[Veritas-bu] Synthetic Backup

2006-10-16 Thread Barber, Layne \(Contractor\)

NBU 5.1 - MP5
HP-UX

I want to use
synthetic backups for a large client. The question is, Can I have the Normal
full go to tape and then have the diff inc go to a dsu and have the synth full
go to tape? If so, how would I set up a policy for this?

Thank You,

Layne Barber

Layne
Yes, for a win2k client, I can in fact SEE the files in question!
(under System State).

Now, Win2k3 - just checked a client and on the left of BAR I
see

Shadow copy Components
system service
event logs
windows management
instrumentation

system state
com+ class registration database
registry
system files

Now, I can ONLY assume the files are in the system files, yet I
cannot expand it!

I
see on the right a small icon and the word registry, but itsa shame I
cannot expand on this.

Layne, are you able to confirm if you see the files on a win2k3
server?

Also, is there any documentation you have to hand about
this?

Failing that, I will search the
web
Finally PAUL where were you looking and was it a
Win2k3 client ?

If you created a new stu on these, did you restart netbackup? Usually
that will happen on a new storage unit if you don't stop and restart
NBU. You can also try the following commands if you can't stop NBU right
now. Sometimes it will work and sometimes you just have to restart NBU.

bpschedreq -read_stunits

I've recently added a few new SAN media servers to my environment NBU
5.1MP5) and we are trying to run some test backups from these servers.
The job gets submitted and shows up queued in the activity monitor and
stays that way. I left one like that overnight, and it was still queued
this morning. The media servers are HPUX with a Solaris master.

I've checked bpsched, bprd, and bpcd logs on the master server as well
as the bprd and bpcd logs on the media server. Nothing is screaming out
as to why jobs from these new media servers will not go active. Other
jobs to other media servers are going active almost immediately.

What other things should I look into? I've checked name resolution,
traceroutes in both directions, and have a support call open with
Symantec. These new servers are supposed to go live this weekend.

Argh!

I'm upgrading from 4.5 FP9 to 5.1 and then to 6.x (current version).
Have brick level backups improved with these version upgrades? I
remember when I've tried to do our 80 GB brick level backups a year ago
I think the best speed I ever got was about 24 hours.

We just upgraded the Exchange server to the GB switch so Information
Store backups which took about 2.2 hours before now only take about 40
minutes.

I presume my brick level backups should now only take about 8 hours on
the Gigabit switch, which just might fit in my backup window but it
would be cutting it close.

Am I correct to assume this or has version 5 or 6 improved the brick
level backup performance or does Symantec have a product designed for
brick level backups?

Thanks,
Mike Day

Hi all,

I am having problems with some of my media id's not appearing in the NB

assigning it with vmquery -assignbyid. Alas it seems I am back where I
started and I can see the tape using vmquery, but I cannot see the tape

also know the backups will fail on those tapes that I cannot see with

I only have one standalone Veritas Netbackup server with the tape drives

the host name doesn't help either.

So I would love to know how I can get this media id added to the NB

I had the same thing happen and got a solution from Veritas (excuse me,
symantec). It is drastic but it does work. You need to know the tape ID
and the pool number.

install_path\volmgr\bin\vmquery.exe -deassignbyid media-id pool-num
0 (that's a zero, use on a tape that is NOT a catalog)

install_path\volmgr\bin\vmquery.exe -deassignbyid media-id pool-num
1 (use for a catalog tape, must use bplabel after.

To find a pool number
install_path\veritas\volmgr\bin\vmquery.exe -m XX where X is
media ID

You will get a nastygram about the database possibly being out of sync,
ir has never happened to me but if you run a physical inventory followed
by an NBU inventory you will definitely be in sync.

  We have an issue
of drives randomly going down every night. NBU 5.0 mp5 HP-UX 11.11 STK L180 w/
  STK 3400 scsi bridge.

  For some reason, 1
or more drives go down at random every night when backups run. Different tapes
and different drives. Backups will be running fine and then drives begin to go
down. These are SDLT320 drives. once they go down, you can't use robtest to
move the tapes (medium not present error) or use the robtest unload command
  (device not present).

  If we power cycle
the scsi bridge, we can talk to the drives and do what ever we want. STK is
claiming that there is something coming from the host that is "polling" the
library from the physical layer (assume HBA). We have had the SA for the
master/media server disable any polling and load the latest patches from HP to
no avail. We have changed from auto index to a manual map index as
  well.

  This was working
from the end of June up until the second week in October.

Title: Message

Everything has been power cycled several times. The drives
appear to go down at the end of a job.

I
assume its been physically powered down / restarted the drives /
robot?
Also,
do the tapes go into a DOWN STATE during the middle of a backup, or beginning or
would you say very random?

They have upgraded the FW to the latest/greatest and
checked cables. I agree on the polling.

Hm what about Firmware for the SDLT tape
drives?
  Any
loose cables / connections or possible to change Scsi
  connectors?

  Not
too sure why they feel the software is polling a drive could cause a
problem?- if anything I would say polling a device is probably good as
Netbackup confirms it can see it!

  The
thing that makes me wonder if its cable / firmware issue is the comment
  "MEDIUM NOT PRESENT".
  Thanks
