Hi Calvin you can't specify what tape you want to reserve for restore, you can create a Storage Unit with there tapes drives, so always will be a tape available to make restores. Re: [Veritas-bu] mixing LTO2 and LTO4
Hi, I currently have a similar setup, LTO-3 and one LTO-4 drive in a test SL500 robot. I remember doing a something similar with an L700 back in the day with LTO-2 drives and STK 9840s, it had a lot of issues in that environment (L700), although I did not set that one up originally. For the SL500, I have not noticed any issues to date (I have a single global scratch pool and it picks the correct tape for each drive) even when I have multiple storage units (LTO-3,LTO-4) in the same group. Would I recommend this without thorough and extensive testing? Probably not. Justin. Re: [Veritas-bu] mixing LTO2 and LTO4
Hello, I would not recommend to mix LTO2 and LTO4, better go completely with LTO4 or LTO3, you can configure LTO3 tape drives to read and write LTO2 tape media. When I was planing to mix LTO2 and LTO3 tape drives on SL500, I was told by STK engineers, I would need to have a converter in the tape drive canisters for LTO2 tape drives, and it would cost a lot more extra to compare LTO3 and LTO4 tape drives. Better to have a smaller unit like SL24 with LTO3/SAS tape drives and configure them in hcart2 on NetBackup, I don't think you can buy LTO2 tape drives anymore. [Veritas-bu] NetBackup on CentOS ??
I'm wondering if any of you know why CentOS isn't supported as a NBU Master? I've tried googledredging, but all I've really managed to find is that it's technically possible, but not supported. I've done it in a VM for a test env., and while it installs fine, I haven't really ran it through its paces to find out if anything breaks. So, I'm curious if anyone knows the reason?? The only one I can think of, beside it being some technical issue, is that Support wants someone (a company and/or paid support) to refer to when it becomes an OS-related issue and that the Master/Media/Server-side demands more of the OS than a client. ~ Robin ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu

We did our master server and media server in an afternoon. no harder than doing a 6.5.x patch really. A few things we have noticed: VMWare backups are hugely improved. We have yet to successfully restore a Virtual Machine backup however. It restores the files to the VMware datastore, they all appear to be there, then it claims tar did not find all the files and deletes everything it just restored. There are a lot of moving parts with this and we are still working on resolving this one. Using the new use VM Name selection method in our policies has resulted in vault duplications of images with spaces failing. Otherwise all our normal UNIX and Windows backups seem to be running just fine. Re: [Veritas-bu] Sun/StorageTek based LTO4 encryption
Just wanted to share my stats, on compression and encryption. I am using NetBackups kms (not mseo) application managed tape encryption. I have one full tape that is encrypted. All the other full's are NOT encrypted. I seem to be getting about the same in the amount of data on the tapes. Less than D0 but more the D00022 - it all depends on the data. So to me it appears that as the tape drive is doing both the compression and the encryption it is working well. I am using LTO4's in an IBM TS3310 library. With NetBackup 6.5.5 that allows 2 encrypted volume pools. I also have not noticed any change in my backup times ( but this is my smaller site) and no overhead on the media server.
