I have a Safari Subscription and I could only find brief mentions of NetBackup in a few books. I had the most hits on the below book. Backup and Restore Practices for Sun Enterprise Servers By: Stan Stringfellow, Miroslav Klivansky, and Michael Barto Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR Publish Date: 2000/08/30 I have a limited plan and no Sun servers so I didn't add it to my bookshelf so I have no idea how rich the content is regarding NBU. Might be worth at least a quick browse by some of you with Sun systems though. Re: [Veritas-bu] Command to get tape barcode while it's in a drive.
Our environment is HP-UX 11.11, Netbackup 5.1 MP3 backing up mostly HP unix with some Sun and Windows backups. I know this has come up before but couldn't find anything in the archives. I'm looking for a command line way to determine the bar code of a tape when it's in a drive. I'm trying to gather info to determine if certain tapes are causing problems. Thanks in advance. Depends on what level you want. If Netbackup sees and mounts the tape, then 'vmoprcmd' output will show the barcode and the media name together. If you want to leave most of netbackup out of it, you can use robtest (or the sub tests like tldtest) to query the library directly. 's d' will ask for a scan of the drives. On most libraries that will include any associated barcodes for tapes in the drives. -- Darren Dunham [EMAIL PROTECTED] Senior Technical Consultant TAOShttp://www.taos.com/ Got some Dr Pepper? Re: [Veritas-bu] Question on SSO
You're not really sharing your standard media server's drives. They don't really belong to the standard media servers...the standard media servers are just another server reserving shared drives. Each media server, *AND* SAN media server will need an SSO license, and you will need an SSO licence per shared drive. 4 drives and 8 servers, = 4 SSO drive licenses and 8 SSO media server licenses. Re: [Veritas-bu] Question on SSO
The two DSSUs are that large because they will be able to hold a week's worth of backups (compressed 2:1 ish) so I can stream them to tape during the week when the SSO Media Servers won't be backing up. That should give me 4 drives the entire weekend to backup my 6 largest clients / servers which should be plenty of time. The idea is to add more SSO Media Servers down the road sometime (budget, ::sigh::) and originally I wanted 10, not 6, so I'm keenly aware of the number of drives being a major limitation. Re: [Veritas-bu] VTL images to tape
Title: Message Hi, Sorry for the late reply (trying to catch up). I have a customer using an HP VTL with NBU 5.1 and NBU Vault without any (major) problems. From what has been discussed here, VTLs work in 2 ways: The VTL sits in front of the actual Library and clones the tapes that are in the physical lib. NBU sees only the VTL. All backups are done on the VTL and it copies the data to the physical tapes. The VTL is in the configuration as a separate library. Backups are done on the VTL and Vaulting (or a script) duplicates the data to the physical tapes. I have not seen any limitation in NBU regarding to VTLs Regards, Jim From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Hindle, Greg Sent: Tuesday, August 22, 2006 7:29 PM To: Paul Keating; veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu Subject: Re: [Veritas-bu] VTL images to tape Paul, The vaulting in 5.0 does not allow images to be copied from a VTL to tape. Re: [Veritas-bu] NBU Licensing Question - Phys. Drives vs. Virtual Drives
We're using something like that, an ADIC PathlightVX. It's in front of a library with only 2 LTO-3 drives (soon to be 4). We have 14 virtual drives configured on the PVX (12 of which are going out to 6 san media servers -- two each --, so they back themselves up across FC). It's licensed by the TB, through a VTL license, instead of by virtual tape drive. I think we're only paying for the VTL licenses (8TB) -- for that portion of our backup config, the two physical drives on the back end aren't covered, since they don't ever touch a media/master, only our PVX. bpexpdate deletes the copy of the images that are on the specified tape (among other things) from the catalog. There is no need to perform other steps if you are merely discarding the image copies from a tape. As others have written, the expired tape becomes available or expired and frozen. If you no longer want NetBackup to see the tape, you delete it (vmdelete or the Admin Console), probably after ejecting it from your robot. I then do into the GUI and delete the images is only necessary when you wish to discard other copies of the images that are/were on the tape. In case it's not clear, none of the operations were discussing cause a tape to be mounted. Hope this helps, wayne Keith W wrote, in part, on 8/24/2006 12:17 PM: Here is what I do, always seems to work for me. Expire the image, where A3 is the volume name. ./bpexpdate -ev A3 -d 0 I then go into the GUI and delete the images, I do this because I am not sure how to do that part command line. ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu
Re: [Veritas-bu] NBU Licensing Question - Phys. Drives vs. Virtual Drives
That makes sense. So you just license the TB of storage the device has (the one providing the VTL; in your case the PathlightVX)? The proposal we got for this was a Sun/StorageTEK solution that involved a VTA-1000 from Peak Data with 5TB of cache and an IBM SL500 with 4 LTO-3's on the backend. I'm not terribly impressed by their proposal overall but if we want to purchase a different solution we have to be able to shoot them down in front of the City Commission (I hate working for local government) because they are the cheapest by like $150K. One of senior managers is looking heavily to me for the license answers (aside of the usual technical recommendation) but I don't have direct access to our approved vendors. Do you by chance know what they call that license? I tried looking on Symantec's web site and they do not actually list any NBU licensing requirements with any useful detail. Just the Agents and Options. Thanks. Huge help (unlike Symantec's web site). Drives vs. Virtual Drives We're using something like that, an ADIC PathlightVX. Hope that made sense.. ~ Robin Koster, Phil [EMAIL PROTECTED] 08/24/06 8:41 AM We got bids in for new back up solutions and one of them proposes 16 virtual tape drives but only 4 physical LTO- 3 drives. Does anyone know off the top of their head how that would work? (Would we need 16 tape drive licenses to go along with all the clients etc?). There would not be any addition of media servers or clients. The proposal is basically a proprietary SAN set up that has up to 32 VTD emulation channels to interface with NBU, NBU would not be able to use it as a DSSU, and NBU will not have direct access to the LTO- 3s, only the VTDs. [Veritas-bu] sizing a NBU install.
Can anyone give me some real life pointers on how to size an NBU install where I have 300 unix clients? I will be using NBU 6.0, with DSSU, attached to a STK L700 library. I will be using a master server and a media server. I will need to backup about 200GB of data per client. I tried looking at the release notes, but I did not see any specifics.. can anyone share some wisdom based on their deployments?? much appreciated Will ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu
