How about slightly less robust software (or at least free)?

I couldn't find any good projects on sourceforge after a brief search (very
brief).

What is the recommended way, "best practice" to
permanently remove tapes from netbackup? We have some tapes they will be
removed from one master and shipped to another location to a different master.
But I want to make sure that no traces of the tapes remain in the old master.
What is the best way to do this without causing any issues?

We use Netbackup 5.0 MP6. The only way to
install the client is to have the client added in a Netbackup Policy prior to
the client installation. Is there any way to override this requirement
and install the client without it first being added to Netbackup? Thanks!

I have a Safari Subscription and I could only find brief mentions of NetBackup
in a few books. I had the most hits on the below book.

Backup and Restore Practices for Sun Enterprise Servers
By: Stan Stringfellow, Miroslav Klivansky, and Michael Barto
Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR
Publish Date: 2000/08/30

I have a limited plan and no Sun servers so I didn't add it to my bookshelf so
I have no idea how rich the content is regarding NBU. Might be worth at least
a quick browse by some of you with Sun systems though.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Question on SSO

2006-08-24 Thread Clooney, David
2 media servers and 6 SAN media servers , they can be configured to all
share the drives however judging by the size of you DSSU's I would
dedicate drives for the pure job of duplication.

Previously I have worked with 1 TB DSSU's and the media server had
dedicated drives and still contstantly chugged away

That will give the header info... as it was written by NetBackup, but if for some reason the 2 don't match, you're in trouble (in more ways that one!)

Also, I use vmoprcmd without any switches so I can see to which server the tape/drive are assigned.

Indeed

By running

bpexpdate -m $tape -d 0 (and removing from the
mediaDB)

expires all images on media and the media becomes
unassigned however this just means that the tape is now
AVAILABLE.

To remove from volDB you need to vmdelete -m $tape

If the two above commands are run the other way round you
can cause issues .

What is the recommended way, "best practice" to
permanently remove tapes from netbackup? We have some tapes they will be
removed from one master and shipped to another location to a different
master. But I want to make sure that no traces of the tapes remain in the
old master. What is the best way to do this without causing any
issues?

I use the vmoprcmd d command

determine if a tape is in the downd drive and what its bar code
is?

That will give the header info... as it
was written by NetBackup, but if for some reason the 2 don't match, you're in
trouble (in more ways that one!)

Also, I use vmoprcmd without any switches so I can see to
which server the tape/drive are assigned.

Depends on what level you want.

If Netbackup sees and mounts the tape, then 'vmoprcmd' output will show
the barcode and the media name together.

If you want to leave most of netbackup out of it, you can use robtest
(or the sub tests like tldtest) to query the library directly. 's d'
will ask for a scan of the drives. On most libraries that will include
any associated barcodes for tapes in the drives.

My assumption is, as long as you have valid SSO licenses applied to all

same drives

If we have two media servers with 6.5TB DSSUs and 6 SSO Clients can they

when they need to dump to tape and can those 4 drive be available to the

Title: Re: [Veritas-bu] Question on SSO

SSO licenses and shared tape drive licenses are different. You'll need Media (or SAN Media) server licenses for the servers and 4 shared tape drive licenses for the tape drives.

Then again, I too could be wrong, It's been a while since I've had to be involved in licensing. But, this is accurate for what I recall having to deal with in the past.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Question on SSO

2006-08-24 Thread Paul Keating
You're not really sharing your standard media server's drives.

They don't really belong to the standard media servers...the standard
media servers are just another server reserving shared drives.

Each media server, *AND* SAN media server will need an SSO license, and
you will need an SSO licence per shared drive.

4 drives and 8 servers, = 4 SSO drive licenses and 8 SSO media server
licenses.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Question on SSO

2006-08-24 Thread Martin, Jonathan \(Contractor\)

The two DSSUs are that large because they will be able to hold a week's
worth of backups (compressed 2:1 ish) so I can stream them to tape
during the week when the SSO Media Servers won't be backing up. That
should give me 4 drives the entire weekend to backup my 6 largest
clients / servers which should be plenty of time. The idea is to add
more SSO Media Servers down the road sometime (budget, ::sigh::) and
originally I wanted 10, not 6, so I'm keenly aware of the number of
drives being a major limitation. Thanks for the input!

Its looking like we're going to buy a Library with 4 (expandable to 10)
drives and I'm wondering this.

If we have two media servers with 6.5TB DSSUs and 6 SSO Clients can they
all share 4 drives? I know there is going to be scheduling involved,
but can the standard media servers allocate their own SSO shared drives
when they need to dump to tape and can those 4 drive be available to the
6 SSO Media Servers while the standard media servers DSSUs aren't
dumping images to tape?

Management has decided on a config and I'm just double checking to make
sure its going to work. I'll post it here when we're 100% decided
because I'd feel better if some people who use SSO now bless my

Thanks all!

Why dont you check out

/usr/openv/netbackup/db/media/errors

from there you should be able to see
whether the same media is causing you issues,

you could also grab info from the messages

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply (trying to catch
up).

I have a customer using an HP VTL with NBU
5.1 and NBU Vault without any (major) problems.

From what has been discussed here, VTLs
work in 2 ways:

 The
VTL sits in front of the actual Library and clones the tapes
that are in the physical lib. NBU sees only the VTL. All backups are done
on the VTL and it copies the data to the physical tapes.
 The
VTL is in the configuration as a separate library. Backups are done on the
VTL and Vaulting (or a script) duplicates the data to the physical tapes.

I have not seen any limitation in NBU
regarding to VTLs

Paul,

The vaulting in 5.0 does not allow images
to be copied from a VTL to tape. The option is in the software but it does not
work. We have confirmed this with Symantec that the vault was written for tape
to tape copies not for VTL to tape. Even though netbackup sees that virtual
tapes fine vault someone knows these are not real tapes and copy
process does not function.

The way I understood, each Media Server that wanted to share a
storage, had to have its own SSO license.

Of course, this excludes the fact you ALSO need Media License

[Veritas-bu] NBU Licensing Question - Phys. Drives vs. Virtual Drives

2006-08-24 Thread Koster, Phil

We got bids in for new back up solutions and one of them
proposes 16 virtual tape drives but only 4 physical LTO-3 drives. Does
anyone know off the top of their head how that would work? (Would we need
16 tape drive licenses to go along with all the clients etc?).

There would not be any addition of media servers or clients.
The proposal is basically a proprietary SAN set up that has up to 32 VTD
emulation channels to interface with NBU, NBU would not be able to use it as a
DSSU, and NBU will not have direct access to the LTO-3s, only the VTDs.

Out of the Licensing Guide

NetBackup Shared Storage Option is licensed per shared tape drive,
regardless of the manufacturer, type of device, or number of NetBackup
Servers attached to the SAN. The NetBackup Shared Storage Option license is
in addition to any required NetBackup Library Based Tape Drive licenses.

If you have 4 tape drives you need at the most 4 SSO license.
# tape drives does not need to match # of SSO's

Re: [Veritas-bu] NBU Licensing Question - Phys. Drives vs. Virtual Drives

2006-08-24 Thread Robin Small
We're using something like that, an ADIC PathlightVX. It's in front of a
library with only 2 LTO-3 drives (soon to be 4).

We have 14 virtual drives configured on the PVX (12 of which are going out to 6
san media servers -- two each --, so they back themselves up across FC).

It's licensed by the TB, through a VTL license, instead of by virtual tape
drive.

I think we're only paying for the VTL licenses (8TB) -- for that portion of our
backup config, the two physical drives on the back end aren't covered, since
they don't ever touch a media/master, only our PVX.

Hope that made sense..

You
will need 4 tape drive licenses, for the physical drives, and a license for the

bpexpdate deletes the copy of the images that are on the specified tape
(among other things) from the catalog. There is no need to perform
other steps if you are merely discarding the image copies from a tape.
As others have written, the expired tape becomes available or expired
and frozen. If you no longer want NetBackup to see the tape, you
delete it (vmdelete or the Admin Console), probably after ejecting it
from your robot.

I then do into the GUI and delete the images is only necessary when
you wish to discard other copies of the images that are/were on the tape.

In case it's not clear, none of the operations were discussing cause a
tape to be mounted.

Hope this helps, wayne

Re: [Veritas-bu] NBU Licensing Question - Phys. Drives vs. Virtual Drives

2006-08-24 Thread Koster, Phil
That makes sense.

So you just license the TB of storage the device has (the one providing the
VTL; in your case the PathlightVX)?

The proposal we got for this was a Sun/StorageTEK solution that involved a
VTA-1000 from Peak Data with 5TB of cache and an IBM SL500 with 4 LTO-3's on
the backend. I'm not terribly impressed by their proposal overall but if we
want to purchase a different solution we have to be able to shoot them down in
front of the City Commission (I hate working for local government) because they
are the cheapest by like $150K. One of senior managers is looking heavily to
me for the license answers (aside of the usual technical recommendation) but I
don't have direct access to our approved vendors.

Do you by chance know what they call that license? I tried looking on
Symantec's web site and they do not actually list any NBU licensing
requirements with any useful detail. Just the Agents and Options.

Thanks. Huge help (unlike Symantec's web site).

Subject: Re: [Veritas-bu] NBU Licensing Question - Phys. Drives vs. Virtual
Drives

We got bids in for new back up solutions and one of them proposes 16
virtual tape drives but only 4 physical LTO- 3 drives. Does anyone know
off the top of their head how that would work? (Would we need 16 tape
drive licenses to go along with all the clients etc?).

There would not be any addition of media servers or clients. The
proposal is basically a proprietary SAN set up that has up to 32 VTD
emulation channels to interface with NBU, NBU would not be able to use
it as a DSSU, and NBU will not have direct access to the LTO- 3’s, only
the VTDs.

Thanks.

[Veritas-bu] sizing a NBU install.

2006-08-24 Thread will_hungies
Can anyone give me some real life pointers on how to size an NBU install where
I have 300 unix clients?

I will be using NBU 6.0, with DSSU, attached to a STK L700 library.

I will be using a master server and a media server.

I will need to backup about 200GB of data per client.

I tried looking at the release notes, but I did not see any specifics..

can anyone share some wisdom based on their deployments??

much appreciated
Will

Hello all,

I am caughtup in some SARBOX requirements and I am looking to see if there
is a CLI utility that will look at a image ID and tell me what media I'd

Basically the SARBOX tester is looking to see if we backup a client and
offsite the media, we use vault as well.

Thanks in advance,

[Veritas-bu] What Is the Command for Re-reading the bp.conf File Without Restarting the NetBackup Service

2006-08-24 Thread JAJA \(Jamie Jamison\)

There is a command
you can run that will re-read bp.conf and as long as certain changes have not
been made, will dynamically update your running NetBackup configuration to match
the new file. Can anyone tell me what this is?

Thanks,
