[Veritas-bu] Media Servers Per Tape Drive Ratio

2011-01-25 Thread Will Tucker
All,

How do you determine how many media servers per tape drive in your
environments? I have 10 LTO3 tape drives and have been using 2 media servers
per tape drive. Thank you.

Just a quick question, but I used some default NetBackup settings to tune

If I move to a different library with LTO4 (rather than LTO3), do I need to
reconfigure the settings?

Subject: Re: [Veritas-bu] How Much Data Can Be Backed Up

Will,

Questions like this vary greatly based on many factors. In short, you're
really the only one who can determine that. Here are some basic guidelines I
use.

1. Most people probably use media servers to backup themselves. This keeps
large amounts of data off the network. You need to figure out the maximum data
transfer rate for your media server (system I/O), the maximum transfer rate of
your source disks, and the maximum transfer rate of your tape drives. In this
case, the slowest one wins and is the best case number you can use. You then
figure out how much data you will backup for a full backup (worst case
transfers), divide that by your best case transfer rate, and that will tell you
how long it will take to do that backup.

2. For client backups to media or master servers over the network, you need to
factor in the same things as above, but now the network traffic becomes another
factor. If you flood the LAN and have to dial things back to keep other users
happy, it will affect how much you can effectively backup.

3. Throttling the backups, locally or across the network, may need to be
considered. If you find running an all-out full backup on a client drives it
into the ground where users complain, you'll need to factor in slower times as
you restrict throughput or look into things like a dedicated backup network and
interface.

4. What is an acceptable backup window for your clients. If you have 12 hours
to backup 10 TB you need to make sure each of the pieces are capable of
performing at a high enough level. If it currently takes you 6 hours, you have
room for more data. If you are already at 12 hours then you need to find out
which piece isn't keeping up and decide if you can change it.

As you can see, the number of tape drives or media servers may not be a factor.
If you can write 80MB/s to a tape drive but your source disks are only putting
out 30MB/s adding more tape drives or media servers will not help you at all.
Do some testing of the individual piece involved in your backups and see where
your weakest link is. You should be able to figure out where you are limited
from there.

I had the same issues. When you created the policy, did you use the
policy creation wizard. If so I believe that is why the error 49
occurred.

Try upgrading to 6.5.3 via liveupdate and creating a new policy without
the wizard this time and setup the policy manually.

This worked for me!!

I did. On my 1 2008 server the backup ran for 4 days. On the 5th day
bpbrm seemed to never hand off to bpcd and the parent job just hung

this is a brand new install. the old environment is so old that it was
too expensive to upgrade it or buy something to hold both types of
tapes. the ADIC is using DLT 8000 drives and we have the 40/80 GB tapes.
the SDLT drives that can read them can only be bought from junk dealers.

since this is my first time setting up netbackup, it's a learning curve.
and there is so much documentation it's too much to take in at once.
when it discovered the robot, drives and tapes it automatically labeled
them as dlt.

next week i'll probably change it to hcart. for now we'll probably use
the old robot and server for old restores. but it has been flaky in the
past and in case it dies for good we'll need to buy an old SDLT
autoloader.

Hi all. I'm trying to find a solution to a monitoring problem we
have. I would like to create a mechanism to alert when a backup fails
but to only send one alert if multiple streams from a backup fail.
For instance if c: and d: both fail for a particular box, I only want
1 alert. Also if a job fails twice but is successful on the third
attempt I don't want an alert at all. I only want to be alerted once
when netbackup gives up on retrying a backup and fails the job.
I've looked at backup_exit_notify but haven't been able to find a good
way to implement this here. Any ideas?

Hi All,

Did any one tried Bocada for monitoring the Backups on Veritas. Bocada software
claims that it can monitor the backups running/ran on Veritas Netbackup as well
as TSM. We have both the environment running in the infrastructure , but not
able to monitor the backups on a single console, is there any other software
which can help us in monitoring .

[Veritas-bu] Status Code 58

2008-11-26 Thread Will Tucker
I have inherited a NBU environment (Windows 2003 Server SP2) with one
master server, 3 media servers which connect to an SL8500 (development
backups), and 3 media servers which connect to a StorageTek L180
(production backups). I'm receiving multiple status code 58 (can't
connect to client) on my development jobs even though I'm running the
bpclntcmd -hn command to obtain the correct hostname. Any ideas?
