But since we are Solaris, I'm having trouble verifying the device file is pointing to the right drive/serial number.

Veritas has a technote here: http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/193280.htm

Can anyone offer suggestions on a quicker way to verify the configuration is properly setup via command line?

[Veritas-bu] Backup of Universe database?

2006-01-14 Thread Andrew Armstrong

Hi all...
This is a long shot, but does anyone on the list have an experience backing up Universe databases with NBU? (universe is an ancient pick database derivative that is now owned by IBM). We just migrated it from an HP-UX os over to Suse Linux Enterprise. Performance is much better, but I am not sure that all the db files are backing up properly. We are doing a manually scripted split mirror just prior to backup, and are backing up the part that has been split off. I am not sure that the db files are consistent enough to ensure a good restore in a disaster situation. Any recommendations would be appreciated...

If I'm not mistaken, unless you specify that you DONT want
to use VSP, NBU uses it. You have to add the client in the master server

on the second tab de-select "Windows open file backup"
option

I have

I am

I've done it both ways.called an external

put some debug commands in the script, simple
logging stuff, then make sure the commands i the script work if you run them
at the CLI, then verify that you can run the bpstart_notify.bat from the
CLI.

2006-01-14 Thread Mark . Donaldson
Yeah - what they all said. Backupid's have individual expiration dates, the
media's expiration date should be the latest image expiration date on that
tape.

Also - most likely he wants the backups for a particular client for a
particular date range to be have their expiration dates extended.

To do this, first lookup the backup-ids you need to extend:

bpimagelist -client clientname -d start_date -e end_date -idonly | awk
'{print $8}' | tee /tmp/bpidlist

now /tmp/bpidlist has a list of backupids for this client date range. Now
extend them:

for id in `cat /tmp/bpidlist`
do
  echo Extending $id
  bpexpdate -recalculate -backupid $id -d new_date -force
done

Guys
I wonder if you can help clarify something for me

I have been asked to ensure a backup SESSION does not expire on the 17th Jan
06 - Today is the 13th Jan 06

Now, when I checked this policy, there are 2 tapes in a volume pool - the
guy asking me the question keeps referring to retaining a SESSION !!! Now, I
can see the tape is due to expire in 2 weeks time, but this is not
acceptable!

Is it possible, he is seeing something different to what I am? He truly
beleives that a backup will expire on the 17th!

I checked BPEXPDATE and you can specify a date for media and / or backup id
- I wonder if backup id is related to images?

Can I have an image that will expire BEFORE a tape? I guess it could?? If I
could have clarification, would truly apprecaite it

Simon,The algorithm is as such: every image on a tape
has an expiration date. After the last image on the tape has expired, the
tape becomes availableagain. With BPEXPDATE you can expire all the
images on a tape, therewithexpiring the complete tape.If you use
BPEXPDATE to set the expiration date to infinite, or anythingelse then
expire now, you will do this for all the images on the tape.To my knowledge
you cannot set the expiration for a specific image, which would not make too

The server i'm having high fragmentation
is a Lotus Domino server. I talked to lotus and they do not recommend defragmentation
while domino is running.

I'd probably need a 4 to 8hr outage
window to defrag the drive.

Today i had a small outage window on
the server so i upgraded the Raid Controller Firmware, Server Bios and
Upgraded the broadcom GB drivers.

For the time being the backup server
isn't having slow backup performance since the updates. Yeah!

So i have some breathing room until
i can get a long outage window.

In the past, slow performance has shown
up after two weeks.

At anyrate, i still need to defrag the
drive.

This will not produce accurate information for Windows clients. The

Not only that, but bpcoverage is unsupported, undocumented, and Veritas
