] Etherpad for ovirt issues?
Hi, Could I propose an option for an etherpad of basic issues people have run into with ovirt, split into a few categories like: - engine - hosted-engine - gluster The pad would be used for known workarounds (primarily for setup) and identifying issues before opening a BZ The main motive is, over the past few days I've redeployed my hosted-engine install about 10 times.. I've run into about 5-6 issues like bridge creation with the setup on vlans, or the use of prefix in ifcfg etc. - I've reported some of the main ones where I sort of know what the problem is, but quite a few I've just walked around it by doing things in a different order. - Quite a few times I've also opened a few BZs and by the time soneone's asked for a specific log, I've already reinstalled the host. (I just can't stand a dirty host :P ) - Sometimes I'm not sure if they should be considered a bug so just move on - Sometimes people (I mean I) get lazy - There's often sometimes things which don't work, are reported in the website but only get one line and often gets overlooked. Does it go readonly after a while? getting LVM volume group UUID overruns. Do you mean collisions here, or can you explain it a bit more. I'm using direct attach fiber channel, and everything looks good, but there appears to be some UUID or Volume group name in my list of LUNs that matches some sort of lvm key from the node root file system. This only happens on the node that I installed from the iso. I built all of these nodes in a vm, then set that image to boot. I did NOT copy that lun from one top the others, nor are any of the hosts luns visible from any of the other hosts. Not sure where to start. I'm going to reinstall from a bootable cd directly connected to my blade and see if that clears up the problem. Could you please explain abit more about your setup. If you have a SAN, an all LUNs of it are visible by all hosts, and you install Node on more than one host, then it could come to collisions. Yes, I have a SAN, The only LUNs visible to all hosts are guest luns. But apparently one of those guest luns has an LV named Root. When the VG Scan runs it picks up all of the volume groups on every lun, and seems to be using the LAST one it finds as the prefered drive. So in place of /dev/sda1 becoming the root, it seems some other partition from some other lan was chosen. I can't seem to track down which other lun yet. I can't seem to find a path between /dev/dm-31 and the actual partition it's using, only /dev/lvm-Root (or something..). Would have helped just a little if there had been a tool to edit/view GTP partitions btw. Given that it's a read only file system, I couldn't install them. Node is using some predefined LV names, e.g. Root, which will cause collisions if there are more LUNs with LVs which have the same name. yes... That's going to be a problem you know. There should be a way to choose the LV Name, or randomize it, add a namespace to it, or let the user do a different layout of their partitions. I think the namespace would solve a lot of problems. Using 'Root' as the VG name will always have a chance of colliding, in a direct attach setup. 'ovirt-node-root' on the other hand is probably pretty safe. Because lord only knows what one of the other people is going to drop out and try on some lun. thanks so much for the help. You cannot update it directly because it's version-locked. This is done to ensure that you do not run a newer engine with an older database - the main task engine-setup does during an upgrade is updating the database. I followed this anchor : http://www.ovirt.org/OVirt_3.4_Release_Notes#Fedora_.2F_CentOS_.2F_RHEL If you're upgrading from oVirt 3.3 you should just execute: # yum update ovirt-engine-setup # engine-setup == Then I tried the following command and it worked fine: engine-setup Didn't it tell you that there are updates to Setup and that you should first 'yum update ovirt-engine-setup'? Probably during your attempts you did update it. Well, according the output on prompt shell, there was no update : No Packages marked for Update Obviously, if it's already updated by your cron. Now my ovirt works fine, my cluster is running virtual machines on compatibility mode 3.3 although ovirt is now 3.4 Great :-) Then I ask : What is the necessity to execute yum update ovirt-engine-setup if when I execute only engine-setup this script search for updates ? engine-setup searches for both updates to the engine and to Setup itself. If it finds updates to Setup, it tells you to manually update it with yum. If it finds other updates it asks you to confirm updating and then updates. ok. thanks . [ovirt-users] List emails
Can anyone of the list managers check to see if my email address is on a block list? I had to re-enable mail delivery in my profile because it said that there were too many bounces. [ovirt-users] compatibility relationship between datacenter, ovirt and cluster
Hi, yesterday my ovirt was 3.3 my datacenter and cluster (compatibility version) was aligned with ovirt 3.3 today my ovirt is now 3.4. and my datacenter and cluster (compatibility version) remains 3.3 (with the option enabled to change for 3.4) browsing the ovirt admin page I see 2 occurrences of ovirt version: datacenter tab = 3.3 cluster tab =3.3 I would like to understand what means all these versions, the same version for a lot of important things, and how my ovirt works/behaves using different versions. all my doubts together : What means datacenter in version 3.3(or lower version) when ovirt is 3.4 ? what means cluster in version 3.3 when ovirt is 3.4? what means change the compatibility version for datacenter? what means change the compatibility version for cluster? thanks ___ Users mailing list Users@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users

Re: [ovirt-users] live migration and snapshot problem
Hi, I'm sorry, but - I don't know how - but at this moment everything ok. I can do live migrations beetwen hosts and the live snapshot things are displayed But, I didn't do anything... Sorry for this. Tibor - Eredeti üzenet - can you please attach engine, vdsm, libvirt, qemu and gluster logs from both the create snapshot and live migration actions. The data storage is a four brick distributed-replicated gluster storage. I got a virtual machine (centos 6.5) from the ovirt's openstack based template repository. Everything was good, the vm can run on any host, but the live migration doesn't work. Also, the snapshot feature is lost from menu. I can make live snapshot, but it doesn't show on the panel. [ovirt-users] Re-add a node
Hi, I don know i the subject is explicit enough but I have a problem and I hope to find some help here. I had two hosts in my cluster (node1 and node2). I had to reinstall node1 due to some networks problem. In the engine, node1 appears now Not reponsive and I can't remove it from the engine ui. Jason The cloud-init data is passed only to linux VMs. A new patch changed that, and passed it to all non-windows VMs, so if you left the defaults, and the OS type is Other OS, then it doesn't work without the patch. Hi all -- I've been trying, without success, to use cloud-init w/ oVirt 3.4 on Fedora 19 hosts. I've had similar failure in the past, but here are the steps I'm taking currently: 1. Import as template F19 image from ovirt-image-repository glance repo 2. Create new vm based on that template 3. Choose ovirtmgmt as the nic1 for the VM 4. Show advanced options, click initial run, expand authentication, enter a root password, paste my public key into the allowed ssh keys field 5. Hit OK, and then run the VM 6. In the VM's console, I see it complain about No instance datasource found 7. Unsurprisingly, I can't log in w/ pw or ssh. (By the way, are there any default creds for these images? I thought they might be based on the fedora cloud images, but their default uname fedora pw nothing doesn't work) I've tried some other derivations of this, launching from the Run Once menu, filling in various different fields, etc. Any clues? I don't see many people complaining about this, so I'm assuming it's working for other people. I don't know, maybe it's something with Fedora?
