[Veritas-bu] NDMP job backing up more data than exists??

2011-04-13 Thread Tschida, Tom (STP)
 Hello all,

We have a large NetApp volume (14TB) that we are trying to backup through NDMP.
The job is still running after 71 hours and it is reporting 25TB currently
written. This volume is being deduped with NetApps block-level dedupe, so
maybe I'm not understanding the true size of the volume.

A df -s shows the following:

Filesystemused saved %saved
/vol/vol0/2676 0 0%
/vol/ARX_Quorum/ 2620 0 0%
/vol/vol1/ 9714035096 4359604200 31%

I've verified we are excluding all .snapshot folders.

Any help or insight is greatly appreciated.

[Veritas-bu] Any gotchas with 10 GB Ethernet?

2010-02-01 Thread Tschida, Tom (STP)
Hello All,

We are in the process of implementing 2 new Solaris media servers with
10 GB Ethernet. Are there any gotchas on the OS side or the NetBackup
side I should be aware of? Any buffer settings we need to tweak or new
touch files, etc?

Thanks in advance.

[Veritas-bu] Drives disappearing on SUN servers with i2000 library

2009-12-30 Thread Tschida, Tom (STP)
We have configured a new environment consisting of one SUN master as the
control host, and two SUN media servers sharing 32 LTO-4 drives. Each
server is a T5240 running Solaris 10. The library is a new Quantum
i2000 with a single partition.

The FC ports on the library can be set to Loop, Loop Preferred, or
Point-to-Point. We have them set to Point-to-Point. One of the Quantum
techs suggested Loop Preferred may work better, although an EMC tech
suggested Point-to-Point. The switches are Brocade 5300 and are set to
auto negotiate.

After 4 days of testing, we notice that drives just disappear on the
media servers at random times. We have made no changes since the
initial setup, and can't understand why they just go away.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

[Veritas-bu] Catalog Archiving

2009-08-25 Thread Tschida, Tom (STP)
Is anyone using this feature within NetBackup? I recently found out
about it, but it's been around since 4.5 Our catalog is approaching 1
TB in size and this looks like a good solution, as long as there are no
gotchas.

Just curious how it's working for people.

Thanks in advance.

[Veritas-bu] Preferred hardware for Master Server?

2009-08-20 Thread Tschida, Tom (STP)
Hello all,

Does anyone out there have recommendations or possibly white papers for
preferred Master Server hardware? We are looking at either a SUN T5240
or a SUN M4000. Although I'd be interested in any info on AIX too.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

[Veritas-bu] Qualstar Libraries??

2009-05-18 Thread Tschida, Tom (STP)
Hello All,

We are in the middle of a Physical Tape Library selection process. We
have narrowed down our choices to the Quantum Scalar series and the STK
SL3000, but I came across some info on the Qualstar SLX library and it
looks very intriguing.

So finally to the question. Is anyone out there using the Qualstar SLX
and what are your thoughts? Happy? Disappointed? How's the speed,
reliability, etc?

Any info is greatly appreciated.

[Veritas-bu] Can I change a Media ID?

2007-07-09 Thread Tschida, Tom (STP)
All,

We just added a new robot to our environment and didn't get barcode
rules set up right away. We now have a handful of Media ID's that are
missing the preceding letter. For example a tape labeled C01234 is
showing up with Media ID 01234L (the L designates LTO media).

Other than duplicating the backups, is there a way for me to change the
Media ID's without losing the backup images?

[Veritas-bu] set_ndmp_attr question

2007-05-03 Thread Tschida, Tom \(STP\)
I see there's been a wave of NDMP questions lately, so I thought I'd
join in too.

I'm trying to set up NDMP 3-way backups with NetApp filers. I've
successfully configured the primary filer, but I keep receiving Status
99 errors for the 3rd party filer. The detailed status shows:

Error bptm (pid-2220317) NDMP attribute lookup failed - verify
attributes with set_ndmp_attr

I ran

set_ndmp_attr -auth $filer_name $user_name $encrypted_passwd

and

set_ndmp_attr -verify $filer_name

for all filers and received a successful login response.

Do I need to stop and start the daemons after running the above
commands? Any other ideas?

Thanks much!

You're right about the STK's. We have L20's, L40's, L700's and even an
old 9740, and they can al be opened without taking them off-line.

Really? I haven't used that particular model, but that reminds me of
the OLD Quantum 4x100 libraries (forgot the model number) from years
ago. I'm pretty sure that you can open the CAP on an ADIC (now
Quantum), STK (now Sun) and IBM library without taking the library
offline. (Anyone want to say different?)

Is this just a PX510 thing, or is this all Quantum (non-ADIC) libraries?
Am I right about the other libraries not having this issue?

I can't open the doors to the PX510 without taking the drive itself it
offline. There is no mail slot in the PX510. There are load ports, but
again, I have to open the door of the PX510 to access the load ports,
and the PX510 itself will not open the doors while the PX510 itself is
on-line. The on-line / off-line of the PX510 is different than the
on-line / off-line status of the drives in Netbackup.

Seriously, why not use NBU's ability to move tapes in and out of the
library without having to take it offline?

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Quantum PX510 with Solaris 10, Netbackup 6

All,
I've got an odd problem with my PX510 and my Solaris 10, Netbackup 6.0
MP2 master server. The PX510 is connected to a fibre san switch, and my
Solaris 10 Netbackup 6 master server is connected into the san switch as
well. When the PX510 is taken off-line (say to add new tapes, remove
old tapes, inventory the tape library at the PX510), then taken back
on-line, I can't see the PX510 from my Solaris 10 master server. If I
run sgscan from the Solaris 10 box, I can't see the the jukebox until
the Solaris 10 box is reset.

The odd thing is, is that the PX510 is used for Shared Storage. I've
got a Linux box (SLES 9) running Netbackup 6 MP2 connected to the fibre
san switch as well. The Linux box can see it by running
/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/scan before and after the PX510 goes offline then
online. I can't keep rebooting my Solaris 10 master server every time I
add or remove tapes from it. I've tried modunload and modload on the sg
and st modules in solaris. Has anyone had anything similar to this
occur to them? If so did you find a work around? Or if you've got any
general ideas, please share.

[Veritas-bu] 2 questions about NDMP

2007-01-09 Thread Tschida, Tom \(STP\)
All,

Hopefully these are two quick and easy NDMP questions for the group:

1) How do I enable multiple jobs per filer with NDMP?

2) In a Dell tech doc, it specifies setting the max fragment size per
NDMP storage unit to 0. Is that really the recommended setting?

Thanks much.

I would like to run multiple jobs (policies) in parallel. Currently,
only one job will run at a time, and additional jobs will queue.

I'm running NB 6.0 MP4, by the way.

Hello Tom,

The answer to question 1 depends on what you mean by multiple jobs per
filer.

First of all are you looking to do multiple jobs in parallel or just do
multiple volumes or qtrees.

In the ndmp policy you can list multiple volumes or qtrees in the policy
with optional new stream statements.

You can also define multiple policies with one or more volumes or qtrees
in each policy.

So you could have policy-netapp1-vol0 /* for vol0 */
Then policy-netapp2-vol1 /* for vol1 */
Orpolicy-netapp2-vol-xyz /* for flex vol xyz */

These names are just made up, but they should give you the idea.

It all depends on what you want.

I have not looked at question 2 for a while, so with a fuzzy memory I
will say yes. Remember the netapp is doing the backup and it does not
know from netapp's fraq's. netbackup does have the netapp put netbackup
labels on the tape.

[Veritas-bu] Trying to identify expired tapes

2006-08-31 Thread Tschida, Tom \(STP\)
Gurus,

I have a request from our legal department to identify all tapes written
within a one year period. Unfortunately, that period is just outside of
our retention.

What I did: From a Full backup of the Master server just after the
requested period, I restored the images directory,
netbackup/db/media/mediaDB, volmgr/database/volDB and poolDB and class
directory to a server in our lab.

I created the /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/NOexpire file, moved all restored
files in place, then stopped and restarted NetBackup on the test server.

I was able to run bpimagelist and identify all the tapes written to
during the time period. The problem is, when I run bpmedialist on the
individual tapes, it says they are not in the NB media database, even
though they can be seen in the GUI under media. They also show up with
vmquery.

The question is, do I still need to restore something, or am I just
totally missing something with NB functionality?

Any help is appreciated.
