Yes, noticed it.

You are only able to add media servers to your NBU domain with an enterprise
server license and in this case you would have the option to configure the new
system as an additional media server after the license key was checked.

Ah, okay, that figures. And I suppose an Enterprise license is
more expensive than a Server license, isn't it?

Thanks for the bad news :),

Hm.

I now installed NetBackup 6.0 MP4 on a Solaris 9 system by running the
install script from the NetBackup6.0MP4_Solaris_Server.tar file. It did
show me the prompt mentioned above. Any ideas, about why that might be
so?

And, more importantly, how do I tell the just installed NetBackup,
that this machine is not the master server, but that xyz instead is
the master server?

Simple, edit your bp.conf file and make sure the top entry shows up
as SERVER = your_master_server

Re: [Veritas-bu] How do I add a Media Server to an existing NetBackup environment?

2007-11-12 Thread Alexander Skwar
Hello.

It contains now, after the installation:

SERVER = augds01
CLIENT_NAME = augds01
EMMSERVER = augds01
VXDBMS_NB_DATA = /usr/openv/db/data

The master server is named winds06. Thus I'd need to change SERVER to winds06.

What about EMMSERVER, though? Change it also to winds06? Remove that
line? Or leave it at augds01 (== name of media server)?

Thanks,
Alexander

Hi.

Hm, that's step 4 on the wiki page. It says:

4. Add the server's name to the masters's bp.conf file

Hmm... Any other ideas about why that prompt hasn't
been shown?

Thanks,
Alexander

You can find the automatically created install_trace file at

From your trace:

Enter license key:
DRXI-:
NetBackup Server Base product with the following features enabled:

I don't know if this is still the case with NBU 6, but there was/is a
difference between Server and Enterprise Server.

My trace looks like:

Enter license key:

NetBackup Enterprise Server Base product with the following features
enabled:

Notice the difference.

You are only able to add media servers to your NBU domain with an enterprise

[Veritas-bu] How do I add a Media Server to an existing NetBackup environment?

2007-11-09 Thread Alexander Skwar
Hello.

I've got a machine at a remote location, which I'd like to manage
from here. It's a Solaris 9 system with an attached Robot and Tape
Drive. here, I already have a Master Server (NBU 6.0 MP4 on Solaris
10, at the moment). To make the management easier, I'd like to be
able to manage the remote system from the current environment.

What are the steps that I need to do? On my web searches, I found
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/279049.htm, which states
to run a command along the lines of

nbemmcmd -addhost -machinename media1 -machinetype media\
 -masterserver nbumaster -operatingsystem windows \
 -netbackupversion 6

in addition to the other steps needed to add a Media Server to an
existing NetBackup 6.0 environment.

What are those other steps? According to
http://www.backupcentral.com/components/com_mambowiki/index.php/How_do_I_add_a_Media_Server_to_an_existing_NetBackup_environment%3F,
they are:

1. Install the server software on the media server
2. When prompted, do not install any clients other than the one for
   the media server
3. When prompted is xyz the master server? answer NO.
4. Add the server's name to the masters's bp.conf file
5. nbemmcmd
6. You should now be able to configure devices via the Configure
storage devices wizard in the NBU GUI.

Is that it?

And does it even make sense, what I'm planning to do? I know that there's
the NetBackup Remote Administration Console, but it is only available
for Windows, isn't it? And as I'm on Linux (Client) or Solaris, I cannot
use this (or could I, with the help of Wine?).

Thanks a lot,

Alexander Skwar
