Is anyone minding the store ????

2009-02-18 Thread Lindsay Haisley
I've been getting bounce messages _to me_ from an address on the list,
in response to my posts, and apparently in violation of RFC 2822.

So I sent an email to users-ow...@spamassassin.apache.org and _that_
bounced. It seems that the registered owner of the list,
msquad...@gmx.net, is also an unknown user.

I would expect that a list devoted to making the Internet mail system
run to everyone's benefit rather than to everyone's detriment would be
operated in a more professional manner!

Is anyone minding the store

Step one:

Open mouth.

Step two, insert foot.

Guess I a getting them now, so its not you, but its not the list doing it.
It is some one who subscribed to the list. Their mail server is mucked up:

listowner: please unsubscribe john till he fixes his server. Any email to
john will bounce.

And, or, till then, block email from their server.

I was receiving similar messages until I blocked their source (and sent
postmaster a nice mail). They were related to SPF. I'm rejecting much mail
at smtp level so I can't confim if I there were such attempts unless you'll
tell me who's sending it...

haha now I got it too. Luckily it's listed in PYZOR and DCC, i submitted it
to RAZOR too although more ppl must apparently do that yet.

it hits BAYES_99 now and has DATE_IN_FUTURE_96_XX so it should score over 10
and be rejected here.

Michael, it's American slang for isn't there someone here responsible
for keeping things in order?. Sorry if it didn't communicate. It's
understandable to have lusers on a list (I admin several so I do know)
and even understandable, although regrettable, that there are MTAs and
MTA admins out there who don't understand RFCs 822 and 2822, what got
under my skin was writing to the list owner of this list and having
_that_ bounce. Oh well

I was receiving similar messages until I blocked their source (and sent

The problem address on the list is j...@redux.org.uk. The From header
on the bounces is mailer-dae...@linda.intranet which is obviously bogus,
likewise violating RFCs. The envelope sender on the bounces is ,
which is correct.

Yup, everyone posting to the list gets them...

So I sent an email to users-ow...@spamassassin.apache.org and _that_
bounced. It seems that the registered owner of the list,

How do you tell no one is in control? That is *one* in-operational
address. I'd expect the list-owner address to be monitored by more than
a single person.

GMX. *sigh* They don't like forwarding too much mail to their free
accounts. That forwarding just needs to be disabled.

Jumping to conclusions, aren't we?

In my experience so far -- Yes. Let's wait and see.

[...], please contact my owner at [...]. Please be patient, my owner
is a lot slower than I am ;-)

That is just expectation. Imho, if sending mail results to any error(bounce)
without indication that mail has been delivered to other user/address , we
may safely assume there is a problem and behave like that.

*nod* The infrastructure team reading this list is just expectation,
too, though.

Not sure about this particular detail, but generally there's an ASF
infrastructure team -- the projects don't do all that administrative
work on their own, and there is no strict per-project infrastructure.
