[Veritas-bu] Netbackup 5.1 to use a specific tape drive for restoration.

2010-03-03 Thread Calvin Chen W. K.
The current setup of the Netbackup is 1 unit of Server running Solaris 8
configured as Netbackup Master/Media Server. 1 unit of L180 tape
library with 4 SDLT320 tape drives and 1 unit of SDLT320 standalone tape
drive is connected to the server. May I know how to restore using the
SDLT320 standalone tape drive instead of using the L180 tape library?

Note: Backup of the client was to the L180 tape library SDLT320 tape
drive and the tape needed for the restoration have been identified and
ejected from the L180 tape library.

Hi Calvin you can't specify what tape you want to reserve for restore,
you can create a Storage Unit with there tapes drives, so always will be a
tape available to make restores.

2010-03-03 Thread Justin Piszcz
Hi,

I currently have a similar setup, LTO-3 and one LTO-4 drive in a test
SL500 robot. I remember doing a something similar with an L700 back in
the day with LTO-2 drives and STK 9840s, it had a lot of issues in that
environment (L700), although I did not set that one up originally.

For the SL500, I have not noticed any issues to date (I have a single
global scratch pool and it picks the correct tape for each drive) even
when I have multiple storage units (LTO-3,LTO-4) in the same group.

Would I recommend this without thorough and extensive testing? Probably
not.

Re: [Veritas-bu] mixing LTO2 and LTO4

2010-03-03 Thread Boris Kraizman
Hello,

I would not recommend to mix LTO2 and LTO4, better go completely with LTO4
or LTO3, you can configure LTO3 tape drives to read and write LTO2 tape
media. When I was planing to mix LTO2 and LTO3 tape drives on SL500, I was
told by STK engineers, I would need to have a converter in the tape drive
canisters for LTO2 tape drives, and it would cost a lot more extra to
compare LTO3 and LTO4 tape drives. Better to have a smaller unit like SL24
with LTO3/SAS tape drives and configure them in hcart2 on NetBackup, I don't
think you can buy LTO2 tape drives anymore.

[Veritas-bu] NetBackup on CentOS ??

2010-03-03 Thread Robin Small
I'm wondering if any of you know why CentOS isn't supported as a NBU Master?

I've tried googledredging, but all I've really managed to find is that it's
technically possible, but not supported.

I've done it in a VM for a test env., and while it installs fine, I haven't
really ran it through its paces to find out if anything breaks.

So, I'm curious if anyone knows the reason?? The only one I can think of,
beside it being some technical issue, is that Support wants someone (a company
and/or paid support) to refer to when it becomes an OS-related issue and that
the Master/Media/Server-side demands more of the OS than a client.

We have upgraded our productions servers to 7.0 here.

The upgrade was smooth and easy. We did our master server and media server in
an afternoon. no harder than doing a 6.5.x patch really.

A few things we have noticed:

VMWare backups are hugely improved.

We have yet to successfully restore a Virtual Machine backup however. It
restores the files to the VMware datastore, they all appear to be there, then
it claims tar did not find all the files and deletes everything it just
restored. There are a lot of moving parts with this and we are still working on
resolving this one.

Using the new use VM Name selection method in our policies has resulted in
vault duplications of images with spaces failing.

Otherwise all our normal UNIX and Windows backups seem to be running just fine.
I can’t comment on SQL database agents, as we do not use any database agents
here.

The compatibility matrix isn't really about what works - it's about what
Symantec will support. Many people have done all sorts of things that work,
although may not be supported.

In order for Symantec to support CentOS as a master, they would have to
build it and continue to update and support it. Every new update would
require re-certification on yet another platform. Would you want your
master server to be on a platform that Symantec hasn't thoroughly tested?
Of course not.

I suspect that there's not a lot of demand for a CentOS-based master
either. NetBackup is an enterprise product and most enterprises probably
want support on their production operating systems.

CentOS is not RHEL. It never has been and never can be. It's close, but
from an enterprise support perspective, close isn't good enough.

Just wanted to share my stats, on compression and encryption.
I am using NetBackups kms (not mseo) application managed tape
encryption.
I have one full tape that is encrypted. All the other full's are NOT
encrypted.
I seem to be getting about the same in the amount of data on the tapes.
Less than D0 but more the D00022 - it all depends on the data.
So to me it appears that as the tape drive is doing both the compression
and the encryption it is working well.
I am using LTO4's in an IBM TS3310 library. With NetBackup 6.5.5 that
allows 2 encrypted volume pools.
I also have not noticed any change in my backup times ( but this is my
smaller site) and no overhead on the media server.

Again, that is why I went with KMS, (kms is NOT MESO) it is application
managed encryption that tells the tape drive to do the encryption NOT
the media server, kms just has the keys on the master server and NB
talks to the tape drive with the keys. Again so the tape drive does the
encryption with no over head on the media server. I have not seen an
any impact on my master or media server when I started using KMS.

From the research I have done on the CPU requirements:

It takes roughly 73 clock cycles on a Windows or Linux server or about
87 clock cycles on UNIX server to perform MSEO compression/encryption
per BYTE of data backed up. Backing up 100 MB/sec of data through a
Solaris media server requires 8.7 GHz of CPU processing for MSEO alone,
plus whatever processing is needed for other tasks. To move 200 MB/sec
through the media server would require 17.4 GHz of CPU for MSEO.

So it's a very cpu intensive process. You would probably require a large
multicore process system depending on your throughput requirements

Hi,

I have read others' reviews on MSEO-- from what I understand it will peg

the CPU and reduce throughput dramatically to high-speed drives.

Has anyone not seen that?

The only caveat is that is software based and has fairly heavy host

I am now using kms, and because the tape drive does the compression
and
the tape drive does the encryption, I have not noticed any loss in
compression yet ( only have had it running for about 1 week) that was
something I was also concerned about. You have to compress before you
encrypt, and as far as I could find out the tape drive knows that.

Re: [Veritas-bu] NBU Rel 7.0

2010-03-03 Thread WEAVER, Simon (external)
We have recently been given the chance to goto 7, but only recently got
1 environment to 6.5.4 six months ago, and still have another
environment in the process of still being moved from 5.1 - 6.5

VMWare components would be the only real interest for me.

I haven't heard any horror stories from anybody yet, either in
discussions for which I'm under NDA nor on the list. So far, it seems
to be no worse than any recent 6.5.x release and for some things (like
VMware backups) it's significantly better.

There are certainly people upgrading their production systems to 7.0.
We're trying to find the time to do it ourselves but we're still
short-staffed (any storage/backup admins in Minnesota want a new job?).
We're at 6.5.4 today as well.

Hi All,
Does anyone here has experience to migrate Netbackup 6.0 MP7 from HPUX to
Solaris? is it just copy the netbackup catalog only?
Please advise

Thanks.
