CVE referencing Tomcat are not also referencing Tomcat-embed

2023-09-06 Thread Francois Marot
Hello,

I'm in the process of switching from Dependency-check [1] to
Dependency-track [2] to analyse vulnerabilities on my dependencies.
I analyze a classic spring boot webapp depending upon
org.apache.tomcat.embed:tomcat-embed-core. Dependency Check who uses a kind
of fuzzy logic detects (correctly ?) CVEs (such as CVE-2023-28709 or
CVE-2023-41080).
Dependency-track uses exact matching with the artifact identifiers and does
not detect those CVE.
I imagine (not totally sure) that those CVE are also affecting
tomcat-embed-core and not only apache:tomcat, but it seems like they are
not targeting this "by product" of the classic Tomcat.

What is or should be the correct process ? Should the Tomcat team declare
those CVE as also affecting tomcat-embed-core ? Should the CVE people do
the job by themselves ?

I've just found out that I'm not the only one having those questions:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/74886946/vulnerablities-for-tomcat-embed-core-in-owasp-dependencytrack
but still looking for advice/guidance.

Best regards
Francois

Tomcat and negotiate auth-method

2010-05-10 Thread Francois Rigault
Hi

I was looking for information on how to enable single sign on on Tomcat
(I'm using Tomcat 5.5 on Unix) with the SPNEGO mechanism, more
specifically I would like to authenticate using a Kerberos ticket.

I found out that there is already an existing JAASRealm, which is able to
verify my credentials against a Kerberos authentication service - but
still I need to provide my credentials. There are also third party valves,
but I did not found any free one working on Unix that would support a
negotiate auth-method.

Has anyone ever configured a Tomcat server with seamless authentication ?
Is there a plan to support a negotiate auth-method integrated with tomcat
?

Thanks and regards

Francois

RE: RES: RES: Tomcat 6.0 on Windows Server 2003 IIS 6.0 connector not functioning

2007-05-15 Thread Jean-Francois Beaulac
Hi,

Just for the record, have you checked if isapi_redirect.dll is blocked by
Windows 2003 protection for files downloaded from the internet?

If you go in the properties of the dll file, and it is blocked, a big
unblock button will be shown. I had this problem on Windows Server 2003 in
both 32/64bits. The green arrow shows up, everything seems normal but it
won't work if it's blocked.

Hope that helps!

I tried adding the following lines to workers.properties from your config
files, Marcus,

worker.tomcat_home=C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 6.0
worker.java_home=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0

I tried using single quotes as well. I also tried your isapi_redirect.dll.
Thanks
for the contribution, but neither resolved the problem.

I think my next step will be to start over and use pathnames without
any spaces. It can't hurt anything at this point.

Can you think of anything I might be missing in the redirect settings?
It seems to me this is the most likely place for my error, since I'm

Since your original config looked OK, could you set your log level for
the isapi redirector to trace and log startup and a single test against
your configured status URL? Please post the results, so we can see, if
the URL got mapped, and why the request didn't get forwarded.

Hi Jean,

I could succesfully integrate IIS 6 with Tomcat (also 6), and you really
need an extra step to het it done:

Note that in IIS 6, there is a new item named 'Web Service Extension'. Right
click on it and then 'Add new Web Service Extension' . Name it jakarta and
point it to your isapi_redirect.dll location.

Doing that should solve your problem... Just let us know if it worked!

Yours,

Marcus

tomcat 5.5.20 and 1.1.3 of the Apache Tomcat Native library

2007-03-18 Thread francois
Hello,

I've installed from sources the 5.5.20 tomcat version.
Because I've read in tomcat's logs : The Apache Tomcat Native library
which allows optimal performance in production environments was not
found on the java.library.path, i've made the compilation of the
tomcat-native which was in the $CATALINA_HOME/bin directory.
When I've restarted the Tomcat server, i've read in the logs : INFO: An
older version 1.1.3 of the Apache Tomcat Native library is installed,
while Tomcat recommends version greater than 1.1.4.
It's only a recommendation. What could be the disadvantages of letting
things in this state ?
Which is the first version of Tomcat package that has the 1.1.4 version
of ATN lib intgrated in the tarball ?
Can a project member make the change to integrate the recommended
version (1.1.4) of ATN library in the 5.5.20 tomcat source tarball ?

François

Tomcat 5.x thread model

2006-09-14 Thread COURTAULT Francois
Hello,

I want to know what is the model used by Tomcat between the socket and
the thread ?

Is it one socket - one thread ? For example the communication between
one entity and a Tomcat instance uses HTTP 1.1 is establish by invoking

communication close): is it the same thread which processes the servlet
?

Is it configurable ?

Hi,
You can get and build a version from the Sbversion code
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/tomcat/tc6.0.x/trunk/
but I would rather use Glassfish currently since it is the official RI for JEE5.

org.apache.catalina.servlets.DefaultServlet won't deallocate

2006-08-01 Thread Jean-Francois Beaulac

Hi,

Sometimes when I reload/shutdown my application I see this error message in
tomcat's console window:
1-Aug-2006 3:06:50 PM org.apache.catalina.core.StandardWrapper unload
INFO: Waiting for 26 instance(s) to be deallocated

The number of instances is never the same.

I made myself a custom tomcat build and added some debug in
org.apache.catalina.core.StandardWrapper.unload() to know what class those instances belongs to. The
instances which cannot be deallocated are instances of org.apache.catalina.servlets.DefaultServlet.

Anybody has an idea of what could cause this?

Thank you

In fact it is finding these listeners (or the error message is

According to all different things I have seen on the internet they
sometimes talks about the classpath, however even if I add explicitely

the servlet-api.jar that is in $CATALINA_HOME/common/lib on the
classpath inside catalina.sh or on the system classpath that does not
change anything. And I doubt the problem comes from there since other
examples using classes relying on this packages works fine, only mine
crashes down not finding these classes.

Your application is searching in your webapps-environment and doesn't
find any Listener Have you tried to include the context-classees in your
webapps directory like this?
/webapps/your-Application/WEB-INF/classes/listeners/ContextListener.cl

Odd problem with Java Web service deployment

2006-07-03 Thread Remacle, F \(Francois\)
Hi everyone,

I am writing to this mailing list as my last chance because I am
completely stuck and cannot find solution to my problem anywhere on FAQ,
internet or other webresources.

Here is the problem, I am trying to deploy a very simple webservice
because I am new to webservice so I wanted to start simply. However when
I deploy it it won't start. My web.xml file is as follow:

---
?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?
web-app
display-nameHegemonie Acces Base de Donnees/display-name
listener

listener-classcom.sun.xml.ws.transport.http.servlet.WSServletContextLi
stener/listener-class
/listener
servlet
servlet-nameHegeWebService/servlet-name

servlet-classcom.sun.xml.ws.transport.http.servlet.WSServlet/servlet-
class
/servlet
servlet-mapping
 display-nameHegemonie Acces Base de Donnees/display-name
servlet-nameHegeWebService/servlet-name
url-pattern/webinterface/url-pattern
/servlet-mapping
/web-app

---
The problem comes from the reference to the classes in
com.sun.xml.ws.transport.http.servlet.* which import classes from
javax.servlet.*

When trying to start the service I got :

---
03-Jul-2006 10:13:51 org.apache.catalina.core.StandardHostDeployer start
INFO: standardHost.start /HegeWebService
03-Jul-2006 10:13:51 org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext
listenerStart
SEVERE: Skipped installing application listeners due to previous
error(s)
03-Jul-2006 10:13:51 org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext start
SEVERE: Error listenerStart
03-Jul-2006 10:13:51 org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext start
SEVERE: Context startup failed due to previous errors

---

When looking the server log file is due to :

---
2006-07-03 10:13:51 StandardContext[/HegeWebService]Error configuring
applicatio
n listener of class
com.sun.xml.ws.transport.http.servlet.WSServletContextListen
er
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
javax/servlet/ServletContextAttributeListener
at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass1(Native Method)
at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass(ClassLoader.java:620)
at
java.security.SecureClassLoader.defineClass(SecureClassLoader.java:12
4)
at java.net.URLClassLoader.defineClass(URLClassLoader.java:260)
at java.net.URLClassLoader.access$100(URLClassLoader.java:56)
at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:195)
  ..

---

Now the things which is odd is that on the server there are other
services using their own context listener that import the same classes
and they start without any problem!!

For example:

---
2006-07-03 10:13:48 StandardContext[/jsp-examples]ContextListener:
contextInitia
lized()
2006-07-03 10:13:48 StandardContext[/jsp-examples]SessionListener:
contextInitia
lized()
2006-07-03 10:13:49 StandardContext[/servlets-examples]ContextListener:
contextI
nitialized()
2006-07-03 10:13:49 StandardContext[/servlets-examples]SessionListener:
contextI
nitialized()

---

According to all different things I have seen on the internet they
sometimes talks about the classpath, however even if I add explicitely
the servlet-api.jar that is in $CATALINA_HOME/common/lib on the
classpath inside catalina.sh or on the system classpath that does not
change anything. And I doubt the problem comes from there since other
examples using classes relying on this packages works fine, only mine
crashes down not finding these classes.

I am completely stuck by this and cannot find any way out of it...

Any suggestion?

Thanks

Francois Remacle

Hi,

or generate text file using response.getWriter().println() and connect using
telnet this way:
GET http://localhost:8080/context_path/servlet_path HTTP/1.1 HOST localhost:8080

And you will see headers sent by Tomcat

This works for me (specially the `chuncked' encoding)

 Of course
If 4.x support this feature, then 5.x supports one in 4.1.31 see
 DefaultHeaders.java HttpRequestStream.java HttpResponseStream.java.
To check this option put in ROOT any big file and try download id with
 some download manager

Way to force Tomcat not to send headers in its http response.

I don't see in the servlet api a way to clear or reset the headers ?

You can only add a header so I don't know how you can remove header with a
servlet filter ?

Regards.

Francois

I would use a Servlet Filter to do this. It is a standard, not tomcat specific
and it allows you to decouple the header processing from your existing servlet
and it is also very flexible.
you will be handle to handle both HTTP response and request headers.

Hope this helps.
