Good day,

Are both the switch and the server set to full duplex?

Make sure that reverse lookup on the domain is working correctly.

[Veritas-bu] Questions about NetBackup Shared Storage Option (SSO)

2007-02-20 Thread Rongsheng Fang
Hi,

Currently we are running NB 5.0 and doing LAN-based backups. We have one
tape library (StorageTek L180) that is directly connected to the master
server. We'll be upgrading our backup infrastructure to Netbackup 6.0
and move from LAN-based backup to SAN-based backup using NetBackup's SSO
option.

Even though I did do my homework and read through Shared Storage Option
(SSO) Topics of Veritas NetBackup 6.0 Media Manager SA's Guide page
by page, I still have a few questions:

1) How does Veritas license SSO? Is it based on tape drives?

2) Does each master/media server that will be sharing the tape drives
need an individual SSO license, or only one single SSO license is needed
and can be installed on all the servers?

3) We'll be connecting the tape library (StorageTek L180) to the SAN
switch during the upgrade. Do we just connect the robot to the FC
switch, or we need to connect the robot and all of the tape drives that
are in it to the FC switch?

4) We'll be running EMM on the master servers which will act as the host
allocating and deallocating tap drives. In this case, do the master
servers need to be connected to the SAN?

Thanks,

Rongsheng

it seems you are using compression for the backup,
1) value for CLIENT_READ_TIMEOUT ?
2) please do increase the client read timeout value on

Re: [Veritas-bu] RES: Questions about NetBackup Shared Storage Option(SSO)

2007-02-20 Thread Steve Dvorak
To clarify SSO licensing.. You need one SSO license for each tape drive you
plan to dynamically share. I.e. if you have 10 tape drives connected to the
SAN and plan to share 6 of them between 20 servers, you would need 6 SSO
licenses.

 1 - Yes
2 - On each media you need a SSO license and SAN Media license.
3 - You can connect only the tapes, and the arm control stay with the master,
but particularly I preffer connect the robot and tapes, is more easy to
configure using the wizard if you has many tapes.
4 - If you want to make backups using the SAN or to maintain the arm control
with the master, yes.

Assunto: [Veritas-bu] Questions about NetBackup Shared Storage Option (SSO)

Hi,

Currently we are running NB 5.0 and doing LAN-based backups. We have one tape
library (StorageTek L180) that is directly connected to the master server.
We'll be upgrading our backup infrastructure to Netbackup 6.0 and move from
LAN-based backup to SAN-based backup using NetBackup's SSO option.

Even though I did do my homework and read through Shared Storage Option
(SSO) Topics of Veritas NetBackup 6.0 Media Manager SA's Guide page by page,
I still have a few questions:

1) How does Veritas license SSO? Is it based on tape drives?

2) Does each master/media server that will be sharing the tape drives need an
individual SSO license, or only one single SSO license is needed and can be
installed on all the servers?

3) We'll be connecting the tape library (StorageTek L180) to the SAN switch
during the upgrade. Do we just connect the robot to the FC switch, or we need
to connect the robot and all of the tape drives that are in it to the FC switch?

4) We'll be running EMM on the master servers which will act as the host
allocating and deallocating tap drives. In this case, do the master servers
need to be connected to the SAN?

Thanks,

Rongsheng

Re: [Veritas-bu] encryption and offhost

2007-02-20 Thread Steve Dvorak
One or the other. The client in this case would be whichever system
ultimately does the backup. Media Server Encryption Option provides key
management and compression, which are extremely nice features. But with
one client, it is not a huge benefit. If your plan is to add other
clients to be encrypted at some point, MSEO is the right way to go,
otherwise, Client encryption is probably more cost effective.

A quick query. We've been asked to look at encryption for one of our
systems. The client that needs encryption is currently being backed up
with vss/clariion snapshot integration to off-host backup on the media
server. In this case what would be the process for encryption and
restoring from those backups ,? Should encryption be set on the
client, media server or both?

Amen Brotha! Good catch!

Media Sharing

The media sharing feature allows multiple NetBackup media servers to
actively

share a given tape media for write purposes. Media sharing reduces tape

media-related expenses by enabling increased media utilization which in
turn

reduces amounts of partially full media and total number of tape media
required

to store a given amount of backup data. Media sharing reduces the
vaulting

related expenses because fewer pieces of media will need to be vaulted
and fewer

pieces of empty media will need to be placed into the scratch pool.
Media sharing

also provides the ability to hand off a mounted tape to another media
server,

eliminating mount time for backup to different media servers.

[Veritas-bu] Sort of OT: Aptare/HBSM/3rd Party NBU Reporting Users MUST READ

2007-02-20 Thread Major, Rusty
Just a heads up for those using 3rd party reporting/trending tools who
are on or plan to upgrade to 5.1MP6:

There is a bug in a library file in 5.1 MP6 that will cause Aptare
StorageConsole/HBSM (Hitachi's rebranded name of the product), possibly
other reporting tools and maybe even the included NBU tools (bpdbjobs,
etc.) to not collect, at a minimum, total MB, MB/s, and tapes written
for all/most jobs. To my knowledge this has only affected a couple of
other Aptare customers, but it has certainly caused me lots of pain and
I still have several weeks of missing info.

Quoting the engineer when I asked him about any data loss, The data is
stored correctly in the appropriate NetBackup databases. Any reporting
tools that rely on libVcom such as bpdbjobs, will truncate date and time
output information until the fix is applied.

My case number with Veritas/Symantec for this issue was 280-994-548. If
you plan on upgrading to 5.1 MP6 and use any 3rd party reporting tool,
especially Aptare/HBSM, make sure you get the updated library file from
Veritas. Since applying the Veritas fix, all data has been gathered
correctly.

[Veritas-bu] Mysteriously down tape drives

2007-02-20 Thread Matt Ungaro

System is Veritas Netbackup 5.1 MP6
1 Master/Media server running on Windows 2003 standard edition, SP1
Library is a Qualstar TLS-8466 with 4 drives. 2 LTOII that are attached to
our Fibre Channel SAN via a SCSI to fibre bridge, 2 LTOIII that are directly
fibre attached to our SAN. All are going through a McData Spherion 4500.

Seemingly random issue that is occuring is that on occasion our LTOIII
drives will be reported in Netbackup as down. What I am looking for is, what
are the correct Netbackup processes to activate logging on to get some
troubleshooting information? The drive doesn't report as having any problems
from the library's perspective, and there are no error messages on the
fabric switches. The Netbackup server is zoned to each fibre port in the
library individually, so there are 3 zones:
Netbackup server to SCSI to fibre bridge (Controls robotic arm, and 2 LTOII
drives)
Netbackup server to LTOIII drive 1
Netbackup server to LTOIII drive 2.

We never have any issues with the LTOII drives or the robotic arm, but the
LTOIII drives go down for seemingly no reason whatsoever. Any assistance
with troubleshooting this issue is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

For a single client that has extra CPU power, client-side encryption is
not too bad. For a handful of clients, MSEO might be the right way to
go. If you're going to do everything, purchase an encryption appliance
like a Decru/NetApp Cryptostor.

We decided to go the Decru approach - we don't have to worry about which
clients are encrypted and which aren't, or if data was copied from a
server that has encrypted backups to a server that doesn't. We know
that if the tape goes offsite, it's encrypted.

In case it's not obvious, it may be important to recall that DOWN is a
NetBackup status, not an operating system or hardware state. The robot
and drive may be in perfect health, but still NetBackup may set the

I'd first look in the (v5.1) error file. On Unix servers this is
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/media/errors ... probably similar in Win2003.

Then I'd look at the bptm logs. See the troubleshooting guide for

Ok so the problems seem to be linked with the LTO3 drives - have you enabled
BPTM logging at max on the server?
Also, may sound daft, are you running the latest firmware for these drives?
Also latest drivers?

Netbackup relies on communication between the OS and the hardware - if it
detects something is wrong, it can mark the device as down, even if it looks
ok.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Questions about NetBackup Shared Storage Option (SSO)

2007-02-20 Thread WEAVER, Simon (external)

Hello Rongsheng

Hopefully the following pointers will assist:

Q1: The Shared Storage option is based on the number of tape drives you wish
to share in your Netbackup environment

Q2: Each NetBackup Media Server will require a Media License / SSO License.
You may also know this as a SAN MEDIA Server, which is what I refer to them
as. They are licensed to communicate with the Master Server, and also the
SSO License allows them to share the Tape Drive or Drives.

Q3: Well, what I have done is connected the drives and robot to the Fabric.
I run Win2k3, and essentially what Windows does is detects a Medium Changer
and the relevant Tape drives that are present on the fabric. Doing this also
allows you to run the Device Configuration Wizard quite easily in windows.
Of course you can do this task manually by adding a robot and tape drives.

Q4: I do not know much about the EMM, but essentially, the Master needs to
be connected to the SAN, and I would say very likely in your case.

Of course my answers could be wrong :-) but this is my understanding and how
my setup works.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Questions about NetBackup Shared Storage Option (SSO)

Thanks,

Rongsheng

Re: [Veritas-bu] Sneak Peek

2007-02-20 Thread WEAVER, Simon (external)

Hm not good. do not see any option to upgrade from 5.1 to 6.5.

So looks like either an in-trim 5.1 - 6.0 - 6.5 or migrate from 5.1 - 6.0
!

Trouble is I still run NT clients too. When is 6.5 meant to be released Bob
?
