Folks,
Have you ever experienced a defrag utility resetting the archive
bit? It appears that we may. We had a server last night backup about
95% of it's file store on it's internal disk (defragged by diskkeeper)
while a SAN drive backed up about 5% (not managed by diskkeeper). This
was all on a Differentil-Incermental schedule. The client is set to use
the archive bit for differentials, so we're wondering if diskkeeper may
have reset the archive bit, or actually set it on numerous files, on
defrag. Also, the defrag would have ran in-between backups.

Hey
all,

I
have a mind boggling problem, I have a bunch of media which is the following:

-
when reports run on the pool, it is reported as protected for 1 year

-
when i run bpexpdate on any media to expire it immediately, my system reports
that the media does not exist

-
when i run media contents report of any of those media, i get a bunch of backup
IDs which do not show up in the client backups report

-
when i run bpexpdate on the backup IDs themselves, i also get that no backup ID
exists with the ID i listed

-
when i try to erase the media, NB says its assigned and cannot be erased

What
i am trying to do is delete these media and redefine them (as if completely
new) without changing their barcode IDs.

Any
help will be greatly appreciated.

NB:
Is there a utility or something which will fix inconsistencies inside the
database ? maybe and export/import thing which will automatically do a
cleanup of old/invalid/inconsistent entries ?

Title: netbackup DB inconsistency ?

Ha, thats pretty good. See about 2
years ago, I opened a case with NetBackup because we were having a lot of weird
issues, and the support guy said I bet you have database inconsistencies as a
result of things like media servers being decommissioned improperly, etc

So he ran a consistency checker and sent
me the output, and I said, great, please send me the consistency checker as I
would like to run it from time to time. He said, nope, its not out for public
release, so I said, fine, Ill write my own. When I was done, I called
them back, asked them to run it and send me output, which they did, then I ran
mine, and the same tapes were listed exactly. The output is slightly
different, from a look and feel

Anywho, use whichever you want. I named
mine nbcc.pl for netbackup consistency checker.. I think mine runs pretty
quick, we have over 8000 media and it runs in about 60 90 seconds. You
should run it when there is zero or little activity on the backup system, and
you can catch it when its doing cleanups, so I always run mine a couple of
hours apart to verify if everything is good.

But it helps, sometimes I find media that
is assigned in volume and media database but not in images, and verify with
bpimmedia, so you can vmquery deassignbyid and bpexpdate those tapes

You need to use the Netbackup Catalog
Consistency Utility (NBCC), found here. It will run against all the databases
and create reports. It doesn't fix anything itself, but with this info and a
case with Veritas, you can get it fixed. Note, this only works on 4.5 - 5.1
environments.

I'm actually just about to start the
utility on one of my environments myself.

[Veritas-bu] Help, media issues

2006-08-22 Thread Lewick, Taylor
Hi all, having an issue that is stumping me...

This past weekend we moved one of our tape libraries.
It has LTO1 and LTO2 drives and media in it.

I can see all the drives okay, and LTO1 backups are working fine.
When I kick off an LTO2 backup job, it immediately freezes any tape it
tries to load. If I let it keep running, it just keeps freezing more
and more tapes.

The only thing it says is...FREEZING media ID LL1535, it is unmountable
and cannot be used for backups.

Media is in correct volume pool, volume group, barcode rules are
correct, and I even checked that it was loaded into the library
correctly, i.e. not loaded backwards and write protect tab is not set.
Furthermore, we haven't made any changes to the above listed attributes.
I have tried stopping and starting NetBackup several times, no help.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Taylor

This might sound dumb, but after you moved the library did you run a
inventory from netbackup? I have seen this error before when netbackup
thinks a slot has one type of media and it find another.

Shared storage option. We have several media servers, but we just zone
all drives to all media servers (except for SAN media servers that back
only themselves up) so it becomes a whatever is available type of
situation. We have several hundred to a few thousand clients so we
want to make sure something is always available, so we limit the amount
of drives that can be going at one time on a give media server...

Also, separate question, why would you ever put 30 drives on a server?
I
guess if a lot of them are slow that might work, but most servers cannot

handle more than 2-4 LTO2 drives and definitely not more than 4 LTO3
drives unless you have at least a DL585 + 10GBIT, even then with 4
drives
you'll nearly max out the 10GBps card if you could push that much.

[Veritas-bu] LTO Gen3 read LTO Gen2 tapes

2006-08-09 Thread Lewick, Taylor
I have been told repeatedly that Ultrium LTO3 drives can read LTO2 tapes
for restores.

Today we actually have a reason to try this. Out LTO3 drives are in one
tape library, the LTO2s at another at a different location.

We need to do the restore where the LTO3 drives are located.

We configured the the drives using shared storage option, and the LTO3s
are configure to use media of HCART3, and the LTO2s are configured to
use media of HCART2.

We loaded the tapes in and tried the restore, but it is failing with
requested number of drives are not available.

Do we need to temporarily change one of the LTO3 drives to be of type
HCART2? We are thinking that's all we need to do.

Thanks,
Taylor

Unix server run bppllist policy-name (policy-name is the name of one of your
policies) and send me the output. I want to see if it is the same output
as the 5.x command. If you can, run it for a policy that has two or three
schedules.

[Veritas-bu] 1 Master server, 2 libraries, 2 robotic control hosts equals problems

2006-06-22 Thread Lewick, Taylor
We are currently operating out of two separate data centers.

So we have one master server, called master which is a robotic control
host for the library at Data center 1.

Then at data center 2, I have another media server there, we'll call is
media1, that is also a robotic control host.

Everything is working well, backups are running, etc, no global device
conflicts, etc.

However, when the operators use vltopmenu (on the master server, vault
is only installed on the master server) to try and do the ejects for the
library at data center 2, we have problems. The ejects never happen and
the session never comes back to them.

I noticed the vault jobs for the library at the second data center were
failing. So I typed vltadm and checked and sure enough the robotic
control host for the library is listed as master, and not media1. I
changed this, saved it, even checked in vault.xml to make sure the
change took, re-ran the vault job and bingo, vault runs perfectly.

A couple of hours later, checking with vltadm and now the robotic
control host for the library at data center 2 is back to master. Its
getting changed somehow.

Does anyone know what I need to do to make sure this change is
permanent?

Tpconfig -d on the master and media server show robotic control host is
media server for the 2nd library...

Thanks,
Taylor

a recent issue where some policies are not starting.

Schedules are set well, policies are
active, clients are correct, these jobs dont error, they just never
start. Anyone else seeing this, and any idea what to check for?

Thanks,

I would be thinking that is much easier/more reliable then the Java GUI.

[Veritas-bu] Change retention on image and media, or just image

2006-04-13 Thread Lewick, Taylor

I have some backups that need to be
retained for longer then the standard 4 week retention.

I only want to affect the images for 1
client. if I use bpexpdate and tell it to change the retention on the
media id it changes the retention of every image on that media. That
normally isnt a problem, but it changes the retention of any tapes that
were multiplexed with this tape correct?

So my question is, if I use bpexpdate and
change just the retention level of an image, say from 4 weeks to 10 weeks, what
happens to the media that the image is on in 4 weeks? When it gets
brought back will NetBackup just overwrite that image?

Thanks,
Taylor

[Veritas-bu] tpautoconf, vmglob, tpconfig

2006-04-11 Thread Lewick, Taylor
Is there one really good source of documentation of when you should use
tpconfig, tpautoconf, and vmglob for actions like upgrading or changing
the robotic controller...

If you just do an update using tpconfig, does that also update the
global device database, or does that happen by stopping and starting
netbackup?

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned/discovered this, but on my master

bpcoverage -c client-name is core dumping but only on certain clients.
And the clients that are failing don't have anything in common.

Known issue, will be fixed in MP5. I have had an answer from Veritas
saying that the MP3 binary works with no issues on MP4.

[Veritas-bu] Flash Backup on Unix Client, multiple data streams, how to do in 5.1?

2005-12-15 Thread Lewick, Taylor

Hi all, recently upgraded to NB 5.12 MP4
from 4.5 FP6

I have a few flash backup clients, and
according to the documentation in 5.1, the only way I can figure out how to set
up a flash policy on a unix client that uses multiple data streams, i.e. backing
up multiple raw partitions and sending them to multiple tape devices is under
the section Configuring FlashBackup in the Earlier Manner (UNIX
only).

This is fine, it works, but it says in the
documentation, this is only being supported for backwards compatibility and
will go away in the future. So is anyone out there backing up a unix
client via FlashBackup with a 5.1 advanced client and using multiple data
streams? How did you get this to work? Is there a way to specify
multiple cache devices? In the 5.1 documentation under the new method I
read that you only can define one cache device.

Again, I dont have a problem using
the older version, its just the documentation makes it sound as if this is not
preferred, but it does a poor job of specifying how to handle multiple data
streams

Thanks,

Taylor

I can get to the first page, so I know the nbar webserver/tomcat is working,

RE: [Veritas-bu] Huge incrementals, with little data change

2005-11-17 Thread Lewick, Taylor
Title: Message

I tried using time stamp. Didnt
work, the only solution is to turn of TIR, which if you do a weekly full then TIR
doesnt really get you that much in my opinion.

TIR is helpful if you did a full once a
month, then if you had to do a massive restore you wouldnt want it
restoring all the files that users have since deleted but were backed up. But how much data
change is present once a week? Depends on the footprint of the data of course,
but for ours it was file shares and users werent deleting much, its
the other way around, they are pack rats and store everything.

All,

Here
is the situation, I have a server that has about 250Gb of used space, and the
incrementals are backing up over 215 GB every night, this is a remote office
and there is not that much activity on the client to warrant the incrementals
backing up that much data every day.

The
NBU Environment is:

Win2k3
Master/Media
NBU
4.5 FP7

Client
is a Windows 2k3
NBU
4.5 FP6

I am
having a very difficult time trying to figure out why all this data is being
backed up every night.

Does someone have a script or an easy way
