Re: [Veritas-bu] Netbackup 7.1 Migration
I also followed this path - same name/same IP. The old server was left on the network while the hot catalog ran. When that finished, I removed the old master from the network, plugged in the new master, restored the catalog and away we went. In reality, it was fairly painless. I heard a lot of bad things about changing the name/IP so I didn't want to go there. -Original Message- From: veritas-bu-boun...@mailman.eng.auburn.edu [mailto:veritas-bu-boun...@mailman.eng.auburn.edu] On Behalf Of mja...@guesswho.com Sent: Saturday, July 07, 2012 4:57 AM To: VERITAS-BU@MAILMAN.ENG.AUBURN.EDU Subject: Re: [Veritas-bu] Netbackup 7.1 Migration The plan I went with was to build the new hardware 1st and give it the same name and IP address as the original master server. Then upgrade the NetBackup version. This path is approved by Symantec and does not involve Symantec personnel in any fashion. The media servers will recognize the new master immediately because it has the same DNS name and IP address, and there will be very minimal downtime. [Veritas-bu] FW: Vmware files to be backed up
Hi all - We've just upgraded to 7.1.0.4 recently and have started testing the VM backups using enterprise client. I do see that we're getting the vmdk files backed up, but don't see the others that our VM guy says we need to do a restore. This is my first attempt at this VM backup. All the documentation I've seen doesn't mention these other files needed for restore, just the vmdk's. I think he's saying this as he's been using vRanger, and it picks up these other files, which are in the same folder as the vmdk's. Is Veritas just not getting them, or are they needed for a full VM restore, or am I looking in the wrong place in the restore GUI? I do see the vmdk's in the restore gui, not the other files. Obviously, I'm just getting going on this, and perhaps I messed something up in the backup config... Re: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup 7.5.0.1 restores fail when restoring large numbers of files?
I've noticed this in the 7.5 operational notes: If you attempt to restore a large number of files such as 2,000,000, the restore job may remain in the queue state in the NetBackup Administration Console. If that happens, you cannot restore those files. This issue is the result of the bprd process, which uses almost 100% of the CPUutilization and a significant amount of memory. These two things together, causes the restore job to remain in the queued state We're debating on whether to go to 7.5.0.1 or 7.1.0.4. I guess I was following the instruction on the online download page... I'll have a look at the pdf manual, I'm assuming you're referring to... I'm only at one day spent, so I have a few hours to spare yet...! :) Thanks From: Ed Wilts [mailto:ewi...@ewilts.org] Sent: Wednesday, July 29, 2009 3:14 PM To: Kalusche, Dan Cc: veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu Subject: Re: [Veritas-bu] NOM upgrade problem to 6.5.4 On Wed, Jul 29, 2009 at 2:27 PM, Kalusche, Dan dan.kalus...@andersencorp.com wrote: Just wondering if anyone's run into this one... I've upgraded the master to 6.5.4 to bypass a HP patch problem on some clients. I've attempted to upgrade the NOM server to 6.5.4, but it'll hang about 3/4 of the way through the process, and then rolls back stating that it can't finish the upgrade. For starters, you MUST follow the instructions in the installation guide. If you don't, you'll get this. Ask me how I know :-) You must install the authentication services first (they've been updated for 6.5.4) and you have to reboot when it tells you to reboot. Make sure you're following the installation instructions for this package too. If you use non-default passwords here, you MUST enter them during the NOM install. It took me 2 days to get NOM installed. Re: [Veritas-bu] Upgrading NetBackup from 5.1 to 6.5.3
When we upgraded on HP-UX, we had a couple bomb outs during the process as some files that were slated to be upgraded were still being used... Be sure that all NB processes on the master are stopped prior to the upgrade... We lost about an hour on that one... Does anyone out there who has already performed this upgrade have any words of caution or gotcha's that they can offer? My solution consists of one Solaris 9 master server and two Solaris 9 media servers connected to 10 LTO2 tapes drives via fibre. The clients are a mixture of Windows, Linux and Solaris but they will be upgraded at a later date. Thanks in advance, Steve. __ This email has been scanned by the MessageLabs Email Security System. Re: [Veritas-bu] NetBackup for Oracle 6.5.3
6.5.2 should be fine... We're running it everywhere with 6.5.3 and 6.5.3.1 and things are fine... We're using the oracle agent, and I see that there is no 6.5.3 for the Oracle agent, only 6.5.2. My understanding is that these add-ons must be at the same level as the client. Did anything change in 6.5 so that the add-ons can be at a lower patch level than the client (6.5, 6.5.1, or 6.5.2 agent with a 6.5.3 client) or are we going to be stuck at a 6.5.2 client if we want to use the Oracle agent? -- Jack Forester, Jr. Senior Recovery Administrator Mylan 1000 Hampton Center Morgantown, WV 26505 jack.fores...@mylan.com Phone: +1.304.554.6039 Cell: +1.412.805.5313 == CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE: This e-mail message and all attachments transmitted with it may contain legally privileged, proprietary and/or confidential information intended solely for the use of the addressee. [Veritas-bu] Netbackup backing up a dpm server
We're recently incorporated a dpm server to back up large fileservers in our enterprise, and would like it to also back up remote Microsoft servers. We're running Netbackup 6.5.3.1, currently, on the master/media servers, and 6.5.3 on the clients. Does Netbackup support backing up the replicated files on the dpm server? I've done some google searches on this topic, and seem to get a lot of hits that dance around the subject, but haven't seen a direct answer to that question. Any help or info that you have would be greatly appreciated. Re: [Veritas-bu] Warning about HP-UX 11.11 patch PHSS_38154
I've found that Patch PHSS_38140 causes the same problems for HPUX 11.23 and Veritas Netbackup 6.5.x. It was part of the September 2008 QPK bundles, and Veritas stopped working. We've removed the patch, and Netbackup works again. Unfortunately, it ALSO supersedes PHSS_30968, a patch which Symantec recommends that you do not install. They recommend that because if you do install it, bpbkar on a client being backed up fails (before doing anything) with the message aCC runtime: Use of -mt must be consistent during both compilation and linking. (I think this has something to do with linking with the OS's pthreads library and differences between the HP and Veritas build chains, but don't quote me on that.) We're awaiting response from each vendor but, for now, if your HP Account Advocate suggests you install patch PHSS_38154 on any HP-UX 11.11 system where you run NetBackup (really, any: this affects the client portion's behavior), don't do it. -- gabriel rosenkoetter Radian Group Inc, Unix/Linux/VMware Sysadmin / Backup Recovery gabriel.rosenkoet...@radian.biz, 215 231 1556 ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu
[Veritas-bu] Can Netbackup import raw Backup Exec files?
I've run into an unusual request regarding a restoration... We've been requested to restore a backup exec image onto one of our systems. We are currently running 5.1 MP5. The backup exec images are files that were shipped to us on disk. Is there any way to import that into Netbackup? I've imported BE created tapes before, but never raw backup files. The short answer is to upgrade NetBackup to the current release. http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/295433.htm In NetBackup 6.5, the importing of images written by Backup Exec for Windows was supported with versions 7.0 through 9.1 via use of the Backup Exec Tape Reader. Beginning with the NetBackup 6.5.1 release update, this support was expanded to include regular filesystem (NTFS) images written by Backup Exec versions 10.0, 10d and 11d as well. Beginning with the NetBackup 6.5.2 release update, ALL Backup Exec 10/10d images can be imported using the Backup Exec Tape Reader. There are plans in future NetBackup release updates to support images written by Backup Exec 12 as well as database images and VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) snapshot images written by Backup Exec 11d; however, as of the 6.5.2 release update these images cannot be imported using the Backup Exec Tape Reader. .../Ed Ed Wilts, RHCE, BCFP, BCSD, SCSP, SCSE [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu
Re: [Veritas-bu] Using Datalink for NetBackup Support
We use Datalink and I've been pleased with them. They are the initial line of support, and if they can't solve the problem, they'll open a call with Symmantec. My experience is that they'll respond a little faster when you open a call online through their support website. We haven't had any priority one calls, so I can't comment on immediate help...
