One of the things that I have to where I work, is pull and push disk
images onto appliances and other physical things. This is generally
done with a little dd magic. We'll start up the appliance in a
virtual machine and mess with it in one way or another, then when
we're done we'll take that image and use it to image our appliances
that we send out. So we have this collection of some_system.img
files laying around. With virt-manager I can just stick the image
file in a storage pool somewhere, create a new vm, and attach the
image.

So my question is how is this done in ovirt. v2v and
engine-upload-image all want a pre-configured vm to work with. That is
not what I have. Is there anyway to do this? I thought it'd be
something like drop an img onto the export domain, and import it,
create a vm around it. Once done export the image back to the export
domain and move it someplace to be useful. This is not the case as far
as I can tell. Am I missing something?

I was just looking at the same thing a few hours ago.. so far I've
found two possible options:

- Create the VM with your disk, find the uuid of that and dd your
source image onto this newly created image
- You should be able to manually create items in your export domain,
they just need a metadata file.

First is a VM export template and the second is an exported VM

Oops, other way round..

easy:
the glance storage domain supports easy upload of images and import of
them as disks into the engine?

harder, but saves you the double copy:
you can also inject disks to an nfs storage domain, as long as you
keep the format and add the metadata correctly, then you can use the
rest api to 'register' them to the engine.

3.5 adds a GUI to import/register them, though you'd still need to
inject them correctly (probably we should write a utility doing that for
nfs domains).

For extending the VM disk, as Dafna mentioned, you should use the ovirt-engine
webadmin (via 'edit' disk).
If you'd like to extend your OS disk, there is a nice guide for that. it's not
an official guide AFAIK, but it works :)

Then I ask : What is the necessity to execute yum update ovirt-engine-setup
if when I execute only engine-setup this script search for updates ?

it is an egg and chicken... as the engine-setup comes from ovirt-engine-setup,
it cannot update the package while running and effect running process.

so if you run the engine-setup of V1, and within the package is updated to V2,
V2 has no effect as V1 keeps running.

there may be a very complex solutions for this issue, including delegate the
state to another instance of setup, but for now, the simplest method is to
update the setup packages before upgrading the product.

I tried update from yum, without success

 yum update {ovirt-engine-setup, ovirt-engine , ovirt-release and
 ovirt-release-el6 }

Where do you see instructions to update ovirt-engine? You cannot update
it directly because it's version-locked. This is done to ensure that
you do not run a newer engine with an older database - the main task
engine-setup does during an upgrade is updating the database.

Then I tried the following command and it worked fine: engine-setup

Didn't it tell you that there are updates to Setup and that you should
first 'yum update ovirt-engine-setup'? Probably during your attempts
you did update it.

Now my ovirt works fine, my cluster is running virtual machines on
compatibility mode 3.3 although ovirt is now 3.4

Great :-)

Then I ask : What is the necessity to execute yum update ovirt-engine-setup
if when I execute only engine-setup this script search for updates ?

engine-setup searches for both updates to the engine and to Setup itself.
If it finds updates to Setup, it tells you to manually update it with yum.
If it finds other updates it asks you to confirm updating and then updates.

 Failed command list execution

Most probably you did update ovirt-engine-setup at some point.

Subject: [Users] Post-Install Engine VM Changes Feasible?

 Hi,

I'm in the process of installing 3.4 RC(2?) on Fedora 19. I'm using
hosted engine, introspective GlusterFS+keepalived+NFS ala [1], across six
 nodes.

I have a layered networking topology ((V)LANs for public, internal,
storage, compute and ipmi). I am comfortable doing the bridging for each
 interface myself via /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-*.

 Here's my desired topology:
 http://www.asciiflow.com/#Draw6325992559863447154

 Here's my keepalived setup:
 https://gist.github.com/josh-at-knoesis/98618a16418101225726

I'm writing a lot of documentation of the many steps I'm taking. I hope
to eventually release a distributed introspective all-in-one (including
 distributed storage) guide.

I hope you'll publish it also on ovirt.org wiki :-)

Looking at vm.conf.in http://vm.conf.in, it looks like I'd by default
end up with one interface on my engine, probably on my internal VLAN, as
that's where I'd like the control traffic to flow. I definitely could do
NAT, but I'd be most happy to see the engine have a presence on all of the
LANs, if for no other reason than because I want to send backups directly
 over the storage VLAN.

I'll cut to it: I believe I could successfully alter the vdsm template
(vm.conf.in http://vm.conf.in) to give me the extra interfaces I require.
It hit me, however, that I could just take the defaults for the initial
install. Later, I think I'll be able to come back with virsh and make my
changes to the gracefully disabled VM. Is this true?

 Thanks,
 Joshua

Note that you should also be able to edit /etc/ovirt-hosted-engine/vm.conf

 - put the system in global maintenance
 - edit the vm.conf file on all the hosts running the hosted engine
 - shutdown the vm: hosted-engine --vm-shutdown
 - start again the vm: hosted-engine --vm-start
 - exit global maintenance

Giuseppe, Joshua: can you share your changes in a guide for Hosted engine
 users on ovirt.org wiki?

So would you simply just add a new line under the original devices line? ie.

 slot:0x03, domain:0x, type:pci,

Are there any good practices for getting the mac addr so it won't be
possible to clash with ones vdsm would generate? I assume the same
 applies for deviceid?
Did you also change the slot?

 This worked successfully:

Hi,

Using the new 3.4 public glance repository, I was able to
successfully
import the tiny 12mb CirrOS image and it appeared in my data store.

However when trying the larger CentOS image, it took much longer.
For
some reason I can only push 50Kbps from any of the ovirt
infrastructure so after many hours in the datastore I can see it's
finished downloading the full 1gb image but it'll remain locked in
the
ovirt engine.

Any thoughts on why this happens?

Thanks,
Andrew

[ovirt-users] new feature

Hi,

I'd like to notify you about new feature, which allows to specify distinct MAC
pools, currently one per data center.

(changed title to reflect content)

When specified mac ranges for given scope, where there wasn't any definition previously,
allocated MAC from default pool will not be moved to scoped one until next engine restart. Other
way, when removing scoped mac pool definition, all MACs from this pool will be moved to default
one.

cna you please elaborate on this one?

as for potential other scopes - i can think of cluster, vm pool and
logical network as potential ones.

one more question - how do you know to return the mac address to the
correct pool on delete?

For extending the VM disk, as Dafna mentioned, you should use the
 ovirt-engine webadmin (via 'edit' disk).
If you'd like to extend your OS disk, there is a nice guide for that.
it's not an official guide AFAIK, but it works :)

[ovirt-users] Etherpad for ovirt issues?

2014-04-10 Thread Andrew Lau
Hi,

Could I propose an option for an etherpad of basic issues people have
run into with ovirt, split into a few categories like:

- engine
- hosted-engine
- gluster

The pad would be used for known workarounds (primarily for setup) and
identifying issues before opening a BZ

The main motive is, over the past few days I've redeployed my
hosted-engine install about 10 times.. I've run into about 5-6 issues
like bridge creation with the setup on vlans, or the use of prefix in
ifcfg etc.

- I've reported some of the main ones where I sort of know what the
problem is, but quite a few I've just walked around it by doing things
in a different order.
- Quite a few times I've also opened a few BZs and by the time
soneone's asked for a specific log, I've already reinstalled the host.
(I just can't stand a dirty host :P )
- Sometimes I'm not sure if they should be considered a bug so just move on
- Sometimes people (I mean I) get lazy
- There's often sometimes things which don't work, are reported in the
website but only get one line and often gets overlooked.

Thoughts?

Please attach the engine, vdsm, libvirt and qemu logs from the event.

Thank you Sven,

I would avoid the engine rename process.

Trey,

If the internal network is not exposed to the Internet, only the engine SSL
certificate and key may be re-enrolled.

If you did not issue your own SSL certificate for the apache, execute the
following to create a new key/certificate out of the engine internal CA,
replace @PASSWROD@ with your own.

# cp -a /etc/pki/ovirt-engine /etc/pki/ovirt-engine.$(date +%Y%m%d)
# SUBJECT=$(openssl x509 -subject -noout -in
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/apache.cer | sed 's/subject= //')
# /usr/share/ovirt-engine/bin/pki-enroll-pkcs12.sh --name=apache
--password=@PASSWORD@ --subject=${SUBJECT}
# openssl pkcs12 -passin pass:@PASSWORD@ -nokeys -in
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/keys/apache.p12 /etc/pki/ovirt-engine/certs/apache.cer
# openssl pkcs12 -passin pass:@PASSWORD@ -nocerts -nodes -in

/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/keys/apache.key.nopass
# chmod 0600 /etc/pki/ovirt-engine/keys/apache.key.nopass

And restart apache.

 Hi,

as a first step, make sure to read and understand this page:
 http://www.ovirt.org/Features/PKI

There are different certificates for different things.

I have sadly no time to elaborate on this difficult topic.

But you may want restrict the access to your engine

I have already virt-preview enabled as this is an F19 AIO system so
that it is both engine and vdsm host and as from oVirt 3.4 release
notes on F19 host I had to enable it.
SO I think that it would not fix aso in general environment.
What I have tested is rhel7 beta guest on f20 system
The host has
qemu-kvm-1.6.2-1.fc20.x86_64
libvirt-1.1.3.4-3.fc20.x86_64
spice-server-0.12.4-3.fc20.x86_64

And I did get the multimonitor using remote-viewer
(virt-viewer-0.6.0-1.fc20.x86_64)

We have a recurrent bug of Engine not honoring Vdsm's supportedENGINEs.

The simplest hack to do is to add 4.14 to SupportedVDSMVersions in

I believe that there's work to fix this properly on Engine's side.

Re: [ovirt-users] vdsm dependency rsyslog?

Am 10.04.2014 12:04, schrieb Dan Kenigsberg:
Could you present (here, or on bugzilla) your use case for another

I'll do both (here and on BZ):
Usecase:

Well utilize existing log infrastructure which doesn't use
rsyslog, perhaps?
e.g. syslog-ng
furthermore: vdsms logging is configured via /etc/vdsm/logger.conf
and uses the python module logging:
https://docs.python.org/2/library/logging.html

this module is pretty cool, it allows you to redirect
your logging basically to wherever you like, including syslog services
or files, whatever.

so why restrict this builtin feature by adding a hard dependency
to a specific logging service?

I know it's done because it's built on red hat linux where rsyslog
is the default, and I don't want to say rsyslog is bad, it's just
not used by everybody.

As I understand there is work be done to port vdsm and engine
to different distros like debian/ubuntu and gentoo.

If you really want to port your software, keep it portable.
This means in the first place don't introduce dependencies
which aren't absolutely necessary.

This one isn't really necessary.
I can report to you that e.g. syslog-ng handles vdsm logs
well. ;)

It would be cool to be able to change the cd-rom

it doesn't look like a hard patch as it seems
to be already working for sysprep.

it would be cool to expose this via api.

Yes, I have a SAN, The only LUNs visible to all hosts are guest luns.
But apparently one of those guest luns has an LV named Root. When
the VG Scan runs it picks up all of the volume groups on every lun,
and seems to be using the LAST one it finds as the prefered drive. So
in place of /dev/sda1 becoming the root, it seems some other partition
from some other lan was chosen. I can't seem to track down which other
lun yet. I can't seem to find a path between /dev/dm-31 and the
actual partition it's using, only /dev/lvm-Root (or something..).
Would have helped just a little if there had been a tool to edit/view
GTP partitions btw. Given that it's a read only file system, I
couldn't install them.

Node is using some predefined LV names, e.g. Root, which will cause
collisions if there are more LUNs with LVs which have the same name.

yes... That's going to be a problem you know. There should be a way to
choose the LV Name, or randomize it, add a namespace to it, or let the
user do a different layout of their partitions. I think the namespace
would solve a lot of problems. Using 'Root' as the VG name will always
have a chance of colliding, in a direct attach setup.
'ovirt-node-root' on the other hand is probably pretty safe. Because
lord only knows what one of the other people is going to drop out and
try on some lun.

thanks so much for the help.

Actually /etc is mounted in tmpfs so not persistent:

cat /proc/mounts |grep etc

You can just as easily do a mount -o rw,remount / to edit things if you want

Subject: [ovirt-users] necessity to run yum update ovirt-engine-setup to
   update ovirt 3.4

   hello,

upgrade from ovirt 3.3 to 3.4
   following the steps on ovirt.org/OVirt_3.4_Release_Notes

I tried update from yum, without success

   yum update {ovirt-engine-setup, ovirt-engine , ovirt-release and
   ovirt-release-el6 }

Where do you see instructions to update ovirt-engine? You cannot update
it directly because it's version-locked. This is done to ensure that
you do not run a newer engine with an older database - the main task
engine-setup does during an upgrade is updating the database.

 I followed this anchor :
 http://www.ovirt.org/OVirt_3.4_Release_Notes#Fedora_.2F_CentOS_.2F_RHEL

If you're upgrading from oVirt 3.3 you should just execute:

 # yum update ovirt-engine-setup
 # engine-setup

 ==

Then I tried the following command and it worked fine: engine-setup

Didn't it tell you that there are updates to Setup and that you should
first 'yum update ovirt-engine-setup'? Probably during your attempts
  you did update it.

Well, according the output on prompt shell, there was no update : No
 Packages marked for Update

Obviously, if it's already updated by your cron.

Now my ovirt works fine, my cluster is running virtual machines on
compatibility mode 3.3 although ovirt is now 3.4

  Great :-)

Then I ask : What is the necessity to execute yum update
  ovirt-engine-setup
if when I execute only engine-setup this script search for updates ?

engine-setup searches for both updates to the engine and to Setup itself.
If it finds updates to Setup, it tells you to manually update it with yum.
If it finds other updates it asks you to confirm updating and then updates.

 ok. thanks .

   Failed command list execution
For each command yum update {ovirt-engine-setup, ovirt-engine ,
  ovirt-release
and ovirt-release-el6 } the result was the same :

   Loaded plugins: downloadonly, fastestmirror, refresh-packagekit,
  security,

   * extras: mirror.globo.com
   * ovirt-epel: mirror.globo.com
   * updates: mirror.globo.com
   Setting up Update Process
   No Packages marked for Update

Most probably you did update ovirt-engine-setup at some point.
If you want to further debug this, please look at and/or post your yum.log.

you are right. thanks. on april,6 my yumcron updated ovirt to 3.4. (just
 update, not setup)

Too bad that multiple monitors didn't work for you, too.

I'll test RHEL next - maybe this works better then Fedora...

I just tested CentOS 6.5 with Gnome desktop and 2 monitors aren't
working, too.
I can see 3 vdagent processes running in CentOS...

Short update from my side:
- RHEL 6.5 Workstation is working fine out of the box
- CentOS 6.5 is working now (there was no xorg-x11-drv-qxl package
installed in CentOS guest)

- Fedora is still not working due to open bugs

[ovirt-users] live migration and snapshot problem

2014-04-10 Thread Demeter Tibor
Dear members,

We made a test plaform for testing ovirt 3.4 features. We got four amd x2 4400+
machine with 2 gigs of ram and build a gluster based cluster. I set up an
amd-G2 based cluster.
I rebuild and installed the qemu-kvm-rhev package (
http://ftp.redhat.com/redhat/linux/enterprise/6Server/en/RHEV/SRPMS/qemu-kvm-rhev-0.12.1.2-2.415.el6_5.7.src.rpm
 ) .
The data storage is a four brick distributed-replicated gluster storage. I
got a virtual machine (centos 6.5) from the ovirt's openstack based template
repository.

Everything was good, the vm can run on any host, but the live migration doesn't
work. Also, the snapshot feature is lost from menu. I can make live snapshot,
but it doesn't show on the panel.

So:

- I lost the snapshots:)
- the live migration doesn't work.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance.

[ovirt-users] compatibility relationship between datacenter, ovirt and cluster

2014-04-10 Thread Tamer Lima
Hi,

yesterday my ovirt was 3.3
my datacenter and cluster (compatibility version) was aligned with ovirt
3.3

today my ovirt is now 3.4.
and my datacenter and cluster (compatibility version) remains 3.3 (with
the option enabled to change for 3.4)

browsing the ovirt admin page I see 2 occurrences of ovirt version:
datacenter tab = 3.3
cluster tab =3.3

I would like to understand what means all these versions, the same version
for a lot of important things, and how my ovirt works/behaves using
different versions.

all my doubts together :
What means datacenter in version 3.3(or lower version) when ovirt is 3.4 ?
what means cluster in version 3.3 when ovirt is 3.4?
what means change the compatibility version for datacenter?
what means change the compatibility version for cluster?

thanks

I don know i the subject is explicit enough but I have a problem and I hope

The cloud-init data is passed only to linux VMs.
A new patch changed that, and passed it to all non-windows VMs, so if
you left the defaults, and the OS type is Other OS, then it doesn't
 work without the patch.

  Subject: [Users] using cloud-init?

  Hi all --

I've been trying, without success, to use cloud-init w/ oVirt 3.4 on
 Fedora
19 hosts. I've had similar failure in the past, but here are the
 steps I'm
  taking currently:

  1. Import as template F19 image from ovirt-image-repository glance
 repo
  2. Create new vm based on that template
  3. Choose ovirtmgmt as the nic1 for the VM
  4. Show advanced options, click initial run, expand authentication,
 enter
a root password, paste my public key into the allowed ssh keys field
  5. Hit OK, and then run the VM
  6. In the VM's console, I see it complain about No instance
 datasource found
  7. Unsurprisingly, I can't log in w/ pw or ssh.

(By the way, are there any default creds for these images? I thought
 they
  might
be based on the fedora cloud images, but their default uname fedora
 pw
  nothing
  doesn't work)

I've tried some other derivations of this, launching from the Run
 Once menu,
filling in various different fields, etc.

  Any clues?

I don't see many people complaining about this, so I'm assuming it's
 working
for other people. I don't know, maybe it's something with Fedora?

  Thanks, Jason
