Re: [Veritas-bu] Question regarding (71) none of the files in the filelist exist

2008-04-02 Thread Preston, Douglas L
Not sure why it missed it, but from my understanding of the include /
exclude list formats
*.vmx should be all you need in your include list to backup any .vmx
file anywhere on that system that is on a filesystem you have selected.

I use this same entry well almost in my exludes. *.dbf
This prevents the .dbf files from being backed up regardless of the file
system the dba's have moved them to.

We use this wild card in our backup selection
/vmfs/volumes/[a-zA-Z]*/*/*.vmx to backup just the vmx files from a
single ESX host. In troubleshooting why I received this error, I learned
that between the backup window for the ESX client, an engineer deleted
the original VM (DCTZIQPVIEW02) and then re-provisioned a new VM on a
different LUN using the same server name. Anyone have a clue as to why
would I get this error? I would've thought by using the wild card that
NBU wouldn't care where the file existed from one backup to the next of
a specific file.

Old path to the file which the error 71 was generated.
/vmfs/volumes/QAVOL4/DCTZIQPVIEW02/DCTZIQPVIEW02.vmx

New path to the file where the re-provisioned VM was created.
/vmfs/volumes/QAVOL3/DCTZIQPVIEW02/DCTZIQPVIEW02.vmx

All,

I've got 6.5.1 installed on a Windows 2003 Master and the GUI above the
activity monitor doesn't seem to refresh. For example, if I delete a
failed job it still shows the machine up top with a red ex. Also when
I've got zero activity on the tape drives I still show two disks writing
data. Refreshing the screen does not help. Anyone else running into
this? Its more of an annoyance than anything else.

Im getting the same...

There are about 40 tapes in the scratch pool and none are frozen or
suspended I even tried moving a tape into the job with no avail

this is how I have my system set up

Policy Z using volume pool (X Y) Pool Y is used to take a duplicate of
X off site it started with just the pool Y part of the job giving the
error unable to allocate new media for backup, storage unit has none
available(96) now both are for some reason even though there are two
copies there seems to be 3 jobs running in Activity Monitor rather that
1 for each of the copy??

we have 1 master server with 3 media servers for different domains that
don't talk to each other (apart from Master server which talks to all)..
At the moment were just doing manual backups so these are getting kicked
of by me and the error is within minutes restarted all the server but
the same thing keep happening

Thanks for you help

Re: [Veritas-bu] Recover from hot catalog secondary copy

2008-01-24 Thread Preston, Douglas L
This is the steps to restore from hot catalog backups. This works from
6.0GA through 6.5GA I have not tried it yet on 6.51
I use multiple copies in my hot catalog policy, the Media are written at
the same time in my catalog backup
I do not duplicate the hot catalog backups with my duplication jobs. I
keep one on-site and one off-site.
For DR I restore from the off-site copy.
My hot catalog policy also creates a DR-image on disk and it gets
attached to my recovery report emails.

X00919 is primary copy.
X01011 is secondary copy.
VltCat-Backup-1 is my hot catalog backup policy.
snetbu1 is my master server.

Following this procedure you should be able to restore from primary or
secondary copy.
This is from my recovery report for my vault session.
I have used this in DR testing and it works every time.

-

You should create a detailed disaster recovery plan to follow should it
become
necessary to restore your organization's data in the event of a
disaster. A
checklist of required tasks can be a tremendous tool in assisting
associates in
triage. For example, after the facility is safe for data to be
restored, the
power and data infrastructure need to be verified. When these tasks are
completed, the following scenarios will help to quickly restore the
NetBackup
environment, and in turn, restore applications and data.

Disaster Recovery Procedure using duplicated Storage Unit Images

1. Install NetBackup.
2. Configure the devices necessary to read the media listed
above.
3. Inventory the media.
4. Run one of these:
bpimport -create_db_info [-server name] -id X00919
bpimport -create_db_info [-server name] -id X01011
5. Run:
bpimport -policy VltCat-Backup-1 -cn copy number
6. If recovering from other than the primary copy
   Run:
bpchangeprimary -copy copy number -pn VltCat-Backup-1
7. Run:
bprecover -r -nbdb
8. Run
bprestore -T -w [-L progress_log] -C snetbu1 -t 35 -p
VltCat-Backup-1 -X -s 120126 -e 120126 /

Disaster Recovery Procedure without the DR Image File
NOTE: ONLY ATTEMPT THIS AS A LAST RESORT
If you do not have the attachment included with this email, use the
following
instructions to recover your catalog:

1. Install NetBackup.
2. Configure the devices necessary to read the media listed
above.
3. Inventory the media.
4. Run one of these:
bpimport -create_db_info [-server name] -id X00919
5. Go to the following directory to find the DR image file
   VltCat-Backup-1_120126_UBAK:
   G:\Program
Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\images\snetbu1\120100\tmp
6. Delete the other files in the directory.
7. Open VltCat-Backup-1_120126_UBAK file and find the
BACKUP_ID
(for example: snetbu1_120126).
8. Run:
bpimport [-server name] -backupid snetbu1_120126
9. Run:
bprestore -T -w [-L progress_log] -C snetbu1 -t 35 -p
VltCat-Backup-1 -X -s 120126 -e 120126 /
10. Run the BAR user interface to restore the remaining image
database
if the DR image is a result of an incremental backup.
NOTE: This backup has multiple copies enabled, you may need to change
primary
images with the following command.
bpchangeprimary -copy number -pn VltCat-Backup-1 [-sd mm/dd/
[ HH:MM:SS ] ] [-ed mm/dd/ [ HH:MM:SS ] ]
11. To recover the NetBackup relational database, run:
bprecover -r -nbdb
12. Stop and Start NetBackup
13. Configure the devices if any device has changed since the
last
backup.
14. To make sure the volume information is updated, inventory
the media
to update the NetBackup database.

I edited the registry (against the Symantec off shore tech advice) and
removed the services so I quit getting complaints about the service not

I'm looking into whether or not this is true. If it is, it's time for
an email campaign.

Some see it as a security hole, and I think that's ridiculous. Anybody
who is root/Administrator on a NetBackup master can push any file to any
client any time they want via a backup/restore command. Removing bpgp
only makes it take a few minutes instead of a few seconds.

Other complaints about it over the years have been that it doesn't check
for like/like. You can overwrite a directory with a file if you tell it
to. For example, the following command would be VERY BAD!

WRONGWAY# bpgp to client /etc/hosts /etc #DON'T DO THIS

While this would be perfectly valid syntax with copy, cp, rcp, mv, etc,
it is NOT proper syntax with bpgp. The command above would overwrite
the /etc DIRECTORY with /etc/hosts, which, of course, would not be good
for your client. (Some have even overwritten their root mount point.)
Perhaps they got too many calls from people that did just that.

Of course, about five lines of code could have fixed that problem. It
doesn't allow you to copy a directory, but it doesn't check if what
you're copying to is a directory. A simple check that the target file is
or is not a directory would have sufficed. If it was a directory, it
could just exit with error. But they chose instead to just pretend the
command didn't exist. It's not documented; there's not even a Usage
statement in the command itself, even if you do strings. If you call
support and complain they tell you it's not supported.

What about the new nbgp:

# ls -l /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/*gp
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/nbgp

The old syntax apparently doesn't work. What DOES work? (Let's not try
this on a production system, shall we?)

Also, is the new nbgp on Windows?

Correct. You can also make the clones mount as a drive letter and back

Unfortunately I do not control the Windows server, I will ping the guys
responsible and see what method they are using, also you are using Cross

Mount points correct? Without that option, no files get backed up.

Not sure where it is set at but there is an option to backup the files
that the symlinks point to instead of the symlink. Then on restores the
actual files will be in your alternate restore path instead of symlinks
that can't link.

In testing the setup I backed up a Solaris 8 client via a Windows 2003

tried to restore to another location on the client but it was only
partialy successfull. I get a lot of the following:

Obviously it's having problems restoring these symlinks but any ideas

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Unix Master Server Recovery

Every year we go to Sungard and test disaster recovery of our Netbackup
Unix Master server on dissimilar hardware. I just upgraded from 5.1 to 6.0
MP4.

With 5.1 is was able to

Put down the master server mksysb backup image

Deleted the files below - since im recovering to dissimilar hardware -
original configs on catalog are no longer valid.
  “storage_units” file.
  “robotic_def” file.
  “globDB” file.
  “ltidevs” file.

Then the bprecover command./bprecover –r –tpath /dev/rmt1.5.

Then ran the wizard to rediscover the new devices.

This process worked fine with 5.1.

I want to know if this a viable process with 6.0? Again, recovering to
dissimilar hardware.
Right now I'm running both hot and cold (after running vaulting) catalog
backups.
Any suggestions?

Re: [Veritas-bu] Preventing duplication from using tapes

2007-11-06 Thread Preston, Douglas L
You can change the media from those servers to a different (duplater)
media pool and modify your duplication process to not duplicate that
pool

I do that here, I duplicate 10% of our servers data and send the
original tapes from the other 90% offsite.
It just takes customizing the duplication selections. To duplicate the
that tapes you wish to duplicate at a later time create a separate
duplication job that only selects the duplater pool.

The best way would be to write the image to a disk staging storage unit
- it's then available for restores as well as dupes at the same time.
The next choice would to be to write the image to a different media pool
and schedule a manual duplication at a different time than your standard
duplications. I think either would solve your issue.

The one thing you have to watch out for is that you don't unnecessarily
delay that duplication - after all, it's your production data that
you're protecting. Make sure that the duplications are still
automatically scheduled so that nobody forgets about them.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Need some help

2007-10-16 Thread Preston, Douglas L
Symantec could make this easier on a lot of us if we could actually
access the database. So far I haven't tried getting the database userid
or password from them but those would make fixing some of this type of
problem nice. I had over 100 media that showed they were assigned but
they were not in the emm database. I could find no way to deassign them
or make them usable again even though they all had 0 images on them. I
spent months on this issue (not a lot of time during the months due to
having lots of spare media.) but if I had access to the database it
would have been resolved in 30 minutes. Same as the dead media server
issue which I had to wait for media to expire and deassign.

Hmm, I have had to do that with jnbSA with 5.1 you were/are able to

I just upgraded NBU from v5.0MP7 to v6.0MP5 and have some unusual
behavior concerning the Catalog Backups. With the previous version the
catalog backup would run when the scheduled backups were completed for
the day. We have some policies that are for Oracle backups using the
Oracle agent and those wouldn't kick off a catalog backup after they
ran. After the upgrade we now have catalog backups running anytime an
Oracle backup is finished executing which means we have several catalog
backups a day. We've had some backup failures when a catalog backup is
running at the same time a new Oracle backup is trying to start. I've
checked the Offline Catalog backup configuration and it is set for
After each session of scheduled backups. As the Oracle backups aren't
scheduled by Netbackup but initiated from the client I not sure what's
going on.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Ed.

Can I manually change retention level of tapes?

Does your library support partitioning? That may be a simple way to go and then
you can split the drives and cartridge slots and have the best of both worlds.
All you would have to do in Netbackup is add a second library.

As promised,
here's what I've got.

There's no exactly straight solution for this problem. Because basically
Netbackup already separate the HCART2 and HCART3.
So I'm dealing with 4 points on this problem

1) cartridge type
2) density on the image
3) drive type
4) ACS side.

Every tricks on Netbackup side, always makes me have to sacrificed the other
thing.
Let say I try to use the API_BARCODE_RULES, and make all HCART2 on ACS mapped
to HCART3 on Netbackup, how bout the density on the image? because it already
on HCART2 density. You can run a command to change the image density, but it
have to be done one by one, so painfull... Or even vice versa, the LTO3 drive
had to be set as HCART2 also.. Looks like it's not the win-win solution for
this..

There's still few tricks, but looks like not recommended by Symantec also...
So... who ever needed can take the conclusions for this problem..

Thanks all..

be moved to scratch if they are now empty and actually came from

retention level 6)

I used the command:

Are you SURE you want to recalculate expiration dates on all
images that
meet the following criteria:
policy Users
retention will be changed to 8(1 year)

Continue?(y/n)

I answers Yes, and the system seems to process for some minutes.

After this I check if this have moved tapes to Scratch, but no.
Beacuse this
should have realeased a lot of tapes, and moved it to scratch

Is it something I missing here? Do I have to manually change

I didn't have any gotcha's. I am running 6.5 in production on my master
server and 5 san media servers and a media server. I have about 50 of
my 250 clients upgraded to 6.5. The rest of the clients are 5.1 MP4
through 6.0 MP5.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Backing up a SAN

2007-09-25 Thread Preston, Douglas L
If you find a way let me know.

I have 1 master, 1 media and 5 san media servers. The san media servers
are way too stressed during the backup of their millions of small files.

On some of our database servers we use clone drives at the san level and
we snap the clones off and attach them to the master server and the
media server and back them up as local drives. Once all backups are
done for the night we snap them back to the original machines to be
resynchronized with the primary disk.

I experimented with a small 100 mb lun between the media server and the
master server and windows did not see the changes on the media server
that were made to the drive on the master server. Only way to get it to
see the changes was to remove the lun mapping and re attach it. I think
you will find that you will lose a lot of data doing such an operation
in real life.

How do most people back up SAN data with NetBackup? Currently, we have a
legacy setup where the NB client on each SAN-connected host system backs
up the SAN mounts that it sees as a regular file system. Obviously, this
is very inefficient as it puts load on each client and requires
additional network traffic.

I thought about a media server connected directly to the SAN, but then
there are locking issues with concurrent access to LUNs that are in use
by the client systems.

Can this be done properly without some sort of extra software/hardware
solution?

Eric

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Catalog sharing

I have several remote sites that contain their own master servers. I
want to backup to a Data Domain at each site and replicate the backup
data to a central site, which also contains its own master server. At
this central site I have a need to offload some remote backups to tape
for infinite retention.

I know there are several ways to handle this, all requiring some
manipulation. The most sensible option would be to replace the masters
at each remote site with a media server talking to the central location
- but I cant get the buy in to do that. So, I am trying to figure out
the easiest option.

Is there any type of catalog sharing in 6.0 or 6.5? I am reviewing
documentation but so far havent seen anything.

My only other options I am thinking are to backup as normal and
replicate to central - then use the master at that site to import the
backup images into its catalog and perform a bpduplicate. Obviously
this is cumbersome.

Does anyone have other ideas?
Thanks for the help.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Error 41 on Catalog Backup using NBU 6.0MP4?

2007-08-28 Thread Preston, Douglas L
 CLIENT_READ_TIMEOUT to the
/usr/openv/netbackup/bp.conf file and set it to increase the timeout
interval.
Make sure all recommended NetBackup patches are installed. Check the
Symantec support Web site for current patch information. (Go to
www.support.veritas.com. Then select NetBackup followed by files and
updates.)
Run the NetBackup Configuration Validation Utility (NCVU) for the
associated NetBackup nodes. Note the pack checks in section two.

Add the CLIENT_READ_TIMEOUT values to the master server, media server,
and client when a NetBackup database extension product is installed. The
values should all be the same for each server. The value set is
dependent on the size of the database being backed up.
See the NetBackup Administrator's Guide, Volume II, for more information
on CLIENT_READ_TIMEOUT.

Make sure enhanced authentication is configured correctly. For example,
the following may result in status code 41: host A is configured to use
enhanced authentication with host B, but host B is not configured to use
enhanced authentication with host A. In this case, connections from host
B to host A are likely to fail with status code 41. Connections from
host A to B are likely to fail with authentication errors (status code
160).

In windows you can run this command.

C:\Program Files\VERITAS\netbackup\bin\bpdbm -consistency

While it checks the catalog it will move corrupt entries to

will complete. Using this command to do the consistency check and fix
it does not delete the corrupt entries so if a fix for the corrupt
entries ever happen you still have them. On our catalog it takes
approxamately 2 hours to run. Our catalog is 60+ gigs.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Has anyone run a database consistency check
recently?

Hi all,

We have been having issues with our catalog (running NBU 6.0 MP4) and
have found that our catalog is very inconsistent. We have been running a
utility from Symantec called consistency_gather.pl, which basically
grabs image, media and vol DB information. We send that through to
Symantec to produce a report, which we receive back.

We have two NetBackup 6.0 environment, and both are reporting that we
have inconsistencies in our catalog.

Has anyone else run this utility and obtained a report from Symantec.

In one of our report, it stats that of the 375000 images that we have,
about 4700 of them could be lost due to being overwritten. We also have
multiple tapes that appear to be assigned to multiple media servers, and
the list goes on.

Anyone else run into this type of issue?

Regards
Ian.

I have been having the same problem since I moved to NBU 6.0 GA I am now
at NBU 5.0 MP5. I havent opened a ticket with support yet as I have
media available. When the count reaches 100 I am going to open the
ticket. So far I am up to 96 media in that state. They don't exist in
the EMM Database but are assigned.
If you or anyone else finds a solution for this I sure would appreciate
it.

I've got a growing list of media in the robot that stay perma-assigned.
If I run a vmquery on the media id it shows no expiration date, and
bpimmedia shows no images on the media. Yet, the media never revert to
scratch or ever get written to again. Some of them bpexpdate (even with
no images?) and some come back as media id not found in EMM database. I
thought all this media nonsense was over and done with but I guess not.
Anyone else having similar issues / is there a fix I'm not aware of?

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Question about netbackup in DR

Recently I did go trough DR test and I did find hard way of recovering
my servers... Well the biggest problem that we were having was that in
our production environment we had Windows 64bit running NetBackup
server/media server. and in our DR we did not request that so they did
give us Windows 32bit instead.. well my catalogs could not be loaded
becuase of that difference... so then we did go and preloaded machine
with 64bit OS and whole installation went just perferc and recovery was
on its way.. but here are my questions regarding my DR test:

1) is there any way to use different Platrofm 64bit vs 32bit? how about
different OS Windows vs Solaris for catalog recovery? Is there any way
to conver while inporting catalogs? I suspect that answer is no but I
wanted to ask you experts out there...
2) When we do backups we do have primary copy and then we send a
duplicate tapes offiste... so I did have two copies in catalog tape lets
say 1 and tape 00037, when I did select files to recover it said it
was waiting for tape 1 and did not even look for tape 00037, so we
did go and expired tape 1 and then it was able to read tape 00037.
Is there any way not to have do that? What if tape 00037 was bad and I
requested tape 1 to be delivered and my catalog is already expired,
I would then have to scan my tape or reimport my catalog I guess but
that is stupid if you ask me...

I am not an expert thats why I wanted to see if any answers to my
questions.

By the way I did not mention I am using NetBackup 6.0MP4 if that helps
in helping me with my qurestions.

Thank you so much for help.

Chris

Re: [Veritas-bu] full backup not working...

2007-08-16 Thread Preston, Douglas L
Look at the file size of all your fulls in the listing, It looks like
the only ones that actually have data are the vms fulls

If you try to manually
tar -xvzf
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/images/mpn6/118600/MPN6_1186808402_FULL.f.Z
Does it also fail? You should get some sort of error doing it manually
that will probably be more informative than NBU's errors.
I don't know any machines that incremental backups are larger than full
backups.

Re: [Veritas-bu] pb restoring system_state of Windows 2000 SP4

2007-08-09 Thread Preston, Douglas L
I believe the way you need to do that if you are not doing BMR is to
install your indiws into a different folder than the origional folder.
Instead of winnt or windows try installing the fresh install of windows
into a folder called restore. What happens is if you are using the
origional paths then as you restore you overwrite files that are
critical and will cause that issue.

Hi,

Help please...

My environment is:

Master server Solaris 10 NetBackup 5.1 MP5 or 6.0 MP4
Client W2K SP4 client Netbackup 5.1MP5

I try to do a system restore of a W2K SP4 NetBackup client by
running the following process:

- I reinstall on the same hardware system a fresh W2K SP4 server
with the same partitionning and without integrating in a specific
Windows domain.
- I reinstall NetBackup client 5.1MP5
- I run on the client the commande w2koption -restore
-same_hardware 1
- From the NetBackup Administrator java interface, I choose all
the drives and the System_State, select Restore everything to its
original location and choose Overwrite existing files
- The restore run with success.

After a few second, before or after I could ran again the
w2koption -restore -same_hardware 1 command, the W2K goes in an eternal
reboot cycle, and I don't know what is happening ???

Can somebody help me ??

Is it correct to restore System_State withe the Overwrite
existing files option ??

It seems that with W2003 client, I don't have this problem.

Best regard,

Gilles.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Error bptm(pid=3956) SCSI RESERVE failed (reserveunit scsi

2007-07-24 Thread Preston, Douglas L
Dave,
I ended up doing the following steps

1 - Down the library and powering it off
2 - Removed all drives and robots from master server and all media
servers.
3 - Stopped ALL NBU services on master and all media servers.
4 - On master server and all media servers I Deleted all files under the
following paths.
\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\media\drives\
\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\db\media\media\
\Program Files\VERITAS\Volmgr\misc\
5 - Bring the library back up
6 - Start all NBU services on master server and all media servers.
7 - recreate all drives and robots. ( I used the gui wizard to do this
)
8 - Inventory the library to re-add all media to the robot config.

This seemed to work for my SCSI Reserve errors.

I have been trying to get a Veritas/Symantec license quoted. I have had
contact and quotes from at least two different Var's as well as Dell.
Dell is on the third attempt at giving me the proper quote and SKU
description/part number. The two vars are both not sure and give me
different part numbers/descriptions thus making prices with huge
variations in costs. Does anyone else have such problems.

I'm looking for the part number / description for a media server

support so we can move to 6.0. So I need a media server license. The
media server is a Sun V880 ( 8 processors). It is running on Solaris 10.

Any one know how to get the correct information ( Veritas SKU
description ) so I can get proper quotes?

vaulted, recalled, and injected into the library? If I try to use

1.) Run vault job to eject tape
2.) Remove tape from library and sent off
3.) Recall tape
4.) Use ./vltinject to reinsert tape into library
5.) Do necessary restore
6.) ??? How to re-eject tape to send back off-site ???

Unless you used something like esxranger to backup the vmware server instances
to a physical machine then used the existing license to backup the images.
Esxranger is licensed per cpu of the esx box. If it has 4 cpus you would need

I don't have a link at the moment, nor the time to search for it, but I'll back
up what Ed says.

For a Vmware physical server, you need one client license per OS.

F'rinstance, a box running ESX, with Windows and Linux virtual servers on it,
would require 1 windows and 1 linux license.

Do you know if this is publicly documented by symantec/veritas?

The vmware style licensing variation could make for a significant

Re: [Veritas-bu] Determining Number of Additional Client LicensesinNetBackup

2007-07-19 Thread Preston, Douglas L
You can not backup running vm virtual machines one a esx box by backing
up the linux side of the esx box. The only way to backup them up via
netbackup is to purchase a license for each vm virtual machine.
In your example of 10 linux vm virtual machines and 10 windows vm
virtual machines you will need 10 linux and 10 windows licenses for
netbackup to back them up.

We have 8 esx servers running here and some I use esxranger to back them
up but most of the virtual machines we want file level restore
capability so we had to purchase the netbackup licenses.

Yes, but... If you have 10 linux virtuals and 10 windows virtuals
running on a single VMware on linux system, how many NetBackup licenses
do you need?

The prevailing wisdom on the list seems to indicate you need 1 linux
license AND 1 windows license.

To put it more plainly, in the example given, 1 linux license for the
base system is insufficient, and 20 licenses (10 linux and 10 windows)
are not necessary.

If anyone else can corroborate this I'd be glad to hear it.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Status Code 29 - Oracle Database Backup

2007-06-11 Thread Preston, Douglas L
Have you checked the help for result codes yet? This is what it says
for 26

Under problem

A command could not be executed. This can occur because the permissions
of the command do not allow it to be executed, or there is lack of
system resources such as memory and swap space.

Under troubleshoot

Try the following:

1. Check the NetBackup All Log Entries report for clues on where and
why the failure occurred.
2. Check the permissions on the command to be executed.
3. For detailed troubleshooting information, create a debug log
directory for the process that returned this status code, retry the
operation, and check the resulting debug log.

Having something weird going on with my logging.

I know the verbose can stay at 5 at all times and if the directories are
NOT created there will be nothing captured.

My issue is, when I delete the directories from
/opt/openv/netbackup/logs they seem to get created by themselves again.
The only other person that works on this system isn't doing it either.

Is there some setting that I may have set that would create log
directories automatically?

UNIX admin here. How does one turn of VSP/VSS on Windows 2000/2003?
AV?

Also does this advice only hold for Windows 2000/2003 or for any Windows

We have some backups that go incredibly slowly and I'm thinking of
suggesting this to the Windows Admins here to do some testing.

Kevin

First thing, is to turn off VSP / VSS if its Windows 2000 / Windows
2003.

Any AV, should be turned off.

Also look for any large cache files created on your C: Drive - example
being vxfiVspcache_1.tmp (make sure you are set to view hidden or system
files).

Any disk I/O software should be turned off.

Also, try a backup policy (create a test one) that does JUST the C:
drive on its own for this particular client.

Ok, I am looking for help.

I am running a Solaris 9 master server, with 5.1MP3. I have 8
windows servers that I backup, 3 of them are 2000, and 5 of them are on
2003 SP2.

Well, I setup the policy for each server to by ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES,
and also turned on Multistream/Multiplex.

So it kicks off 3 channels: Shadow, C drive, D drive.

C drive is 2 hardware mirrored disk, D drive is a hardware raid
5 of 4 disks.

Well, the C drive backup takes forever! As an example from 1
server

Shadow -- 4 mins (911,909 kbytes)
C drive -- 2 hours 29 mins (49,461 kbytes)
D drive -- 1 hour 54 mins (95,458,574 kbytes)

My exclude list for this server has the standard entries and a
few that I have added.
C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin\*.lock
C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin\bprd.d\*.lock
C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin\bpsched.d\*.lock
C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\Temp
C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Volmgr\misc\*
*.mdf
*.ldf
C:\Windows\NTUninstall*
C:\Windows\PCHEALTH

I am trying to figure out why it takes so long to backup the C
drive. Should I be excluding something? I am at a point that I am
going to remove the C drive from the backup. SQLSERVER is running on
this box(s).

Re: [Veritas-bu] Alerts in NBU NOM

2007-05-22 Thread Preston, Douglas L
There is a way to acknowlege the alert and clear it. Open Nom, go to
monitoring, alerts, details. Find the alert you are getting and check
it. On the left pane find tasks. You can click acknowlege to
acknowlege it and click clear to clear the alert. This should stop you
from getting the alert over and over. If it doesn't then remove the
cleaning tape from your media list. This should stop nom from seeing
it.

Got an usual problem with an alert that I have setup through Netbackup
NOM. It is a cleaning tape alert. I have set up to let me know when
the cleaning on the tapes get down below a certain level. Well, I
received a alert on one of the tapes and have ejected through the NBU
console and removed the tape from the tape pool(s). I am still getting
alerts on that particular tape. Can anyone assist with this issue
before it drives me nuts.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Installing NB6.0MP4 Linux Client

2007-05-18 Thread Preston, Douglas L
Try adding your master server to your /etc/hosts fileI found that my
*nix machines all required the entry in /etc/hosts formated like this
111.111.111.111masterserver.domain.name masterserver
Also make sure in your bp.conf in /usr/openv/netbackup that you have the
master server listed as masterserver and that your client name is is
also specified correctly. I found that using fully qualified names did
not work well for me. If you still have problems try adding an entry in
your c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file for your linux machine
in the same format you did on the linux machine for the master server.

I am new to netbackup and struggling to get this up and running.
I have a windows box Server2003 Enterprise edition housing the net

Enterprise Linux AS 4 houses the mysql database.

Installing the NB server was quite okay and i did a test backup and
restore which worked perfectly. After installation of the Linux client,
i tried connecting the NB Server (Windows 2003 server) to the Linux
Client but it gave me an error that it can connect on socket but after
much troubleshooting and reinstalling the Client and PBX, its now giving
this error messenge that it can't write on socket.

I need assistance from anyone.

What am i doing wrong? What did i miss?

Note the media server that it belongs to.

bpexpdate -m L00162 -d 0 -h media_server

This command will expire the images, remove the entry from mediaDB as

2007-04-30 Thread Preston, Douglas L
Yes, I found that nice little bug during my backup window for a volume
that can only be backed up during a very tight time period, when setting
up a special backup policy for a few of our servers that require
specific date backups. Once the files are installed though it does not
fix it again. So now when I create new date related backups I don't
have all my running jobs fail. They need to put that technote as part
of the installation and setup guide. Always create a calendar related
schedule before you move to production.

http://support.veritas.com/docs/286545 (posted 4/25)

Within NetBackup, this repair will automatically occur when accessing
the calendar dates of any schedule (Figure 1). This could include the
Calendar Schedule tab or the Exclude dates tab within a backup policy or
the disk staging schedule of a disk storage unit. When such a calendar
component is accessed, it triggers Windows to verify the presence of all
the files that are included in the NetBackup installation. If any of
these files are missing, Windows will automatically launch the installer
to repair such missing files. As a part of the repair, the installer
will automatically terminate any NetBackup services. This will result
in the immediate termination of any active backup or restore jobs.
(emphasis is mine)

Hope none of the Windows users out there want to use the Calendar
scheduler. =) And if that technote doesn't generate nightmares by
itself, picture what happens when your NOC or Operations people stumble
upon this issue at 2am in the middle of your largest backup window. Fun
fun fun.

Yet another reason to use UNIX Masters.

Doesn't look like ndmp is an option without using emc's backup software
and some more of their hardware.

Even though EMC say's not to do this, I may play with mounting disk to
both the original server and the backup server at the same time, change
the backup policy to not reset archive bit and see if I break something.
I have a spare 500gb fiber attached drive to play with on my master

some sort of script doing continuous file writes while I do a backup.
Worse case is I have to rebuild the drive.

At the moment we have LTO-2 drives and tapes. When we add the expansion

[Veritas-bu] NDMP with EMC Clariion

2007-04-24 Thread Preston, Douglas L
Is anyone doing NDMP backups with NBU 6.0 MP4 and EMC Clariion SAN
device? I am pushing for an NDMP license to backup the 24TB of disk so
I don't need to pull most of it across the lan. I have 4 san media
servers that backup 12TB buit the other 12 are spread across a lot of
machines and I don't want to keep pulling across the lan due to there is
not enough hours in a day to complete backups and duplications already
and now they want full daily backups of all allocated disk on the
clariion.

Can someone tell me how to exclude certain file types within an NDMP
policy? Specifically, I would like to exclude all checkpoint files
 (*.chkpnt)

Because the NDMP server is in charge of serializing the data, it has to
be the one to exclude files. So this function depends on your NDMP
server.

We are running Netbackup 6.0 MP4 on Solaris 10.

What's the NDMP machine?

I believe for Netapp you'll use

SET EXCLUDE=*.chkpnt

in the list. See the NDMP admin guide page 37/38 for using SET in the
backup list (but not any vendor-specific examples of exluding).

See the OnTAP manuals for the syntax that is allowed when excluding
files (assuming you're using a netapp).

Hi all,

I started an upgrade of my netbackup server (HPUX 11.11) from 5.1 MP5 to
netbackup 6.0MP4. everything seemed to be going smoothly and no errors
were reported in the installation phase.

However, when I started my checks, I found out that only the policies
have been migrated. All device and livrary definitions are gone ! And
whats worse, is that all the media information is gone !

I tried to run the graphical wizard to re-detect drives, an error was
reported by the EMM server and the wizard cancelled out before detecting
anything.

I'll try to restore back my original nb5.1 enviroment but I wanted to
understand what went wrong as I need to upgrade soon.

PS: I'm the kind of guy who doesn't really have time to read a 100 page
installation manual, I'd like to do things fast !

Thanks all,

That's not a cluster, but rather a normal deployment.

assuming the media servers backup their respective sites only, and you don't
want to backup a client at site A to a media server at Site B, you create a
Storage unit on each media server, then create two storage unit groups, one
which includes all Storage Units belonging to the Media servers at site A and
one for Site B, create Policies for each site, point the Policies to the
respective Storage Unit Groups and Bob's yer uncle. Not sure if tha't's Bob

Ok here is my setup and what we want to do. We have 1 master and 6
media servers. 3 media servers are site1 and 3 at site2 with 1 master
controlling both sites (their is a 4gig pipe connecting the 2 sites) . At each
site we have 2 Storagetek L700 libraries and a EMC CDL 740 split into side a
and b. We want to move the robotic control to the master for the L700's and
the CDL and then have each media server see all the libraries at their site. We
want the master to load balance work automatically between the media servers so
not one media server is overloaded while another is idle. This will allow us
to loose a media server without loosing robotic control over a device.

Does anyone have a setup like this where they are clustering servers
together? What software needs to be in place to do this? Thoughts? good or bad?.

Hi,

So, we have an 6.0 environment that has three times now over the course
of the last 2 months stopped accepting or kicking jobs off. The solution
we found previously, before this last Sunday the 11th, was to reboot the
master server.

Unfortunately, now rebooting does not seem to help.
bpbackup -i -p policy does nothing.
No jobid is assigned and no jobs are showing up in the Activity Monitor.
In fact, bperror -U -backstat -by_statcode -hoursago 48 shows that no
jobs have gone off for the last 2 days.

We are at 6.0 MP4 on all of our systems, and the DST patches were
applied awhile back. All system time is correct.

Since this issue has happened before the DST thing, I am thinking this
is something else altogether, but no logs show anything of any use that
I can see, and the front-line support folks have not had any clues at
all.

I see from the Reports-Problems that the consistent error appears to be
connected to the issue:

get_string() failed - premature end of file encountered (5) could not
process request

The error is repeated for each job that would normally fire off. So, the
logs are filled with thousands of the repeated error message.

Anyone else seen anything like this or have any ideas?

TIA!

[Veritas-bu] Adding second master server NBU 6.0 MP4

2007-03-07 Thread Preston, Douglas L
I am in the process of building a new server to act as a second master
server in NBU 6.0 MP4. Can more than one master server share the same
EMM database server? Or would I be better off to have separate EMM
databases for each master server?

I have plans to partition my Adic Scalar I2000 in to two partitions and
split the drives and tape slots 60/40 between the two masters.

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Databses are different between 5.x and 6.0 You will need to upgrade
existing servers and convert your databases to the new EMM format.

Some said that the catalog format was compatible between 5.x and 6.0,
and some said it's not. Can somebody confirm this?

Here is my thoughts:

1) if the catalog format is compatible between 5.x and 6.0, then I'll
just copy /usr/openv/netbackup/db and /usr/openv/volmgr/database from
the old Linux master to the new Solaris server.

2) if the catalog format is not compatible between 5.x and 6.0, then
I'll upgrade the current 5.x Linux master to 6.0, then copy everything
from /usr/openv/netbackup/db and /usr/openv/volmgr/database to the new
Solaris mater running 6.0.

Any problems there?

Thanks,

Rongsheng

Currently our master server is running NBU 5.0 MP5 on a Red Hat

sure which model at this point). So during the upgrade/migration,
we'll be importing things from the linux box to the Solaris box,
things that include policies, catalogs and other DBs. Has anybody done

this before? What would be the best way to import the data including
policies, catalogs, and other information from the old Linux master to

the new Solaris master? I heard that this kind of migration was not

How to manually remove a tape completely from NetBackup/Media Manager.
http://support.veritas.com/docs/208420

Details:
First, if there are images on the tape, they need to be expired. This
can be done by:
 bpexpdate -ev mediaid -d 0

This will not completely free up the tape if the tape is frozen or
suspended, so the command(s):
bpmedia -unfreeze -ev mediaid
or
bpmedia -unsuspend -ev mediaid
may be needed.

At this point there will be no image database entries for that tape and
the media database should show the tape as not assigned therefore
allowing the tape to be reused. However sometimes the image database and
the media manager database can be out of sync, and the tape may show as
still assigned, or if the tape has a NetBackup database backup on it,
there would be no image entry to begin with. When a tape shows an
assigned date, but no images are related to that tape, it will show up
in the available_media report as dbbackup. To tell if a tape actually
has a dbbackup on it, the command:
 vmquery -m mediaid
will show a status, where 0x0 means normal backups, 0x1 means NetBackup
database backup and 0x2 means Storage Migrator.
If it is 0x1, be certain this is not a database backup which will ever
be needed.
If it is 0x2, it is in use by Storage Migrator and understanding of the
use of the tape by Storage Migrator (not covered here) is required.

To free up the tape, when it has an assigned date but no images in the
database, the command:
vmquery -deassignbyid mediaid poolnumber status must be run,
but the status will be displayed as 0x0, 0x1 or 0x2 and needs to be just
0, 1 or 2 in the vmquery -deassignbyid.

At this point the tape is available to be used for backups.

If the tape was bad or destroyed and that is why it is being removed,
the command:
vmdelete -m mediaid
will remove the last remnants of information about it from media
manager.

There are other options which may be specified for the above commands.
Some are to specify server names, volume database host names, etc. If
the NetBackup/Media Manager setup is complex, those options may be
needed. The full paths to the commands mentioned are:

/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bpexpdate
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bpmedia
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies/available_media
/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/vmquery

2007-02-14 Thread Preston, Douglas L
What I found out when I was getting tthese errors was someone on the
network was doing scans of the servers for hardware and software and it
was doing reset on the network card and sometimes on the HBA's on the
master server and the media servers. We had them block scans on the
netbackup master and media servers and the problem went away on master
and three of the media servers. The forth media server was a different
story.

I still had one server that sometimes has an issue but it is one of
those 900 million small files on 2 1tb and 5 500gb luns. The error I
see is network error, but I really suspect the cpu and memory usage
creats a long delay for data communication and netbackup thinks the
network went down. Even if the network went down the backup should
continue since this is a san media server with fiber connections to the
sso drives.

What fixed this server was to break up the drives into multiple streams
so that the file list was not so large as to cause memeory swapping to
disk.

You haven't really answered anything, just talked about how things
should work when everything is OK.

That's just it; NetBackup is not doing anything abnormal here (a.k.a. it's
operating as designed given the environment it's running in). There's nothing
we can do at the software level to fix performance bottlenecks at the
filesystem level; it'll operate as quickly as the system calls allow it to.
Every problem you brought up can be traced back to this one core issue.

Think of it this way: if you fill your gas tank with the wrong type of petrol
and as a result the vehicle starts sputtering, when you bring it to the
mechanic, they'll make the assessment that the engine is working as well as it
can given the circumstances. The problem is the petrol, not the engine.

 1. I could have a problem with my db, but if the bpdbm -consistency 2
check
wont finish who can I tell? If the bpdbm -consistency 2 check hangs,
again how can I tell whats wrong?

Like I said previously, bpdbm -consistency is the tool... we don't have
alternate tools or anything like that (what's the point in re-inventing the
wheel?). You only other option is to manually check each and every image for
oddities. And even then there's no guarantee you'll spot the corruption if it
exists because over half of your images files are going to be in binary format,
which is impossible to examine using your eyeballs.

 2. Maybe I haven?t been clear with my problem. The bpdbm processes
 don?t
go
away, they are always there and are always working with something...
 So
how
 can I move on?

I didn't find any evidence that bpdbm was caught in an infinite loop. All
PID's are making progress with their respective tasks, albiet slow progress.
I even checked to make sure the bpdbm's weren't stepping on each other's feet.
They're all doing seperate tasks independently of each other, and no process
was performing a redundant task that another bpdbm was processing.
All evidnce points to file-read operations taking a lot of time to complete,
and that's a problem that can be fixed by an application.

Let's say for the sake of argument we could change NetBackup's behavior so that
it doesn't spawn so many processes at once (which isn't actually possible, but
let's just assume for a second). Will that solve the problem?
No. It will still have to perform the same number of operations because it
still has to go through the same data set as in the present situation. In
fact, the process might be made *worse* not better, because the entire
operation would in fact take longer.

Disabling it entirely is not possible under NetBackup without shutting down
bpdbm entirely (and it would be a bad idea anyways as the images cleanup
process is vital for the application to function), which means of course then
just about nothing would work under NetBackup. You will get no backups, and
defintely no restores.

So in summary, you have to wait until it finishes on its own. If the process
takes more than 12 hours to complete, that means you're really stuck.
Absolutely nothing can be done at the software level until something is done
with the images database or the filesystem it resides on is fixed.

 4. Our db is about 60-65 GB, there are netbackup customers with much
bigger
nbu databases. And this should by a enterprise solution and therefore
be able to handle this payload.

Not many customers have as many individual images. Keep in mind here that
there's more to this than how much data am I backing up. If the bulk of your
backups are Oracle RMAN, then the number of inodes in your environment
increases dramaticly. I can almost always tell the difference between RMAN
backups and regular

Hi,

I have some idea as were facing the same problem two months back.

If you want to manually check the list of medias to be ejected, go to #
cat
/usr/openv/netbackup/vault/sessions/vault_name/sid_session_id/eject.
list

If you want to automate it
Copy the following scripts(vlt_end_notify, vlt_end_notify.log,
vlt_start_notify, vlt_ejectlist_notify) from
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies onto following path
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin and make the necessary changes in
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/vlt_end_notify(executable shell script)

After the above changes are made test fire a vault and check whether
automation for vault works or not.

Hope the things will work for you.

Hi,

I have some idea as were facing the same problem two months back.

If you want to manually check the list of medias to be ejected, go to #
cat
/usr/openv/netbackup/vault/sessions/vault_name/sid_session_id/eject.

list

If you want to automate it
Copy the following scripts(vlt_end_notify, vlt_end_notify.log,
vlt_start_notify, vlt_ejectlist_notify) from
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies onto following path
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin and make the necessary changes in
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/vlt_end_notify(executable shell script)

After the above changes are made test fire a vault and check whether
automation for vault works or not.

Hope the things will work for you.

My offsite policy which has been working for 3 years has suddenly quit
doing ejects of duplicated media. I even tried creating a special vault
job just to do the eject and it too fails to eject the duplicated media.

The duplication process works fine, the reports work fine.

I can manually eject the media that was duplicated but that isn't a
solution I want to have to do every day.

Does anyone have an idea what may be going on or how to fix it?

You can change the expiring of tapes by backup id using the following
commands:

bpimagelist -l -d mm/dd/yy -e mm/dd/yy | grep IMAGE | awk '{print
bpexpdate -recalculate -backupid $6 -ret 9 yes}'
command_script_to_run

you need to create a file called yes with one line with the word y.
This is required because bpimagelist prompt for a yes.

The -ret 9 is to set the backup to infinite. This command will set the
backup to infinite regardless of how many tapes the image is on.

Ken

We have just shut down one datacenter and we are moving the backup
server and tapes to a separate location. Is there an easy way to set
all the tapes by media_id to infinite with just one running of the
command instead of listing every single media_id? Thanks.

Re: [Veritas-bu] SSO configuration

2007-01-08 Thread Preston, Douglas L
You can share the HBA's that are connected to the san but create a
seperate zone for the master/media servers to the tape drives. We have
an ADIC I2000 with 12 drives 700 slots 1 Master Server 4 San Media
Servers, They share the same HBA's with the San. We have seperate
zones for San and zones for the Adic. Our netbackup servers are all
all Windows.

Our new sun sl500 robot will contain 5 fiber connected tape drives along
with it's own fiber connection.
Currently we have four sun/solaris servers connected to the emc san one
of these is our master/media server

Our goal is to setup two of these as san media servers.

Do we need dedicated hba's on the media and master servers for the
connection to the robot or can we use the existing hba's that are used
for the san.

We are still searching the manuals for the correct config.

Re: [Veritas-bu] NBU 6, MP4 Anyone had issues with hot backup email notifications?

2006-12-14 Thread Preston, Douglas L
I had that same problem after applying MP4 I found my notification cmd
files were moved to C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin\goodies.6.0
and new ones were placed in the bin folder. I just copied the original
cmd files back to the bin folder for it to work. If you are using unix
master servers the files should still be backed up in path under bin.

Apologies if this has already been discussed; I've been off for a week
or so and can't see any obvious thread regarding this.

Since applying MP4, it seems my master no longer sends out
notifications; either scripted ones or hot backup recovery emails. I've
applied MP4 to Masters on 2 different networks, and they both suffer
from the same issue.

Has anyone else had this issue?

Cheers,

[Veritas-bu] Disabling File list / size estimate on backups.

2006-11-01 Thread Preston, Douglas L
Is there a way to disable the file list estiimate for file number and
size that happens before a backup begins? I have a NB 6.0 MP3 media
server with approx 50 million files and 3 TB of disk. It is taking
over 30 hours to back up the system, part of that 36 hours is file list
building that takes over 11 hours on one of the drives and over 13 hours
on one of the other drives. This makes daily backups impossible. If I
can disable the estimates the backups should complete in less than 24
hours. I don't have a problem if the media server runs 24/7 backing up
files. I just can't see it taking over 24 hours.

Media server is backing up local fiber attached data drives.

The media server is win2k3 server
Netbackup Enterprise server 6.0 MP3
The library is an ADIC Scalar I2000 with 12 LTO2 drives and 700 slots.
Drives and robot are fiber attached to the media server.

Fiber zones are split. Data Drives use one zone. Library / Tape drives
use a different zone.

the max jobs from 1 to 99 on the master server this was how it was
before I had problems a week ago some how got reset. I will try this and
see what happens. I will recheck all of my settings one more time.

Have you checked your storage units? Are both policies set to
write to the same storage unit, and thus to the same drive (assuming
this is how you are configured?) Are both backups of the same server.
I've had mixed results trying to run multiple policies on the same
server at the same time. If you fire off policy #2 (the one not running
now) and then Policy #1 does the same issue occur?

Hello all,

I have a weird one I have two separate policies that start at
the same time with 4 available drives. One starts writing and the other
stays queued.

They are both windows systems running through a windows media
server with a Sun Solaris master. I am running NetBackup 5.1 mp5
